Hello. I'm probably not your typical fan of this show. I'm 45-years-old. My 18-year-old daughter loves this show. She talks about it a lot and has asked me for the DVD's. OK so it makes a good x-mas gift. Well, a few months ago I started watching the show. I started with season 1 episode 1 and worked forward. I'm in the middle of watching season 2 episodes now. I'm a little behind the curve, I admit so I'm avoiding any spoiler lists on here. As I said I'm probably not a typical fan, not just because of my age; it seems like the show is more popular with younger crowds, I'm also not someone who is into the whole "hocus pocus" occult theme of the show. I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in demons or hell or any of that jazz. BUT I do appreciate the "good vs. evil" saga that is persistent in most literature and films. I'm an avid Star Wars fan, after-all. LOL I think what I enjoy the most is the references and tribute to the 70's pop culture in the show. The music is great! All of my favorite bands/artists/songs are being played in the background. I like Dean's character. He seems to be a young man stuck in the late 70's or mid 80's. He drives vintage cars and listens to what is now called classic rock. The same music I listen to. But it raises the question in my mind why? Why would the authors/directors of this show make Dean a young man that is stuck in his father's time frame? Is that part of the story or just a way to make older people like me fans of the show? Or is it a way to expose the younger generation to the great music from that era? My daughter didn't get the joke at the end of that one episode in season 2 that co-stared Linda Blair when Dean was asking Sam if she looked familiar and saying that he was hungry for pea soup. LOL I cracked up when he said that. My daughter didn't "get" the reference! I loved the Robert Johnson/Hell Hound episode. The classic blues reference was cool. BUT I've actually have been to Clarksdale, Mississippi where the fabled crossroads where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul happened. I spent the night there in Clarksdale and checked out the Delta Blues Museum and Ground Zero, Morgan Freeman's blues bar in Clarksdale. Yes, Morgan Freeman the actor owns a blues bar in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Go check it out! And while you are there go to the crossroads and wait for Ol' Slewfoot to come and teach you to play the blues.

Welcome to the forums! Actually, the beauty of Supernatural is it can be enjoyed by more than one demographic. So don't worry, there are plenty of 'older' fans (raises hand) who tune in each week. I too enjoy the 70's references and music. I'm not sure why they made Dean a retro man, but it fits--when you get to an episode called Jump the Shark, you'll have a better idea of why he is the way he is but I'll not spoil it for you I hope you enjoy the forums and if you have any questions, just drop any mod or admin a line and they'd be happy to help!

Hi! Welcome to the site. This is a quote from Eric Kripke one why he uses classic rock in the show: | QUOTE | | That was something that was really important to me, coming into the Pilot. I’m from a small town in Ohio and this is the music I listen to. I was a huge Zeppelin fan. So when it came time to write and produce the Pilot, it was so important to me, with all due respect to my beloved network, not to have music that is usually on that network. I was so rabid about it that in the original draft of the pilot, I even wrote in the script, “Cue music. And you can take your anemic alternative pop and shove it up your ass.” And the reason I wrote the scene in the Pilot, where they’re talking about tapes – AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica – if we shoot that and it gets in the pilot, then we have to use my music because it’s already in the show. We had a great time in post-production, figuring out these songs and calling in one morning, “Billy Squire, what about Billy Squire?” I think it is a real signature to the show and it is Midwestern, two guys from Kansas and a muscle car and this is the music they listen to. I love it. The other night there was Joe Walsh and I was laughing, “Yay, Rocky Mountain Way on WB.” |

Welcome, nitewatchman! Yes, Supernatural is definitely a show that can be shared within generations of families. I'm older than the CW likes to think of prime viewers and I watch with my two nephews, now 21 and 23. It is absolutely a show about family. I think Supernatural is great fun, with adventure and humor, and then they mix in universal themes, of good vs. evil, independence and being part of a team, fathers and sons. Yep, I think that's the reason Dean is into retro rock and old muscle cars...it was a way for him to be close to his dad. It's the same reason he wears his dad's leather coat. That's not a spoiler, JDM wears it in S1 episode Something Wicked in the flashback. Besides, like Kripke said, Classic Rock is simply classic! The music has stood the test of time, just like the Impala. Who doesn't appreciate that badass car? Dean appreciates good old-fashioned American quality. Nothing glitzy or fancy, just burgers and beer, good old rock and roll and heavy metal, both in his music and in his cars. Kripke has a story on the car too, how he was going to use a 60's Mustang and his neighbor who pimps out cars for a living told him only wusses drive Mustangs. When Kripke asked what the boys should drive, the guy immediately came back with the '67 Impala..."Because you could hide a body in that trunk!" Kripke googled it and came upon a black model and was hooked...he wanted a car that was threatening and caused you to lock your doors if it pulled up beside you. Both boys have daddy issues, subtle and reserved, but there and they try to work thru them a bit as the show progresses. The show is also about growth, how the characters evolve and how their views shift, how perception isn't always how things were. It's mainly a story about brothers, loyalty, sharing experiences and having each others' backs. I love me a good brother story! I think there are many reasons to watch Supernatural. Great stories, lots of kickass action, humor, emotional underpinnings and just quality writing and acting. I'm glad you can share your appreciation for the show with your daughter. It's a fun way to bond closer. If you're new to the fandom you probably don't know it is the most requested DVD of our troops. I see a lot of reasons why men and women in battle would relate to the Winchesters. They too are engaged in war, a war that doesn't always have clearly defined rules or sides. A battle that can get down and dirty and yet our brothers always hold the line, doing good for the world and saving people. Noble traits. Enjoy! B.J.

welcome.
You know I think part of what makes supernatural great is the music. One of the reasons I love the show. They're not about the pop or the sad love songs. lol

Thanks for the replay. The quote you posted makes sense. The music really does set the tone of the show. I, too, live in Ohio and it seems that classic rock is still very big here, and I think that is awesome. Coming from Kansas, it would make sense for the Winchesters to listen to classic rock.
Now that I've seen a few more episodes I think I understand the 70's references better. Dean's character is basically an extension of his father and would have grown up constantly trying to win his father's approval. I just think it's funny that watching Supernatural with my daughter is a bit like watching animated Disney movies with my 8-year-old son. He doesn't understand the jokes and references in those movies that are more aimed at adults. Likewise, my teen-aged daughter doesn't understand the humor in Supernatural that references 70's pop culture.
I guess the writers of Supernatural have decided to follow the example of what makes Disney films so successful in that there is something for everyone and just about any age group. Well, almost any age group. The show is a bit too graphic and too spooky for someone my son's age.
I'm enjoying the main plot of the show, but I also enjoy the humor. "Yellow Fever" was funny; hearing Dean scream like a girl and act so out of character had me rolling. Keeping Dean's lip synch performance at the end of the show was a good choice! LOL. There are several other tidbits of humor throughout. "Monster Movie" was a nice tribute to the classic monsters and horror films.
