Wow. Gone for a weekend and I come back to this.
I missed whatever happened with the site, but it sounds like there was too much YUI love (or hate, according to this thread), and it couldn't handle it all. So I can't comment on that experience, but hopefully it will be back up soon and I can see what's going on.
I wasn't really involved in the making of the site (other than some suggestions and testing), so I don't have any personal stake in it. And anything that didn't work or things you think aren't a good idea should be reported to the admins and you guys did that, which is good.
Some of the comments, however, were outright rude. Honestly, there is no excuse for belittling or personal flames. These guys worked very, very hard to bring something new and fresh to the YL online community. If you don't like it, that's fine, but there are polite ways to disagree and voice your displeasure. Imagine you did something you thought would be very nice for other people and they would enjoy. Then imagine people saying things like "it sucks" or "thanks for screwing it up". How would you feel?
Now, perhaps this wasn't made clear enough for everyone, and it should have been, but the forum is unchanged. The forum, even when the site is back up, can be accessed completely separately. You can completely avoid the new site and only see this forum, exactly as it is now. Let me say this one more time, because this is the main point that I think people had a problem with: The new site is NOT REPLACING the forum. Don't like the site? Don't visit it, and continue to enjoy the forum.
One last note: There was no poll because Brad was trying to surprise everyone with the new site. This wasn't done to keep people out of the decision making. It wasn't done because the new mods feel like they own the site, or any other ulterior motive. It was done because it was supposed to be a "present" to the YL community. A gift. Perhaps not one everyone likes, but then, we all get those sometimes.

I totally agree.
they worked tirelessly for weeks. I mean you have to acknowledge their effort even if you dont like the concept
There are slight bugs but they can be fixed. From what i have read people are moaning about the bugs and maybe layout issues which can be fixed and changed.
This is surely a change for the better. You can always continue using the forum using different links. How hard is it to bookmark a different link about 2 seconds unless you are an idiot.
to be fair the forum is dedicated to YUI, i dont really care what other members think, if i can access YUI news quicker than scrolling through pages inside the forum then im happy. Plus the translation is with the first post making it much easier to read then constantly fliking between first post and translation if you like reading the japanese to learn it.

hmm... i suck at ranting to these kinda stuff, so i'ma put it simple.
dang... i really like the site. i think it's a good thing, and much easier for all YUI-addicts to navigate through her stuff.
PERIOD.
:good agreed. you all have put a lot of time + effort into this ..you've considered for a global audience and what YLers really like + want in the forum. Creating the fansite, VISUALLY shows more about YUI and helps organize the info YUI fans would like to know. you've also considered the long-run of YL--moving it forward. Change is good. It will spawn new avenues and different challenges....now that's more exciting to me.

way to tell them, mrsean! seriously, i don't understand why people make such a big deal about it. i mean, as long as the forum is still here, that's all that matters isn't it? anyway, i personally was glad to see an actual "fansite". it seems pretty convenient for finding info, news, etc. too bad it went "poof" the next day i checked it. hope to see it back up soon. nice work people :good

To the people who hate the changes I can only say one thing;
It's really ok to express yourself, but to some of you I want to say; stop being a jerk! I mean, offcourse you can comment on it but you don't have to bring brad & staff down after all this trouble they went through, I mean things just need to be worked out, but it will work! And about the test thing someone said earlier, you should have seen IRC chat the last few weeks! The only thing they were doing was testing and testing and testing :what Offcourse you can dislike the changes, but it's about the way you put your comments, which doesn't have to be so rude.
I do agree on the part where people ask for a BIG HUGE link to the forum =P
