Race ProfileName: The Basilisk
Physical Description: They have the form of any human. Though they have the natural ability to change into a snake. Their snake form is much much larger than a normal snake. Every Basilisk can only change into one variety of snake…they cannot change into any snake they want…only the snake they were bestowed at birth… i.e cobra, rattlesnake, etc.
They also have a demi-form…in which they become half human, half snake. Normally they take on the upper half of a human, and the lower have of that of a snake. Though there have been accounts of a Basilisk taking on more features of a snake in their demi-form..such as their entire skin takes on the quality of that of a snake’s skin…and yet they remain in human form…and other variations of snake and human form have been recorded. It takes great control to do such things with one’s form.
In their human form they are not as strong as when they take on their snake form or even their demi-form. When taking on their form they become even more agile, and quick. They become even stronger and resilient.
Even in their human form they move with such a fluid grace…much like that of a snake…that it can be startling to anyone who is not accustomed to the way they move. They are naturally seductive and captivating. Quick and cunning.
Natural Abilities: They can naturally take on the form of a snake. Though this snake is the size between a human and a horse. Many dabble in dark magic…or magic in general. Though they are not innately evil per say…but more precocious and playfully mischievous. Their bite is deadly as it is venomous…it is even more potent in their snake form.
Strengths: Their quick and agile movements give them great advantage over slower races. They are also physically stronger than many humanoid races…especially in their snake form. Many have a natural knack for controlling magic…though most of the time it is the darker magics that they fancy. Their unbelievable beauty and alluring features often help them in their advances.
Weaknesses: Many fall prey to their own narcistic natures. Others find themselves caught up in the evil arts and that is their own demise. They are a brash and emotional bunch. Often letting their feelings take over their decisions rather than stopping to think about what they are doing. They live in the moment and never take consequences of their actions to heart. Prone to emotional outbursts and rash actions.
Habitat: They make their home on the piece of land between Manwe, Arionette, Foxfire, and Gryne. Though many find themselves amongst humans, arions, and elves. They are like gypsies…traveling and entertaining with dance.
Lifespan: They have the average lifespan of that of a human. Max 100 years and that is whilst on their deathbed.
Languages: They speak the native tongue of Aersralm and also speak in Serpentine tongue…which consists of hisses and high pitched sounds. It is a very complex language for anyone outside their race to learn…but it is possible. And even then those who are not of the Basilisk may get lost in the translation.
Religion: Greatest of all Basilisk gods was Degei, the Snake god. In the beginning he lived alone, without friends or companions, and the only living creature he knew was Turukawa the hawk. Although the hawk could not speak he was the constant companion of the god.
One day Degei could not find his friend and looked everywhere for him. Days went by and at last one morning he spied the hawk sitting in some long grass. Gladly, he welcomed the bird but, to his consternation, she ignored Degei and commenced building a nest.
Disappointed, he retired to his house and the next day went back to the nest and found two eggs. He then realized the hawk had found a mate and that he had lost her affection. So scooping up the eggs he took them into his own house and kept them warm with his own body. After several weeks of nurturing the eggs and wondering what would happen two shells broke and there were two tiny human bodies.
Degei built them a shelter in a vesi tree and fed them on scraps of food. They grew quickly, but there was nobody to teach them except Degei. He did not understand children but when they were hungry he fed them and to save himself work he planted banana trees and root crops close to them. He also talked to them and told them about the secrets of nature. Eventually the children were fully grown and all this time had been unaware of each other's presence as Degei had placed them on opposite sides of the tree.
One day the man left his shelter and as soon as he saw the maiden held out his arms to her and told her Degei had made them for each other and that their children would populate the earth. So Degei showed them how to cook the root vegetables in an earth oven.
Some time later they were blessed with a little baby and Degei also was very happy as he knew that because of loneliness men and women had come into the world and would worship him as their god…and he granted them the form of snake to change into whenever they wished to do so.

It is customary to engage physically with one another…with hugs, kisses, and touching of the skin. They are not shy of physical affection…in fact, it is almost unheard of where a Basilisk refused an embrace, or a kiss. Even if they are angry at their loved one, they will allow the customary engaging of physical affection. Public displays of affection are common place among the Basilisk.
Because of their love of the body they teach their children the art of dance and it is a big part of their society. At gatherings it is customary to commence in the great dance and engage with one another. They often travel as gypsies do and dance and entertain for profit.
They sleep in groups…and a Basilisk needs constant affection…especially the Basilisk children. If Basilisk children are not loved constantly…they will often die. A Basilisk thrives on attention and love.
Though it is also not uncommon to find abuse among the Basilisk. Their emotional outbursts often cause them to hurt those they love. So slapping and hitting often occurs among couplings of Basilisk. Though this abuse is not seen as cruel…but rather just part of their society dynamic. They are fueled by their emotions. Though know…a Basilisk never harms their own children…but it is common to find the children hitting their parents…and the parents only restrain the children from doing it further. Most abuse happens among peers.
The Basilisk society is made up of artists, musicians, dancers, and craftsmen. Their love for beauty bleeds into their occupations.
