So I've been using this awesome video that Carmen posted about a month ago, but I can NOT seem to figure out how to change someone's hair color to a NORMAL color, ie a blond to a brunette to a REAL redhead etc. Any help?

Hey!

The way I do it is to open your image and create a new layer (transparent). Set that layer mode to 'Colour' and then paint on it with the paintbrush, experimenting with different colours until you get what you want. It works for eyes too.

Here's a thing I just did quickly in GIMP to show you how effective it is at creating realistic colours:

If you can tell which is the original straight away then... Well, I thought it worked a lot better than I thought it would - and damn, I wish my hair was that colour. Lol.

Oooh, I like that. Do you have to select anything so that it doesn't color skin and everything too?

What I do is just try to keep within the lines on a new layer and then I'll zoom in when most of it is coloured and I'll choose the fuzzy brush to go around the edges of the hair, and I'll erase the little bits of colour that have sneaked over onto other parts of the picture, like the skin and background. That's why doing it on a new layer is vital.

As the layer is set to colour, if the odd little bit does seep over and of the hair, then it won't be too noticable.

So I tried it out and it took a couple times, but I think it went okay.

I took Kellan Lutz from user posted image to user posted image

Darker colors to lighter colors is proving a little bit more difficult, but I managed to get Ashley Greene from user posted image to user posted image

I'm definitely going to have to practice this skill a LOT before I have it down better. Also, I'll have to start doing the eyebrows too. I was far too lazy to get into that tonight. And I'm realizing just how hard hair colorists have it! I tried a shade of red that looked fabulous on Ashley that made Kellan look like freaking Ronald McDonald!

Thanks for the tips! *hugs*

Oh, btw, which one WAS the original? I can't tell! My guess is the red one...

Lol, your guess would be right. happy.gif My mate said the blond which made me smile but yeah, its the red that's original. It helped having a really good pic to experiment on - I tried making Jensen's hair darker and well... let's just say - never again! lol.

It's looking great so far - yeah, finding the right colour is terrible. My friend wants to go blond... but so far she's listened to me when I've told her it wouldn't suit her.

*giggles* I said the red because of her eyebrows. It's very good, though. I had to study the two of them for quite some time before I could even make a guess!

In GIMP, you have the option of having the Layers Dialogue open so you can switch between which layer you want to edit and such. In this dialogue, there's a drop down menu which I think is called Mode. It has loads of things in it like Burn, Multiply, Dodge and Colour is near the bottom of the list (or on mine it is). You need to select the new transparent layer in this dialogue and choose colour in the drop down menu.

In the link to the screenshot below, the layers dialogue is the GIMP window on the right and mode should appear near the top of the window:
