Title: Hear No Evil
Description: A hunter faces a harsh reality...
gaelicspirit - June 19, 2008 10:25 PM (GMT)
I can never figure out what category to put stories in... so I'll stick with Miscellaneous. I hope that works for anyone who wanders by and happens to read.
This story blossomed out of a daydream while sitting on a work conference call.
How would I make a living if I couldn't hear? Of course... this led me to think of our boys, namely Dean, and from there grew this story.
I'll link you to the ff.net post, as usual, and if you choose to read, I dearly hope you enjoy.
Slainte!
Hear No Evil, Part 1
alena - June 20, 2008 07:45 PM (GMT)
Hooray Gaelic! :cheer
Glad to see you're posting another story here, I've been wandering the site "just in case". Thanks for the link and I'll pop back when I've had a chance to read it. Hearing loss is a topic that interests me as I'm hard of hearing, so Dean coping with deafness and his hunter lifestyle is a fascinating idea.
alena - June 21, 2008 05:22 PM (GMT)
This must be the fastest I've ever managed to read and review!
I had to jump my mind back to Season 2 Trickster and remind myself that there's no deal yet, but the brothers must have had to adjust after the mind games in Tall Tales.
I had a quiet "moment" picturing the boyschanging in the rain after the ala ;) ...
Anyway, back to the story...
As always you have given so much food for thought. The flashbacks fitted so well, teasing out information and allowing Dean's guilt to bleed through. The brothers' edginess after the Trickster and John's big reveal about Sam's destiny feels so real. I really like the way that you capture their character.
I liked the small town reactions to the brothers' arrival and their assumptions about them. Trust Dean to work his magic on Sadie!
I'm very intrigued by Wren and her backstory. Something just seems off about her and the explosion.
And poor Dean what have you done to him???
:music (Dean and his music!)
I've enjoyed this chapter so much that I've been recc'ing this on the Rec Thread here. I'm totally hooked now and drooling for the next chapter.

Right here goes- this is the first time I've tried a quote and I'm completely clueless as to the protocols....
I can't believe it's taken me so long (this evening) to pluck up courage and press a button!!
As for rec'ing you- my pleasure. :D
I'm certainly looking forward to the next chapter- is it two weeks yet?

Hello!!
I was finally able to complete chapter two after a bit of a... delay, you could say when my parent's visited for the baby's 2nd b-day. My Dad, um, deleted about 18 pages of the chapter. *weeps*
So, here it is in it's recreated state. I sincerely hope you enjoy, and I will do my best to not have such a wait between chapters.
Hear No Evil, Chapter 2
alena - July 12, 2008 03:42 PM (GMT)
Oh how awful for you! :o I can't imagine losing all that hard work. I feel bad enough when my connection times out on me or decides to go all Dean Winchester and blocks perfectly acceptable messages and I lose my reviews I'm spent ages trying to post......
Anyway, I'm so pleased to see your next chapter is up :)
I hope the Birthday went well
xgetawayxcar09 - July 12, 2008 05:37 PM (GMT)

alena - July 12, 2008 07:27 PM (GMT)
Hi Gaelic, are you posting this over at UnGen (supernaturalville)? I know that there are some people who tend to read, post and review over there who really enjoy your stories (bulletbabe, birdie, Janger to name a few).
gaelicspirit - July 13, 2008 12:03 AM (GMT)
Hey getaway -- thanks SO much for reading!! I'm so pleased you are enjoying and am very happy that it's entertaining you!! *looks at avatar* ... gotta say, I agree... ;)
Hi alena -- it's good to see you, girl. Birthday went very well -- I was so proud of my Mo Chuisle.
To answer your question, I've had some things happen to me over on UnGen... not with the site specifically, but with some of the people who run it. To protect myself a bit, I decided that when I finished "In the Light," that would be the last story I posted there. I debated for a long time if I should pull my stories from the site, but finally decided that, in a way, that would be letting someone else get the best of me, so I decided to try to simply quietly leave.
I have put a note on my bio and in the final chapter of "In the Light" over on UnGen that I'll be posting here, on ff.net, and at LJ. I would love to see people from there again -- luckily I've maintain contact with birdie and bullet, but I know that I've lost some people with this choice, which makes me sad. It was always such a warm thrill to see people's comments.
Anyway, I thank you for asking and for your interest, and I'm so pleased that you're continuing to read. It always makes me so happy to see other people jump on and offer feedback, comments, opinions, etc., but basically, you're the reason I keep coming back to sn.tv. :) No pressure! Ha!
Take good care and I hope you enjoy chapter 2.
Slainte.
alena - July 13, 2008 04:16 PM (GMT)
 Thanks Gaelic! No pressure eh? But really I do appreciate you posting here as it's my main site (though I do occasionaly venture out and comment elsewhere). I sent your ff link to bullet, birdie and Janger, but they've probably already found the story.
Thanks again and I'll return when I've had a chance to read chapter 2- it's end of term and all the reports, reviews and files are due in- RL is a pain!

I am really enjoying this story so far. I love the long chapters instead, with the majority of the stories, having short updates. You do some great writing and I'm looking forward to readin the next chapter of this amazing story :D.

Thanks alena -- make sure you take care of you. :) I'll watch for your review!

Loved chapter two, and I really like your long chapter especially. Can't wait to read the next one.
gaelicspirit - July 13, 2008 09:57 PM (GMT)
Thanks, adder. I am so pleased to see you -- and I'm glad you like the long chapters. I try to write shorter, I swear, but... this always happens. :)
SupernaturalGeek - July 13, 2008 10:11 PM (GMT)
Hello! I am going to cheat a little and copy & paste my review from ff.net, but I know how nice it is to get reviews on all the places you post so I wanted to do it here as well :D
That was a really intense chapter. You weave the many threads that bind Dean & Sam together so well, and you really pick up on the unconcious moments we get in the show - the silent communication, the quick touches, the way they at times mirror each other. I wonder how much of that is written sometimes and how much comes from Jensen & Jared..
I really feel for Dean - for someone who needs to be in control as much as he does, to not be able to hear is just unbearable. Even though he knows he can totally trust Sam it's still hard for him to do so, when push comes to shove.
I like George already and Mike - or should I say, Denzel - was amusing too. I am definitely intrigued about what is going on and also to see how they are going to cope with Dean's injury and managing the hunt.
I'm also enjoying the flashbacks as well. It's a timely and heart-breaking reminder just how fast Dean had to grow up and how much responsibility he had to shoulder. Even if he doesn't really resent Sam for it.
Looking forward to the next chapter!
gaelicspirit - July 14, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
Hey SPNGeek -- thank you so much for this! I haven't had a moment to reply to your ff.net review, but I will! If you take the time to gift me with a review, I will definitely reply!
I'm so happy you're enjoying this story and the unfolding plot. I, too, am a hurtDean addict (I know, duh, right?) but I love the stories that offer me plot along with pain, so I hope I'm doing that for you.
Thanks again and I look forward to your thoughts on Chapter 3!!

alena - July 22, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
Hello there Gaelic- sorry that it's taken me so long to post here, but I've finally got my final reports in and found some time to read chapter 2! I hope you don’t mind, but I haven’t had much time so I’m going to leave a short review now and write something more fully later.
I'm really enjoying this story and getting caught up in the characters. Great start with Dean's memories of telling Sam the "big secret" reveal and his anxieties about Sam’s reaction to the news and the implications of what it could mean to them. It felt so oppressive and compelling. I liked the crossover into Sam in the ER and his reciprocal concern for his brother and his lingering anxieties over Dean’s near death experiences.
It's nice to read a story where Dean doesn't become an immediate "victim" once faced with a possible long term disabling injury. His frustration and isolation rang true to character with the odd half caught words (lip reading is so difficult) from lip patterns and reliance on facial expression and the way that he knows Sam so well that he can sort of fill in the blanks.
There is obviously something more going on with George’s problem and I’m wondering if Camilla is really the problem or if there is something else. It will be interesting to see if Sam really allows his brother into the hunt.
As I said, I’ll leave a better review later, but just to let you know I’m still around, enjoying this story and waiting for the next chapter.
:D
gaelicspirit - July 22, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
Hon, no need for a better review -- this was fantastic!! Thank you so much for reading and taking time to leave me feedback. I breathe it in.
I'm glad the way Dean is reacting in this story rings true to you. I could never really see him as a victim. He is a fighter, a warrior, a soldier. Regardless of what life hands him. Even when Sam died, he fought -- making that deal, bringing Sam back.
That's what being a hero is about for me.
You may be on to something with George and Camilla. I will admit to being less cagey about the plot in this because I'm focusing on the senory aspect, but I hope that when it all comes together you enjoy the end result.
Thanks again for reading!!
Best to you,
Gaelic

Thanks Gaelicspirit to let us know when you're updating your story :)
Outstanding writing so far. It's like a very captivating book, you want to read more and more, never stop until the very end :)
I'm at the edge of my seat waiting for your next chapter :)

Thanks so much Oceane!! I appreciate your multiple-location reviews, it warms my heart that you'd make such an effort. I am happy to hear you compare this to a book! Hee.
I'm working on the 3rd chapter now and hope to post this weekend.
Thanks again!

Wonderful, chapter 3 has arrived before I set off to visit my family!
I won't be able to review for a while as I have to borrow my brother's computer (my laptop won't talk to his Livebox) and that means waiting until my brother, sister-in-law, nephew and niece aren't using it!

very nice :D I can't wait to read what happens in the next chapter. I'm so amped to read what's gonna go on next.

supernaturalfreak8 - August 13, 2008 10:54 AM (GMT)
YAY a new chapter :D. I gotta say, you are a really great writer and that was also a great chapter you wrote. I like it how you got in there where Dean can understand what Sam is saying but no one else. .I have a feeling that I know who the siren is but I'll let you tell the story :).

Hey! Thanks so much for your comments SNfreak8 and SNintoJensen! I am so pleased that you're reading and thrilled that you've enjoyed.

I am working on the next chapter and am having a great time. Which is kinda sadistic, really, considering how much pain is involved...
I hope you enjoy what's to come!

Well, I'm not completely caught up yet, but I thought I'd tell you how much I've enjoyed this story so far. It's been really good - as all your stories usually are. I look forward to finding the time so I can read chapter four, but the first three were fantastic and I look forward to seeing more.

alena - August 17, 2008 12:32 PM (GMT)
Sorry it’s taken me so long to post anything Gaelic, I haven’t fallen off the planet, but I’ve been in some horrible AU with NO INTERNET!!!! My brother’s connection is now functioning, but “spotty” at best so I’ve put this together and I’m hoping the connection will last long enough to post...
Just to say Gaelic that I’m really enjoying this.
I really sympathised along with Dean and his dizziness as he woke up (I suffer from vertigo and it can be just like that).
The mystery is tantalising me- it feels so close, but not quite enough to put all the pieces together! The bird theme is intriguing- what did happen to Dean in the house (?) and then there’s Wren... What happened with Dean and the sudden barrage of sound at the end of their encounter? It’s interesting to see Wren’s sound world compared to Dean’s silence and I’ve got a strange feeling about how she seems to affect those around her like George and Sam. <_<
I was glad to see Dean finally got his shower (evil grin!). ;)
The interactions with Sam and Dean work very well- Dean needing to remind Sam to look at him when talking, piecing together what needs to be said, discussing working together and the ramifications now, their concern for each other and just being brothers. I like the way the brothers’ understanding of each other means that they can still communicate and Dean recognising that Sam would fear his inability to protect Sam from his destiny. I also liked the way that Dean still returns to his music with the rhythm and beat still carrying through. It’s such a part of Dean and his coping strategies!
Mike is a great character. Trust Sam to get caught by him at the graveside and trying to explain a salt and burn without getting clobbered or arrested has to be the brothers’ ongoing nightmare- can’t wait to find out more about Camilla’s fate. I felt so sorry for George finding out about Camilla’s body like that. Just as well that Sam hadn’t salted and burned her- I don’t think that the Winchesters would have avoided police trouble if he had!
By the way- Yippee to see Chapter4 is up- it’ll probably be a while before I can review to that too...
gaelicspirit - August 18, 2008 03:28 PM (GMT)
Oceane -- thanks so much for reading and for the multi-site reviews! I really appreciate you taking the time. I'm pleased you're enjoying this and hope you like what's to come. Working on the next part now. :)
Alena, you poor dear! No Internet! I think that would be as bad as... no chocolate! I'm glad to see you and thank you for your comments. I feel for you -- I, too, suffer from vertigo and it hits without warning and is just awful. One of the reasons I rarely ever got drunk in my hayday because it was too much like that feeling. :)
I hope you like Chapter 4 -- I'm moving fairly quickly through 5. Oh, and I'm thrilled you like Mike. Hope his fate works okay for you... *whistles*
Best to you both always,
Gaelic
