Bitten on the Sst Trail this morning by a German Shepherd dog.

Single canine tooth puncture to upper arm - very minor, but took myself off to the doctor for a tetanus boost and antibiotics. However, looked very impressive an hour later when I got to work with half an arm coated in claret!

My friend recently ignored such a small wound and, four days later, he was hours away form having his arm amputated, so best safe than sorry.

Anyway, if you see a Phil Mitchel style man in his 50s with such a dog and a smaller scruffy dog, shout a warning so he can put the lead on. Was near Utkinton. Watch out Sarah and Steve!

Blimey Pete, what a shock that must have been, seeing Phil Mitchell near Utkinton. Glad you got it sorted out, well done mate...

Did he blame you, or say that he's only playing / being friendly ?

I've been bitten twice by dogs, once on the upper leg by a sheep dog when mountainbiking near Marple (I was pushing the bike at the time) and once when I was backpacking the Pennine Way by one of those yappy little rat-like terrier dogs. Can't remember what they are callled but I hate them with a passion.

First occasion, when I got home I reported it to the police and a week later had to go back to Marple to visit the farm with the policeman for a chat. The policeman told me that he had visited the farm earlier in the week and had to get his baton out to protect himself. The owner was given a stern warning and told to keep his dogs under control as any future incidents would result in prosecution and the dog being destroyed.

Second one (Yorkshire Terrier - I remember now). Hate the little &%$@ angry.gif Bitten on the back of my calf walking through some cottages on the Pennine Way. The stupid woman owner then blamed me !! I reported her to the local authority (Northumberland) and they told me they would investigate. They actually got back to me after I got home and advised that they had had several similar reports and were investigating further.

Seriously Peter, I would definitely look at taking this further. The owner SHOULD know his dog's temperament and keep it under control. Next time it could be a child with horrific consequences. Too many dog owners just cannot be bothered to train their dogs or take responsibility for them.

I do actually like dogs, just not the ones that are not under control.

Yes Paul, I should have. But by the time it had sunk in, I was some way down the trail.

The tooth hole has healed over already. The tetanus booster is now sore!

Gosh Peter, that's bad news. I must say I agree whole heartedly with Paul. It gives all dog owners a bad name !!

Shaka thinks it's a poor show too !! woof !

Fairly lucky with dogs for my first 30 odd years of running with a couple of minor bites but loads of really heated arguments with dog owners. However since moving to Burwardsley I've been had three times.
Unfortunately in the first incident, involving a Viemararmer & my backside on Maiden Castle, I was unable to ascertain the name & address of the owner. He merely wanted to fight me which is of little use when you are a coward & a whimp.
A local Labador dog ripped my tracksters & scared my calf but a civilised telecon with the owner's wife meant that was it. Fido had terrorised their decorators & the local postie & was finally sent back from whence he came.
The last incident involved an Alsatian which came through the hedge from the gamekeeper's garden & bit my hand. I reported this to the police but susequently learnt that the dog had been destroyed so was able to prevent any unpleasantness by informing the local bobby & saving his visit. The keeper let me have some timber so we are friends.
I do feel it is important to report attacks by dogs. I am used to dogs but often think that if that was my grandson who is rather wary what would be the physical & emotional damage if attacked.
The famous Merseyside Naturalist, the late Eric Hardy, used to reckon the owners spelt the word dog backwards!

A bloke goes to watch Liverpool play at home on a dark stormy November night. He parks his car on a side road off Queens Drive in nearby Croxteth. On locking his car a couple of local lads ask if he'd like his car minding for a couple of quid. He thinks about it and then replies 'thanks, but there's no need to worry, I'm leaving my two German Shepherds in the car'.
To which one of the lads asks 'can they put out fires?'

I seem to have a dog related incident almost every time I run on the Sandstone trail these days angry.gif

Could be his aftershave Laynie?

I used to have trouble with dogs ,when visiting patients-2 Dobermans bearing down on you can be a frightening sight!

I have carried a samsonite briefcase for a number of years-a perfect shield against smaller dogs( but not very practical running along the sandstone trail)

QUOTE (mikewhiteside @ Sep 27 2009, 05:15 PM)
He merely wanted to fight me which is of little use when you are a coward & a whimp.

Is this the same Phil Mitchell-type that Pete saw earlier.

So Mr Clouseau, we are looking for a bald headed man, probably with a labrador, likes a fight, may have lost a lot of weight recently in a bid to disguise his slightly more rotund former self, and could live somewhere between Utkinton and Burwardsley, such as Tattenhall........case could be sol-ved

Clouseau: does yer dewg bite?
Phil Mitchell-type: No
Clouseau: Nice doggy (bends down to pat dog, which snarls and bites him)
I thought you said yer dewg did not bite!
Phil Mitchel-type: That... is not my dog!
