Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系, vijuaru kei?) refers to a movement among Japanese musicians, that is characterized by the use of eccentric, sometimes flamboyant looks. This usually involves striking make-up, unusual hair styles and elaborate costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics. Some sources state that Visual Kei refers to a music genre, or to a sub-genre of J-rock (a term referring to Japanese rock in general), with its own particular sound, related to glam-rock, punk and metal. However most insider sources state that Visual Kei's unique clothing and make-up fashions, and participation in the related sub-culture, is equally as important as the sound of the music itself in the use of the term as while similarities can be drawn between some bands; most are from widely different genres including but not limited to Pop, power metal, classical, rap, electronic, and death metal.

I think the only reason why VK stands out from any other JROCK band is because of the 'costumes' the band members wear everytime they go on stage and perform. If you listen carefully, they are somewhat similar. Naitomea has been producing rock ballads and pop-ish themed songs, not like the good old VK-style days.
that being said, i do not say that I hate VK. Their music is really great, especially the lead singers whose vocals are superb. Yomi from Naitomea is a mentionable, while that guy (forgot his name) from Gazette is good as well.

My favourite visual kei artists are X JAPAN and miyavi, so far. I don't really bother about their image (miyavi dresses up like girls sometimes - kind of freaky at first etc.) but all that matters to me is their music. They produce a lot of good music - Miyavi has a different approach in music where his styles are unique; making him stand out from the crowd, and X JAPAN is one of the most influential Japanese band of all times.
I really :suki miyavi...

I really dislike visual kei. It's just a trick to sell a lot of records and become popular among teenage girls, pretty much like boybands.
There are only twon visual kei bands I like, X Japan and Dir en grey. On the other hand, X Japan is/was just a hair-metal band and Dir en grey quit visual kei and hate it nowadays...

i think VK fans really dig the looks and make-up, heck, that's what VK is about in the first place..visual, but nonetheless, i don't really care too much about that, and that's not big of an issue.
well, VK really is a fusion of fashion and music, so it really appeals on teenage girls, but that's not bad either.
i love Dir en grey and as we all know they have turned their backs in Visual Kei.

I agree. Their looks complement the emotion they are trying to convey in their music, especially the dark themes and painful experiences.
And it's really hard to separate the looks of the artist from his/her music. YUI and Shiina Ringo are two of the prettiest girls on Earth and it doesn't make me like their music less. From boybands, to hardcore metal bands, to popstars. to hiphop artists, all of them have distinctive looks that they are trying to sell in some way, along with their music. In VK's case, they just take it to the next level. They use striking costumes (popularized in the US by Marilyn Manson) and androgynous aesthetics (much like how it was used by David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Prince).
Of course, as part of the mainstream, some VK bands should sound like mainstream music. They write poppy tunes and ballads, but they make it a point to experiment on music through metal, electronica and some hip hop. If you really listen to their music closely, I think you'll realize that their music is "different" and not really intended for teenage girls.
