Title: A Call to Arms!
Description: Spellsinger Competition 2
Servant of Isha - October 1, 2006 04:04 PM (GMT)
Welcome, members of the Glade, to the Spellsingers second competition. This time the object is: Army Design. We are looking for the most creative, fun and playable army lists you can design. There will be 3 judges - Highborn Sycath, B-rad*** and me, Servant of Isha. Each judge will be marking the following categories:
Originality & Creativity - 10pts
Playability - 10pts(including both how fun it is to play with and how well it will do)
Small story/Fluff piece (i.e. theme) - 5pts(very little is required, unlike the fluff competition; 100-150 words. This does not have to be a single piece, it can be split between units/characters, though if it is then uniformity will be expected [no missing out the 'basic' units])
Miscellaneous - 5pts(variable, & can include things like presentation of the army list etc since it's an overall impression - up to the judge's discretion)
Giving a total out of
30pts. The 3 scores out of 30 will be added up to make a final score out of 90. First, second and third places will get a number of kindred points each (exact numbers to be confirmed), and a special title may well be up for grabs for the winner.
Text in addition to the fluff (such as tactics/ideas) may be included; it won't be marked specifically, but it may get you a mark on overall impression - who knows!
Army lists should be either
1500pts or
2000pts; no other points values will be accepted. The lists may go a maximum of 5pts over, but
may be penalised for doing so in the miscellaneous category. There are no limits per kindred, though each person may only submit a single entry each.
The lists have to be made from the current wood elf army book, though dogs of war/regiments of renown may be used as rare/(special) choices in the normal manner. Special characters from the book and from the GW websites are allowed, so long as the army follows the normal restrictions. Player-made special characters are forbidden, as are characters from previous editions that haven't been brought up to date with the current army book.
All entries should be sent via PM to me by the
17th of November. Do NOT post your army in this thread, though feel free to use the thread for any questions you may have etc.
----------
Update (18th December): I've marked the entries, and am currently waiting for a reply from B-rad*** with his. Sycath has had computer problems, so will unfortunatly have to do his again; see
This topic for details. Thank you for the turnout, there was a good level of participation!
Thrask - October 1, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
Does it have to be a wood elf list? :ph43r:
Servant of Isha - October 1, 2006 07:18 PM (GMT)
Ah, I forgot to mention that - thanks for bringing it up. It does have to be an Asrai* list, though the theming can be of a different origin if you like.
*and/or forest spirit
Silly Dragon Elf the Third - October 1, 2006 07:21 PM (GMT)
Can we use special character like Orion and Drycha? Or what about the ones online you know Ariel and Skaw?

Servant of Isha - October 1, 2006 07:25 PM (GMT)
Special characters from the book and from the GW websites are allowed, so long as the army follows the normal restrictions. Many of them won't be appropriate (Orion or Ariel in such a small points limit doesn't leave much space for enough units while staying original). Player-made special characters are forbidden, as are characters from previous editions that have not been brought up to date with the current army book.

Looks good Servant of Isha, will give my kindred a heads up! ;)

Foxtale - October 2, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)
Waiiit.... I'm judging? Guess that means I can't enter. T_T
Kindred points from this competition will carry over into next year's kindred competition.
Servant of Isha - October 2, 2006 06:36 AM (GMT)
You knew you were judging..... (lol).
It does mean that there's only 1 Wind Rider that's likely to enter.... you can pass judgeing-ship over to B-rad*** if you'd rather and he agrees.
Foxtale - October 2, 2006 08:14 AM (GMT)
No no. I'll enter and just have my vote be an average of the other two judges. <_<
If that's alright with the other members?
Altithir - October 2, 2006 11:20 AM (GMT)
Its fine with me.
also, SoI, when you say "all Asrai" you do mean Forest Spirits too, right...
Servant of Isha - October 2, 2006 03:26 PM (GMT)
Yes, forest spirits can of course be used. It's an annoying thing to phrase elegantly; you can say from the wood elf army book, but when you're saying a wood elf/asrai it technically needs to be specified....annoying (I was careful how I phrased it in the main post, but not the reply - sorry for any confusion).
That's fine by me Foxtale, and I'm sure no one else will have any objections.
B-rad*** - October 2, 2006 05:04 PM (GMT)
I can judge if you prefer Foxtale, as I am no longer a member of any kindred.
So yeah, enter away.
Servant of Isha - October 2, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
You two can decide between you in your little mod forum. In the mean time, could somebody sticky this please? :ph43r: Thanks.
EDIT: thanks for the sticky.
Highborn Sycath - October 2, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
i wish i could enter. the pains of being an admin.
oh well. Bring on the entries!
Foxtale - October 3, 2006 08:57 AM (GMT)
Okay, B-Rad, if you don't want to enter you can go right ahead and judge in my place. :D Thx.
Servant of Isha - October 3, 2006 07:21 PM (GMT)
Ok then, that's sorted, B-rad*** will take the place of Foxtale in the judging. I'll go amend the first post....
Servant of Isha - October 29, 2006 07:21 PM (GMT)
Due to lots of verious concerts happening soon after the original finishing date (and before), I've moved the date back by a week, to the 17th of November. This doesn't mean you can slack off, get your entries in as soon as possible!
I'm quite surprised on the lack of enthusiasm for this - I'm sure you've all drummed up army lists in your spare time. Even if you think they aren't brilliant, get them in! There aren't any limits on entries per kindred, so don't feel you just aren't good enough; every effort helps.
If people are being scared off by the fluff bit - don't be. We're not looking for writing skill here particularly. If you feel like writing a small story or inventive description, then all the better, but a few lines saying a little about the army is fine. Even if you don't have any fluff wirtten at all send your entry in - you could be picked out for being superb in another category.
If kindred leaders could encourage their kindred to join in, that would be much appreciated!
Servant of Isha.
Nelyafinwë - November 8, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
Is the Fluff all text we can have there? Or can we write some words about the purpose of certain units/battleplan?
Servant of Isha - November 8, 2006 09:42 PM (GMT)
Certainly you may add extra text for things such as battleplan ideas/unit uses; they won't be marked specifically, though they may get you a mark or two on overall impression if you're lucky. It certainly won't get you marked down, so long as you don't waffle on for a page and a half!
Servant of Isha.
P.S If anyone who has sent a version in feels they wish to add something or change something, feel free to send in the new version, which will be used in place of the previous. Of course that is only up until the closing date; after the 17 of November nothing more will be accepted.

Just a reminder to everyone that you have just over 24 hours before the due date arrives!

Servant of Isha - November 16, 2006 04:10 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the reminder to everyone Lindsay, this is indeed their last chance - get those entries in!
Servant of Isha.
Servant of Isha - November 18, 2006 09:47 PM (GMT)
Ok, the competition is over! I've recieved 8 excelent entries, and no more will be accepted. They'll be sent to Highborn Sycath and B-rad*** and will be judged in due course.
Thank you for everyone who sent in army lists, real effort has been put in to them and they look really good! It was nice to see that people started sending them in a week before the closing date, rather than leaving it to the last minute (although Glim's entry did get in at 11:41 on the last day - just in time!).
Servant of Isha.
Shandrakor - January 11, 2007 07:06 AM (GMT)
So, any word on what's going on behind the scenes for judging this competition? Just a little curious since it's been going on 2 months.
Glim - January 20, 2007 12:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah was also wondering what happend to our entry
Silly Dragon Elf the Third - January 20, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)

Nelyafinwë - February 12, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
Uhm... I know this doesn´t help... but where are the results?!
Lindsay - February 13, 2007 03:44 AM (GMT)
Yes, finding out the results would be nice. *Waits patiently*

Schmeag - February 13, 2007 06:07 AM (GMT)
B-rad*** has been away for sometime, and he was marking; maybe it has something to do with that.
Geep - February 13, 2007 07:07 AM (GMT)
Yes- it does a bit. Judging has now been passed to me, and i'll try and get it done soon. Sorry all for the delay.
Schmeag - February 13, 2007 07:46 AM (GMT)
Thanks go to Geep for taking up the slack!
Servant of Isha - February 14, 2007 11:00 AM (GMT)
Yes, sorry about this! Geep has been brilliant in taking up the roll of judge, and hopefully we'll have results soon. Highborn Sycath managed to forget (and I'd avoided PMing him during his exams and busy period), though he should be on it now.
*grumbles and mutters that he'd marked them in November...*
Sorry guys! I know how annoying it is, thanks for keeping patient!
Servant of Isha.
Glim - February 17, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
Well at least you've always be on it SoI.
hopefully it helps
Servant of Isha - February 19, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
I've received Geep's marks and comments (very detailed and extensive comments may I add, I was very impressed with them), and am now only waiting for Highborn Sycaths. Hopefully not long now!
Servant of Isha.
Glim - March 9, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Hey Servant of Isha, any word of Sycath yet? (cath yet rimes sort of :p )
Servant of Isha - March 9, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
*glares genialy at people who should have replaced this with the new thread*
I.e, can this be unstickied and the winners stickied please? Thanks . I should have asked earlier.
Have a
Link to the Winners thread. There's some excellent reading there!
On a side note, I thought about making collection of army lists (like a number of other sites have, and it seems to work quite well). Maybe not yet, but if we have another comp for example, we can compile various army lists (or links to the army lists) in one place. I know the Druchii have quite a large one split into different categories that works really well. The Asur's one isn't as well set out (hard to find things, and some things seem to be posted randomly there too...).
