Hi Cohort! Welcome to the boards! What material are you using for your growlers?
You know I had some tool issues recently too. I did some trophies that were 6" and 13" tall. My trusty miniature sculpting tools were not terribly handy for the most part. I think it would be the equivalent of trying to paint those same pieces with a size 0 brush.

Hello, Prophet, its nice to be here. I must say that your Berserker is truly inspiring. Do you have a finished shot of the bust?

I used white sculpey, before I learned its more cost effective to buy the "pink" stuff in the boxes.

The main problem with tools is that I only have one real sculpting tool. The Growlers were mostly just done by hand! I read somewhere that dentist tools can make good sculpting tools though, and as luck would have it, that's where I'm off to tomorrow.

Are there any tools you might reccomend for a new comer?

Sad to say the berzerker has sat in the same state for about the last year.

The only problem with the pink Super Sculpey is that it has some transparency to it. There's a grey version out now, but I haven't tried it out yet.

Dental picks and wax carvers are a good place to start. If you plan on doing more larger figs like the growlers, you can pick up a set of wax carvers on eBay for $10-$15. A lot of the tools will be too big to be of much use for smaller miniatures, but may come in handy when you get up to the bigger stuff.

Prophet,

Thanks. Wax carvers, I'll look for them. I've found that the pink sculpey is nice and soft compared to the coloured material. I like it, but as you said, it is kind of transparent.

Man, I was really hoping I could purchase a copy of that berserker, its really awesome. I hope I can sculpt like that one day.

PS- the Berserker is what Sabretooth should look like. biggrin.gif

I plan on finishing it sooner or later. The guys from Armorcast are only about an hour from me, and we've worked together before on a couple things, so I'll probably get it cast up in at least a limited quantity. I'll definitely let everyone know when it ends up available.

That's great news, I'd love to have a copy. Any ideas what the price tag might be?

Hey all,

I'm new here, so I figured I would post some of my pics. Nice to see that this site is still active, and I am surprised it isn't busier considering the quality of the information available on the Prophet website!

Hey Matt, ever considered pulling a Hasslfree or Spyglass sorta deal and starting your own miniature company? I like the sculpting class idea as well of course, but just curious!

My first ever miniature, green and painted:

I basically ignored the idea of smoothing for this one. Fixed the roughness with paint, see below:

Here is the first human body part I sculpted (from the bum down):

It was after I finished the above piece that I figured I could attempt a full fig... Here is the first full, standing fig I did:

I later replaced the large head:

Second fig (no neck!)

Third fig:

And fourth and final 28mm fig:

I recently started sculpting a few 15mm figs... A lot harder to get perfect detail, and the average quality of historical 15mm figs is pretty low, so I have been told that this one could be introduced as a commercial fig with no apologies!

Here is the painted version:

Thanks for looking!

Not bad Neldorath! The improvement in your smoothness is very evident in just the first few sculpts.

First Post! First "Sculpt".

I quoted sculpt, because it's only a little thing, a cloak on an existing miniature, but it's a start.

Sorry about the colour, my phone doesn't like low light and blue tinges things....

Critique?
