I've been toying with this thought for a while, and if you remember my Rome Total War thread, you recognize that I'm a fan of Roman times. So I've decided to do a play-throught of an Imperial Campaign again. However, this time it's a completely different tale...
Gone are the "Mummy Returns" Egyptians. Gone are the fantasy units (like Roman ninjas, called in the original RTW arcani). In comes Europa Barbarorum, a mod of RTW with complete historical accuracy as intent (and now the map goes to Ethiopia and India to!). It is also, from what I've played, much more complex and battles last longer. The factions, listing with the existing first (and then the new ones) (the in-game faction name in brackets): Rome (Romani): Not much has changed, just that they are now one faction instead of four. Carthage (Qart-ḥadašt): Not much here either, just that they depend on mercenaries more I think. Egypt (Ptolemaic dynasty): Major shake-up. Egypts troops are now Greekified, instead of being in golden armor (due to historical accuracy). Greeks (Koinon Hellion): The KH replaces the Greek cities I played with: The KH own just Athens, Sparta and Rhodes (compare with what I started with in the original thread). Britons (Casse): Casse, the only playable British tribe, starts only with what is today London, as opposed to the entire Britain in the original. Spanish (Lusotanna): As with the Britons, the Spanish starts with just one city and must conquer the rest. Macedon (Makedon): Not much have changed regarding them I think. Germans (Sweboz): They're in the same situation as the British and Spanish. Bulgarians (Getai): As with other barbarians... Ukrainians (Sauromatae): See above (I like the fact that they have a lizard as their faction symbol thought Turks (Pontos): Another one-city state, however this has an eastern feel. Armenians (Hayasdan): Pretty much like the Turks in their style of combat, but the Ukrainians like to invade them. Seleucid Empire (Arche Seleukeia): Big empire, althought the borders are pretty fragile... Iranians (Pahlava) Not much has changed compared with the original. Arverni and Aedui: Gaul has been split in two! Epirus: A third greek power, with possesions in both Italy and the Balkans. Baktria: This factions combines Greek with Iranian and Indian units. Saba: A pre-Islam arabic kingdom with mostly light troops. Saka-Rauka : A central Asian steppe people, with potential of storming Europe like the Huns... So, again you decide which faction I play as. I will do this in a story-telling way (thus the placement here), with fewer pictures. Prolouge: The year is 272 BC. No superpower exists in the lands surrounding the Mediterrean. And it has been so for the last 60 years. However, the stage is set. The 5 closest to the sacred status - Rome, Macedon, The Seleucid Empire, Egypt and Carthage have potential, but also problems. Rome is in the midst of a burning war against Pyrrhus and his Epirotes, with elephants. Macedon's ambitions face stiff resistance from a Greek alliance. The Seleucid's eastern border is fragile and multiple factions want to get the ill-defended cities. Egypt is struggling against the Seleucids for control over Syria. And Carthage must be wary of Spanish and later Roman wants... There are also others, watching and plotting. Many "uncivilised" Barbarians lurk out there, and a horde from the North is a possibility. The kingdoms on the Seleucids eastern borders have been loyal to the Seleucid king, but maybe not for long. Saba, an Arabian kingdom, see their neigbouring cities and even the Nile as something worth getting. And far away... the Saka Rauka, fearful of their neighbours, looks to the West and think "This might be worth taking..." |
