Title: What are you reading?
Martin - May 26, 2009 02:03 AM (GMT)
Perhaps not the right section, but hey-ho. Thought this might be a decent place for the boosters to discuss their present reading material. At the minute I'm reading this:

Yet another mediocre Asda 'real life military' yarn, although I do have a slight fetish for military hardware so I always come back for more. Much along the lines of 'Vulcan 607' if you've read that. It does demonstrate what an unstoppable killing machine the Apache is, and how little chance the Taliban fighters have/had against it in Afganistan. It also explores the feelings of doubt/remorse/guilt the pilots sometimes had/have, when especially being able to see their targets so clearly as the die through the apache's advanced magnification targeting technology, and then again on a plasma screen at the debrief back at base as they review the 'gun tapes'. Interesting in places, but I've read better. 5/10

At the moment I have a stack of books I wanna get through whilst I'm Uni reading free. I'm currently on Communion by Whitley Strieber that Hadyn lent to me. After that its Angels & Demons by Dan Brown, then The Host by Stephanie Meyer, then a Langston Hughes poetry book, then My Boring Ass Life by Kevin Smith. I'll give my opinions when I've finished them all :)
KickAss MkII - June 8, 2009 01:45 PM (GMT)
Finished Communion last night, review on H's thread. Gonna start Kevin Smith's autobiography tonight, need something light and funny after being scared by aliens for a couple of weeks

I've just started this:
"Notes from the frontline of a hip hop planet"

Definitely one for Hadyn and Stu... in fact, if it wasnt my sister's I'd send it down to Wolvo when I'd finished.

KickAss MkII - August 18, 2009 09:30 AM (GMT)
I finished Kevin Smith's auto-biog when on holiday and it was pretty cool I have to say once I got past exactly how candid it was (I really don't need to know what time the dude goes for a dump.......). Gave me a good few chuckles and it was nice to learn what happened to Jay after he went drug-mad.
I also read 'The Liar' by Stephen Fry and it made me laugh a lot, it was a little pretentious but that was part of the humour so it was enjoyable.
I've just started 'The Time Travellers Wife' as I'd quite like to see the flick but hate not having read the book beforehand so
After that it'll be prep reading for Uni so lots of SPSS and Critical Social Psychology and other stuff :)

As recommended by Steve Berry (yes, ex TopGear Steve Berry) who gets me to work every morning on Manchester Rock Radio. Supposed to be an excellent 'warts and all' account of the GnR years. Very interesting so far, and only £4.xx is Asda!

Slash book is epic. Highly recommended. Just been reading about
this interview on the Headbanger's Ball when they first released Appetite for Destruction. They'd just touched down in the states after a massive European tour supporting The Cult, and were about to go out on the next supporting Motley Crue. Nice slice of 80s rock n roll history. I love the internet.

KickAss MkII - July 21, 2011 01:31 PM (GMT)
I've read the following over the past month or so:
The Birthing House by Christopher Ransom.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Birthing-House-Chr...m/dp/0751541710 A psychological horror. This was given to me by a woman I work with as she thought I'd enjoy it. It was a good read to be fair, but towards the end it gets very ambiguous and I'm pretty old fashioned, I like to be told a story, not have to finish a book wondering how the author linked it all together because its not explained fully enough. So, it was enjoyable, but the ending asks a bit too much of the reader, in my opinion. 7/10
The Haunting of James Hastings by Christopher Ransom.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Haunting-James-Has...11254191&sr=1-1Another horror by this author, which was in the mini library of left-behind books in the hotel I was in on holiday. As I'd just finished the other one, I thought I'd give it a bash. This one was decidedly more far-fetched than the other, and is about a bloke who looks like a white rapper with peroxide hair (guess who?) so becomes his body double...and all the events unfold from there. Its a bit surreal, but it was an OK read. 6/10
I, Alex Cross by James Patterson.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/I-Alex-Cross-James...11254472&sr=1-1Yet another addition to the Cross series, and I have to say, I dunno if maybe I've become desensitised to it all, but it isn't a patch on Kiss the Girls or any of the earlier ones. It had its moments of filth and gore, but even so, I barely batted an eye. Still, it was an enjoyable story. 7/10.
Contest by Matthew Reilly.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Contest-ebook/dp/B...11254749&sr=1-1This book was AWESOME. The first few pages I was a bit dubious, but then I got into it and 'whoosh!', I'd read it in 4 hours. Its just brilliant. I can't describe what its about without giving away massive pieces of plot...but I could not put it down. Fantastic. Please read it. 9.5/10.
Spares by Michael Marshall Smith
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spares-Michael-Mar...11254971&sr=1-1I've read this a million times, its an old favourite. Gruesome and intelligent and mind-screwingly violent. 10/10.
