Title: The Battle for Skull Pass
Phsyco - September 10, 2006 11:35 AM (GMT)
Me and my brother bought the new battle for skull pass box set yesterday for the new rules and the models. My brother collects Orcs and Goblins so he had the Goblins and I had the Dwarfs. You get 850 points in each so it's a pretty even battle but who do you think would win. 850 points of mainly gobins invading skull pass or 850 points of defending Dwarfs with a cannon aswell?

I voted dwarves, They are tougher and better suited (armour wise) than the goblins. The cannon too should help here. But goblins would have numbers on their side. Also terrain plays a huge part to battles.

The goblins outnumber the dwarves too much... and if you use the battle for skull pass character rules the goblin general has a high (for a goblin) Ld, so panic isn't too much of a problem
Only two dwarf units can get a rank and the goblins have three units with full +3 (and spider riders don't count as fast cav if you use the stats from the box).
But then, by the booklet rules rank bonus doesn't count...
Personally, i hate that introductory book- it confused me and is completely ignorant of some very important basic rules (eg. Charging should come first in the turn!).

Yes Geep, I agree with you, but still I think the Dwarfs would win because they also have a unit of Dwarf Miners which can tunnel underground during the game. That could come in extremely handy!

I voted dwarfs because I have played dwarfs for 8 years! I couldn't vote against them. That said, it should be a pretty even fight. The dwarf army that is given is not at all what I would take in a 850 point army but it will suit. Unless the dwarf player goes into the game saying "they're only goblins" and plays stupid they should do alright.

DWARFS because I will start collecting them when I get the skull pass set.

I voted dwarves just because I've played against both races before and well, dwarves are tough. A couple of my friends were going to pay half each for the battle for skull pass box set. But one of them pulled out because he considered the dwarves no that great sculpt because of the shield moulded into the model, makes it look a tad "fat."

I don't think the Dwarves could win - I know they can! I went to a GW store in Melbourne last Thursday, and they invited me to play a game of Skull Pass using the new rules! I played as Dwarves.
It was a good game, but in the end I pulled through and won. My unit of the match was the miners with the Slayer Hero, they managed to break two gobbo units and kill a troll! B)

That's a good idea! Putting the Slayer Hero in the miners unit would make it a very strong unit as they already have a rather hefty strength plus the Slayer's 4 attacks! I had him on his own last game I played and he died to the troll after a round or two of fighting!

I assume Marcus means the Slayer hero moved near and supported the miners. The slayer hero can't join a unit.
In the game i played the goblins won. Admittedly i was in a rush and none too tactical, but the spider riders charged the miners and killed the whole front rank- broke and easily caught them. My cannon misfired first turn, rcovering in time for one pathetic grapeshot on the spider riders before it was eaten. My thunderers were doing well against the goblin archers until two total power gaze of Mork's killed the entire unit (in two turns). This was by the end of third turn.
My warriors with thane beat off the two ranked goblin units (one twice), beat off the troll (twice) and ran down the goblin unit with general. Otherwise though, they couldn't catch anything and some lucky rolling after a charge from the goblin unit i had broken twice before saw me lose the combat and roll double 1 for flee distance. Quickly over.
A single attack from the dwarves without many ranks just can't hold up- even if they don't suffer many casualties.

Oh, I didn't know that but I haven't ever played Dwarfs before. I still try supporting them with him.
Unlucky with the game but what level was that Mage? When I played I think the lvl 1 mage only cast one spell and it was crap!

I think the wizard was 1st level, with Gaze of Mork (?) D6 or 2D6 Str4 hits or something... he had the assistance of the Idol of Mork for power dice. He miscast once, but suffered nothing serious.
Going straight from the box set he uses the lore of fire, but we used semi-box rules semi-proper rules. I felt it made it more sensible.
Phsyco - September 13, 2006 12:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah. OK, do you know what the idol of Mork does?
Geep - September 13, 2006 12:38 PM (GMT)
Adds one to the caster's power dice pool...?
It's on the Battle for Skull Pass website.
Oddly though, the grudge pony is nowhere to be seen (except as a stand in terrain piece
I want to be able to use the pony... (Pony! ATTACK!!!)
aadne - September 13, 2006 12:43 PM (GMT)
loooool is the wagon and the pony only terrain????
I was hoping it to be a chariot or something!
Just imagine the massive hit power from the power. It will be like the most dangerous dwarf unit....... a shame.
Phsyco - September 13, 2006 02:53 PM (GMT)
Cool. Ok. It's really annoying that the grudge pony isn't on there because I really want to use it!
Geep - September 14, 2006 09:01 AM (GMT)
I think i'll invent rules for it and post them around here somewhere... it'll be a pony of doom...
The tied up trollslayer also has no official use (altough it'll definitely be a taunt whenever i play dwarves).
Really, i'm very disappointed with the Battle of Skull Pass rules- it could've been a simple but very cool objective based campaign.
Phsyco - September 16, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
I agree. Also it is meant to be teaching new players to play bt it misses out some of the very important rules like rank bonuses!
