Chapter Two
Dani woke to the gentle calling of her name, followed by a soft kiss placed on her cheek. She opened her eyes slowly and looked over her shoulder and saw Dean, resting his chin on her arm.
“Morning.” He whispered.
She smiled and turned onto her back, pulling the sheets closer. Dean laid next to her and scooped her up into his left arm and she put her head over his heart. He gently stroked her arm as she tried to go back to sleep.
“Have you thought of names?” He asked.
She sighed deeply, wishing for sleep, but rose her head and looked at him.
“Yeah, a couple.”
“Like what?”
“Well, all I’ve thought of is girl names but, Krystal Rebecca, Brittany Anne,
Madison Sydney, and Amanda Marie.”
Dean thought about it for a moment and kissed Dani on the forehead. She looked
at him, confused for a second, then leaned in and kissed him.
“I like Madison Sydney.” He finally said. She smiled. “What?”
“That’s my favorite too.”
Sam walked into the bedroom and saw the entire contents of Laurie’s side of the closet on their bed. He pokes his head into the walk-in closet and saw Laurie standing in front of her side, hands on her hips, thinking.
“Honey, we’re only gonna be gone two weeks.” He said.
She jumped slightly at him suddenly talking to her.
“Yeah, I know. But you never know what the weather will be like.” She said,
reaching for a pair of pants high up. Sam walked in and got them off the hanger
for his extremely shorter wife and handed them to her. “Thank you.” She said.
She left the closet and walked back into the room.
“Gina says it’s gonna be nice.” Sam said.
“But you never know.” She said. She folded up the pair of pants and placed them
neatly in her suitcase on the floor.
Sam, who had already packed, walked up behind her and put his strong arms
around her waist and put his head on her shoulder.
“I love you.” He said in her ear. She dropped the shirt she was folding and turned
around, putting her arms around his neck. She reached up and kissed him.
“I love you too.” She said. She smiled and kissed him again before turning back
around to continue packing.
“Are you sure it’s ok with your parents to let the kids and the dogs stay there?”
He asked, helping.
“Yeah, mom and dad love when the kids visit.”
“Even the twins?”
“They don’t mind. They’re excited.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.”
Sam dropped a shirt into her suitcase.
“When are they picking them up?”
“Tonight.”
“And our plane takes off tomorrow morning?”
Laurie nodded, counting the shirts and pants now in her suitcase.
“I hope Dean will be ok.” Sam said, holding back his laughter.
“You are so mean to him.” She joked.
“It’s pretty funny, seeing Dean on a plane. He hums Metallica, did you know
that?” His mind wandered to after the car accident that had nearly helped take his
life. The ambulance driver had played Metallica as if on cue after Dean told him to
hum it. Sam had been so scared that night. He felt scared just thinking about it.
Of course, that could be because he had lost Dean. He blinked away the feeling of
tears
“I think you’ve told me that.” She said.
“What?” Sam asked, coming back to reality. “Oh, yeah, I probably have.”
Laurie looked at him suspiciously, but chose not to question his sudden change of
character. She walked into the bathroom to gather her toothbrush, toothpaste,
and several other toiletry items.
Sam sat down on the bed and sighed. How long would this last? The normal side
of their lives never last long. It never had. He had a bad feeling that this trip
would turn into something much more, but he shook the thought away.
It was just a dream, Sam. That’s all. Just a dream.Suddenly, the phone rang and he picked up the cordless and pressed TALK.
“Hello?” He said. “Hey, Dean.” Pause. “Um, ya, that might not be a bad idea. All of you do that.” Pause. “Hang on. Laurie, what time does our plane take off?”
“Nine thirty.”
“Nine thirty.” Sam said into the receiver. “I don’t know, Dean. Go online and find
out.” Pause. “Then get Dani or Kali to do it.” Pause. “Oh for god’s sake, Dean!
I’ll look it up and call you back. Bye.” He hung up the phone and walked over to
the laptop.
“What is it?” Laurie asked.
“Dean wants to know what the temperatures are gonna be there.”
“Why doesn’t he look them up?”
“He says he’s computer illiterate. Which may be true, but he’s not that computer
illiterate.”
Sam looked up the temperatures and called Dean back. Dean claimed Dani had
wanted to know, which was a lie Sam didn’t believe.
“Mommy, daddy.” Little Dean’s voice came from the doorway. Sam looked up and saw him with his teddy bear in one hand and his power ranger backpack in the other. “Me weady to go to gwandma’s house.”
“Really? Wow, Laurie, our little boy is growing up. He’s packed his stuff and everything.” Sam said, walking over to his son. He kneeled down and took his
backpack. “Let’s see what we have in here.” He unzipped the top and smiled at the assortment of toys inside. Laurie looked over his shoulder and giggled.
“Yeah, he sure is.”
“Hey, Dean. Whaddya say we go get some clothes together?” Sam asked.
“Ok.” Dean said. Sam zipped up the backpack and handed it to Dean.
“C’mon, little man.” He pushed the four year old toward his bedroom and left
Laurie to finish getting packed.
“Dean, are you almost ready? Don and Sandra are gonna pick up the kids any
second!” Kali called from her room.
“Yeah, twins are almost ready.” He called back.
“These set of twins are.” Dani said to him as Kali zipped up her suitcase. They
were ready for the following morning.
“And so are this set.” Dean said, walking into their room holding the fraternal
twins in his arms.
Dani and Kali each took one and played with them until they saw headlights pull in
across the street. They left the room, making Dean carry the babies’ small
suitcases.
“Hey Don.” Dean said behind the girls as they walked up.
“Dean!” Don cried. He walked up to Dean and shook his hand. “How have you
been?”
“I’ve been good. How about you?”
“Can’t complain. I’m retiring in two months.”
“Congrads. Sometimes I wish I could do that.” He said loud enough for Dani to
hear. She looked over and glared at him.
“Things are good between you and Dean, Dani?” Sandra asked in her kind voice.
“Very good.” Dani replied, bopping the baby boy in her arms.
“Are you gonna tell her?” Laurie asked, coming up behind her. She held out her
arms for the baby.
“I’m sure your mother doesn’t care that much, Laurie.” Dani said, handing her the
giggling boy.
“Tell me what?” Sandra asked, intrigued. Dani sighed and put her hands on her
pockets.
“I’m pregnant.”
“Oh!” Sandra nearly screamed. She began to smile as she hugged
Dani. “Congratulations honey!” She said. “Don, Don, did you hear that?”
Don rolled his eyes at his wife’s interruption.
“Yes, dear?”
“Dani’s pregnant!” She squealed. Don turned around and smiled at Dani. He
walked over and hugged her. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks.” She said, hugging him back. The man often reminded her of her own
father. His well built and strong body and his caring character towards those he
loved. It made her miss her dad, a feeling she never had any other time.
“So,” Sandra said, “have you and Dean picked out names?”
“We’ve thought of a couple. We both really like Madison Sydney, though.”
“Darling, it’s beautiful. Madison Sydney Winchester. It does have an nice ring,
doesn’t it?”
Kali looked at her sister, pretending to be hurt.
“Not Kali?”
“Or Laurie?” Laurie asked, imitating the act.
Dani opened her mouth in defense and turned to Laurie.
“Ok, I don’t see you thinking about naming your next kid Dani. Hell, I don’t even
see you thinking about more kids.” She turned to Kali. “And you, little miss ‘I
wanna name my kid ‘Alex’ that way it’ll fit if it’s a boy or a girl’, enough said.”
Kali, Sandra, and Laurie giggled at Dani’s defense. Dani shook her head in mock
shame.
“What if it’s a boy?” Sandra asked.
“We haven’t thought of boy names yet. We could name it ‘Alex’.” She said,
nudging Kali.
“Name’s taken, sis, sorry.” She said.
Dani laughed.
“Yeah, no boy names yet. We both really want girls.”
“Well, just because you want a girl doesn’t mean you’re gonna get it.” Sandra
said. “Look at Jim, Laurie’s little brother. He was going to be Janet because we
were hoping for a girl. And look what happened?”
“You thought Jim was a girl, mom?” Laurie asked.
“You know all those old wives tales about how to tell the gender of the baby? Well
I had the same things with you and Jim.”
“I’m so gonna tease him about that now.”
“No! He doesn’t know.” Sandra said.
“Sandra, we have to go.” Don said. Sandra nodded and stood up.
“It was so good talking with you girls.” She said, hugging Kali, then Dani. “You
take care of yourself, do you hear?” She said, looking Dani straight in the eye.
“I will, don’t worry.” She kissed Sandra on the cheek and she and Kali went to say
goodbye to Don.
“You will watch her, won’t you?” Sandra asked Laurie.
“Of course I will.” She said. “Babies my profession, mom. If anything goes
wrong with her, I will get her to the proper facilities.”
“Good. You be careful up there. Alaska can be very dangerous.”
“Yes, mother.” Laurie said, mocking annoyance.
“Goodbye, dear.” Sandra said, bringing her daughter in for a hug.
“Bye.” She said. She kissed her mother and then walked over to her father as
Sandra hugged Dean and Sam goodbye.
“Hey, you be good for grandma and grandpa, ok?” Laurie said to her son.
“Ok. I will.”
“Watch your sister.”
Dean nodded and hugged his mother.
“I love you.” She said.
“I wuv you too.” He kissed Laurie on the cheek and Laurie squeezed him tight.
“Come here, little man.” Dean said.
“Uncie Dean!” Dean cried.
“Be good and remember -.”
“Zeppwin wules.”
“That’s my boy.” Dean said. He kissed his nephew and put him on the ground so
he could run to Sam and Kali and Dani.
It was another ten minutes of goodbyes interrupted by small talk before the kids
were safely in the car and Don behind the wheel with Sandra in the passengers
side seat.
“Have fun.” Don said.
“We will, daddy.” Laurie said. She kissed him on the cheek and he put the van in
reverse.
“Be safe.” Sandra urged.
“We will, mom.” Laurie said, really getting annoyed at her mothers urgency.
“We love you.” She said. “All of you.”
Laurie nodded and hugged her.
“I love you too.”
They all waved as Sandra and Don pulled out of the driveway. Little Dean could
be seen waving until they turned the corner.
