This project has taken forever. Fortunately the person who commisioned has the patience of a saint and has been well compensated with other figures for the absurdly long delay. The idea was to create a diorama depicting a battle between Leman Russ and Magnus the Red. If those names mean nothing to you, good. Consider yourself lucky.

Originally Russ was going to built out of the Archaon foot model, but it was too static, so I sculpted my own Primarch sized space marine:

That would have been fine, except that I didn't get the project completed on time. Games Workshop then decided to contract the Golden Demon categories, eliminating the Duel. The next year they eliminated the Battle Scene category. I now needed to change the pose to something that would stand on it's own. I also wanted to go with something that portrayed Space Wolves ferocity a little better. So I revamped:

The base was a rush job and the cloak is a mess. I've gotten a bit into the painting, but it's still a mess and I'm going back and cleaning up some parts of the sculpt at the same time.

Magnus was originally to be a conversion of a couple models from the inquisitor range. That's the direction I started in:

That just didn't work. The arms were OK, but the rest of the body I wasn't happy with. The grey material in there is a sculpey/fimo mix by the way. So that original was scrapped and I'm currently plugging away at another full sculpt for Magnus. I'll get some pictures up when I get my good camera back.

Don't have any pics of v.2. He was basically the same pose as v.1 but scratchbuilt to get around the not-quite-working-as-expected Inquisitor parts. I scrapped v.2 to go with something more aggressive. So now we'll have Russ and Magnus both moving towards each other.

Not a ton of work on Magnus. Some anatomy refinement and repositioned the right arm. That position still might change.

Russ is a mess. Still needs some resculpting.

The main benefit of polymer clay: you can mess around with it until you eventually get it right. The abs have been giving me trouble. The structure of the abdominal muscles isn't complicated, it's just been getting them to look right that's been a headache.
