Okay, so, fanfic. Updates will be when i write them. Here goes! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘This is bad. This is so very very bad.’
Sam looked around him, the night air blowing against his face as he scanned the outside of their motel room, door still open. Dean sat inside on his bed, scanning his father’s journal with a look of panic in his eyes. Sam was right. So very very VERY bad.
People on the streets looked at Sam, covering their laughter with their hands as they passed.
‘Are you SURE we went back in time?’ ‘Positive, Dean, These people look ridiculous, and they won’t stop looking at your car…’ ‘They touch it, they die. But, maybe we just – ‘ ‘Dean, does your phone work?’ ‘What?’ ‘Just… try…’
Dean reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, some spare change and a lighter and spilling them onto the bed beside him. He snatched up the phone. No signal.
‘Well, do we have a newspaper or something? Something with the date on it?’ ‘They might have one in the office, I’m not sure we got one today.’
Dean leapt from the bed, following Sam out the door. They ran towards the motel office, not far from their room, but far enough to leave them slightly breathless as they entered the small room. Dean almost choked as he pushed open the door. The walls were covered in a tacky old wallpaper that DEFINITELY hadn’t been there when they check in. A middle-aged man was asleep behind the counter, a much younger version of the old coot who had met them their earlier.
Dean rang the bell, still glaring at the walls. Thank god for renovations, he thought. The man awoke, shaking himself when he got a good image of the guys in front of him. The taller one, with his goofy hair and concerned eyes had the most HORRIBLE clothes he had ever seen! The one with the slightly less disturbing hair was not better. Where had these guys come from, certainly not anywhere with good threads!
‘Who are you? What do you want?’ he asked cautiously, not sure if the men were mentally stable.
Of course, Sam and Dean already knew this man, had already met him, so that was NOT a good sign… not that his miraculously youthful looks were.
‘Sir, we need to borrow your newspaper for a moment… please.’ Sam began. ‘Get your own newspaper. This isn’t a library, it’s a motel. You want a room or not?’ ‘Look,’ Dean added, ‘We already have a room, we checked in this morning about 10, we just need to see the front page of the newspaper. That’s all. Now. Please.’
The man looked at Dean skeptically for a moment before reaching below his desk and pulling out a crumpled newspaper, tomato sauce staining the lower half of it. Sam reached across and took it from him, his eyes widening and his jaw dropping when he caught a glimpse of the date.
‘This is from today?’ ‘Can you not read, boy? The date is at the top…’ ‘Yes, but, is that today? I don’t have a calendar.’ ‘Yeah, that’s today. April 16th 1976.’~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sam turned to his brother, about to comment until he saw the look on Dean’s face. His eyes were darting around the room, but he looked deep in thought.
‘Dean?’ No response, his eyes just kept darting. ‘Dean!’
Snap, he was back with him. ‘Huh?’
‘You okay?’
‘Yeah, ‘m fine. Uh, talk. Now. Outside.’
They left the suddenly younger man where he was, Sam quickly excusing them as Dean made for the door without a response.
‘Sam, where is the amulet?’
‘In my pocket… why? I mean, we don’t exactly have any leads on what to do with it…’
‘Sam, this is so very very bad. You realize that we are in a time before Boston released Don’t Look Back, I mean, before goddamn GREASE was made. Before Smokey and The Bandit… wait, hang on…’
Dean walked over to the Impala, watching the people stare at him as he opened the driver’s side door and sat down, door open as he spoke to Sam.
‘Why are they looking at my baby? I mean, she’s a 67, if its 76, its not the first time they’ve seen a 67 Impala before, right?’ He let his head fall into his hands, before quickly jumping up again. ‘I’ll ask them!’
‘Dean, what? No! You can’t do that, they’ll think you’re crazy.’
‘And that’s so new?’ he pushed past Sam, approaching the nearest 70’s civilian, a young woman in her mid-to-late 20s.
‘Excuse me, miss. What are you looking at?’
She started to blush. ‘Your car… its… so old… I mean, those Trans Ams are the in car now, that thing is OLD.’
‘What are you kidding me? She’s a classic!’
Sam stepped in. ‘Sorry to bother you, thank you for your time,’ he pulled Dean away from the woman, turning him as he did so, with a brotherly punch to the arm. ‘Dude, what are you doing? Lets just figure out what’s going on, okay? No more harassing these people.’
He pushed his brother back inside the motel room, making him sit down as he proceeded with what Dean thought was the longest speech, ever.
‘We need to figure this out, soon, okay? Who knows what could happen in our futures, in everyone ELSE’S futures if we spend too long here. Hell, demons could be terrorizing the future world as I say these words. If not that, we could be screwing up the space time continuum, or whatever, because neither of us are born yet.’ He paused. ‘Which brings me to say, Dad isn’t a hunter, but he is alive, Bobby probably isn’t much of a hunter either, not that that makes a difference, because we don’t exist to him, so even if he could help us, he wouldn’t because we’re strangers in weird clothes. Any ideas, Dean?’
Dean shook his head. ‘Well if we weren’t in a time before she was born I would say that our best bet at the moment would be Bela, because she knows about all this amulet/ curse whatever crap… as for other hunters, Daniel Elkins must have been hunting for a few years now. Maybe try him?’
Sam flipped open his father’s journal, reaching towards the motel phone. He dialed the number…
UPDATE TIME!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first time, the phone rang out. The boys had sat in their cheesy 70s motel room, completely out of place for a while, waiting for an answer, before Dean got up and opened the curtains, peering out the window into the still night air. People still wandered around, as it was only just dark, but the streets were slowly dying… that was when he had the idea Sam would no doubt kill him for when they arrived back in 2008.
Sam redialed, intent on getting an answer. He got one.
‘Hello? Who are you? What do you want?’
Huh, Sam thought. Strange, a hunter who has kept the same number for so long. He let out a breath, feeling stupid for letting the phone ring so many times. Of course he wouldn’t answer the first time! It was the rule of most hunters to answer the second time around. John had taught it to Dean when he was about ten, Sam when he reached that age. If someone really wants to talk to you, they’ll call again.
‘Uh, Hello. Is this Daniel Elkins?’
Dean turned from the window, sitting beside his brother on the bed, trying to hear what was going on, without getting too close to Sam. It was awkward, but he managed…
A gruff voice spoke. ‘Depends on the one asking…’
‘Oh, yeah, sorry… uh… we have a problem, my brother and I, and we think that you might be able to help us…?’ he voiced hopefully.
There was a pause.
‘Who is this?’
Sam paused… panic in his eyes. Oh god, who were they? Did they tell the truth? We’re the sons of a man you haven’t met… but how else could it be said? He looked at Dean. Dean’s eyes were darting around the room again.
‘Uh… look, you don’t know us, but, uh… you will know our dad. Soon… well not very soon, but… ‘ he sighed. ‘Do you think you can help us or not?’
‘If you have my name and number, you have my address, yes?’
‘Yes. Uh… I think so…’
‘I’m staying here a few more days, then out again on another hunting trip, come as soon as you can, I’ll see what I can do.’ He hung up, obviously confused and worried about what this ‘problem’ could be.
Dean looked at Sam. ‘Address? Colorado, yeah? We’ve been there before…well, we will… ’ he cocked his head to the side.
‘Yeah… so, head out tomorrow morning, or now? I mean, its pretty late, Dean.’
‘I don’t think I can sleep but… head out tomorrow morning… after, uh… a little trip…’ he smirked, unsure of how Sam would react.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
‘Dude, you look ridiculous.’ Sam looked both amused and appalled at how perfectly awry Dean’s plan had gone.
‘What? No. No, I look fine. I blend in now, unlike you, futuristic-boy.’ He smoothed a hand over his jeans, in all their tight, flared glory. At least he was having fun.
‘I’m staying in these clothes, thank you.’ ‘Oh, come on. You’re the one who always wants a costume, to fit in, look the part, yet you won’t dress up for the occasion?’ he glared at Sam. ‘Elkin’s is gonna think you’re nuts.’
‘He probably already does, Dean. Look… I’ll get a shirt, but that’s all. No…’ he grimaced at how tight his older brother’s pants were. ‘…flare jeans.’
Dean rolled his eyes at Sam, eying a hat stand by the window of the store he had bought his newfound fashions in.
‘Oh, god, NO, Dean. NO hat.’
Dean smiled. ‘My money.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Flares and all, Dean got into the Impala, adjusting his white cowboy hat as he did so. Sam stared at his hands for about an hour of their trip to Colorado, the rest of his time spent picking at his shirt. Weirdo 70s shirt, he thought. Damn buttons are made of… what the hell is that?
‘You okay, Sammy?’ Dean's deep voice cut him out of his thoughts, suddenly.
‘Fine.’
‘Okay.’ He turned on the radio, not expecting what he heard.
‘A bit of an oldie now, back in 1972, the Eagles had a great new song, here it is, The Eagles, with ‘Take It Easy’…’ The intro to the song began, followed by the first few lyrics before Dean started to smile.
‘At least they don’t have crappy music here… stupid future and it’s rap…’ he tapped along, singing along after a while, as Sam tried to hide his laughter, wishing he had bought a cowboy hat of his own, suddenly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More soon, hopefully. The boys will visit Elkins...
Just catching up with this and I am really intrigued! I am a fan of the time travels shows 'Quantum Leap', 'Voyagers' and.........I was in High School in April of 1976. There, I said it. And with that said, may I add that the 70's weren't THAT cheesy.....at least at the time.....well maybe a little For the record, they were known as bell bottoms then, not flare jeans, way to make me feel my age!  Oh and as far as music goes - Dean is so in his element if he hits on the right stations, its just before the battle of the Bee Gees! (Saturday Night Fever - 1977) Although, I remember a lot of Carpenters, Diana Ross and James Taylor......You brought me back so effectively, you have me on a tangent here, sorry,,, Can't wait to see what you have in store for our boys - and if you need any help on the history, feel free to pm me! Great Job! I love how you have Dean getting right in to the spirit of things. So Dean to play the part while Sam just wants to hide - must do something about that truthiness gene of his! hugs jen
