This isn't really a fan fic, I'm writting a book and would love some feedback, still not too sure on the title either. If you see any typos please let me know, I'm not too good on the proof reading This is chapter 1. Chapter 1 – The Beginning of the End Oh crap! I arose with a startle from one of the deepest sleeps I’ve ever had, the one where you feel like you’ve actually only been asleep for five minutes and you didn’t dream at all. I can never get used to that stupid new alarm clock mum got me before I started the new school year, so she wouldn’t have to wake me up before she went to work. The horrible screeching sound, if it weren’t a present from mum, it would have been out the window by now. Oh that screeching, like an owl possessed, no wonder I wake up startled every damn day.
I got out of bed and got my uniform off the end of my bed, grabbed some underwear and headed for the shower. I lived in the weirdest house, I had the whole top floor to myself, It was one giant room, I did love it, I had a whole wall full of my books and a big window that faced out towards the ocean. Last Christmas mum finally got me a queen sized bed after I had asked for one for years. She was so sure I wanted it so I could have sex. What an awkward talk that was. “Mum, I just want it for the room, not to lose my virginity in.“ “Well may be now that is the case, but your only 17 and still at school, I mean you’re a young beautiful woman and boys will take advantage.” “Yes mum, that’s what will happen if a guy takes advantage of me, bring me back to my home”…. I rolled my eyes. “I have a massive room with one silly little bed, it looks stupid.” “Well I have to go to work, but I will think about it, I promise.” Well at least she gave me the bed for Christmas.
I walked down the spiral staircase in the middle of the room into the hallway of the house and headed down to the back of the house to the bathroom to have a shower. After I got out I wrapped a towel around me and then turned to look at myself in the mirror. I had shoulder length dark hair, green eyes, squarish face and full lips…. as my mum calls them. I never thought I was the most beautiful person, but I was all right, well I thought I was. I put on my blue and white checked uniform dress, which I made sure, was just above my knees. Horrible thing it is, I hate it, but have to wear it. Dried my hair and pulled it back into a low ponytail.
I walked out of the bathroom and across to the kitchen, mum had left a plate out on the dinning table with her usual note, Have fun at school, Love Mum. I screwed it up and put it in the bin. I loved mum, but that kind of stuff annoyed me. I had my raisin toast and coffee for breakfast, then walked back up the stairs and grabbed my school bag. I had been back at school for two weeks, so I already knew my classes and teachers. My favourite subjects are Art and Ancient History. I walked slowly down the stairs and looked at the clock and thought that I better leave so I could get a good park. I took my keys from the tray sitting on the hallstand at the front door and walked out to my Chevy. When I told mum I wanted a 1967 Chevrolet Impala she laughed at me. Then she saw in my face that I wasn’t joking. Thankfully I found a black one and mum paid for half for my 17th Birthday last June.
I love this car, I thought as I took off the cover, I want to keep it in the garage, but mum insists on hers being in there and seeing as she paid for half of mine and all of hers I didn’t argue the point. I put the cover in the boot and my school bag, closed it and then unlocked the front door and jumped in. I didn’t care she was a gas-guzzler; I didn’t drive anywhere much except to school, work and home again. Thank goodness it’s Monday and I didn’t have to work tonight. I had a pretty boring job of doing the mailing, filing and a few other officey things for mums work at a Real Estate office. Mum was a realtor she worked with rental properties in a small office of only two receptionists and another three relators.
I got to school and parked on the side of the school property as no one was allowed to park out the front and the car park was only for the teachers. I got out of the car and locked the door, then walked around to get my bag out of the boot of the car. “Hay Ruby,” “Hi Charles, hows it going?” I replied as I got my bag out and shut the boot behind me. “The old beat still running is it?” he said with a chuckle. “Of course she does” I replied with a smirk. Charles was in my year at school, we had all started our last year at High School, doing our Higher School Certificate. He thought he was so smug because his dad was a lawyer and his mum was a bank manager. For Christmas his parents got him a brand new BMW.
“I wouldn’t be caught dead in any car that was over ten years old” he continued in his own superior tone that no one could stand. “Hay listen Charles, I can see Em, I’ll see ya later ah?” I waved with a flick of my hand and turned to walk through the other gates to catch up with Emily who I had been a friend with since we started High School six years ago. “Hay Em, wait up!” I called. She turned around and looked at me,” “oh hi Rube, how was your weekend?” “Yeah not too bad, mum was bothering me about doing all my homework. You excited about Supernatural tonight?” “Oh yeah! How cool is it having the same name as a character on the show?” “Not really, although she is pretty kick arse.” We walked around the back of the school to where the year 12 area was. “Hay Ruby!” I heard someone call my name, I looked around to see the school captain Michael Thomas walking towards me. “Oh hay Mike”, I replied as I turned to meet him. “It’s your turn to do the monitoring of the lunch line today.” “Oh man” I noticed the high pitch in my voice, I forgot I was going to be given Monday’s. “If I knew this was going to be part of my duties I would never have put in to be a prefect.” “Yeah well them’s the breaks.” “I noticed you don’t do it.” This big bellowing laughter came from him “I’m the captain, I don’t do that,” “oh of course not, how silly of me.” I turned and rolled my eyes to Em and she laughed as went to sit at the table. We had one lesson then the second period was a free one. That annoyed me; I would have loved it to be first period so I could sleep in.
The bell went for the first period and we made our way to Maths, my least favourite subject. I turned my phone on silent then got my folder and calculator out. I hated this subject so much, and the teacher certainly didn’t make it any easier. Em and I sat towards the back in the middle row, Charles sat in front of us which was so irritating, he claimed that he knew everything, he generally didn’t so we got a kick out of that. Mr Townsend was our Maths teacher and he was on the stinky side. Once we finished Algebra I was so happy to get out of that class, it’s such a struggle to get through it, I don’t know how I’m going to go when it comes to exam time. Em and I walked back from the Maths building to the year 12 area near the library. Generally we go and sit in there to be out of the hot sun, but this morning wasn’t too bad and there was only about ten people who had a free period at the same time as us. There was this one guy who was really quiet and was sitting by himself, I think his name is Emmett, generally I see him hanging around with some other guy…. Not sure who he is. He seemed like a nice enough guy when I have had to talk to him. The guys have got it good when it comes to their uniform, white button up short sleeve shirt and black pants, in the winter they have to wear a tie and a long sleeve white shirt.
“Hay, your staring into space again Rube.” I wasn’t actually, I was staring at Emmett, which surprised me, but I wasn’t going to tell Em that. “Sorry, I was just worried about Maths.” “Oh you’ll be fine, I know you worry about it, but you always seem to go ok in exams, try not to stress about it. Plus you go really well in every other subject.” “Thanks a lot Em.” She always seemed to make me feel better about myself, I was so glad she was my best friend; we have had our ups and downs, a few fights through the years about stupid teenager crap. But she was always there for me when I needed her. “Hello Ruby” I heard from a male voice behind me. I turned in my seat to see Emmett standing behind me. I was totally shocked. “Hello Emmett, how are you?” “I’m pretty good today, see you in English.” “Ok”. He turned around and walked away. “That was weird”, Em said when I turned around in my seat. “Very”, I tried to work through was just happened.
We got through the rest of the day trouble free. Art was after recess, then Em went to science and I went to Modern History. Then we had lunch, now that we were seniors we could feel free to go across the road to the shops. We went and got some salad wraps then walked back to the school, I then went to do lunch duty. After lunch we both made our way to Ancient History, then after that to English. We got put into different classes because I was more advanced in English than she was. I walked to the back corner of the class and sat down in the seat next to the wall, after I had got my folder out and the schools copy of To Kill A Mocking Bird I looked up and saw Emmett was standing there holding the chair next to me. “Do you mind if I sit here?” I looked at him a little shocked… again. Then after an embarrassing amount of time he started to look disappointed and moved his hand from the chair, I talked a little too fast “Oh yes, of course you can sit there” a little smile on my face.
He sat down next to me, he was pretty buff and he must have worked out. He also had blue eyes and short brown hair. His face was oval and he had gorgeous cheekbones, his hands were massive as I watched him open his folder to the English section and got his copy of the book out. “So how much have you read?” “Uummm all of it, I read it first a couple of years ago and have read it about five times.” He looked at me kind of shocked “what?” I said with a small smile in the corner of my mouth. He looked straight into my eyes and it felt strangely calming. “I’ve only read it twice, I knew we had to read it this year so I read it over the Christmas holidays and then read it again on the weekend.” As he was talking Mrs Henderson walked into the room and then hushed us all. I went to get my pen out of my pencil case and he touched my hand gently and it felt so smooth and my heart skipped a beat. I looked up at him and he smiled. “What are you doing?” I finally whispered. He paused for a moment, and then slid his hand away. “I’m sorry, it’s just that Charles was looking at us and I wanted to freak him out, I’m sorry that was pretty childish.” I started to giggle “what?” he asked. I smiled at him, “it’s ok, that’s funny actually I should be thanking you for it, I think he likes me.” “I know he does”, he winked at me while Mrs Henderson started talking about the first three chapters we were suppose to have read, which most people hadn’t. As the rest of the lesson went by Charles couldn’t help turning around to look at us, but he wasn’t the only one, it felt kinda fun and interesting, but at the same time kinda weird. No one in the whole school really paid that much attention to me, that’s why I think me becoming a prefect, had more to do with the teachers than the student votes.
As the bell rang I packed up my bag and turned my phone off silent, noticed a text from mum for me to pick up some chicken for dinner. I got up from my seat at the same time as Emmett. I noticed that he waited for me. “Uummm do you need a lift or something?” I asked as I got my keys out of my bag. “Nah, I’m parked in front of you, just thought we may as well walk together, is that ok with you?” “Of course” I replied with a smile. I saw Em and she gave me an odd look, I knew she would ring me later. “Emily will probably call you tonight”, he said with a smile. “What are you a mind reader are you?” “Nah, nah, but I can tell by the look on her face. “You can read people then?” “Yeah… kind of”. We got to my car and I put my bag in the boot and then I closed it. I walked around to the drivers’ side and then I noticed the car in front. “You have a Charger?” “Yeah” he laughed, “it’s a good car”, “it’s a fabulous car” I retorted. “I’ll see you tomorrow Ruby.” “See ya,” I said to him as he got into his car.
I got inside my baby and then drove to the shops to get the chicken. I got home and put the cover over my car. I then walked through the front door and up the hallway to the kitchen and put the chicken in the fridge, I then walked upstairs and put my bag down and turned the computer on which is next to my big window. Probably not the best place for it, as I get distracted looking at the ocean. I got out my Ancient History homework and finished what we needed to about Akhenaten. After I had finished that I checked my emails and of course there was nothing interesting, just chain emails that I deleted and one from mum telling me about the chicken again in case I forgot. She always did things like that.
I got out of my uniform and put it on the end of my bed again, then put on some jeans and a black top. I took my hair out and went to my big bookshelf and pulled out Twilight. I was about halfway through it for about the fifth time. I loved it and was in love with Edward… Team Edward all the way. I read a couple of chapters then noticed it was 5 pm. I knew mum would be home in about half an hour, so I put my book away and went down stairs to start dinner, then I realised I didn’t know what mum wanted to make with the chicken. So I left it for her and turned the TV on and watched M*A*S*H. One of my favourite shows along with Supernatural, The Simpson’s, Ghost Whisperer and Medium. I heard mum’s car pull up as M*A*S*H finished and then the garage door open, she put her car away, which was a Toyota Celica. Then I heard it close “Oh crap!” mum screamed at the top of her lungs, I laughed then got up to see what the problem was. She opened the door as I went to open it and she held up her broken fingernail in my face. I laughed again “It’s not funny Ruby, it really hurt.” “Mum it’s barely even broken, you didn’t even break it into the bed of your finger.” “Did you get the chicken?” she asked me in one of her tones. “Yes mum it’s in the fridge.” “Good, oh Ruby can you come into work tomorrow afternoon?” “Yeah sure mum” I told her non-enthusiastically as I walked back to the long brown lounge in the living room. Mum walked into her room, which was at the front of the house, next to the front door.
“Have you done your homework?” she asked as she pulled her long blonde hair back. “Yes mum, you know I would have,” “yes I know, but it’s just a habit, I have to ask”. Why? I thought, she knows me by now; I always do my homework when I get home after school. I got up off the lounge and turned the TV over to the news, then followed mum into the kitchen. “Do you need fuel for you gas-guzzler?” “No mum, but thanks”. She hated driving my car; in fact I don’t think she liked it at all. “How was school today anyway?” She asked as she got the chicken out of the fridge and then started to turn the stove top on. “It was fine, Charles won’t stop bugging me, he likes me you know, maybe you shouldn’t have got me the bed” I laughed. “Very funny Ruby, don’t joke about that, it’s not funny.” “It is a little bit,” I told her with a smile. She didn’t smile back. Mum gave birth to me when she was 18 years old and didn’t want the same for me. The usual stories for all mothers that have had children at a young age. Mum turned out just fine though. She never felt the need to get re-married after my father died in a car accident when I was just five years old. Actually she never really even dated. She looked liked me, but prettier. The only difference was our eye colour, she has blue eyes, and I got green eyes from my dad. I don’t think mum likes that much as it reminds her of him. I do actually have blonde hair, but I never thought it suited me, so I dye my hair either dark brown or black, depending on my mood. I’ve even been known to go red.
“How’s Emily today?” Mum asked as she was putting dinner onto the plates and I was setting the small table in the middle of the kitchen. “She’s fine, I think she will call me later.” Oh yeah, school stuff?” I knew why she was asking… boys. I never lied to mum and I never kept secrets, no reason too. “Yeah well, today in English a guy called Emmett came and sat next to me, then after class he walked me to my car and Em saw us, she will want the goss.” “So do I” mum said as we sat down. This really surprised me; she actually wanted to know about a guy that walked me to my car. I though for sure she would be scared of this little development. So I went through and told her all that happened in English including the hand holding, which she laughed at, she didn’t like Charles and more than I did. It felt great to tell her this and she seemed to agree that he sounded very attractive. After dinner I did the dishes… house rules – who ever cooks, doesn’t clean. Then of course the phone rang and Em talked to mum for a bit, then I got on the phone and explained it all to her. “Wow! So do you like him?” she asked. “I don’t know, I mean he seems nice enough, he has a cool car and is pretty good looking.” “Oh yeah he is! Are you going to sit with him all the time in English?” “Yeah I think so.” “Oh I bet this is really bothering Charles.” “Yeah Emmett said that he liked me.” We then started talking a bit about art and Cubism, which I hate, I’m very much a traditionalist, I’m very lucky my teacher is all for that.
We were on the phone for about an hour, then I reminded her about Supernatural and she got off the phone. I loved Em, but man she could talk, another person that could talk under water if given the chance. I walked up to my room to get my tape, came back down stairs and put it in the VHS ready to record. Mum went to have a shower while I was on the phone, she didn’t want to eavesdrop on my conversation, even though I didn’t care if mum heard, as she had heard it all anyway. We watched Supernatural then mum went to bed and I locked up the house, turned off the TV and went up stairs to my room. I put my TV on and watched whatever was on at that moment. I couldn’t remember as my train of thought trailed towards Emmett and the way my body reacted to his touch this afternoon. I feel asleep with that thought on my mind.

aawww Thank you so much Alyisa That's ok, I'm so glad you like it A prefect is just a group of people that help the captains of the school. I gave her things I would want, like the Impala, a big bedroom and an awesome cute guy I made her interested in things I like, like Twilight, HP and SPN I have about 10 chapters, but haven't typed them all yet and I will fix up how the dialogue is written. I will post the 2nd capter now I don't have a title for Chapter 2... I called Chapter 1: The Begining of the EndChapter 2 As the week went on the alarm was not as shocking to me anymore and the days went pretty fast, not as fast as English though. I hated Thursday’s as English was the first lesson of the day. It got to Thursday afternoon and the last period was Modern History, a class that yet again Charles was in and felt the need to have to sit next to me. I rolled my eyes as I saw him walk towards me so we could walk together to class. “I love this class.” “It’s ok, I like Ancient History better though.” “Yeah it’s not too bad.” He replied. Charles walked through the door ahead of me and I heard him gasp “What?” I said looking at him as we walked in. He just looked like a stunned mullet and I thought that maybe someone was hurt, or we had a substitute teacher I turned to look in the direction of his eyes and saw Emmett sitting in the back row with the wall seat left empty. I smiled as I looked at him and then squeezed myself in through the door past him and walked towards the desk.
“You just gave Charles a heart attack, do you know that?” “Yes” he said as a cheeky grin stretched across his face. “But he will survive it.” I laughed and then went to sit next to him. “Why are you in this class?” I leaned down to my bag and got my folder out. “I realised that I wanted to do this subject… what is it again?” He nodded and the cutest smile ever wiped across his face, like it had been drawn there automatically. I had no choice but to smile back, it was an instant reaction, like a puppeteer had pulled the stings on my face and made me smile at him. Having him sitting next to me in class was a distraction, it didn’t bother me so much in English as I had read the book a couple of times and knew all about it, but I really needed to concentrate on the comings and goings of John F. Kennedy. Again Charles kept staring, he was the only one though, and everyone else was over it.
After class he walked me to my car with Em as her car was in getting a rego check and I was giving her a ride. Both her and Emmett got along very well which made me happy. I unlocked the passenger door for Em and then walked to my boot to put in my bag. Then Emmett said to me at my side “do you want to go to lunch on Saturday?” I turned around so fast I nearly fell over and looked straight into his blue round eyes. “I would actually really like too, but I have to work.” He looked at me ”Sunday?” I said with a cute smile that he couldn’t resist. “Sunday would be great.” I gave him my cell phone and home phone numbers. He walked to his car “see you tomorrow.” “Bye”, I waved to him. I got in the car and looked at Em and she knew. “Oh My God! Did he finally ask you out?” she said in a high pitched tone sounding overly excited as if it was her he had asked out. “Yes.” “Yey!” She screamed, and then hugged me. I smiled, and then shock her off as I started the ignition. I dropped her off then went to work for a couple of hours, then came home to get dinner started. I couldn’t tell mum my news, as she was so busy this afternoon and short staffed. I’ve never had to answer the phones I didn’t like it much, I tired to sound like I knew what I was doing, I really had no idea.
“Thanks so much for today hun.” Mum had just walked though the front door. She walked into her room, and then came out in some jeans and her slippers. It wasn’t even cold, seeing as it is February, but I knew that meant her feet where sore. “That’s ok mum, it wasn’t fun, but I survived it.” “How about I take you shopping after work on Saturday?” “Thanks mum that would be great.” I put the dinner on the table, “I would actually like some new jeans, because, well.” I had no idea how to go on, I had never had a problem talking to mum before about anything. This time was different and I couldn’t get the words out very fluently. “I… have a ummm, well, I’m going to lunch on Sunday”… “With Emmet?” Mum interrupted. “Yes” I answered. “Well good for you” she said casually, as she went back to eating her dinner. I didn’t know how to react to that, so I let it go and finished my dinner. After that I went upstairs as I heard mum doing the dishes and started my homework. I heard The X Files theme start up and wondered why mum was watching it when she didn’t even like the show, although I know she loves David Duchovny. Then in a light bulb moment I went to my school bag and pulled out my phone. I had a text. Hay Ruby, how’s your night, hope you’ll watch Medium tonight, Emmett. Silly man. Hi Emmett, I never forget about Medium, see ya tomorrow. Rube. I texted back my nickname; maybe he preferred to call me Ruby. I saved his number in my phone, and then went to delete his text, but I couldn’t do it, so it stayed in my inbox. I went to sleep hoping that the next few days went very fast, well except for English and Modern History.
“Good morning Rube.” I stopped on the stairs. “Mum?” What are you still doing here?” I started down the stairs again into the living room. “I’m starting an hour later this morning, I forgot that my car has to go into the shop today.” “Oh, is someone picking you up?” She staled and I stopped in the lounge room. “Well, I actually wanted to use your car, if I can?” What! She hates my car. “Mum, don’t you hate the Chevy?” “Well it’s big, but I can handle it, plus I need a car all day.” “Yeah sure, so will you take me to school? But how will I get home?” she got up from the chair on the other side of the room. “Well Emily might be able to, you will have to ask her.” Oh great, wonderfully thought out plan this was.
Mum dropped me off at school, I said goodbye to her and started towards the side gate. I knew we had Maths first, Yuk, then Modern History, at least there was something good to follow Maths. “Hey Rube.” “Hey Em, how are you?” “I’m good, where’s your car?” “Mum’s got it today.” I saw the look on her face and started to laugh. “Ha ha, yeah odd ah? Well her car was in the shop today and she needed one for the day, so can I get a lift home?” “Arr sorry Rube I can’t, were going away for the weekend straight from school.” “You can’t drop me off on the way?” “Sorry dad’s got to be on the road at 3pm sharp.” “So you won’t even be here for last period anyway.” “Sorry Ruby.” “No, don’t worry about it.” We got to our seats and as I was sitting down Em looked at me and started to laugh. “I’m sure Charles will give you a ride ha ha.” “Don’t you dare say anything.” I pushed her. She just continued to laugh.
The bell rang and we went to Maths. More algebra, thank goodness Em was always patient enough to help me. The bell rang for the end of the lesson and as we were packing up Em said, “why don’t you ask Emmett for a lift home?” I thought about that for all of five seconds “Yeah I suppose I could.” “You should” Em said with a cheeky grin on her face. I just gave her a look and continued onto to Modern History. “See ya.” She headed to the Science block. I thought about what she had said as I headed to class and it seemed so obvious that I wanted to hit my head in frustration, but I didn’t want people staring at me n the hallway.
I got to class and sat in my usual seat. As I was getting my work out on the Cold War, I heard the chair next to me pull out and I turned around to see Emmett sitting in the seat. “Hey Rube, how are you?” He took the hint. “I’m good thanks, glad Maths is over and it’s nearly the weekend, you?” “Pretty good thanks.” As I watched him take out his work I realised how easy it was to talk to him, like second nature. “What?” he asked with a small uneasy smile, oh crap I was staring again. “Nothing, I just wanted to ask if you would be able to give me a ride home today?” I looked at him as his smile stretched his across the length of his beautiful face. “I certainly can Rube.” “Great!” I replied as the teacher Miss King got the classes attention. I couldn’t concentrate during class, all I could think of was Emmett driving me home, taking me to my house, should I ask him in? What if he doesn’t want to? I shouldn’t be upset about that, as he still wants to go to lunch… I hope. By the time I knew it the bell had rang, and I started packing up when I saw Emmett talking to another taller guy, not too much taller than Emmett, maybe 6.1. He came back over to me “I’m playing footy again this year and that dude was the captain, we start training next week.” “Great what code?” He looked at me “What?” That would be a standard line for us. “Well League actually.” “I love League, I’m so glad you didn’t say Union, or god forbid GayFL.” He looked at me, torn whether to laugh at my play on AFL or not. “What? A girl can’t like footy?” “It’s not that,” he said while shaking his head, as we made our way to our seats for recess. “I just didn’t picture you as a footy fan.” “Well you learn something new everyday.’ I said in a smug tone with a smile, he smiled back at me, “so true.”
The rest of the day went by hassle free. Art was ok; we pretty much just did our own art, no theory today. Ancient History was great, still on Egypt. After our free period Em and her brother (John, who is two years younger) left to go on their weekend away, not before Em begged for all the gossip on Monday morning. “Yes I promise I will tell you what happens, take care Em and have fun.” “See ya Monday Rube.” I waved her goodbye and met up with Emmett to go to English. English went by really fast and when the bell rang I became very nervous with butterflies in my tummy. I said goodbye to Charles as he walked out of class with us and then headed to Emmett’s Charger, I wondered if one day he would let me drive it. He unlocked the door for me and I got in. He jumped into the drivers seat and put his bag in the back seat. The ignition started and she rawed to life with a wonderful grumbling sound.
“This is a wonderful car,” I commented. “Thanks a lot Rube.” “Your welcome,” I smiled. We got to my house and I was glad mum wasn’t home. I got out of his car and so did he. He walked me to the front door and I got up the courage, “would you like to come in?” “Yeah, sure.” I unlocked the front door and walked into the open room. “This is a nice house.” “Thanks, it’s kind of weird and wacky, but I love it. I actually have the whole upstairs to myself.” “That would be pretty cool.” “Yeah it is, did you want a drink or something?” “No thanks, I would like to see your room though.” The smile was back and I couldn’t help return it, it was infectious. I walked towards the stairs and as I went to climb then he took my hand in his. I let him hold my hand as we walked up the stairs. “Wow! Look at that view.” He said as we reached the top of the stairs. He moved towards the big window, still with my hand in his, I didn’t want to let go. “I love it, I was so surprised when we moved here and mum let me have upstairs as my room. I thought for sure it would be hers and I would be downstairs in the front room.” He turned from the window to look at the rest of my room. “You keep it pretty clean,” “Yeah, well except for a couple of clothes on the end of the bed, I don’t like a lot of mess.” He let go of my hand and I was a bit disappointed. He walked towards my wall full of books. “You have an amazing collection, Dickens, Shakespeare… J. K. Rowling.” He pulled out Harry Potter and looked at me. “What? There great novels, very good, I couldn’t put them down.” He laughed and put it back. I walked over to him and asked, “What’s your favourite book?” “I don’t have a favourite, but I am a fan of Dickens’, maybe Oliver Twist. You have Twilight.” “Yeah I do, as you can tell from it’s the cover, I have read it a lot of times.” “So have I, I think Emmett’s pretty cool.” He smiled at me “Oh, of course you do,” I laughed. “So you’ll read this and not Harry?” He didn’t answer.
He put my book back and took my hand again. I took a deep breath and felt warm. “Maybe we should go downstairs.” He said to me after a short period of time. “I’ll meet you down there, I want to get out of my uniform.” “I can understand that, I’ll see you down there.” I heard him go down the stairs and sit on the lounge. I quickly went to my wardrobe, took out a pair of jeans and a black top and put them on. I raced down the stairs nearly tripping on the way down. He moved over on the lounge to make room for me and I sat down. I turned to look at him and he smiled at me and again the infection spread and I smiled back. He took my hand again. “Tell me about your family?” “Well it’s just my mum and I that live here. My dad passed away when I was five years old.” “Oh I’m so sorry Ruby.” He interrupted squeezing my hand tighter. “Thank you,” I continued. “After that I grew up pretty fast, my grandma had to move in for a couple of months while the shock of it passed and mum was able to take care of herself and me.” “How did he die?” “Car accident, a head on from a drunk driver. Dad was coming home from work and he never made it.” He squeezed my hand even more and I looked him in the eye. I then continued, “we moved to Newcastle three years later and mum got a good job with a Real Estate Agent in reception and worked her way up to be in charge of rental properties.” “It seems like you don’t talk about your dad a lot?” “Not a lot, no. I used to, when I was growing up I would ask questions and mum would answer them and show me photos.” We talked about different things all afternoon about his family and more about school. It was a fun afternoon.
I then heard the rumble of the Chevy pull in the drive way and new mum was home. She was defiantly going to meet Emmett now as she would have seen his car and there was no quick escape. I steadied myself and he went to let go of my hand, but I wouldn’t let him, he and didn’t protest. I heard her footsteps up to the front door; she turned the doorknob and opened the door. I was suddenly aware of every sound she made. “Hey honey,” she said as she closed the front door behind her. “How was your day?” she turned to go to her room to take her shoes off and put her bag away. “It was fine mum, Emmett gave my a ride home.” She walked back into the lounge room and he stood up. “Hello Mrs Greene” and held out his hand to shake hers. She stood there frozen in time and looked at him. I looked at her wide eyes, hoping she would say something soon. “Hello, Emmett is it?” she shook his hand and I sighed in relief. “Yes ma’am.” “Oh please,” she said with a smile at how well mannered he was. “Please call me Christina. Are you staying for dinner?” “No thank you, it’s my sisters birthday and were going out for dinner, I had better get going actually.” “Well it was nice to finally meet you Emmett.” “You too Christina.” I walked him to his car out the front of my house. “I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to hold you here on your sisters birthday.” “That’s ok Ruby, she’s at uni and won’t even be here until about 6 pm.” I felt better about that. “I’ll see you Sunday at midday.” “See ya then.” I smiled at him. I had a feeling that, like me, he didn’t want to leave. However he got into his car and drove off. I went inside and mum and I went to go and pick up her car. It wasn’t until we got home that the questions started. When mum came in she had a couple of pizza’s… one plain cheese, my favourite. I was getting some plates out of the cupboard as mum turned Friday Night Football on. It was Manly Warringah Sea Eagles v the Brisbane Broncos. Mum went for Manly, so I went for them tonight, I hate the Broncos. “So he seems nice”… here we go. “Yes he’s great, I really like him.” Mum stopped and looked at me as I walked into the lounge room with the plates and glasses. “What?” “I think we should talk about this Ruby.” “About what mum?” I stood my ground, not knowing what to expect. “Don’t look angry at me, it’s nothing bad, I just want to know where you see this relationship going? I mean next year your going to uni, what if he goes to a different one, or moves to another state or something?” I then realised she was worried about me. I sighed and walked over to the lounge and sat down next to her as the commentators were going through the Broncos team line up. “Mum, I’m not thinking that far ahead, we haven’t even been on our first date, I’ll take each day as it comes, you know that.” “I do, and that’s what scares me, you need to start looking at your future.” “I’m only 17, I’m not worried about my future, well except for getting though my exams at the end of the year. As for university, if Emmett is still a part of my life then, then we will probably pick the same uni, beside the fact that there’s one right here.” She looked at me and realised she wasn’t going to win this one, but I also knew it wasn’t over. “Fine, lets just watch the footy then.” She turned back to get some pizza out of the box and pour us drinks. Manly won, so she was a lot happier at the end of the game, I didn’t feel like watching the second game of New Zealand Warriors v South Sydney Rabbithos. So I went up to my room. I put my pyjamas on and got into bed. I didn’t close my curtains that night; I just stared out the big window into the ocean and then finally feel asleep.
