Title: Metal Gear Rising canceled, Revengeance a reboot

Unsurprisingly, Hideo Kojima has been bombarded by questions on Twitter, following the reveal of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Amidst the inquisition, Kojima has revealed that the Metal Gear Solid: Rising we originally knew had been quietly canceled, and that Revengeance is set after MGS4, not before it as once believed.
"The old Rising that was being prototyped at Kojima Productions looked visually like Metal Gear, but it was 30 frames per second and required complicated controls," he revealed. However, when the studio was unable to focus the game's direction, it was unceremoniously canceled. That's when Platinum Games stepped in, expressing interest in the project and asking to get involved.
"I made one request of Platinum: a cool Raiden who moves nice and smooth at 60 frames per second," he said.
As for the game's place in the Metal Gear Solid series, it doesn't have one, despite being set in the same universe: "We've only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can't say more than this."
Revengeance certainly looks interesting, but it seems to have a dramatically different attitude to Metal Gear Solid. While that could work, I have a hard time seeing how it'll fit into the more serious, weird-but-almost-believable Metal Gear world. Guess we'll have to see more. |
So they decided to pretty much make it into a Bayonetta/Devil May Cry game now to compensate for that? Well, it looked like shit before and still looks like shit. Not to mention that Platinum Games is an awful developer as well.

Ah, I was just going to post about this. Sooo rant time.
OK gotta be honest: People who are whining about this game just because it's not a traditional MGS game need to shut the fuck up. I'm sorry, but they really do. We've gotten at least 5 regular MGS titles over the years already (MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, and Peace Walker). How many more times do you need to play the same god damn game before you've had enough? I've personally started to grow tired of it; I still haven't even finished MGS4 yet despite that I bought it almost a year ago, and I skipped MGS3.
That all being said, this game now looks like a disaster after being handed over to Platinum Games. This was Kojima's dumbest mistake. After being "rebuilt", the graphics now look worse, the animations are more clunky, the cut at will mechanic seems mostly removed in favor of generic hack 'n slash garbage, and it now comes complete with cheesy action dialogue that is inconsistent with Raiden's character. Anyone who played MGS4 would know that Raiden doesn't just run around hacking people up with a stupid smile on his face and making bad Dante-style quips. He was fighting to stop the endless wars, not for the enjoyment of chopping people up.
And Revenge with a Vengeance? REVENGEANCE? Seriously? Did someone just ask their 3-year-old to come up with that name? Horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. This is not the same game we were promised back in E3 2010. This is pulling a Bungie when they ruined Halo 2; probably even worse than that. I'm not really sure what problems you had with the original trailer Confederacy, but I personally thought the game looked pretty badass and the ability to cut through just about anything with one clean swipe looked really slick, but now all of that is gone and this game looks like mediocre fluff instead of what could have been something really awesome.

Never played any mgs, Was told i should so i might get the hd remake thing that was announced.
I dont keep up-to-date with any news so why are platinum games bad? of their games I've only played bayonetta, I agree that the story was werid enough without them managing to fuck the story-telling, it was like you went to see a movie but got shadow puppets instead, but gameplay was fun.

They're a great developer - good at taking risks and having them pay out. They've only been around 3 years and have shaken the industry - MadWorld, Vanquish, and Bayonetta are games everyone has at least heard, with the former being one of my favourite games of all time.
However, they were sincerely and utterly the
wrong people to hand this game to, and they're going to drive it into the ground.

Lint is right. It's not that I doubt Platinum Games' ability to make a good game; they've shown that they can make some good action titles before with examples like Bayonetta and Vanquish.
The problem is that Platinum has a very different vision of this game compared to what Kojima originally conceived. Hideo was designing a game that was going to give you the freedom to cut through just about anything while learning about Raiden's backstory of becoming a cyborg like Gray Fox. Platinum's vision is let's just make this into Metal Gear May Cry. Of course I'm sure the gameplay probably won't even be that bad, but compared to what it could have been, this is a significant step down.
Just compare the two trailers.

It's not even the same game.

You're right, Rising looked more interesting and probs would have been better.
Revengence (stupid name) I might enjoy because I tand to like that stuff and never played the orginal games. I dont care to much but I agree with you guys

It wont be a bad game, and considering my love of over-the-top action games I'll probably like it. But it really doesn't belong anywhere remotely near the super srs Metal Gear Solid universe.

The only problem with this is that it doesn't include MGS1, which is arguably the best one, especially if you can get your hands on the GameCube remake of it.

well you cant have everything in life
Lintire - December 14, 2011 10:44 PM (GMT)
It's not about having everything in life, the omitting of Psycho Mantis is a sin.

Am I the only one taking this game as a satire and laughing my ass off all the way to making a pre order? It's practically a joke on every 90s action movie ever and a joke on a fun game series with crappy writing that takes it self WAY to seriously. Im loving the way this is turning out! It's like the "Scary Movie" of the MGS series!

I did too, but only Raiden is a ridiculous faggot. Everything Solid Snake does to the Metal Gear series Raiden ruins.
Trollocide - December 15, 2011 05:28 AM (GMT)
I thought Raiden was a terrible character in MGS2, but had they done this game right I would have forgiven Kojima for it.

It was Raiden, he ruined it from the start.

I love how everyone hates Raiden. It's one of the few things the gaming community unanimously agrees on.

I like Raiden.
Trollocide - December 16, 2011 11:15 AM (GMT)
Like I said, I hated Raiden in MGS2. However, I thought he was badass in MGS4, which is why I was more than happy to see him get his own installment again... until that pile of shit VGA trailer.
Yip - December 16, 2011 10:47 PM (GMT)
I just fucking hate Raiden.
