BIO:
A two-seat supersonic fighter-interceptor, the Mikoyan MiG-31, code-named "Foxhound" by NATO is the successor to the MiG-25 "Foxbat". Like it's predecessor, it was initially mistaken as a super-dogfighter by western nations. Despite being labeled as an 'improved Foxbat' in reality the MiG-31 is a completely new aircraft, with greater capability than the MiG-25. The development of the MiG-31 began in the mid-1970s and by September 16, 1975 the first prototype flew. Approximately, 500 MiG-31s have been produced and at least 370 continue to serve the Russian air force.

The MiG-31M is an upgraded variant with a new weapons control system designated Zaslon-M. The aircraft is equipped with a radar featuring a doubled effective range, which is capable of simultaneously tracking and engage more targets. The MiG-31M main armament is six long-range missiles under the fuselage in tandem, three abreast and four RVV-AE medium-range missiles under the wings, the cannon is dismantled. The aircraft design is somewhat updated - the middle fuselage fairing cross-section is larger, the cockpit canopy features a caseless windshield and smaller area of the operator's transparency, the wing is equipped with large leading-edge extensions, the infrared direction finder under the forward fuselage is non-retractable.

It is powered by enhanced D-30F-6M engines. The internal fuel tank capacity was increased. The aircraft has an in-flight refueling capability. The ECM and individual defence systems are united into the integral defense system. The operator's cockpit control board equipment was changed. Test-pilot Boris Orlov and test-navigator Leonid Popov flew out the prototype (registration number 051) on 21 December, 1985. In the late eighties, the Sokol aircraft plant (NGAZ) built the development batch of the MiG-31Ms, which underwent the official testing successfully.

MIG-31 was made to engage targets at long range using the AA-9 Amos Long Range AA missile.

The cockpit design was that way, since during the time that the MIG-31 was being designed (late 60's), the Soviets relied on GCI (Ground Control Interception) and thus put low priority on the need for visibility out of the cockpit since pilots mostly stared at their radar screens or at whatever data the GCI stations was feeding them. What was deemed necessary though was a powerful radar to burn through jamming and guide the missiles to targets, high speed/acceleration but with long range capable of flying patrols out over the arctic (and other barren areas) to intercept the big bombers before they got too close to launch nuclear cruise missiles.

One of the few aircraft that comes with seats that give you a massage biggrin.gif, a big help on loong missions.

Mig-31 is reportedly able to intercept cruise missiles.

And the Su-34 (a.k.a Su-32) will have those seats too. That darn thing also has a toilet, galley and pressurized cockpit.

Yes siree. Mig-31 is fast. Uses dual Soloviev turbofan engines. Huge ones, like the ones in the SU-47.

This beast has one huge flaw: it's way too large. I mean, it's ok for its tremendous speed (try firing a missile at maximum speed, you'll go as fast as the missile itself), but it has an obscene mobility, which is comprehensible after looking at the bulky size of the plane. Still one exceptional aircraft IMHO, someday I'll have to master it in ACZ.

Its an interceptor, mentioned earlier, its designed for one hit passes. Its atrocious at dogfighting, but it was never designed for it. Its basically the Russian interpretation of the F-14, which is more manueverable.

Fact: The Mig-31s vacuum tube radar IIRC (or was that the Mig-25?) is so powerful that on runways it must be shut off, or nearby animals will be killed, due to the high intensity waves.

Lol, I knew that only the Foxbat had that vacuum-tube radar system. Pretty interesting that the Foxhound has it too.

One of main differences from both is their radar. One of their reason to build MiG-31 is to use stronger and advanced radar. MiG-31 uses PESA radar, I don't think it still uses vacuum tube.
