Title: updating avatars

I tried to upload a new avatar, but it will not show up. Must they be approved, or what?

No, avatars do not need to be approved (but will be removed if they are objectionable).
I can see your new avatar. Is this the avatar you had trouble uploading? If so, it seems the problem has been solved.

I am having trouble updating mine again. I uploaded a new one (100x100) and pressed the 'update' button, and nothing happened.
