Title: SOPA

Confederacy - December 16, 2011 04:02 AM (GMT)
Looks like it's getting passed tomorrow or soon.

America, land of the free, eh?

Lintire - December 16, 2011 05:00 AM (GMT)
Been following this for a while. Figured that it would be incredibly hilarious if America kills the internet, because from what I've been seeing, they don't actually have anything to counteract the deepweb petabyte-large databases, kiddy porn and terrorist shite anyway.

Which really means that only legitimate and entry-level piracy sites are going to go down in this.

Fucking hilarious. Politics, eh?

blood asp - December 16, 2011 05:24 AM (GMT)
American politics... I can't even say anything. I need a facepalm smiley.

So anyone want to join me in my other thread and move somewhere else?

Trollocide - December 16, 2011 11:26 AM (GMT)
Don't forget the NDAA as well. Obama's already agreed to sign that too, which will grant the US government the right to detain US citizens indefinitely without trial. Ironically despite all of Fox News' screaming about socialism, Obama couldn't possibly have turned out to be a more fascist President. And I hate using the word "fascist" because it almost seems too melodramatic with the way Fox abuses the word "socialist", but I don't know what else to call it. I mean it doesn't get any more radical than this. He is about to single-handedly trump Bush as worst President of all-time two times over with the passing of these bills. I have to admit even for as jaded as I've gotten toward this President, I didn't expect him to go this far off the deep end.

And just think, had we voted for McCain it would have been just as much of a shit-fest, because guess who is one of the two main authors of this atrocity? Why none other than Senator McCain!! YAAAAY (please kill me now).

MM10X - December 16, 2011 06:14 PM (GMT)
Aliens control the government. Durrr.

Yeah, I remember awhile back you posted about some worldwide bill very similar to SOPA, and I said it would never pass in a place like America. I am eating my own words as we speak. They taste like shit.

I completely agree, and the worst part is that the Republican candidates this time around are fucking infinitely worse than they've ever been in history, complete incompetence, ignorance, disregard for human and American rights, etc.

I've come up with a theory (well, I haven't invented it, so to speak) that Obama actually holds a lot of Republican values and that this batch of Republicans are sabotaging their own political campaigns so they can just walk away with the campaign money (something more common in politics than one might think).

Obama is the worst example of a Democrat I have ever had the displeasure of voting for just because he isn't Newt Gingrich.

Lintire - December 17, 2011 01:00 AM (GMT)
The good news is that this is really only isolated to America - so that any non-American based websites will be absolutely fine and anyone not in that hellhole country of yours can go around, skipping, scott-free. Apart from the paypal, I guess.

There's an out, and its Canada.

Lintire - December 17, 2011 01:23 AM (GMT)
SOPA has been delayed until 21st December, 2011

I hate linking to reddit, but they have their cocks all over it so its the most convenient place to link it to.

Limbob - December 17, 2011 06:18 AM (GMT)
I hadn't heard of this one before, political bullshit, what's new. Gave up on politics long ago,

Lintire - December 18, 2011 01:27 PM (GMT)
Done a hell of a lot of reading on the subject, and can basically summarize it as this:

The bill's main function is really to combat piracy (duh) and of that I approve. Seriously, that shit has to stop, along with DRM, so we can all enjoy painlessly our games and whatnot. At least, the average joe has to stop. Anyone with an ounce of internet savvy knows where to go when they really want their shit - but that's the minority of people on the internet.

Average joe and his facebook statuses and go fuck themselves.

The "Protect-IP" tagged along with the main function of the bill is the main shit. That's really the stuff being pushed through at any expense by a couple of blatantly paid-off fuckwits and being combated by a couple of well-meaning, slightly more intelligent fuckwits.

None of them really have any idea what they're talking about.

If this bill does get passed, and it increasingly looks like it won't, it'll be heavily amended by the time its worthless corpse drags itself into Senate. Keep legitimate sites in the air and out of a collective industry's death-throttle.

So it's not the end of the world. A little more inconvenience for your internet savvy pirates.

Yes and the fact that the corporations have pretty much free reign of just about what kind of information or user content is allowed to be up. And again, this is in no way going to stop piracy even the slightest. Maybe slow it down at the start, but certainly not stop it. Again, this shouldn't even be a government issue, but you know, lobbyists paying the government off, it has to be.

I'd like to believe that this bill will get killed off, but considering the fact that they passed the NDAA and that Obama is willing to sign off on it really puts considerable doubt in my mind that it won't get passed.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some countries started doing the same thing if this bill gets passed.

We should all just chip in with the money we got, buy a house, and live in it. And call that the Veteran's Lounge.

Well where the fuck else is Dr. Pepper sold then?

I want a can of that shit so bad.

I got so close to getting one the other day.

In other news I managed to grab some Dr. Pepper.

And then I drank it.

With my mouth.

And tasted it.

The sweet, sweet taste of something akin to blueberry bubblegum liquidized and gifted from the heavens unto mortals.

I don't recall Dr. Pepper tasting like blueberry bubblegum...

I want Australian Dr. Pepper now.

Lintire - December 29, 2011 10:31 AM (GMT)
It's imported from the UK. If it were made here, I'd have probably been drinking this delicious stuff my entire life.

Lintire - January 4, 2012 11:05 AM (GMT)
UPDATE: I just got another can.

That is all.

I could be here for ages just drinking in the scents via my olfactory senses.

Trollocide - January 4, 2012 12:17 PM (GMT)
REAL UPDATE: NDAA passed, with a laughable signing statement from the President to reassure us that at least *his* administration won't rape us in the ass with this bill.

Rest in Peace internet. I wonder how long it'll be before the corporations decide Invision Free is curtailing their profits and feel the need for it to be shut down.

Never before could I actually legitimately say this and feel completely honest with myself, but, here we go.

Fuck this country.

Whoops lul, I got my bills mixed around for a second (how the fuck did I not notice that?). By "SOPA passed" I meant NDAA passed. :3 Either way still terrible news. SOPA is next in line and still on the table. Anyway, edited my old post for clarification.

You know, you could have just clicked the video I also linked in my post and you would have noticed my error right away. Hell, it even says it in the video title if you just bothered to read for one more half second.

Anyway, it's not any less damning news. It's now legal to indefinitely detain US citizens without trial anywhere in or outside the country.

Confederacy - January 5, 2012 04:03 AM (GMT)
I kinda figured that, but I was to tired when I first saw that to actually post something about it. And I was hungry.

Also, I'm going to be in Minnesota sometime in August, Drizen. Just thought you'd like to know.

SOPA is dead now.

Good riddance. Oh wait PIPA lol.

Trollocide - January 20, 2012 12:26 AM (GMT)
FYI, while SOPA has been "indefinitely shelved" in the House, the Senate version of the bill, PIPA, is still in business, so the fight is not over yet.

Maddox has the right idea about what the problem is, but still misses the mark on the solution to the problem. Boycotting companies and voting out politicians are still only temporary solutions, because as he himself pointed out: the system is fundamentally corrupt. Politicians get bought by lobbyists and do whatever they're told to do from the highest bidder. You think just kicking the bums out is going to fix this? Hell no; we just put in place another set of bums who will either inevitably be bought out or are already bought and that's how they got the money to finance their election campaign in the first place. We need to push for campaign finance reform and an amendment that effectively creates a separation of business and state; banning lobbying and ensuring that corporations are not recognized as people and do not get the same rights as people. Take the money out of politics and then politicians have to win their campaigns strictly on the votes, not their donors.

Luna - January 20, 2012 12:31 AM (GMT)
I'm not exactly sure if this has been mentioned, but Megaupload has been taken down. I'm not exactly sure if that has anything to do with the SOPA or anything like that, but it might be worth a mention.
