I came across this really awesome tutorial on how to make your own GIMP brushes (for those of you out there who are creative enough to do such things): Make a GIMP brush. For cool backgrounds and unusual textures with cool coloring, I suggest Digital Blasphemy. Although you have to pay to get larger versions, you can get several HQ backgrounds from the free gallery, and there are plenty of thumbnail versions that still look good when resized.
