What kind of fan would I be to claim that this triology, His Dark Materials, is better than Harry Potter, you ask? I wouldn't have an answer for you...
I enjoy Harry Potter for it's complexity and dealing with issues, such as prejudice, and it's realism. Just the same, I love His Dark Materials for (roughly) the exact same reason. This trilogy deals more with (an undercurent) religious aspects and is complex in it's own right. (You could say it's got a little bit of Harry Potter, a helping of Narnia, and a dash of Lord of the Rings.)
And now that I think about it, it seems a bit more like Harry Potter than I thought. The first book, The Golden Compass, reminds me of a certain significant scenes in Order of the Phoenix. The second book, The Sublte Knife give me a Prisoner of Azkaban impression and the third, The Amber Spyglass (and my favorite out of the three) offers more of a Half Blood Prince feel.
It's much more emotional. You really get the feel for the main character, Lyra's, transition from childhood to adulthood... But, if you're looking for some humor, you will find little. I always recommend this book to anyone who has a voracious literary appetite. So... READ IT!
