INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT
Englund Institute for Sleep Research, Kingscross, Maryland
We look down at a young woman in her early 20’s KAREN FUSELI, lying on her back in bed, fast asleep. We move in closer to see her eyes dart about under her eyelids rapidly - she is in deep sleep.
FLASH CUT TO: The bedroom. Only it’s different, eerie. Colors and shadows take on a darker and more menacing hue. Karen’s eyes spring open! She looks up at the ceiling. And then across to the wall. They look like they are moving, almost as if something is alive inside the walls trying to break out. She tries to move but to her horror she remains transfixed on the bed, not even her scream becomes audible. Panicking, tears begin to roll down her cheeks and onto her pillow.
CUT TO : P.O.V. KAREN The corner of the room opposite her bed is draped in shadow, but now begins to move, as if forming into a definitive shape. Long dark arms, and long dark, scraggly hair seem to form.....
CLOSE UP : Karen’s eyes are fixed on the corner of the room. We hear a strange metallic sound (O.S.) as something comes closer. We can almost sense the internal struggle within Karen as she tries to jolt her body into action, but to no avail. She is going to die and there is nothing she can do to stop it.
FLASH CUT TO : INT. BEDROOM
The lights flash on and Karen wakes up screaming like a lunatic. The nurse who woke her tries desperately to calm her down
NURSE Karen!
KAREN (screaming) Don’t let it touch me!!!!!!!!!
The nurse holds her down as Karen trashes violently
NURSE It was just another bad dream!
Karen calms down slightly, but is still terrified
KAREN Don’t let it touch me.......
NURSE No one is going to touch you. You’re safe
Karen looks into the nurse’s eyes, her own full of fear
KAREN I couldn’t move
Karen bursts into tears as the nurse puts a comforting arm around her
CUT TO: INT. OBSERVATION ROOM From the back we see a doctor observing the scene through a two-way mirror. The room was just a study room in a hospital!
CLOSE UP on the doctor’s eyes. Worried
KAREN (O.S.) I couldn’t move.............
SUPERNATURAL - “Never Sleep Again”
EXT. WOODS. NIGHT
Hog Scald Hollow, Maryland
We PAN across a section of deserted woodland until we come to a small leafy clearing nestled between the trees. CLOSE UP of a HORSE, jet black, and happily munching on some grass. It looks up and then begins slowly chewing.
CLOSE UP on a pair of eyes watching from behind the bushes. Human, but with an almost inhuman intensity and focus. He watches the animal intently. A hunter perhaps? His eyes dart to the side momentarily, as we...
FLASH CUT TO: CLOSE UP on another pair of eyes. Unlike the previous pair this set of eyes look like they are a million miles away. PULL BACK to reveal they belong to SAM WINCHESTER. He sways unsteadily.
INT. MOTEL ROOM- FLASHBACK
P.O.V. SAM Dean picks up some cartridges off the bed and nosily CLICKS! Them into a shotgun
DEAN This thing’s dangerous but it ain’t too smart. If you ask me most of it’s brain has rotted away over the centuries along with the rest of it. Classic ambush situation should do it...
EXT. WOODS- NIGHT
Sam shakes his head. Concentrate! He tries to refocus on the clearing...
INT. MOTEL ROOM- FLASHBACK
P.O.V. SAM Dean smirks and he lifts his duffel bag of weapons off the bed.
DEAN Nah don’t worry Sam you’re too gangly to be the bait. Seems this thing has a taste for horsemeat.
Dean throws the bag over his shoulder and walks past Sam on his way out.
DEAN Come on Sammy, time to round us up some pork!
EXT. WOODS- NIGHT
Sam watches the horse in the clearing. It’s beginning to tramp and neigh in an agitated fashion.
CLOSE UP of Sam gripping the handle of his gun. Something is close.
Dean's eyes narrow as he readies himself.
CLOSE UP of the horse’s head as it’s nostrils flare, it strains, trying to break the leash keeping it tied to the tree.
We see the creature emerging from shadow and into the moonlight. A huge razorback pig, about the size of a small cow, very little remains of it, just rotted flesh clinging to stained bones. It makes an unearthly squealing noise as it ambles forward. This is the legendary “Bloody Bones”!
Dean glances across to Sam’s position. Showtime. The hog spies the horse and lunges forward, it leaps into the air, ready for the kill.
DEAN Sam!
Sam’s eyes blink rapidly, he gets to his feet but finds his vision suddenly blurred. He fires off a shot which misses the hog completely, instead blowing chunks out of a tree. CLOSE UP of the bark splintering into tiny pieces. Ignoring the horse for now the hog spins round to face Sam, it’s abnormally large tusks exposed in a cruel smile. Sam glances down and begins fumbling with his cartridges, desperately trying to reload his gun in time. CLOSE UP of the shells falling on the ground! The hog paws the ground and then sprints towards the youngest Winchester. Sensing the danger Dean jumps from his position and blasts the ghastly pig, hitting it smack in the rear.
DEAN Sam! Get away man!
The hog then charges at Dean, who hasn’t reloaded in time, hitting him smack in the chest and knocking him over.
CLOSE UP of their faces almost touching. Dean grimaces under the foul breath and dripping blood
DEAN Could do with a little help here Sam....
CLOSE UP on Sam as we see sweat running down his face.
CLOSE UP of Dean holding off the pig, he has pulled his back up gun from his pocket and aimed it towards the pigs face. BLAM! The pigs skull shatters into a thousand pieces showering Dean in blood.
DEAN (picking himself up) Ah! God damn........................
He glances around.
DEAN Sam?
He spots Sam slumped at the base of a tree. Dean looks like he is about to say something but instead sits down beside his brother
DEAN What happened back there man?
Sam shrugs it off...
SAM Nothing.
DEAN Dude, look at you. You’re dead on your feet. You can’t go on like this, I’ve been trying to get you to see someone about this for weeks now
SAM Dean I’m -
DEAN You’re not fine. Look you’re the smartest guy I know (beat) Granted I don’t know that many people that well - But this? Tired, sloppy, ignoring an obvious problem? That’s not like you man.
SAM I told you- I'm fine. Stop worrying about me.
Dean shakes his head frustrated.
DEAN If you won’t let someone help you sleep, sooner or later someone really is gonna get hurt!
Sam looks at Dean, narrows his eyes. The true impact of his words are now apparent. Dean takes a deep breath as he looks back towards the clearing
DEAN (smiling awkwardly) Zombie pigs huh?
SAM (smiles slightly) Yeah (beat) Good ol’ zombie pigs
We can sense a bubbling tension between the two.
DEAN Come on. These bones have to be taken apart and buried separately -
Dean gets up and extends Sam his hand
DEAN (CONT’D) And I’m not doing it on my own
INT. MOTEL ROOM. NIGHT
CLOSE UP of Dean’s face in bed. Fast asleep.
Sam sits at a desk, the small light the only illumination left in the room. He surfs the internet trying to put away everything that happened before... he can't. He looks back over towards Dean...
DEAN (V.O.) Sooner or later someone really is gonna get hurt!
Sam searches the internet for an institution that can help him... he clicks on the first article reading: “Englund Institute for Sleep Research specializing in unusual and extreme sleep disorders” another article below reads "Strange deaths at institute."
EXT. HOSPITAL. DAY
We see the Impala turn into the parking lot of the hospital. It passes a small sign which we pause on for a beat. CLOSE UP it says “The Englund Institute.”
INT. OFFICE
Sam sits across from a grey bearded doctor. The name plaque on the desk says he is Dr. J. Rhine PhD
DR. RHINE It’s nice to meet you Sam. What do you hope to gain from our visit here?
SAM I’d just like to see if I could get any help
DR. RHINE You have trouble sleeping?
SAM I guess, yeah
DR. RHINE You know troubled sleep isn’t that uncommon nowadays. You can take some small comfort in knowing you are far from alone. With todays lifestyle people don't just take the time out to relax
Sam smiles weakly. It is small comfort indeed. Dr Rhine begins jotting notes.
DR. RHINE I’m just going to ask you some general questions so that we might identify your problems and after we do that, we can begin talking about some possible treatments. That ok?
SAM (nods) Sure
DR. RHINE Do you exercise alot before bed?
SAM Uh............I wouldn’t really...sometimes maybe?
DR. RHINE But not as a general rule?
SAM Uh, no
DR. RHINE Do you smoke, drink alot of tea or coffee before bed?
Sam shakes his head
DR. RHINE Drink?
SAM (smiling slightly) No
DR. RHINE Do you suffer alot of stress at work?
Sam breaks out into a nervous laugh
SAM Uh...........you might say that
DR. RHINE What do you do Sam?
SAM I work with my brother, it’s a family business you might say (beat) Long hours
DR. RHINE Your brother huh? (smiles) Working with relations can be stressful, especially working irregular hours can disrupt your sleep patterns. You filled in your form that this insomnia only began a couple of months ago?
SAM That’s right
DR. RHINE Any incident in particular you think may have triggered it?
Sam checks himself, he closes his eyes- we can see that he is stressed out about something. He pushes the memories away... breathes out heavily and then opens his eyes.
SAM No.
DR. RHINE What made you decide to visit us now?
SAM Something happened at work. Um, with the job we do, you kinda have to have your wits about you. I guess I screwed up and my brother got hurt...
DR. RHINE I’m sure it wasn’t your fault -
SAM (forcefully) It was. I need help.
DR. RHINE We try our best. What we do here is very unique. We are both a treatment and a research facility. Of course everything is voluntary, nobody is committed, and patients are free to come and go as they please. Some have checked themselves in to be under 24 hour observation
Sam becomes curious
SAM Why is that?
DR. RHINE We treat alot of disorders here. Apart from insomnia and para-somnia we also specialize in more extreme conditions such as sleep paralysis and night terrors
SAM Night terrors...........
DR. RHINE That’s a general name for what we call pavor nocturnus. A condition in slow-wave sleep in which the patient is subjected to nightmares from which they can never fully wake from. It’s not a bon-afide nightmare as such as it doesn’t occur during REM, but if you’ve ever tried waking someone from a night terror - (beat) let me assure you it’s pretty terrifying
SAM And you have people suffering from night terrors here?
INT. CORRIDOR
Dean walks down the corridor idly watching the nurses and staff go about their daily routine. He comes to a door. It says “Room 2C”. Dean peers inside
DR. RHINE (O.S.) Oh yes. They reside on the second floor
INT. ROOM 2C
Dean walks in and sees a girl sitting on her bed staring out the window her back is turned to us.
DEAN (friendly) Hi there
DR. RHINE (O.S.) Some show extreme fear of the dark like a common childhood phobia that they never grew out of, or has been rekindled through some emotional event in their lives
Dean glances at the wall CLOSE UP of hand drawn pictures on the wall - just meaningless dashes of black paint and other shapeless forms. Dean moves closer and notices that her bedside light is on, despite it being the middle of the day and very bright
DEAN I’m just a visitor. My name’s Dean (beat) I like your pictures. You draw them yourself?
He peers around to see her face. She is pretty, but emotionless, just staring out the window. Dean frowns and goes to turn off the light. CLOSE UP of his arm being grabbed by the girl! She stares at him, the message is clear - don’t turn off the light!
DR. RHINE (O.S.) Whatever the real reason it’s clear these people genuinely believe there is something hiding in the dark that comes at night.....
Dean slowly backs away from the girl
INT. OFFICE
CLOSE UP of Dr. Rhine’s face
DR. RHINE But pavor nocturnus is nothing compared to some of the other things we have seen in here.........
INT. CORRIDOR
Dean and Sam meet up
DEAN How’d it go with Dr. Sauss? Think he can patch you up?
SAM I think so.
We TRACK boys as they begin walking down the corridor
SAM You know it’s funny...
DEAN What is?
SAM This stuff? It’s pretty fascinating Dean
DEAN That is funny
SAM No really. I mean things that hunters like us have been trying to track for centuries, most have a rational explanation
DEAN I thought that was common knowledge Sam
SAM I know but it’s the explanations themselves that are so interesting
DEAN If you say so. Anyway I thought you were a law student not a med student?
Sam shrugs
SAM Just food for thought you know
Dean and Sam pass by room 2C, Dean glances in at the girl he seen earlier. CLOSE UP of the girl looking out the window
DEAN (O.S.) Well don’t gorge yourself. Remember there are still things out there that are very real.
The bedside light flickers, causing the girl to glance at it nervously
DEAN (O.S.) CONT’D Some people have a right to be afraid
INT. MOTEL ROOM. NIGHT
The motel room window is slightly ajar. A slight breeze rustles the thin curtain as we...
DISSOLVE TO: EXT. WOODS. NIGHT
CLOSE UP of some brushes and undergrowth rustling, seemingly in the same breeze.
DEAN (O.S.) Sam!
Sam rushes through the undergrowth. Desperate. Lost.
DEAN (O.S.) Sam! Aghhhh!!!
SAM Dean!
Sam stumbles into a clearing
SAM Oh no....
He sees Dean slumped against the base of a tree, his clothes covered in blood. He is clutching his side in obvious pain
DEAN I needed you Sam...
Sam rushes to Dean’s side and places his hands over the wounds trying to stem the blood flow
SAM Try not to talk
DEAN Its bad Sam
Sam puts on his bravest face
SAM (smiling) It’s nothing, just a flesh wound. You always loved complaining as much as you loved hunting!
DEAN Where were you Sam? I needed you...
CLOSE UP on Sam’s face, distressed
DEAN (O.S.) I needed you, and you weren’t there.....
Dean’s head slumps onto his chest. Sam pulls him close, fighting back the tears. We see an aerial shot looking DOWN on Sam holding his brother at the bottom of the tree, we move UPWARDS, FADING OUT
SAM (O.S.) Somebody! (beat) Help me!!!!!!!!!!
INT. MOTEL ROOM
Sam’s eyes flash open. Sweat is running in torrents down his face. He stares up at the ceiling, panic in his eyes as he finds himself unable to move! We can almost sense him struggling, trying to snap out of it but to no avail. We hear the faint sound of scraping metal (O.S.)
CLOSE UP of Sam’s eyes as we see him looking at something off screen in the darkness. He screws his eyes shut tight in terror.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR. DAY
Sam walks down the second floor corridor. He sees coroner’s officials removing a body draped in a white sheet from a room - 2C, it‘s the same room Dean visited yesterday. Sam walks briskly over, curious.
SAM What’s going on? What happened?
CORONER Your guess is as good as mine
SAM She died in her sleep?
CORONER Looks that way, but there’s some other stuff I - (beat) - can’t really talk about
He catches hold of the trolley and with the attendants begins to wheel it out
CORONER (CONT’D) Excuse me
Sam looks on concerned as they file past him. He peers back into her room. CLOSE UP of the bedside light. It’s not on.
INT. DR RHINE’S OFFICE
A slight knock and the door creaks open. Sam enters. Dr Rhine looks up from his desk, slightly surprised
DR RHINE Sam (beat) This isn’t a good time
SAM I’m sorry I just wanted to ask what -
DR RHINE (finishing off Sam’s question) Happened to Molly? (sighs) Wish I knew. Seems like she just passed away in her sleep
Sam takes a seat, leans forward and narrows his eyes.
SAM Just like that?
Dr. Rhine’s looks at Sam curious and caught off guard.
DR RHINE We won’t know for sure until the autopsy...
SAM You said the second floor housed the night terrors
DR RHINE That’s right. It’s also where we kept the subjects who suffered from sleep paralysis
SAM Sleep paralysis? You mean Old Hag?
DR RHINE That’s one of it’s many names yes
Dr. Rhine gets up to show Sam the door
DR RHINE I’m sorry Sam but you’ll have to excuse me (beat) I’m very busy
Sam nods. Thinking.
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam has his mobile in his hands. He phones Dean
CUT TO: INT. MOTEL ROOM
Dean is sitting on the side of his bed sharpening a hunting knife. He picks up his phone
DEAN What’s up?
INT. CORRIDOR
SAM Dean! It’s here! It’s -
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN Woah Sammy slow down. What’s where?
SAM (O.S.) A mara...
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam collects his thoughts somewhat
SAM I’m here at the hospital. A girl died here last night. She was suffering from sleep paralysis
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN Sleep what? So she had bad dreams Sammy, what makes you think it’s a mara?
INT. CORRIDOR
SAM There’s something weird going on here Dean. Everyone’s scared and the doctor -
INT. MOTEL ROOM
SAM (O.S.) CONT’D I think he knows something
DEAN Doesn’t sound like much Sam. You know what I think?
INT. CORRIDOR
SAM What?
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN I think you need to let him help you so you can get some sleep
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam rubs his temple
SAM Can you at least humor me? For a second?
INT. MOTEL ROOM
Dean sighs
DEAN (beat) Ok Sam. Sit tight
REVERSE ANGLE We see Dean from the back sitting on the bed. The TV is on in front of him showing a re-run of Baywatch. The girls are running / bouncing down the beach in that classic opening sequence. Dean grudgingly reaches for the remote.
DEAN Sorry Carmen. Duty calls
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam hangs up the phone and puts it in his pocket. He glances around. His eyes catch a glimpse of a young woman looking back a him. Sam follows curiously, rounding the corner he sees nothing
INT. DR RHINE’S OFFICE
The lights are turned down low, the desk in slight disarray. Dr Rhine sits in his chair, his clothes ruffled like he’s had the mother of bad days. He is listening to a tape recorder
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Why are you here Molly? What do you think is wrong with you?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) I don’t know
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Do you have bad dreams?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) Yes
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Would you like to tell me about them?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) I’m scared.....
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) There’s nothing to be afraid of. Not now. You want to get better don’t you?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) Yes
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Well then. Don’t be afraid
MOLLY (ON TAPE) They keeping telling me it’s something normal and not to be afraid. They say it happens when your brain wakes up before your body, which is why I can’t move, or something
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) But you think there is more?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) It feels so real. Like there is someone watching me. In the room with me
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Can you see them?
MOLLY (ON TAPE) Sometimes, but not clearly. Most of the time you just feel it
DR RHINE (ON TAPE) Can you describe them?
Molly pauses before speaking again. Her voice cagey
MOLLY (ON TAPE) I think it’s a woman
Dr. Rhine replays that last sentence CLOSE UP of his face. Fearful
MOLLY (O.S.) I think it’s a woman........
INT. CORRIDOR.
Sam continues down the shiny floored corridor, rounding a corner
SAM Hello?
INT. PRIVATE ROOM
We see KAREN talking to a nervous looking boy of around 14, his name is ADRIAN. He is understandably upset about what happened to his friend Molly
ADRIAN She’s gonna get us too, isn’t she?
KAREN Of course not
ADRIAN You don’t know that!
KAREN Molly was afraid. That’s what killed her. We’ll be ok. Dr. Rhine says we just need to control our fears, that there’s nothing to be afraid of
ADIAN But there is (beat) And I’m scared
Kate is about to speak but is interrupted by a voice behind her
VOICE (O.S.) Scared of what?
Karen turns around. PAN UP : It’s Sam standing in the doorway
CUT TO : MOMENTS LATER
ADRIAN She comes to me at night. When I sleep. Sometimes she sits on my bed, other times she stands in the dark, like she’s waiting
SAM What’s she waiting for?
Adrian pauses for a beat. It’s hard to actually put into words how he feels
ADRIAN I think she’s waiting for me to die....
SAM Is it someone you know? Do you recognise her?
KAREN (interjecting) No (beat) She doesn’t have a face
Pause on Sam’s face for a beat. His expression one of puzzlement. BEEP! BEEP! Sam’s phone breaks the tension
SAM Sorry, I’ll be right back
He steps out into the corridor
INT. CORRIDOR
SAM Hey, what you find?
INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY.
Dean is standing by the Coke machine, shifting through change with his mobile to his ear
DEAN First things first I had a long chat with the butcher down at the pathlogy lab. Charming guy
SAM And?
DEAN The girl’s name was Molly Sugden and she would be 17 in a month’s time. Apparently the guys had a hard time getting her out of her room. She was frozen stiff
SAM So she was dead for some time obviously? I mean rigor mortis -
DEAN (CONT’D) That’s the funny thing Sam. According to the report she was checked in on at 11: 30 p.m. An orderly walking by thought he heard gasping and checked in again only to find her dead. This was about 12:30 a.m. She was already in that state
SAM Only an hour later? I’ve never heard of rigor mortis setting in that fast
DEAN Oh I know. I got the full lecture. Apparently it takes four hours on average, I also got an earful about the chemical mumbo jumbo that causes it. Man really loves his job. A bit too much. He doesn’t believe it’s proper rigor mortis either
SAM Why?
DEAN Again with the chemical mumbo jumbo. I’m not gonna pretend to know. Basically it looks as if she was paralysed and it still hasn’t worn off
SAM Wow
DEAN You’re telling me. I also think you might be right about Dr. Rhine. Seems there was a few incidents here a couple of years back but no formal charges were ever made.
SAM How’d you get that info?
DEAN Long story
Dean glances around. We TRACK an extremely plump looking nurse walking by. She gives Dean a wink
NURSE See ya around Mr. LaBerge!
Dean smiles awkwardly
DEAN Not if I see you first Wanda! (under his breath) Like that’d be hard
Sam hears this over the phone
INT. CORRIDOR
SAM Long story huh?
INT. LOBBY
DEAN Not so much long as... (beat) Wide
He slides money into the machine
DEAN Listen I’ll talk to you soon. I gotta go
SAM (O.S.) Ok
Dean stares at the Coke machine
DEAN Man I could do with something stronger
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam snaps his phone shut
INT. ROOM
Sam steps back inside to Adrian and Karen
KAREN You don’t believe us do you?
SAM You’d be surprised
KAREN No one believes us. Why do you think we’re here?
ADRIAN My parents put me in here because I’m an embarrassment
Adrian’s voice swells with emotion
ADRIAN (CONT’D) They don’t care about me
SAM I wouldn’t say that. They must care about you if they want you to get better (beat) Right?
ADRIAN I guess
Adrian starts to cry softly
ADRIAN (CONT’D) I just wish I could go home....
Karen puts her arm around him
KAREN It’s ok
ADRIAN Why can’t she leave us alone?
Karen looks at Sam
KAREN You have to help us
SAM How?
INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY. LATER
Dean and Sam are sitting at a table.
DEAN Alright so get this. Nine years ago Dr. Rhine holds an in depth study into sleep paralysis. All completely voluntary of course. The study was brought to a halt when a young girl died. Her name was Crissy Woods
SAM What’d she die off?
DEAN No one really knows but speculation had it she died of an accidental overdose. Seemingly the good doc had been experimenting with a new drug
Dean hands Sam some photos CLOSE UP of them in Sam’s hand. In one we see a teenage girl lying dead on her bed, her eyes open in terror.
DEAN (CONT’D) Nothing was ever proved of course
SAM And now that the study has been reopened...
DEAN It’s starting again
SAM Do you think it’s her?
DEAN Maybe
SAM Then why not target the doctor if he was responsible for her death?
DEAN I don’t know. Some spirits don’t know anything but rage. Alot of times it’s misplaced. I am coming round to your idea of her being the mara though
SAM Good. That’s why I’m staying
DEAN You’re what?!
SAM I have to stay and find out what’s goin on here
Dean shoots Sam a what the hell look. Sam leans in closer, his best “I know what I’m doing face” on.
SAM Some of these patients are just kids Dean
DEAN So what’s your plan? You’re just gonna sit up with them all night and watch them sleep?
Sam glances around, unsure of what to say.
DEAN You gotta be kiddin’ Sam! Look it didn’t work in Nightmare on Elm Street and it’s not gonna work here
SAM I need you out there to get to the bottom of this Dean. Find out all you can about this Crissy Woods girl, maybe she had a violent past or maybe there’s some connection to the victim
Sam gets up to leave, Dean sits there, slightly shocked
DEAN So that’s it then?
SAM You told me to get some help. (beat) I’m help
Dean watches Sam walk off
DEAN Enjoy your sleep over....
INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT
We FOCUS on Adrian as he sleeps. He tosses and turns, looking uncomfortable. We continue to PAN across until we stop at a figure draped in shadow sitting on a chair, watching. It leans forward, we CLOSE UP on Sam’s face as it is illuminated by moonlight. He looks at Adrian, concerned.
CUT TO: LATER
CLOSE UP of a clock on the wall. It’s now 3 a.m.
CUT TO : Sam, fighting to stay awake, his eyelids heavy as he begins to dose off.
CUT TO: LATER
CLOSE UP : of the clock. It’s now 4 a.m. CAMERA PANS DOWNWARDS to Adrian asleep in bed. He mumbles something in his sleep.
CLOSE UP of the closed door. A slight mist begins to pour in through the keyhole.
Adrian lyes in bed.
VOICE (O.S.) (creepy) Adrian........
Adrian’s eyes flash open!
VOICE (creepy) Adrian
Adrian is unable to move, his eyes dart across to Sam, asleep in the chair. We can see the panic in Adrian’s eyes as he lies helpless, he opens his mouth to scream SAM! SAM! But nothing comes out!
VOICE (creepy) Adrian...
CLOSE UP of Adrian’s face as a shadow descends upon it.
CUT TO : LATER
Sam awakes with a start. He glances up at the cock. 4 a.m. He rubs his eyes groggily and looks across at Adrian. The kid is lying on his back, his eyelids closed, but his eyes underneath are darting rapidly - he is dreaming. Sam gets up and walks across to check on him. ANGLE DOWN as Adrian’s eyes flash open! The child lets out an unearthly gasps and then freezes.
SAM Adrian!
Sam begins shaking him
SAM Adrian! Wake up Adrian! (beat) Wake up!
He checks his neck for a pulse as the realisation dawns on him - It’s too late.

INT. ADRIAN’S ROOM. DAY
Dean gets to his feet after hunkering down. He runs the EMF over the keyhole.
DEAN Mara alright. There’s your point of entry. Bitch was probably on the Atkin’s to fit through that.
He turns around and sees Sam sitting on Adrian’s bed.
DEAN Hey, you ok?
Sam is lost..
DEAN Sam?
SAM (snapping out of it) Huh?
DEAN I said, you alright?
SAM It’s not me I’m worried about Dean.
Just then Karen appears in the doorframe. She looks in the room.
SAM Karen.
KAREN Just seeing that empty bed you know...
SAM Yeah. (beat) I know.
Dean touches her on the arm.
DEAN I heard you were friends. (beat) I’m sorry.
Karen smiles weakly.
KAREN He was just a little boy who was scared of the dark. It’s not fair.....
Sam gets to his feet and walks over.
SAM We’re gonna stop this. I promise.
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam and Dean are walking briskly down the corridor.
DEAN All over the world people die in the sleep every night. It’s always chalked up to natural causes and envied it because they think its “peaceful.” (beat) Makes you wonder you know?
Sam isn’t listening.
SAM So how’s it going with the research? How soon can we salt and burn this thing?
DEAN That’s a negative Sam.
Sam stops in his tracks.
SAM What?!
DEAN There are virtually no records of Crissy Wood’s death, and definitely none of her burial. If she even was buried...
SAM That’s impossible. Have you tried -
DEAN (interjecting) I’ve tried everything Sam. Twice. Believe me.
Sam rubs his brow and sighs heavily.
SAM No.....
DEAN There’s only one thing left we can do.
SAM You’re not serious?
INT. KAREN’S ROOM. NIGHT
Karen sits on her bed, looking down at Dean and Sam setting up something on the floor.
KAREN You sure about this? I mean it’s pretty-
DEAN Weird? We get that alot.
Sam looks up.
SAM We think what’s causing this is a spirit.
KAREN An evil spirit? Like a ghost? So you gonna have a séance or something?
SAM Not exactly. A séance needs a medium. Here-
He pulls something from a box - a ouija board.
SAM (CONT’D) The board is the medium.
KAREN I haven’t seen one of those since I was a kid.
DEAN You use it?
Karen shakes her head.
KAREN They always creeped me out too much.
SAM Ouija’s can be pretty dangerous.
KAREN Why?
DEAN Well first of all you can’t see who you’re talking to.
KAREN So it could be anyone?
SAM Exactly.
He places the board on the floor.
SAM Still wanna play?
CUT TO : LATER
Sam, Dean and Karen are sitting on the floor around the ouija board.
KAREN So this girl died here?
DEAN In this very room, nine years ago.
KAREN Why? (beat) Is she doing this?
SAM Sometimes when a woman dies, she becomes more then just a ghost. Usually they are the spirits of the unbaptised or the unburied. They don’t pass on but instead return as a creature called a mara, or mare. It’s actually where we get the word “nightmare” from - they haunt people in their sleep.
Karen glances across at Dean.
KAREN This is real isn’t it?
DEAN Afraid so.
The dim light flickers overhead.
DEAN Looks like we have company.
SAM Is this true? Are you there?
CLOSE UP of the board, with everybody’s hands on the planchette. It circles the board in a rhythmic fashion before shooting off and settling on “yes”. Karen lets out a nervously excited gasp.
KAREN Oh my god.
SAM Are you Crissy Woods?
CLOSE UP of the board, the planchette circles again, before stopping at “yes.”
KAREN How do we know it’s her? It could be lying.
The planchette begins spinning erratically around the board.
DEAN I think you just made her mad.
SAM When did you die?
The planchette settles on “9”
SAM Are you responsible for Molly and Adrian’s deaths?
The planchette again begins to spin around erratically.
SAM Tell us the truth Crissy!
The planchette eventually settles on “no.”
KAREN Well if she didn’t do it, who did?
The planchette begins to spell words, Sam says them out loud.
SAM I. T.
DEAN “It”? (beat) What’s it?
SAM The same thing that killed you?
The planchette settles on “yes.”
SAM What’s “it” Crissy?
The planchette begins the spin around the board wildly, Karen looks afraid.
SAM Crissy, what’s it?
It begins spelling again.
SAM C. H. A. I. N. S
DEAN What the hell?
KAREN What has chains?
DEAN (confused) I don’t know.
SAM Crissy you’re not making any sense.
DEAN She’s angry Sam.
SAM Damn it Crissy!
DEAN Sam you’re just making her mad.
SAM We need to know Dean!
Sam looks down at the board again.
SAM Tell us what we need to know Crissy! Tell us who killed you!
The planchette is now spinning around the board, it looks almost painful to be taking part in this.
DEAN Sam calm down your not helping!
Sam glares at Dean.
SAM You’re not helping!
Karen looks deep at Sam, concerned.
KAREN Sam....
Sam pulls back from the board violently as it rockets out of their grasp, smashing against the wall! Sam seems shaken, as Dean looks at his brother, almost shocked.
SAM I’m sorry I -
He gets up slowly, consumed in his own thoughts.
SAM I just wanted some answers. (beat) That’s all.
INT. DR RHINE’S OFFICE. NIGHT
Dr Rhine sips his coffee and tries to focus on the papers in front of him. It’s no use and he finds himself fighting a yawn.
VOICE (O.S.) (creepy) Joseph.
Dr. Rhine spins around but sees nothing. His window is slightly ajar and a slight breeze ruffles the pages on his desk. He tidies them up. CLOSE UP of his desk light as it flickers CUT TO; Dr Rhine’s face. Worried, as if he was afraid this would happen. He tries to get up from his chair but finds he cant. He can’t move at all. The room dims.
VOICE (creepy) Joseph....
CLOSE UP: Of his wrists on the arm rests. We hear a slight metallic noise, as we see his skin redden and tighten, almost as if being wrapped in invisible chains.
CLOSE UP of his neck as we see a similar manifestation appear around his throat. He tries to gasp.
INT. CORRIDOR
Sam rests against the wall and stares upwards. His eyes narrow as he sees a single light flicker off and back on, followed by the next. They are flickering off in sequence, and they are making their way down the corridor. Curious he follows them.
CUT TO: LATER
Sam rounds the corner and sees the lights dim in Dr. Rhine’s office. He moves inside.
INT. DR RHINE’S OFFICE
P.O.V. SAM We see the doctor sitting in his chair, his eyes open and fixed on Sam.
P.O.V NORMAL In an instant Sam realizes what is going on and rushes forward.
SAM No! Not again!
CUT TO : INT. CORRIDOR
Sam pokes his head out of Dr. Rhine’s office
SAM Dean!
INT. DR RHINE’S OFFICE
Dr. Rhine sits at his desk, his head in his hands, visibly shaken. Dean places a cup of coffee in front of him.
DR RHINE Thank you. (looking up) All of you.
Sam sits down opposite him.
DEAN Ready to start talking doc?
Dr. RHINE I don’t know what you mean.
SAM You can start by explaining why you let three people die.
Dr. Rhine looks at Sam, shocked.
Dr. RHINE I didn’t let anyone die.
DEAN Doc, the act is old. We know you had something to do with the deaths here.
Karen steps forward.
KAREN Poor Molly, and Adrian? That girl nine years ago? (beat) You knew all along?
Dr. RHINE You can’t.... (beat) You don’t know!
SAM You think your crazy if you admit it. That somehow if you stay in your little scientific bubble of B.S. explanations you can make it go away.
Sam leans in, prepared to let fly at the doctor.
SAM Well it won’t, and no matter what you think it’s real. It won’t stop. (beat) Not even after it’s killed you.
Sam pulls away, leaving a quivering Dr. Rhine staring up at the group.
Dr. RHINE You think I don’t know how you feel. That I don’t know what it’s like to be afraid?
Dr. Rhine lets out a heavy sigh, and rubs his glasses. He puts them back on.
Dr. RHINE When I was five it came. I was an only child living at home with my mother. My father fought in the war, he was stationed somewhere in the far east, and I missed him. My biggest fear was that he’d never come home. I’d have nightmares every night, they were all strangely similar. I would dream about my father’s funeral. (beat) Then I would see her. She would come to me in my dreams. I can’t remember ever actually seeing her but I still have an image of her in my mind. Isn’t that strange? I hated seeing her, she terrified me to the point where I couldn’t move, not a muscle. When I would wake up and switch on the lights it was the greatest relief I’ve ever felt because I knew that if I couldn’t I might never wake up again. (beat) She stopped visiting me when my father died. I remember the day he was flown home and I remember his funeral - exactly how it was in my dream. I learned from that experience the importance of facing your fears in order to conquer them.
CLOSE UP of Sam’s face, taking all this in.
DR RHINE Anyway that’s why I started this research. I thought I could help other people through their fears.
DEAN Only something went wrong didn’t it?
Dr. RHINE The principal was to face your fear in order to defeat it. I developed a new medication to induce nightmares in the patient, belladonna derivatives were added to their sleeping pills.
SAM Belladonna? You mean deadly nightshade?
Dr. RHINE That’s right. It was used in witchcraft for centuries to induce visions.
SAM (incredulous) It’s also poisonous!
Dr. RHINE Not in the right amount! There was an accident nine years ago. A girl died. (beat) But this time I swore I had perfected it!
SAM Sounded like it worked a little too well. The patients were afraid alright, only they didn’t know how to face their fears. You let something loose and you couldn’t control it.
Dr. RHINE I withdrew the medication but the nightmares wouldn’t stop. She had grown too powerful.
DEAN Which leads us back to the big question. Just what the hell is this thing?
Dr. Rhine lifts a book from under a large pile of papers. He opens it.
Dr. RHINE A couple of years back I went to Japan to learn a bit more about my father and how he died. I discovered more than I bargained for when I came across this.
CLOSE UP of a page. It shows a ghostly woman, her face obscured by long black hair, around her body are chains and shackles.
Dr. RHINE It’s the woman from my nightmares. In Japanese folklore she is called the kanashibari. Her name is derived from the helpless sensation the victim feels while being attacked.
Dr. Rhine looks up from the book.
Dr. RHINE It means “bound in chains.”
Karen edges forward and looks at the illustration. CLOSE UP of the Kanashibari reflected in her eye’s. Immediately Karen faints.
SAM Karen!
Dean prevents Karen from hitting the floor. The men gather round.
DEAN What’s wrong with her?
Dr. RHINE I don’t know. Looks like she just passed out.
Dr. Rhine shines his pencil light into her eyes.
Dr. RHINE If I didn’t know better I’d say she’s already in REM sleep.
SAM That’s impossible!
Dr. RHINE Look for yourself.
Dr. Rhine lets the eyelid close. Karen’s eyes can be seen darting rapidly.
Dr. RHINE I don’t believe in impossible anymore.
DEAN Wait. That means she’s vulnerable.
Sam is on his knees trying desperately to rouse Karen.
SAM Karen! Wake up Karen!
He begins to shake her.
SAM Come on Karen..........
DEAN It's no good.
Sam looks up at Dr. Rhine.
SAM (to Dr. Rhine) How do we kill this thing?
CUT TO : LATER
Sam, Dean and Dr. Rhine are gathered around the book.
Dr. RHINE You see here. (points) In traditional Japanese stories, the hair plays a predominant part. Why I don’t know. They say if you can burn the hair, you can destroy the spirit.
DEAN Kind of like Samson’s evil twin sister.
SAM Then that’s what we gotta do.
Dr. RHINE How do you know it will work? I mean these are all just stories.
Sam looks back at Karen, asleep on the doctor’s couch.
SAM We don’t. But we also don’t have alot of options.
DEAN How do we summon this thing, as far we I can tell it only comes while you’re sleeping.
SAM Dr. Rhine, what sedation do you have?
Dr. RHINE I can give you nitrazepam, it’s the strongest thing I have.
SAM Good.
DEAN Sam what are you doing?
SAM I have to go under to get this thing Dean. It’s Karen’s only chance.
DEAN It’s too dangerous. There has to be another way, something we missed.
Dr. RHINE Dean might be right Sam. You realize that the kanashibari can only be destroyed in the waking world? Anything used against it while dreaming would be useless.
SAM So I have to pull it out of my dream?
Dr. RHINE Essentially, yes.
DEAN It’s a suicide mission man, you can’t do this! There’s no way -
SAM There’s always a way.
DEAN And if there’s not?
Sam pauses for a beat.
SAM I guess going in your sleep ain’t bad.
Dean looks shocked, he doesn’t believe Sam really meant that, did he?
DEAN Sam.....
Sam turns to Dr. Rhine.
SAM I’m ready.

CUT TO : LATER
Sam is sitting on the doctors chair. His eyes closed as he falls into a deep sleep.
DEAN I don’t like this.
Dr. RHINE He’ll be fine. Sam knows what he’s doing.
DEAN (worried) Yeah (beat) That’s what I’m afraid off......
CLOSE UP of Sam’s face as we...
DISSOLVE TO : INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR. NIGHT- DREAM WORLD
Sam looks around. The place looks different, like a nightmarish version of reality. The hospital seems deserted. His footsteps echo down the lonesome corridors.
SAM Hello?
He passes by Adrian’s room and glances inside. The lights flicker off. In a flash of light Sam thinks he can see Adrian sitting up in bed, but just as quick he is gone.
SAM Adrian? Are you here?
He hears a child’s laughter coming from further down the corridor and the patter of some feet running away.
SAM Hey! Who’s there?
He hears a voice behind him.
ADRIAN Sam....
He spins around. Adrian is looking at him. The kid has terrible bruising around his neck and wrists. His eyes are almost bulging red.
SAM Adrian... (beat) What happened to you?
ADRIAN She’s coming for you Sam.
Adrian points down the corridor.
ADRIAN She’s here..........
Sam turns around. The corridor seems to extend and stretch in a dreamlike fashion. One by one the lights overhead switch off, the darkness advances down the corridor towards him.
SAM No!
Sam begins running back down the corridor. The darkness though, is quicker and soon envelopes him.
INT. Dr. RHINE’S OFFICE
Sam begins twitching, obviously things aren’t going well. Dean has been watching Sam intently all this time
DEAN What’s wrong with him?
Dr. RHINE He’s dreaming.
DEAN That’s no dream. That’s a nightmare. I’m waking him up.
Dean advances towards Sam. He is stopped by Dr. Rhine.
Dr. RHINE No!
DEAN (threateningly) Le go of me doc.....
Dr. RHINE You can’t wake him up now! You have to give him a chance! If we pull him out now we may never get another shot!
Dean looks back towards Sam, concerned.
INT. Dr. RHINE’S OFFICE- DREAM WORLD
Sam wakes with a start and looks around. No one is here. He sighs heavily and goes to get up off the chair. He finds himself transfixed and unable to move. The desk lamp flickers and the room dims. He glances down under the desk, a large mass of black hair begins to rise up from the shadows. The sound of clanking chains can be heard followed by a metallic scraping. Long nailed, bony hands appear and begin to make their way up Sam’s leg. The Kanashibari climbs her way slowly up a helpless Sam. CLOSE UP of the panic in his eyes as the Kanashibari comes face to face! Long strands as black hair fall onto Sam’s face.
FLASH CUT TO:
INT. Dr. RHINE’S OFFICE
Sam wakes with a start. Dean is shaking him
SAM Dean... (beat) Thank god Where am I?
DEAN Still in Dr. Rhine’s office.
Sam glances around, fearful.
SAM How do I know this is real? (beat) How do I know you are real?
DEAN Dude what are you talking about?
Sam looks down at his hands. He raises them slowly to his head. CLOSE UP in his hands are strands of long black hair!
SAM It worked.
Sam looks at Dean, amazed.
SAM She’s here......
Dr. RHINE (O.S.) Oh god!
CLOSE UP of Dr. Rhine’s face. Frozen in fear, we PAN across following his gaze. The wall behind where Karen is sleeping begins to pulse and move. A figure forms and steps out from the wall - the Kanashibari! Everyone remains rooted to the spot unable to move as the Kanashibari bears down on Karen. Sam tries to yell but no words will come out.
CLOSE UP of Karen’s throat as rusted chains slide their way around her neck, squeezing tightly. Karen’s eyes flash open as she gasps. The chains pull tighter and her eyes begin to redden with blood.
Sam watches on, horrified.
Dr. RHINE (V.O.) I learned from that experience the importance of facing your fears in order to conquer them.
Sam struggles, and managing to break the paralyzing hold, grabs a glass bottle of alcohol solvent from the desk and hurls it at the apparition. It breaks, dosing her in liquid. Shrieking she turns towards Sam who has produced a lighter. He flicks it open and throws it at the creature which instantly burst into flames. The Kanashibari lets out one last hideous wail before dissolving from reality. Karen splutters and coughs as Dr. Rhine races over and checks her pulse.
Dr. RHINE She’s ok!
Dean walks over to Sam.
DEAN You ok?
SAM Yeah. (beat) Yeah I think so.
KAREN (weakly) Where am I?
Dr. RHINE (smiling) You’re back.
DISSOLVE TO: EXT. CEMETERY. DAY
Sam and Karen are standing at a grave site.
KAREN It’s funny you know. I only knew him for a short space of time. It’s strange how attached to someone you can get
SAM Yeah...
KAREN (looking back at the grave) Poor little boy.
SAM I’m sure he’s in a better place. He has nothing to fear anymore I guess.
KAREN (lighthearted) You almost sound sure of that.
SAM (looking at Karen) Maybe I am.
Karen smiles and touches Sam on the arm.
KAREN Thanks Sam.
SAM For what?
KAREN For being there.
Karen walks off. Sam looks back the grave. CLOSE UP of the gravestone. It says “ADRIAN GARDNER. Beloved son and brother. Died October 19th 2007. Aged 12 years.”
SAM (O.S.) See ya on the other side Adrian
FLASH CUT TO: INT. MOTEL ROOM. NIGHT
Sam’s eyes flash open.
FEMALE VOICE (O.S.) See ya on the other side.....
CLOSE UP of Sam’s face, soaked in sweat.
SAM (sadly) Jess?
