Thump thump, thump thump. Kaoto's heart thudded in his chest, his paws pounding against the pavement beneath him in a perfect rhythm, so perfect they seemed almost to be one beat, throbbing through his body and thumping in his ears. The constant sound gave him a sense of calm, letting him relax as he jogged along the highway. Somewhat of a mama's boy, Kaoto wasn't a traveler by nature; but then again, he hadn't really been given a choice, had he?
It was an assault, and he'd killed in self-defense, the young wolf had testified back with his old pack. And that had been the truth. Sure, he'd hated Shino his entire life, but that had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he'd killed him. Shino was tormenting him, as was often the case, but this time, it went a little too far. But the elders had instantly been swayed by the gash across Shino's belly and the wails of his mother, and gave him, Kaoto, two choices; to return to the nursery, and be treated forever as a pup, or exile.
He knew he shouldn't have. But after years of cowering beneath Shino's blows, he felt that retaliation was his only option. And in that moment, that moment when he could feel Shino's warm blood splattering across his fur, he felt no regrets.
Well, of course he was sorry now. Not that he'd ever been the social type, but this sort of constant silence was really getting to his mind. He paused, finding that the throbbing in his head wouldn't subside once his heart rate returned to normal. Typical; after almost a month of hearing nothing, he had a headache. He shook his head, oddly lime-colored eyes slitted as a snarl briefly crossed his face. The moon had begun to rise on the abandoned highway, and he loped over to a shaded, grassy spot on the side, curling his chocolate-colored tail around himself despite the heat. Perhaps a bit of sleep could rid him of this headache. |
