Some of the guys at my local GW are starting a Blood Bowl tournament(?) and they've asked me to get a team together and play... I've never tried it before, so I was hoping for some advice on things like which teams are fun/good to play with. happy.gif I was looking at Amazons or Elves... Any opinions?

I've not played it before, so had to ask a friend what it was... his summary 'it's like an aggressive game of American football' lol

Now I'm intrigued.. let us know how you both get on!

I played a succesfull orc-team (it won the league where I live) and a almost just as succesfull goblinteam, so the first thing I'll say is:"Greenskins are da best!" (when it comes to bloodbowl.. with warhammer they definitally going down against Wood elves biggrin.gif)

If you need the rules, they can be found at the specialist games section of the GW site. There you'll find a file which contains all the temas available. When I looked at amazones and the 4 different kind of elven teams I came to this conclusion. You're definitally going for a passing, running and scoring game, instead of a bashing, fouling, running and eventually scoring game laugh.gif.

Looking at the amazones a few things catch my eye. They're alot cheaper than all the elven teams. And they all have the dodge skill which gives them re-rolls when trying to get past players from the other's team. Besides that, they have mediocre strenght and agility. The things I don't like are the fact that they all have the same movenent value(which is a fairly average movement value), even the catchers and blitzers, which all move faster in other teams. And another thing that I don't realy like is the fact that they all have low armour value and so they're very easy to bash to the ground and out off the field.

Now for all the elven teams. They're all cost an above average amound of gold. But in return, you get an above average agility which makes it a lot easier to pass and catch the ball and to get past players of the other team. Another positive thing is that their catchers and blitzers have above average movement. Now to look at the different elven teams:

Elven teams (I'm still wondering what Kind of elves these ones are):

They're the elven choice with the cheapest linemen, which is good since those guys will be the core of your team, but they're more expensive than humans, orcs or amazons. The different players have the base skills that are importent for them. The only problem (in my opinion) is that every player has fairly low Armour Value(except for the blitzers, who should have a higher AV since they have to bash theopponents to the ground). Their Catchers and blitzers look really usable because of the extra skill, but this also makes themmore expensive.

Dark elves:

More costly than elves, but they all have better AV (except for the witch elves). they're lack of catchers is a minor disadvantage compared to the others. But the witch elves look very fun to play with (looking at their skills) and I think the team will de very good if you use them in a running game instead of a throw and catch game, at least until you've had the chance to give someone the catch skill.

High elf teams:

They look a bit like an upgraded human team. Fairly basic but with a higher agility(which makes them more expensive than humans). I think it could work really well, exept that it will be hard in the beginning to get reserve players and re-roll counters because of the cost.

Wood elf teams:

Very fast! Even the linemen are fast! These teams can really outrun their opponents. But off course, just like in warhammer they've got a low armour value so they're easy to knock out off the game, which isn't really something you want with a team with expensive players. But they really have the potential to give you high scores.

I haven't really used any of these teams myself and based my findings only on looking at the stats and skills (and experience as an opponent). I'm also more of bashing, fouling, running and eventually scoring game-player, than a passing, running and scoring game-player. I do know that both gamestyles have just as much potential which is more than 'a pick-up your teammate with the ball and toss him as far away as possible'-gamestyle which goblins and halflings are known to use (although I should be carefull with that statement, knowing that in an american bloodbowl-league a halfling team ended up first blink.gif). I do hope the things written down here help you a bit.

As a last comment, If I had to choose between one of the elven teams and the amazones, I'd choose High elves myself. Mainly because they're a bit cheaper than dark elves which share the same higer AV with them than the other teams I can choose from. This makes them more capable of stopping enemies that try to break through the lines. happy.gif

An excellent analysis by Arganos.

I have played Blood Bowl for years, and like Arganos I am curently using an Orc team in the local Blood Bowl ladder. Orcs have excellent armour, which makes them a stayer in a league, where injuries and deaths carry over. They are also quite mobile. And I have a troll and goblin in my team for those desperate one-turn scores!

Amazons are the best of the 'human' teams. They all have dodge, and can take block as an upgrade, and are cheap as chips, and their re-rolls are only 40K! The downside is the armour, you will lose a few, but when the survivors have block and dodge it is very difficult to knock them over.

My favourite elf teams are elfs and wood elfs. When I play any elven team you generally want to get away from the opposition, and progressivly retreat whilst enveloping the flanks. Armour 7 and strength 3 virtually dictates this. The great thing about Elfs is their cheapness. 60K for an Agility 4 lineman is good, especially as you generally use them as a meat shield for the ball carrier. Also, Nerves of Steel on the catchers is awesome, and Sidestep on the Blitzers really annoys your opponent.

Wood Elves? Very expensive, but the movement 9 catchers, who come with dodge, make this a scoring machine. The single best thing about the team is the wardancers. Its that Block, Dodge and leap. Elven teams generally have a problem getting the ball from 'hard' teams who form a cage around the ball carrier and bash their way upfield. The wardancer can leap in, knock over the ball carrier (who rarely has dodge or block) and then the rest of the elves close in to stop anyone picking the ball up.

If you do play, make sure you take minimal 'characters' (ie only 1 wardancer, 1 thrower, 1 catcher) etc and use maximum linemen and re-rolls. And an apothecary is a MUST! Our current ladder is topped by Wood Elves, who won their second game 5-2! Remember, all elves have agility 4. They can pick the ball up, pass, catch and dodge like crazy. The linement can do it on their own!

I was in a league last year and played Woodies. They were awesome. I was extremely lucky and no one got killed or even knocked out for more than a game and I only ever had one player out a a time. That was until we hit the playoffs and I made the semifinals and got brutally beaten by the Orc player that came second in the league.

I loved the woodies. The wardancers are amazing. I had one starting from my own end zone, just over some orcs, knock the ball from the orc player on the 1 yard line, pick up the ball, dodge away, run over to another player who threw it to another player in the end zone and scored a TD to win the game.

I ended up with 2 Move 10 catchers, 2 move 9 wardancers. Get an apothecary. Fan factor is amazing, you'll need a couple of re-rolls and you'll wanna grab a treeman after a few games when you've got the cash.

At the end of the season I gave the team away and grabbed a skaven team which I'm very very slowly painting up:

Skaven Team

CHeers,

Spanky.

i know they didn't get a mention in ure initial post Kavain, but the lizardmen team is easily one of the best around, with saurus acting as blockers, the skinks with their mV 7 or 8 (i haven't played for a few years) and relatively cheap cost means that they can easily hack at opponents and not need to worry about your player being sent off.

We're starting a league of our own here, and of course my trusty Orc team, " Gork's guttrippas " have already been picked up from under the dust. But I've been playing with the idea of using an elven team as well. Now my basic line-up is:

2 blitzers,
2 catchers,
1 throwers and
6 linemen.

I would like to stick with this line-up since with 2 blizers and 2 catchers you have that little extra speed in your team which can make all the difference. But now, after purchasing 1 re-roll as well, I have enough gold left for 1 extra linemen or an apothecary. So I have to choose between a reserve player or a guy who can make sure that at least one player per game, gets a second chance on the pitch. Could anyone tell me what the best choice is?

Finally decided on Amazons... I simply prefer the models! tongue.gif

I played my first game with my half-painted team last Thursday - it was great fun! I lost (0-1) but it was a teaching game, so I'm quite pleased with myself... We'll see how trampled my girls get in future! rolleyes.gif

Oh, and I played against lizardmen, so I'm now all too well-aware how agile those blasted stunty skinks are! dry.gif

Cool team! The blue really looks good on your amazones. Reminds me of my orcs. I'll post a pic as soon as I've finished my 3rd an 4th blitzer. By the way, cool how you can see which model is what kind of player, knowing that you made them from mordheim models. happy.gif
