Rating: K+ for now. May change in the future. :)

Disclaimer: I do not in any way own nor claim to own Supernatural and its contents. Including Dean and Sam, sadly. *Sigh* What I do own is the plot, Wyatt and Theo.

Summary: Set in AU season 5, Adam didn't exist. Lucifer has risen. The angels aren't listening. Dean soon discovers a family secret; and now there is so much more at stake. Can the Winchesters survive?

Chapter One: We Who Have Changed

"One...two....three." Dean counted off slowly, hiding a smug grin as Sam pulled up his chair and sat down on it. A second later there was a loud farting sound, and everyone in the diner began laughing. Sam lifted his bottom from the seat, horrified to find a whoopie cushion underneath him. "Dean!" He exclaimed, a less than amused scowl on his face.

The older man grinned in reply, congratulating himself on his simple yet effective plan. "Score one for me." A coy smirk lit his face, annoying his little brother to no end. Sam gave a roll of his eyes, tossing the whoopie cushion into a nearby trash can. "Jerk," he grumbled.

"Bitch." Came the expected banter, but it just didn't feel the same anymore. Not since Dean had completely lost his trust in Sam. Well, not completely but mostly. The events in the past year or so had changed them both dramatically. Sam for the worse, Dean for the better. All because of that nasty bitch who called herself Ruby. Hell, Dean wasn't even sure if she really had been a female.

At that thought, he shuddered inwardly. Sam screwing a male demon (actually, the thought of even a demon) disgusted Dean. They were worse than the scum of earth, which was saying a lot because even humans could be crazy at times. "Uh, Dean?" Sam clicked his fingers, waving them in front of Dean's unwavering gaze.

He quickly snapped out of it, blinking at his smirking brother. "Sorry, was just thinkin' of that hot piece of ass over there." Dean amended, gesturing to the hot brunette waitress heading their way. Sam muttered something Dean couldn't quite catch, though he did make out a few words to be, "...always using downstairs brain;" and, "..can't keep his mind off sex."

"What can I get ya, boys?" The waitress spoke, her pen poised at her pad ready to take their orders. You, sweetheart... Dean thought dryly, but switched his thoughts to food instead. "Cheeseburger with fries and a coke, please." He gave a charming smile to the waitress, whose cheeks turned a light pink and she turned to Sam.

Sam scoured the menu before finally placing his order. "Black coffee and a salad, please." He shrugged, watching as the waitress wrote the orders down and bustled off.

"Dude, you really don't know how to eat." Dean joked, opening up the local newspaper he had only just recently bought. The boys were located in a town called Everett, which was situated somewhere just out of New York City. Though the town might be close to the Big Apple, surprisingly it was quiet and a beautiful place to be.

Neither of the Winchesters suspected a case here; but nevertheless Castiel had advised them to check it out. That was the only thing he had said before disappearing as usual. What could be so important here that Cas told us to check out? Dean wondered, having never really understood the angel well.

"Looks like there's no unusual incidents to report, nor mysterious deaths," the older Winchester remarked dryly, the tone of his voice indicating to Sam he was not impressed. Sam took the newspaper from his brother and took a look for himself. Dean was right. Nothing unusual or weird or odd or mysterious to have been printed in the newspaper.

"So why are we here, then?" Sam spoke out loud. Dean gave a quiet snort and leaned back in his seat. "You tell me, Geekboy." He ran a hand through his hair, a small sigh escaping his chapped lips.

Before Sam could reply, the waitress bustled over. She hummed to herself, setting the boys' orders down in front of them. With a last wink at Dean she walked off to take someone else's order. Dean grinned at his brother, who could only shake his head before they both decided to devour their food.

After leaving the diner, Dean and Sam were driving back to the motel they were currently staying in when suddenly Castiel appeared in the backseat. "Jesus Cas!" Dean jumped, still not used to the angel's sudden appearances. Castiel merely looked at him with that blank gaze of his, as if he had no idea that suddenly appearing would scare the crap out of the car's occupants.

"You need to quit that, seriously." Dean warned, his heart rate settling down to normal as his eyes quickly switched back to the road. "I apologise, Dean. If I had a way to forewarn you of my appearance I would use it." Castiel looked down, then back up as he remembered why he had appeared.

"I have news for you two..."

Chapter Two: Truth Or Trick?

"Wait, what? Come again?" Dean spluttered in clear disbelief, but a little hint of relief could be heard in his voice. Castiel had decided it best not to tell the two brothers his news until after they were safely situated in the motel room. The angel looked to Sam, whose face registered nothing but total shock and along with his brother disbelief.

"I am sure you heard me, Dean. Though if you wish for me to repeat it-" ,

"I heard, I heard! I just.. I mean.. how do you know for sure?" Dean questioned, hardly daring to believe what the fallen angel had told them. There had to be some mistake, there just had to be. False information, perhaps. Somehow, though, it didn't make sense. The older Winchester sat down on the motel bed, looking up at Castiel.

Castiel sighed, a rare action that he only learned off Dean who had done it so many times. "Listen to me, Dean. Would I tell you if I thought it was false, or a lie, or a deception?" His burning blue eyes gazed into Dean's mentally tired green orbs. "But maybe you've been led to believe it's none of those things. Maybe you're being tricked too." Sam piped up, deciding to add his two bits worth in.

The angel turned to look at Sam, his gaze as if you were being x-rayed. "My sources are very.. knowledgable." He hesitated, knowing more than he was letting on. Dean caught onto this, his green orbs hardening. "Cas... whatever you're holding back, I'm pretty damn sure Sam and I should know." He put on his best intimidating face.

Castiel took a step back, preparing to disappear. "I will inform you if I receive any more information.." And just like that, he was gone. Dean growled out in frustration, wondering what the hell Cas was holding back. He glanced to Sam, not quite sure what to make of the little news the angel had provided them with.

Yet no matter how little it was... it still came as a shock to both brothers. Dean got up, beginning to pace. "As much as I'm hopin' it's true, Sammy, " he glanced at his baby brother, "you know our luck with this kinda stuff."

Sam nodded in agreement with Dean, watching the older Winchester pace. "But... it couldn't hurt to hope, y'know?" He offered, a small smile forming on his face. They hadn't heard such good news in a long time. Then again, it wasn't necessarily good news to the rest of the world. Just a small relief to the Winchester brothers.

Dean crossed his arms, frowning a little. "And what if it turns out to be false, Sam? We'll be back at square one then." He shook his head, opening the mini bar fridge in their motel room. His younger brother merely remained silent, knowing Dean was right. Pulling out two beers, he handed one to Sam before opening his own.

"Well, we can't exactly focus on it anyhow. We've got better stuff to do." Dean shrugged his stiff shoulders, taking a deep swig from his beer.

Sam slowly took a sip from his own beer, an indignant look on his face. "Like what, Dean? There's not even a single hunt here. So what "better stuff" do we have to do than to actually find out if it's true?" He asked stubbornly. His older brother narrowed his eyes, but sighed. "Damn Cas. He should have told us who Lucifer's gunning for now."

"We need to find him- or her, and fast." The taller man replied, raising his beer to his lips once again and practically chugging it down. Dean raised an eyebrow watching his baby brother. "You alright there, Sammy?"

Sam couldn't help but grin a little. "Sorry, it's just... I'm really hoping this is true... well, ah, kinda. Bad news for the person Luci's chosen." He shrugged. Standing up, Sam proceeded to toss his mostly empty beer bottle away into the trash can in the corner.

"So, what do we do now?" He inquired at Dean.

"Call Bobby, let him know what's happening and see if he knows anything..."
