As to Shadow's comment about them not being topical....I don't think the show would work inside a bubble. This isn't a "somewhere sometime" show, it's very much present day, and as such the characters are bound to have thoughts regarding current events.

So very true, and actually one of the parts of the show that I really love. It grounds it in a way to real life, instead of presenting the Winchesters as these mythical heroes out there "somewhere" fighting evil in some alternate reality. It makes their lives more immediate and real. Who hasn't considered the Winchesters and the coming Apocalypse when each new natural disaster hit the news?

And Freyja and anyone else who might find offense or be slightly bothered by it, I do sympathize with your feelings, I just think in this day and age there are shows that are much more heavy-handed or radical, like South Park. Supernatural always breezes off their digs and it is more for the humor factor, with a twinge of political commentary or contempt thrown in. It's a part of the show that I enjoy, not knowing what next that they will slip in. I guess I like edgy.

Never said you can't have a massive eye roll at the "children" calling names and whining- just that isn't it at least a relief that someone else is echoing your observation. "No, it's not just you we see it as well." and putting that into a mainstream media. Granted this show isn't going to have much (if any) effect on political opinion, but it's at least not docile.

  I hear ya B.J,

I don't get offended by it but I sympathize with what the OP was trying to say... I would never stop watching SPN for that at all or at all anyhow, I don't let it ruin my enjoyment of the show. I just can understand what the OP might be feeling... I just think it should be a bit more balanced ya know.

And I wonder since when is being an Independent mean you can't sympathize or get bothered by the constant digs at one side over the other.. shrug.gif Oh well!

Or being unafraid to offend means they are edgy and bold. All in your interpretation.

As for the term "off the reservation", whether you find something offensive or not all comes from your perspective. I choose to not let things offend unless it is obviously meant as an offense. I don't think Dean meant it in an offensive manner when he said it, just like him saying Siamese Twins wasn't offensive in intent. Sam is more politically correct, which being an educated man he is more in tune with that. Dean is the common man and as such he speaks his mind with colorful phrases that he sees nothing wrong in. Hence, I don't either.

Living in AZ surrounded by reservations and knowing lots of Native Americans, I don't think most would find the term offensive. I dare say they would say it themselves and wouldn't blink if someone said it to them. It's not like anyone in this day and age believes that 'Indians only belong on the rez'. I think we've evolved a long way from that. And their sense of humor about past historical deeds is pretty good, all things considered. I went to see a comedy duo who specialize in their Native American sensibilities and I honestly was shocked at some of the comments that came out of their mouths, but the Native Americans in the audience were roaring with laughter...seeing the truth in what they were spoofing.

I hope Supernatural doesn't lose viewers because of offending them with their views and digs, but then if we do...they probably weren't the sort of viewer to accept the rest of Supernatural either. Our show isn't meek and mild or for those without a stout heart and strong immune system.wink.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

Maybe they should just ignore the topical stuff all together, right or left.

It makes the show seem petty and preachy.

Not to mention kind of dumb, considering the "real world issues" that they tackkle are usually over simplified and characteratureized until it becomes an unrealistic cartoonish parody.

The term "off the reservation" is very racist at it's core. It's a reference to American Indians leaving the reservations.

I think that definition depends on where you grew up hearing it. I grew up in sort of rural SD, my home town didn't make Federal population numbers to be called urban until the early 1980's. So around here "off the reservation" means 'out in left field - you aren't where people expect you to be or your behaviour is different than expected'. My SIL grew up on the rez, Standing Rock if you want to be precise, and she says that term so your meaning is just one of several.

As an Independent I see things more clearly than those attached to either side... But this isn't about other shows this is about SPN's constantly poking fun of the right, but yet nothing about the left. And it does make you wonder..

ETA- To take out my previous comment cause it had nothing to do with SPN... LOL
Also to change wording because attack was to strong of a word.

Maybe it's just me...but if you were really Independent would it matter whom was made fun of as long as attention was being called to the inanity?

It is very true that both sides have their mouth piece of embarrassment....but if I'm honest, it's easier for me to note "right wingers" (as a broad generalization lets say) than left. Are they out there...absolutely. Are they as loud....doesn't seem like it. And from the stand point of the SN writer..it's a buzz topic - because let's face it, this show is HIGHLY referential and some of it is topical.

My point is, I'm not sure that it's a secret plot to take shots at any certain political or religious group any more than Jon Stewart...it's merely to get a laugh. Is it going to appeal to everyone? No, because that's impossible, will they hit a majority percentage.. probably.

Either way I'm just glad anyone is making fun of the crazies trying to run the country on paper thin promises and outmoded ideals, no matter who they are.

Well, ha! I'm going to throw my two cents in.

Cas is clearly one of those wishy washy Episcopalian Gods with a liberal agenda. Over here in Canada most of us in the mainstream churches feel that God doesn't care what you do with your genitals either. laugh.gif ---

But some do. However, maybe the conservatives and fundamentalists here are different from the conservatives and fundamentalists in the US because I've never heard of a church that pickets weddings and funerals and I found that a bit absurd. If they did it would not just be sick but illegal. Still, I guess they were targeting the "Aids is punishment for sin" Jerry Fallwell legacy type of crap that does happen in some places.

And cute little churches like that packed to capacity? Never happens.

As clergy in a mainstream church, I didn't find it offensive - because hey, SN is offensive because SN is offensive and they are that way with a lot of groups, although I agree, they do tend to leave out certain ones. But what I found was that it was more annoying than anything because in some regards they are perpetuating a stereotype and it's so prevalent that its almost cliche. I do know there are US churches that are into the whole dinosaurs playing with kids things - but there is another reality too which never gets any attention: social justice, bioethics, environmental stewardship, etc.

With the politician I didn't realize they might be making fun of Sarah Palin - whose greatest gift to the world IMO was giving Tina Fey a reason to make us laugh, while cringing that this is someone who might actually be seen as a legitimate political candidate.

Oh wait - maybe they are performing a public service. laugh.gif

But seriously, I would like a little more balance too. Less stereotypes and charicitures all around, would I think, make SN a bit more intelligent. In the Christian portrayals, I always thought they were bang on in the episode about the dead priest who thought he was an angel. The priest who was left alive and struggling to care for an inner city neighborhood was way more bang on.

I understand what you all are saying and I have no problem with most of it, however; what I think the OP is trying to say is make it a bit more balanced.

If you are gonna pick on someone from the right which they have a lot, they need to pick on someone from the left (but they won't and never do)

Meaning- there have been a ton of Cheney, Palin, Christianity and other Conservative jokes. But nothing about Atheists,  AL Gore or Anthony Wiener... It's easier for people on the left to poke fun on those they disagree with and 99.5% of Hollywood is Left... As an Independent it sorta irks me...  (SPN isn't the only show to do it, SVU- Special Victims Unit does it too)

This is exactly what I was saying! Thanks Freyja!
