Episode Sympnosis:

After the mysterious deaths of two college students, Dean is called in by an old friend, and ex-hunter, to investigate the murders. Little does he know that this isn't any ordinary ghost, but rather a ghost in the machine.

Is it really episode five already? Wow.

I'm a little afraid to read it after reading the little teaser thingie, cuz let's just say, um, yeah, it doesn't have anything to do with quantum nonlocality does it? Cuz I got something of my own working off that principle, and I can't read this if is anything like that. LOL.

Doesn't have anything to do with quantum nonlocality. Just a ghost in the machine that takes a couple twists and turns in the plot. The look and movement was of the ghost in the machine was actually inspired by the look and movement of the "ghosts" in the film 'Pulse'

Good, then I can read it without fear of encroaching on forbidden territory. LOL. Never saw Pulse, actually, I watched the Scream Awards last night on Spike, and I own like all of those movies, and haven't watched a singled damned one. Darn SN takes up all my time. Not that I'm complaining...

GUY (V.O.)
Are you sure this is it?

The camera pushes back to reveal two sophomore college students. KYLE WESTLEY and JAKE MORELAND. We are in…

INT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- DORM ROOM

JAKE
Positive.

KYLE
So, let me get this straight- this, this program is going to make us ‘invisible’?

JAKE
No more cops… no more annoying college computer technicians. Dude, we can download whatever we want- whenever we want and no one’s going to know about it.

A grin forms across Kyle’s face. This, this is going to be cool. Any second now; the download bar nears completion. COMPLETE. COMPLETE. Jake drags the mouse over to ‘open.’ CLICK. CLICK. Nothing. Kyle laughs under his breath.

JAKE
God damn it!

A matrix of numbers begins to form across the screen. The image becomes distorted. WARNING. WARNING. We hear the fan of the hard drive kick into overdrive. WARNING. WARNING.

KYLE
Dude, you are so busted.

Jake’s cell phone begins to ring. He answers it.

JAKE
Hello…

No answer. RING… RING… RING… RING… Jake and Kyle look around the dorm room. Every phone is ringing off the hook!!! The radio begins to constantly change frequencies. The TV switches over to static. The electric clock’s number display changes at a rapid pace. The lights turn on and off.

JAKE
What the hell?

The phones stop ringing. The air conditioning stops. The computer monitor and TV shut off. Jake and Kyle exchange a nervous glance. They get up and walk towards the entrance. They open the door.

INT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- DORM HALL

And look out. Nothing. They step out of the room and look around. Suddenly the lights overhead turn off one by one. The virus was spreading. Going everywhere. RING… RING… RING… Jake answers it, hands trembling…

JAKE
He… hello?

Static. Then we hear it. A woman’s screeching SCREAM. Jake drops the phone, startled.

KYLE
What’s going on?

They both turn around and look back into their dorm room. The TV and Computer monitor have turned back on. They slowly approach the dorm and enter.

INT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- DORM ROOM

BEEP! Jake approaches the computer. A message opens on the screen ‘Do you want to play?’

KYLE (O.S.)
Dude, check it out…

Jake looks over towards Kyle staring at the TV screen. He glances over at the screen. Through the static we can make out an eerie, grotesque FACE.

KYLE
What the hell is it?

CREAK. They glance over at the door. The door SLAMS SHUT!!! The TV screen and computer monitor turn off. Pitch black. All we hear is breathing. Close up on Kyle backing up against the wall. We hear Jake SCREAM at the top of his lungs!!!

KYLE
Jake… what is it? What’s going on?

CLOSE UP on Kyle’s trembling hands searching for a flashlight on the desk. He finds it and turns it on. He shines the light around the room. Nothing. He shines it against the ground. Blood. The light follows it to reveal Jake. Dead. Bleeding. Kyle gulps and begins to breath, terrified. He looks up to see a pale, grotesque figure walking towards him. Coming in and out of view as though traveling through frequencies. The flashlight runs out of batteries. Everything goes black.

SUPERNATURAL: VIRUS

EXT. MA & POP’S DINER- AFTERNOON

The sun shines down upon the streets below. It was another beautiful sunny day in Paradise, Long Island. At the corner of the street we see a small diner. Sam and Dean sit at the table closest to the sidewalk. A newspaper lies on the ground beside Dean’s chair.

SAM
Dean, you have to admit the trail is running cold. We’ve been off hunting things while Dad is god knows where…

DEAN
Remind me if I’m wrong, but didn’t we have this conversation before?

Sam shrugs



SAM
It’s just, ever since that collision… it seems like Dad’s been pushing us away.

A dog stops beside Dean’s chair and takes a leak on the newspaper. Dean notices as the dog finishes its business.

DEAN
(sarcastic)
Cute.

The dog walks off. Dean picks up the paper by the corner with the tips of his fingers, repulsed.

SAM
Pushing me away.

Dean looks back towards Sam, hit off guard.

DEAN
Huh?

SAM
Something happened, something you’re not telling me.

Dean nervously smiles.

DEAN
What would give you that idea?

Sam looks at Dean- you know exactly what I’m talking about. Dean shrugs

DEAN
Dad’s just doing what he thinks is best. For both of us. Trust me, if something did happen- you would be the first to know.

Sam breathes out and nods. Dean looks around.

DEAN
Seems like we’ll have to look elsewhere. This place is clean.

Awkward silence.

SAM
Hey… Dean.

RING... RING... RING... Dean looks towards Sam.

SAM
It's ok..

Dean nods and answers the phone.

DEAN
Dean. Wait... Katie, slow down, what is it?
(beat)
Just like old times huh?... You can count on me.

Sam watches Dean's expressions. Something was wrong. Sam notices a sense of hurt in Dean's eyes.

SAM
Who was that?

DEAN
An old friend

SAM
Friend?

DEAN
Yeah, a friend- alright Sam?!

Sam sighs and nods.

SAM
Where to?

Dean stands up and takes out his keys.

DEAN
The city that never sleeps.

TRANSITION TO:

EXT. NEW YORK CITY- NIGHT (Numb/ Encore by Linkin Park)



The camera flies through the night sky. Past the Statue of Liberty. The Brooklyn Bridge. The Empire States Building.

EXT. NEW YORK CITY- STREETS- NIGHT

We track the Impala driving through the streets of New York City.

INT. IMPALA

Sam glances over at Dean, something wasn't right. Dean notices.

DEAN
What?

SAM
Nothing, it's just- you've hardly said a word since we left.



Dean laughs and shakes his head no

DEAN
Nothing's wrong

SAM
You sure?

DEAN
Positive.

EXT. HOTEL

Dean pulls the Impala to the side of the road beside the hotel. He steps out and tosses the keys to a bell boy. Dean and Sam enter through the double doors and into the hotel. The camera angles up towards the sky as night turns to day.

EXT. POLICE STATION- AFTERNOON

Dean and Sam approach the Police Station.

SAM
This the place?

DEAN
Yeah.

Sam is taken aback. They enter the police station.

FADE TO:

NT. NEW YORK CITY- POLICE STATION- KATE’S OFFICE

We open to a small office with papers neatly stacked on the desk. KATE RYDER, beautiful, smart, and strong, mid twenties, talks on the phone… KNOCK… KNOCK… KNOCK… She glances up. Dean and Sam walk into the room.

KATE
(to the phone)
I’ll call you back.

Kate hangs up and stands up, enthusiastic.

KATE
Dean!

Dean grins, Sam notices.

DEAN
Hey.

KATE
It’s been a long time.

Dean nods.

DEAN
Yeah, yeah it has.

Kate glances over towards Sam…

KATE
And this must be Sam.

Sam nods

KATE
It’s great seeing you again… how’ve you been?

DEAN
Well, you know- the usual. Kill as many evil sobs as I can.

Kate laughs and nods

AMY
Still guns blazing?

DEAN
(flirtatiously)
You know my style.

Sam looks between them, laughing and smiling.

SAM
Wait, you’re a hunter?

Kate nods

KATE
Was a hunter…

Kate looks towards Dean

KATE
So, you remember that group of Satanists down in Oklahoma?

Dean grins and laughs, he nods his head.

DEAN
How could I forget…

Kate looks towards Sam

KATE
I came just in time to save your brother from becoming their next sacrifice.

Dean breathes out and leans forward

DEAN
Hey, I didn’t need your help. I was fine.

Kate laughs

KATE
Yeah, sure… you just don’t want to admit your cute ass was saved by a girl.

Sam laughs, Dean breathes out.

DEAN
So, you said that you needed our help?

Kate nods

KATE
A couple of nights ago, two teenage guys were found in their dorm room- murdered.

DEAN
Murdered?

Kate nods

KATE
Yeah. Follow me.

INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT- ELEVATOR

CLOSE UP Kate presses ‘B1’ camera pulls out.

DEAN
I don’t get it. Why call us?

KATE
It’s not that they were murdered… it’s how they were murdered. I’ve never seen anything like it.

DEAN
What exactly happened to them?

BEEP. The elevator doors open. Dean, Sam and Kate step out.

INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT- AUTOPSY FLOOR

KATE
When we first brought them in, they were perfectly normal. But, since then- their bodies have deteriorated. Almost as though their life force was literally sucked out of them.

Dean and Sam exchange a glance. Curious.

DEAN
You mean like a Shtiga?

Kate shakes her head no.

KATE
I’ve never seen anything like this. No cases. Ever. Whatever caused this- it’s new.

They enter an autopsy room.

INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT- AUTOPSY ROOM

Kate walks over to two metallic gurneys with white sheets covering the bodies.

KATE
Nothing was found on the crime scene. No fingerprints, no sign of entry. It came and went. Nobody saw anything. Like a ghost.

Kate lifts the white sheets. Dean looks away repulsed.

KATE
Dean, I need your help. I have to find out what’s causing this before it strikes again and more lives are lost. You’re the only one I know who can help.

Dean nods. Sam stares at the bodies, holding back vomit.

DEAN
Where did it happen?

KATE
Empire State University.

Dean nods.

DEAN
Whatever caused this- we’ll stop it.



Kate nods

KATE
Keep me updated.

DEAN
Will do.

Sam looks back and forth between them. There was definitely something there. Something happened. Dean sighs he takes out his keys, tosses them in the air and catches them.

DEAN
Come on Sam. Time to get out of here.

Dean walks off.

KATE
(to SAM)
Keep an eye on him.

Sam nods, still wondering what happened. He looks down at the body and follows Dean out. Kate remains behind, she looks down towards the bodies…

POV. KATE

We see Jake. Bald. Pale rotting skin. Decaying flesh. Withered and blackened veins. Eyes- pure white.

ACT II

EXT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY

ANGLE DOWN towards Empire State University.

SAM (O.S.)
So…

EXT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- CAMPUS

Sam and Dean walk through the campus of the university. Sam looks at Dean, curious. Dean notices.



DEAN
What?

SAM
What happened?

DEAN
Two teenagers…

SAM
No. Kate?

DEAN
It’s a long story, besides- it’s all in the past.

SAM
Is it? Because, ever since she called…

DEAN
Sam, nothing is going on- believe me.

SAM
But, there was something?

Dean shoots Sam a look.

SAM
Ok. Ok. I’ll drop it.

Dean continues looking through a pad of paper.

SAM
So, who’s next?

JUMP CUT:
INT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- DORM HALL

Dean and Sam stand outside of a dorm room. A teenage girl, AMY, comes to the door still talking on her cell phone.

DEAN
Amy?

Amy nods

AMY
What do you want?

Dean takes out his badge

DEAN
We’re police officers, just need to ask you a couple of questions concerning a couple of nights ago.

Amy nods and backs away from the door.

AMY
(to phone)
I’ll have to call you back.

Dean and Sam enter and look around. Amy hangs up the phone.

AMY
This is about what happened to Kyle and Jake… right?

Dean nods

DEAN
You catch on fast.

SAM
Can you tell us about what happened that night? Anything you possibly heard, saw… anything at all.

Amy nods

AMY
There was this black out.

DEAN
Black out?

AMY
Yeah, kind of.

Dean and Sam share a confused look

AMY
Everything started going haywire. The TV, lights, radio, you name it. Thought it was a just a glitch in the system- but, it wouldn’t go that far, would it?

SAM
How wide spread was this?

AMY
The whole building went out.

Dean nods, deep in thought.

FADE TO:
INT. EMPIRE STATES UNIVERSITY- DORM HALL

SAM
So, what do you think happened?

DEAN
I don’t know. But, whatever it was- it read off the charts. I mean, technological anomalies are known to occur- but, reaching this far of a distance? I don’t know. It just doesn’t fit.

Sam nods. They approach Jake and Kyle’s dorm room and enter.

INT. EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY- DORM ROOM

Dean looks around. Sam approaches the computer. The cords have been unplugged.



SAM
Hey, Dean- check this out.

Dean approaches Sam and notices the cords.

SAM
Coincidence?

Dean grins

DEAN
Let’s plug this baby in and see what she’s got.

Sam nods as he reconnects the plugs into the computer. The computer begins to heat up.

SAM
Got anything?

DEAN
You could say that.

Sam approaches Dean and looks towards the monitor.

SAM
The hard drive's corrupt.

Dean nods

DEAN
Our black out, only thing is- what caused it?

Sam nods. Dean tries to the turn it off.

DEAN
Doesn’t work.

Sam unplugs the computer. Dean laughs.

SAM
That always does the trick.

They approach the door. Angle back over to the monitor. It turns on. We see the same white face watching them leave.

EXT. NEW YORK CITY- NIGHT

INT. KATE’S APARTMENT- LIVING ROOM

Kate looks out her window. The city lights. Silence. She takes another sip of wine… KNOCK… KNOCK… KNOCK…

INT. KATE’S APARTMENT- ENTRANCE

Kate answers the door. Dean is outside, waiting.

KATE
Hey

DEAN
Hey… can I come in?

Kate nods and backs out of the way. Dean enters and shuts the door behind him. They enter…

INT. KATE’S APARTMENT- LIVING ROOM

Dean leans against the entrance to the living room. Kate approaches the wine cabinet.

KATE
Can I get you something?

Dean shakes his head no.

DEAN
I’m good.

Kate nods and backs away.

KATE
So, what did you find?

DEAN
Nobody heard anything. Nobody saw anything.

KATE
So…

DEAN
There was a black out.

KATE
A black out?



Dean nods

DEAN
Yeah, you know. Electronic equipment gone haywire, picked something up. A signal.

KATE
Where did it come from?

Dean sighs and shrugs

DEAN
Honestly, I don’t know.

Awkward silence. Dean approaches a mounted newspaper article. Kate standing in front of the police department, getting awarded a medal.

DEAN
You never did tell me, what made you change sides?

KATE
Change sides? We’re still fighting for the same cause.

DEAN
You became a cop.

KATE
I had to.

DEAN
You had to?

KATE
I couldn’t keep hunting forever. No one can.

Awkward silence.

DEAN
There will always be something out there to hunt.

KATE
I don’t know why you do this to yourself.

DEAN
(defensive)
What are you talking about?

KATE
Acting as though you’re Atlas with the world on top of your shoulders. You’re not responsible for the world. You can’t save everybody, Dean.
(beat)
You’re not invincible. No one is.

Dean looks out the window and back towards Kate.

DEAN
I have to go.

Dean breathes out and walks out of the room.

INT. HOTEL ROOM

Sam sits, across from the window overlooking the city, browsing the net. Dean enters the room.

SAM
So, how did it go?

DEAN
Don’t ask.

Sam shrugs.

DEAN
Find anything?

SAM
Yeah, or – at least I think so.

Sam turns back to the computer.

DEAN
So, spill, Sherlock- what is it?

SAM
A virus.

Dean scoffs

DEAN
A virus? What you mean like a computer virus?

Sam shrugs and nods.

DEAN
So, what you’re saying is that a computer virus killed two sophomore college students? Right?…

SAM
Hear me out. Now from what we know something happened to their computer, the hard drive got fried.

DEAN
Yeah…

SAM
And then the ‘blackout’…

Dean laughs and shakes his head

DEAN
Yeah, so? You’re still not telling me how a computer virus could have killed these guys.

SAM
Do you know what a virus is?

DEAN
Yeah, it’s that… uh… it’s that ‘thing’ that causes a computer to break down.

Sam shakes his head no.

INT. GARAGE

We pan through a torn down garage. A light emanates from the darkness; we creep in closer to spot ten computer screens, five on top, five on the bottom. A man, in his mid to late twenties, is hard at work. This is a computer HACKER.

INT. HOTEL ROOM



SAM
It’s a living organism that can’t survive or reproduce on it’s own.

INT. GARAGE

The ghost face appears on the screen.

HACKER
What the hell?

The computers begin to turn off. One by one. The hacker stares at the monitors taken aback.

SAM (V.O.)
It’s like a parasite, it needs another living being to replicate.

ZAP! The hacker turns around and sees the pale figure eerily walking towards him. ZAP! Disappearing in and out of view. The hacker begins to breath rapidly- afraid.

HACKER
Wh- What are you?!

The hacker takes off, running towards the entrance. ZAP! We see the electric ghost disappear from behind him. The hacker reaches the door. It’s locked!!! He turns around to come face to face with it. He gulps. The pale figure screams as it takes the hacker in both hands. We see an electrical current flowing between them. The figure steals the hacker’s life force.

SAM (V.O.)
It needs the host’s life force.

The hacker falls to the ground. Dead. The figure disappears.

INT. MOTEL ROOM

Dean looks at Sam, taking it all in.

SAM
That would also explain the corpses that turned up. Something was missing. What was missing- was life.

Dean nods as he looks out the window.

ACT III

LATER:
INT. MOTEL ROOM

Dean and Sam are fast asleep. RING… RING… RING… Dean answers the phone.

DEAN
Hello?

We hear heavy breathing over the phone lines.

DEAN
Who is this?

MAN
Dean Winchester.

DEAN
Who is this?!

MAN
I know all about you.

DEAN
Yeah, sure you do. I’m going to hang up now- ok?

Sam wakes up and looks over towards Dean.

MAN
This isn’t a game.

Dean signals for Sam to get a tape recorder. Sam nods as he approaches the bags and starts searching.

MAN
Drop the case.

DEAN
What’s it to you?

Sam pulls out the tape recorder and approaches the bed. He places it down. Dean nods as he switches the phone over to speaker. RECORD.



MAN
I’ll make this real easy for you. You drop the case, nothing happens.

DEAN
And if I don’t?

MAN
You’ll just have to wait and see.

The man hangs up. Sam presses stop.

SAM
What was that about?

Dean yawns as he wipes his eyes, tired.

DEAN
I don’t know. But, I think we just found our prime suspect.

Dean hits *69.

OPERATOR
If you’d like to make a call please hang up and try again; if you need help…

FADE TO:
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT- KATE’S OFFICE

Kate is asleep at her desk. Pan over to the clock. 6 AM. Dean enters.

DEAN
Rise and shine…

Nothing. Dean shrugs as he approaches her. He notices a glass of water. He picks it up and studies it as the light refracts off of it. He shrugs as he…

KATE
Don’t even try it.

Dean cracks a grin. Kate yawns as she looks at the clock.

DEAN
Become a workaholic when I was gone?

Kate shrugs

KATE
How did you know I would be here?

DEAN
Well, tried your apartment- no one was there. So, I put one and one together and came here.

KATE
Lucky guess.

Dean cracks a grin as he looks out the window

DEAN
Listen, about the other night, I’m…

Dean sighs and nervously laughs as he scratches the back of his neck. He looks into Kate’s eyes.

DEAN
I’m sorry…

Dean and Kate lock eyes, staring passionately at one another. They both lean in… when KNOCK… KNOCK… KNOCK… Sam enters. He looks back and forth between them.

SAM
Hope I’m not interrupting anything.

DEAN
Find a parking spot?

SAM
About fifteen blocks away.

KATE
That’s why you take the subway.

DEAN
Right… I’ll remember that next time.

KATE
So… Any new developments?

DEAN
We got a phone call…

KATE
And?

DEAN
We definitely hit a nerve.

Sam takes out the tape recorder, places it on the desk and presses the play button.

MAN (O.C.)
I’ll make this real easy for you. You drop the case, nothing happens.

DEAN (O.C.)
And if I don’t?

MAN (O.C.)
You’ll just have to wait and see.

Dean looks at Kate.

DEAN
I was hoping that one of your men could give it a look over. Tell us if anything comes up. Voice recognition perhaps.

KATE
Not that much use now a’ days, but we’ll give it a go.

Dean nods. RING… RING… RING… Dean and Sam awkwardly look at the phone. Kate answers it.

KATE
Kate Ryder. Wait, when did this occur? Yes, I understand. I’ll send a couple of my men over right away.

Dean looks at Kate

DEAN
Who was that?

KATE
There was another murder.

Dean nods

KATE
Still have those badges handy?

Dean laughs and cracks a grin.

INT. GARAGE

Close up on Dean’s New York City badge- Officer Kent.

DEAN
Officer Kent…

Begin to pan out.

DEAN
NYPD, we came to survey the crime scene.



The cop allows Dean and Sam to pass through the yellow caution tape. The garage is already flooded with cops everywhere, taking pictures, etc.

SAM
Officer Kent? As in Clark Kent?

Dean shrugs

DEAN
What? Always wanted to be Superman.

Sam laughs

DEAN
Hey, Supes could beat the crap out of Batman any day of the week.

SAM
Want to bet?

DEAN
Come on Sammy. Super strength, super agility, the guy has it all. What does Batman have?
(laughs)
Gadgets?

SAM
High intellect, world’s greatest detective. All he needs is a piece of Kryptonite and Superman is down for the count.

DEAN
Whatever dude, Superman would whoop Batman’s ass.

SAM
Mind over muscle.

Dean scoffs. They approach Kate.

DEAN
ID the body yet?

KATE
Yeah… Turns out, the guy was a hacker.

DEAN
A hacker?

Kate nods

SAM
Anyone check the computer equipment yet?

KATE
Not that I know of, it’s been off since I got here.

Sam nods

SAM
Mind if I take a look?

KATE
Go ahead.

They approach the computers. Sam turns on the computers. One by one all of the monitors come on. Data and warning alerts blare across the screens. Dean grins, Sam turns back towards Dean and points to his brain. Dean rolls his eyes- yeah, yeah. All of a sudden the lights begin to turn off one by one.

KATE
What’s going on?

DEAN
A blackout.

Sam turns off the computers. The lights turn back on.

KATE
What does this mean?

DEAN
We have a ghost in the machine.

SAM
You’ve heard of a virus before, right?



KATE
You mean like a computer virus?

Sam shrugs and nods

SAM
There are nearly 7 billion audio and video recording devices in homes around the world…. Every one of them is a portal.

Kate looks confused.

SAM
Think about it, it’s not that farfetched. Electronic malfunctions near and around paranormal activity. EVP. Etcetera. You put them together they all have one thing in common.

Kate is taken aback, she nods.

DEAN
Exactly.

Kate’s cell phone rings.

KATE
Kate Ryder… yeah, I’ll be there right away.

Kate hangs up

KATE
They checked the tape.

DEAN
And?

TRANSITION TO:
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT- ELECTRONIC HEADQUARTERS

Dean, Sam and Kate stand behind a computer technician (GALE) furiously typing at the keyboard.



GALE
The voice belongs to a one Douglas Thompson.

A profile appears on the screen.

GALE
He was a top computer engineer working for Comp Tech on a new form of artificial intelligence. Planned on programming human brain waves into the computer.

DEAN
What happened?

GALE
One thing led to another and he was fired. The project- terminated. Deemed too dangerous for human testing. His reputation, ruined.
(beat)
Well, agh… here’s where it gets interesting. Two weeks later- he broke into Comp Tech headquarters. He experimented on himself. The next morning, his body was found. Strapped to the mechanism that he set up. Fried, eyes pale white.

Sam nods, taking it in.

SAM
Can I have a copy of all of the details you have surrounding Doug and the project?

GALE

Dean paces the halls, he turns towards Sam; Kate leans against a doorway.

DEAN
So, what do you think we’re dealing with?

SAM
Best guess- the project worked. Doug found a way to hack himself into the hard drive. Now he’s everywhere.

POV. SECURITY CAMERA

ANGLE DOWN.

KATE
How do we stop it?

Sam bites his lower lip

SAM
I have no idea.

POV. NORMAL

Dean stops pacing.

DEAN
What if we attack it at its source?

Sam nods

SAM
Could work, but we would need to figure out a way to bypass whatever systems have been set up.

GALE (O.S.)
I can help.

They turn around to find Gale- he was standing there listening the whole time. Dean cracks a grin.



DEAN
Alrighty then… time to go shut Douglas down.

POV. SECURITY CAMERA

ANGLE DOWN on the scene.

ACT IV

EXT. COMP TECH- NIGHT



ANGLE DOWN on Comp Tech headquarters. Night. The camera plummets. Dean, Kate, Sam, and Gale look up towards the glowing red logo- CT. Dean looks over towards Sam.

DEAN
Ready?

Sam nods. Gods of War by Def Leppard begins as they approach the building. Dean looks at the lock, it’s electronic, he frowns.

DEAN
Man!

Gale clears his throat.

GALE
Move aside boys time to watch the master at work.

Gale approaches the lock and takes out a device, he places it on the electronic lock. Dean and Sam exchange a curious glance. The lock opens and a green light appears. Gale grins.

DEAN
I’ve got to get one of those.

Gale grins and shrugs. Kate opens the door. They enter.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN FOYER

Dean looks around the Main Foyer.

DEAN
So, first things first- we find where this sucker is located.
(beat)
I say we split up, get more ground covered.

Sam nods in agreement.

DEAN
Alright, Kate and I will start on the top. You guys start from the bottom up.

Dean tosses Sam a walkie-talkie. Sam nods as he tucks it into his pocket. Dean and Kate begin to walk away.

SAM
Hey.

Dean turns around.

SAM
Be safe.

DEAN
You know me little brother… I’m always safe.

Sam laughs and shakes his head no.

SAM
Just be careful.

Dean presses the up button and the elevator doors open. Dean turns back towards Sam and presses his hands together as if in prayer.

DEAN
May the force be with you.

Sam cracks a grin and shakes his head no. Dean and Kate enter the elevator. The doors close behind them.

INT. COMP TECH- ELEVATOR SHAFT

ANGLE DOWN as the Elevator ascends and the camera pushes through into…

INT. COMP TECH- ELEVATOR

Dean looks at the floor buttons. 49 floors. He breathes out. 47 lights up

KATE
Just like old times huh?

Dean grins as he looks into Kate’s eyes passionately.

DEAN
Just like old times.

DING! The elevator doors open breaking the moment. Dean nervously laughs and itches the back of his neck.

DEAN
After you.

Kate leaves the elevator, Dean follows close behind.

INT. COMP TECH- HALLWAYS

Sam and Gale explore the halls.

GALE
So, you two aren’t really cops are you?

Sam laughs as he shakes his head no

GALE
Then, what exactly do you do?

SAM
You want the truth?

Gale laughs

GALE
Don’t tell me- you work for the mafia? Warm? Cold? Freezing?

SAM
Eight below zero.

GALE
Wow. I was way off. So, what is?

Sam shrugs

SAM
We’re hunters

GALE
Hunters?

SAM
Supernatural, ghosts, monsters…

GALE
Like the Ghostbusters?

Sam cracks a grin and laughs

SAM
Yeah- like the Ghostbusters

INT. COMP TECH- DATA ROOM

CLOSE UP on Dean, a green glow beams across his face. Pan back. He is currently at a computer searching through the blue prints. He finds the location of the main terminal for the project. Kate leans over his shoulder. Dean equips his walkie-talkie.

INT. COMP TECH- FILE ROOM

Sam and Gale are searching through the filing cabinets.

DEAN (O.C.)
Sam!!! Help!!

Sam’s eyes bulge wide open.

SAM
Dean! What’s going on?

INT. COMP TECH-DATA ROOM

Kate flirtatiously pushes Dean’s shoulder

KATE
You’re bad

Dean cracks a grin

DEAN
I found the main compound for the project.

INT. COMP TECH- FILE ROOM

Sam breathes, shakes his head no- that’s relief.

SAM
Where is it?

INT. COMP TECH- DATA ROOM

DEAN
Twentieth Floor. Second Corridor. Room 220.

INT. COMP TECH- FILE ROOM

Sam nods

SAM
Got it.

Sam looks towards Gale

SAM
Twentieth floor.

Gale nods

TRANSITION TO:

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Sam and Gale enter and look around. This was definitely the place. Gale approaches the center of the room and takes off the drape from the virtual reality mechanism. The mechanism looks similar to the chair devices in the Matrix films.

GALE
So, let’s log in.

Sam nervously nods. Gale approaches the computer.

INT. COMP TECH- HALLWAYS

Dean and Kate walk through the halls

SAM (O.C.)
We’re in

Dean cracks a grin and nods.

DEAN
We’ll be there right away.

They approach the elevators.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Sam nods as he glances over towards Gale at the computer.

GALE
Brace yourself, things are about to get a heck of a lot worse.

INT. COMP TECH- ELEVATOR

Dean glances over towards the number display in the elevator. The numbers rapidly change.

DEAN
We have to get out of here.

Dean starts to bang on the ceiling. The elevator begins to PLUMMET!!! Dean PUSHES and the metal opening at the top opens. He climbs through.

INT. COMP TECH- ELEVATOR SHAFT

Dean kneels on the plummeting elevator, reaching his hand into the elevator.

DEAN
Grab my hand!!!

Kate nods as she takes Dean’s hand. Dean pulls her through. They look around.

KATE
Now what?

DEAN
Haven’t gotten that far yet.

Kate looks around and notices the cables of the elevator shaft. Dean nods. They toss themselves at the cables and GRAB hold. CLOSE UP on Dean’s cable- SNAP… Dean plummets.

KATE
Dean!!!



INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

The lights are off. Electronic equipment hums.

SAM
How long is this going to take?

GALE
I… I don’t know. Something- someone is blocking us.

INT. COMP TECH- ELEVATOR SHAFT

Kate stares down- no sign.

KATE
Dean!!!

We hear Dean coughing. His hand appears grabbing hold of a Elevator opening below. He climbs up.

DEAN
Didn’t think you would get rid of me that easily did you?

Kate cracks a grin.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Sam looks around and breathes out.

INT. COMP TECH- HALLS

Dean wedges the elevator opening open. They walk through.

DEAN
Remind me to never take an elevator again.

Kate laughs.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Sam looks towards Gale.

GALE
I’m trying- I’m trying… it’s not working.

Dean and Kate enter.

DEAN
How’s it coming along?

GALE
We’re blocked.

Dean frowns and nods

SAM
Any way of getting around it?

GALE
I’m trying.

Kate motions to the virtual reality chair.

KATE
What about that?

GALE
I don’t know how it works, even if I did. It’s untested. It’s dangerous.

Dean approaches it.

DEAN
It’s worth the risk. Could you plug me in?

GALE
I could give it a shot.

Sam steps forward and shakes his head no.

SAM
It’s my turn.

Dean shakes his head no

DEAN
Sam, no- no way.

Dean approaches the machine and glances towards Gale

DEAN
Plug me in.

Gale nods.

JUMP CUT:

Dean is plugged into the mechanism. The camera rotates around the chair.

GALE
Ready?

Dean nods

DEAN
Ready.

EFFECTS: The camera spins around faster as we enter a virtual dimension.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Dean stands in a virtual reality plane. He looks around at the green grids.

DEAN
Yo Doug, come out- come out wherever you are.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Kate glances towards Gale

KATE
How is he?

GALE
He’s hacked in.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Dean notices Doug approaching him. He grins.

DEAN
What took you so long?

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

GALE
We’re in. He just needs to hold him off for a couple of more minutes.

Sam nods.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Dean approaches Doug.

DEAN
So, what?... Nothing to say?

DOUG
It does get quite lonely in here and you have something I want.

Dean arches his eyebrow

DEAN
Dude, in case you haven't noticed- I'm not that way.

DOUG
Something- I can't live without.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Gale hits a button on the keyboard.

GALE
We got it.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Doug charges at Dean and tackles him to the ground.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

CLOSE UP on Gale hitting 'enter'

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

The whole virtual complex begins to break down.

DOUG
What’s happening?

Dean grins

DEAN
Game over bitch.

EFFECTS: Doug breaks down and dissolves out of existence.

Dean looks down at his hands to see that he too is disolving. He closes his eyes.

DEAN
There's no place like home. There's no place...

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

DEAN
Like home.

Dean opens his eyes. He's unstrapped from the mechanism. Kate is staring down at him.

KATE
(playfully)
Make it back in one piece Dorothy?

DEAN
(playfully)
Shut up.

Sam snickers as Dean gets up. Gale tries to break the awkward silence.

GALE
Well, now that that’s been handled with- whose up for a pizza?

Dean walks towards the exit, Sam stops him.

SAM
You could have been killed.

Dean looks at Sam and shrugs. Dean leaves the room. Sam breathes out and looks towards Kate.

EXT. GROUND ZERO- NIGHT

Dean looks down towards the ruins of ground zero. The night air reflecting off of nearby skyscrapers, fog swirls around on the ground. Dean breathes out as he leans over a banister. Sam approaches him.

DEAN
How’d you find me?

SAM
Kate told me that you might be here.

Dean nods and looks up towards the sky- remembering.



DEAN
They didn’t deserve what happened to them. They didn’t deserve to die the way they did. You know what frightens me? That man is capable of doing something like this. Causing hell on earth; heck, I thought I saw it all with everything we’ve been through with Dad. But, when I saw that plane hit the first tower and then the second plane. I wished it was just a dream. But, it wasn’t. It was real. There wasn’t a supernatural entity behind it.
(beat)
We should have seen it coming. All of the signs

Sam nods.

SAM
The prophecy by Nostradamus

Dean breathes out, we see the cold air coming out.

DEAN
These were everyday people Sam. They did nothing wrong. Wrong place at the wrong time; death has a plan, but what kind of plan kills millions of lives. Innocent men, women… and children. All dead. And for what? Nothing!!! The crimes that men can commit are more frightening than any form of the unknown. That’s what scares me the most. That even though we’ve encountered the supernatural on countless occasions, we have still to know what causes men to do the things that they do. Where’s the motive in taking lives? What kind of God would allow that!

Dean takes out the EMF detector. We see that it is going hay wall.

DEAN
Why is he still holding onto them? Why won’t he let them go? Over the years, I’ve witnessed what evil can do to good people. How it can break them down, twist them until they are no longer recognizable. Sometimes it comes from without possession. Other times… somewhere inside us is an aspect of life that we can’t explain. The true unknown. What makes people commit the acts that they do… evil infects. The true virus. That’s why I didn’t want to go to Roy’s. Remember Max?

Sam nods

DEAN
Look at how over the years, everything that happened to him made an impact on what happened to him? How that evil, from when he was abused as a child led to his decision in how to use his gifts.

Sam shrugs…

SAM
It was too much to handle.

Dean shakes his head no

DEAN
Look at you Sam, you have premonitions. I don’t see you planning a killing rampage. Dad saved us from what could have happened. That’s why I do what he tells us to. He saved us. And because of that, because of what dad gave us. I feel that it’s my responsibility, my duty to save others. I mean, our family’s screwed up enough as it is- why not try to help some others. Make things more bearable.

Sam looks at Dean concerned and then out towards Ground Zero. The camera flies back as we…

The camera pans through the streets. Cars RUSH past the screen. Angle towards Dean standing beside the Impala, Sam is already sitting in the passenger seat. Dean looks at Kate.

DEAN

KATE

Awkward silence

DEAN
It’s getting late.

KATE
Yeah?

Awkward silence.

DEAN
I’ll see you around.

Kate nods

KATE
Whenever you’re in the city…

DEAN
I will.

Awkward silence.

KATE
Don’t be a stranger.

Dean cracks a grin.

DEAN
Me? Never.

Dean and Kate share an awkward glance. Dean approaches the driver’s side of the Impala.

KATE
Dean, thanks- about…

DEAN
Don’t worry about it.

Dean gets into the Impala and drives off.

INT. IMPALA

Sam glances over at his brother, lost in thought.

SAM
I thought in the end, the hero is always supposed to get the girl.



Dean shrugs and Sam nods. Sam looks out the window.

EXT. POLICE DEPARTMENT

Kate watches the Impala fade off into the horizon.

ORIGINAL ENDING

The original ending involves Sam logging into the virtual reality realm. This ending didn't seem right, thus I logged Dean in. Also interesting to note, that the 9/11 scene did not follow this scene- just didn't fit.

Kate motions to the virtual reality chair.

KATE
What about that?

GALE
I don’t know how it works, even if I did. It’s untested. It’s dangerous.

Dean approaches it.

DEAN
It’s worth the risk. Could you plug me in?

GALE

DEAN

EFFECTS: Follow the electrical currents through the wires and… CLOSE UP on Sam’s eyes closing.

Sam opens his eyes. Pan out. We are in an area surrounded by green grids.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Dean glances towards Gale

DEAN
How is he?

GALE
He’s hacked in.

Dean nods as he looks at Sam

DEAN
You can do it Sammy.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Sam walks through the green grid areas.

SAM
Douglas, I know you’re here. Watching me. Watching us. Come out where I can finally see you.

DOUG (O.S.)
You know life is always better in death. More fun. You can’t believe the types of things you can get to do.

SAM
You’re a murderer.

DOUG (O.S.)
That’s only scratching the surface.

SAM
Show yourself.

Doug appears in front of Sam.

DOUG
Being dead changes a man. You’d be surprised what you would do- if given the chance. This life, the life of a hunter, it wasn’t meant for you. You were meant for something else. A greater destiny. It’s not your fault your mother died.

SAM
How do you know about that?

Doug points to his head.

DOUG
You’d be surprised how much information I was able to gather about you and your family.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

GALE
We’re in. He just needs to hold him off for a couple of more minutes.

Dean nods.

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

DOUG

Dean grins

DEAN

Dean unplugs Sam from virtual reality. Sam’s eyes remain closed. Dean looks up towards Gale. Gale lowers his head. Dean shakes his head no.

DEAN
No… no…

INT. VIRTUAL REALITY

Sam stares at his hands as he begins to dissolve out of existence.

INT. COMP TECH- MAIN COMPOUND

Dean waves Sam’s hair back

DEAN
You can make it.

Kate holds her hand to her mouth. Several seconds tick by. Sam’s eyes snap open. Sam sits up as he takes a deep breath. Dean cracks a grin.

DEAN
We got him.

Dean grins. Gale rubs his hands together.

GALE
Well, now that that’s been handled with- whose up for a pizza?
