Devils We Make
They sat in the Impala in utter silence, Dean every now and then casting a weary eye at Sam, who sat with his head down. Ellen kept a respectful quiet, watching the road ahead with focused eyes. When Dean saw Sam reappear from that hell hole Hades, he was relieved…for a moment, then he realized the demonic Dean wasn’t following. It didn’t take a genius to realize what had happened. Poor Sam, first Jessica then the demonic Dean. While John’s death had also hurt Sam, the pain was joint felt…it had hurt Dean as well.
Sam closed his eyes, which were burning from being in the heated city. His demonic brother died over and over in his mind. After killing Mary, Sam’s demon power had gone away…so why did he feel even more like a monster? He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream until his throat bled, he wanted…to feel something. Sam, from the moment he’d returned, had felt a resonating hollowness in his heart. He was so cold and the tears…they just never came. Sam bit his lip, opening his eyes to the sunrise. He knew Dean wanted to say something kind, but honestly Sam didn’t want to hear something that Dean wouldn’t normally say. The Bobby’s house came into view and the Impala roared to a halt. Both Winchesters and Ellen got out and entered the familiar doorway. Bobby closed the door with a snap, making Sam jolt slightly.
“Sam, it’s okay,” Dean said soothingly.
“No Dean, it’s not okay…it never will be,” Sam replied deadly.
“Hey, don’t talk like that! It’ll always hurt, but we got to move on,” Dean said, clasping Sam’s arm.
“Move on? MOVE ON!? HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT!?” the previously silent Sam roared suddenly.
“Sam, calm down. I know you miss him, hell, I even miss that smug bastard, but you have to let him go. Otherwise it’s going to kill you on the inside!” Dean said, staring at Sam.
“Kill me on the inside, huh? Well, that’s too late,” Sam said tonelessly, jerking his arm free and sitting down on an old couch.
“What are you saying, Sam?” Dean asked, kneeling down to see his little brother’s face.
“Nothing…just nothing. We should thank Bobby and go find a motel, I’m pretty tired,” Sam murmured, not meeting Dean’s eyes.
“Sam…fine. I’ll go thank Bobby, why don’t you go out and wait in the car?” Dean said, pulling on a weak smile.
“Whatever,” Sam sighed, standing and going out the door.
The gravel crunched beneath his shoes as Sam made his way towards the Impala. He felt so drained…so tired. It was almost like he wasn’t himself anymore. Sam sat for what felt like hours it the chilly car before Dean appeared in the driver’s side mirror. Grunting inwardly, Sam twitched his brother a faint grin. Dean nodded; Sam could tell he was trying to be positive. But even Dean couldn’t possibly know the silent agony Sam was feeling, or better yet, not feeling at this moment. Minutes ticked by as the motel lights flickered into sight, finally they could get much needed rest.
Sam followed Dean with his stuff, dropping it next to an empty spot and plopping down onto an oddly decorated bed. He heard Dean sigh as he too sat down onto the other free bed. Darkness soon enveloped Sam…and that’s when the dream started…

Djinn - January 27, 2008 12:15 AM (GMT)
‘A man, most likely a hunter, was walking to his car. The gravel crunching ominously in the silence of the night as he jingled his car keys. You didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize something horribly wrong was about to happen. Sam could feel it in his gut, this man was in danger. He opened his mouth to scream, to yell, or to just alert the hunter something was coming.
Then, as fast as it came, the vision shifted…and there was blood. Oh god, so much blood. It would put the best gore movie to shame, flying in crimson arcs all over the place. But it wasn’t just the blood, no…Sam felt the cold biting into his skin, he felt the blood flecking his face. The hunter was long dead, the vision shifted to the man’s car. The murderer’s face came into view, spattered with blood, but still visible. It was Sam…he was grinning wickedly through the distorted reflection.’
“OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD, NOOO!!!!!” Sam awakened, screaming with the tang of blood in his throat.
“Sam!? Sam! What is it?” Dean yelled, leaping over to his brother’s thrashing form.
“No, no, no…” Sam sobbed hoarsely.
“Sammy come on, tell me what’s up?” Dean said, placing a steady hand on Sam’s heaving back.
“Don’t. EVER. Call. Me. SAMMY!!!” Sam roared, twisting around and putting his older brother into a headlock.
“Sam…” Dean gasped, now under his younger brother.
“Don’t look at me, don’t talk to me, and DON’T EVER TOUCH ME!!” Sam raged, holding tight onto Dean.
Dean tried to respond, but his face was smashed into the bed. What the hell was going on? Sam hadn’t had visions in a long time, so what was causing this? All the sudden a knock shattered Dean’s thoughts…Bobby. Dean had told the older hunter to come over once they’d found a motel. ‘Thank god,’ Dean winced as Sam pressed down harder. Was Sam actually trying to smother him!? God dammit! Dean grunted and with what was left of his strength managed to free his mouth.
“BOBBY! HELP!!” Dean grudgingly screamed as Sam covered his mouth again.
The older hunter smashed open the flimsy door, entering the room to find Sam smothering Dean. The look on Sam’s face is what threw the veteran hunter; it was hateful…nothing like the Sam he knew. Shaking his head, Bobby leaped on top of Sam and pulled the seething Winchester to the ground, pinning him. Dean rolled the other way, gasping for air. Bobby strained to keep Sam down; the youngest Winchester was fighting hard. Dean reappeared, still gasping, and with a pained look brought his fist down on Sam’s head, knocking him unconscious.
“What the hell was all that about, Dean!?” Bobby said, getting up from the floor.
“Sam…he must’ve had a vision or something…it wasn’t like him, Bobby,” Dean wheezed, sitting on the edge of the motel bed.
“Damn straight, now let’s get him tied up before he wakes up,” Bobby huffed, grabbing Sam’s limp frame and pushing it into a vacant chair.
“God, I never knew he was that strong,” Dean said, rubbing his throat.
“Me neither,” Bobby agreed, tying Sam’s wrists behind him.
Sam had a dull throbbing pain resounding throughout his skull. Not to mention the fact his throat was killing him, what had happened? He let out a groan, flicking his eyelids open to see a concerned Dean and suspicious Bobby. Sam also noticed his arms were tied behind him…oh god, what did he do?
“Dean?” Sam croaked, raising his head slowly.
“You okay, Sammy?” Dean asked, Sam noticed his brother had paused before saying ‘Sammy’.
“Yeah…it was the most horrifying vision I’d ever seen,” Sam rasped, shivering from the thought of all the blood.
“Vision? What was in the vision, Sam?” Bobby asked, his face morphing into a concerned one.
“Some man, a hunter I guess, someone or something was killing him. There was so much blood,” Sam whispered, closing his eyes to block out the memory.
“Bobby? You know anyone who got attacked last night?” Dean asked the hunter.
“Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do. A friend of mine said a hunter was killed last night, pretty gory from what I heard,” Bobby stated, shaking his head sadly.
“Oh god, we’re too late,” Sam muttered, hanging his head again.
“Hey, you know sometimes the visions aren’t always projected towards the future. Don’t beat yourself up about it, we’ll figure it somehow,” Dean said, patting Sam’s shoulder.
“Speaking of beating…why am I tied up? Did I hurt you, Dean?” Sam said with sadness in his eyes.
“Well, after your vision…you kind of spazzed out and tried to smother me, but that’s in the past now,” Dean said, shrugging and bending to untie Sam.
“Smother you!?” Sam said, wearing a look of shock on his face.
“Yeah, Bobby pulled you off, noticed you were smothering me, and I knocked you out. Look, stop acting like I killed your puppy. We know it came as an after-effect from the vision, so leave it,” Dean ordered, tossing the chord aside.
“Dean, can I have a word?” Bobby asked, motioning towards the doorway.
“Yeah, sure. Sam, I’ll be right back,” Dean said, nodding comfortingly at his silent brother.
“Okay,” Sam sighed.
Sam rubbed his wrists as Dean exited the motel room. He felt a pang of guilt for not telling Dean the whole vision…that he’d seen himself after the murder. None of his visions had ever put him in the position of the attacker, which meant Sam was the one who did it…

Djinn - February 10, 2008 04:26 AM (GMT)
Sam sat, staring off into space; he couldn’t remember when he’d woken up. But why did he try to smother Dean? The only time his visions got physical like this was back in Hades, but that was another reality…this was his. Dean had gone out to talk to Bobby; curiosity was gnawing at Sam’s insides. What could they be talking about? Getting up slowly, he crept quietly to the door. The two hunters were talking regularly, so it wasn’t hard to hear their conversation.
“I’m just worried about Sam, Bobby. What if this happens again?” Dean sighed, aggravated.
“We’ll deal with that when it happens again, but for now…just keep him in your sight. It worries me he had a vision about the attack and frankly, I think he’s holding some information back,” Bobby reasoned.
“Sam wouldn’t do that, Bobby,” Dean returned, doubt lacing his voice.
“No, Sam wouldn’t…but he’s been acting funny ever since he got back from Hades. Who’s to say that reality didn’t knock something loose?” Bobby said.
“Knock something loose? You don’t think he’s losing it…do you?” Dean whispered hoarsely.
“Maybe. Maybe not. Time will tell, just watch him, Dean,” Bobby said.
“I hope to god you’re wrong, Bobby,” Dean murmured.
“Me too, Dean, me too,” Bobby sighed.
Sam furrowed his eyebrows; they thought he was going insane!? Not to mention, the person he’d come to trust like a father was telling Dean to baby-sit him. Sam shuffled towards the bed, anger coursing through his veins. Staring hard at the floor, Sam noticed Dean’s silver gun. It must’ve fallen to the ground in the chaos of his vision. Sam had been seconds from sitting on the creaky bed, but shifted to pick up the cool metallic weapon.
“Dean loves you more than me,” Sam whispered hatefully at the silver gun.
Sam continued to stand there, gun clenched tightly in his hand. His fingers quivered and his knuckles turned white. All it would take was the wrong finger movement…and then he’d be free. A tear slid down his face as fragments from the recent vision flashed in his head. Sam never noticed the two hunters standing, staring in shock at Sam.
“Sammy?” Dean asked quietly, slowly coming forward.
Sam’s head snapped up, the moment of weakness had passed as fast as it had come. He blinked and turned to face Dean, wearing his trademark grin.
“Dude, you’ve got to keep this somewhere safe. I’m not picking your shit up anymore, jerk,” Sam smiled, tossing the gun to his brother.
“Shut up, Bitch,” Dean retorted uneasily.
“Well, you boys should come to the meeting with me. A bunch of hunters are getting together and plan on getting the son of a bitch that killed that hunter,” Bobby said, clearing his throat.
“Okay, we’ll follow you. Sam, let’s go and no, you can’t bring your make-up,” Dean grinned wickedly.
“Ha, ha, Dean. You’re so funny,” Sam said sarcastically, following his brother to the Impala.
“Don’t forget handsome, the ladies like the handsome,” Dean said wiggling his eyebrows.
“Please excuse me while I claw my ears off,” Sam laughed, rolling his eyes.
The laughter helped calm the uneasy mood that had been looming over the older Winchester’s head. Dean didn’t want to accept it…but could Sammy really be losing it? The poor kid literally went to hell and back, the last thing he needed was to go insane. It also didn’t help that he and Bobby had walked back into the motel room to find Sam toying with a gun. No, Sam would be fine…Dean would do everything in his power to make it so. Gritting his teeth he focused on the street before him…yes, everything would be alright.
Sam was resting his head lightly against the Impala’s window as trees flashed by in the fading night. The conversation he’d overheard was still picking at his insides, why would they automatically jump to the insanity solution? Inwardly groaning in fury, Sam closed his eyes. He was so sleepy from the day’s mayhem, he needed a small nap and then he’d be ready for the meeting. But oh god, he shouldn’t have closed his eyes because as soon as he shut them…the vision came back with a fury.
‘He stood, watching the dark trees shiver in the cool breeze. A dull roar became louder and louder as he watched the street intently. A black Impala came roaring by, the driver absorbed in the street in front of him. Smiling darkly, he brought up his sticky red stained hands in a mocking wave.
“Be seeing you soon, Dean,” He whispered, fading into the inky darkness of the trees.’
Sam snorted, banging his head against the window. He heard Dean chuckle lightly; he knew his brother was just itching to poke fun. Cheeks red, Sam blearily looked out the windshield and into the night. Another vision…his vision self was following the Impala. It was most likely going to try and disrupt the meeting…but why? Sam shivered, he was afraid. And pretty soon he’d find out why…

Djinn - February 18, 2008 03:06 AM (GMT)
The silence in the car was becoming unbearable. Dean looked over again, for what seemed the twentieth time, and saw Sam quietly staring out the window. His little brother’s breathe fogging the chilled glass rapidly. Tearing his eyes away, Dean focused on the road again. Bobby had mentioned a meeting among a couple of hunters…the whole thing bothered him a little. While Sam and he were pretty well endowed with the knowledge of hunting, they weren’t veterans like these other hunters. Dean gripped the wheel tensely, having seen the lights of the Rest Stop ahead.
Sam felt Dean’s questioning stare again, he knew his brother wanted to desperately help him…but even Sam knew that couldn’t happen. Sam’s head was on fire, the headache had come moments after the vision. It felt like internal hellfire, it like he’d been kicked a thousand times…it felt like---
“Wake up sleeping beauty, we’re here!” Dean whispered, nudging Sam’s shoulder.
“Yeah, yeah,” Sam growled unexpectedly.
“Looks like beauty turned into the beast, now come on,” Dean said, getting out of the car.
Sam grit his teeth, anger slicing through him at Dean’s comment. But why had he gotten mad? This was something Dean was famous for…and he’d gotten angry? Shaking his head tenderly, he drew in a breath and got out of the car. Sam paused, turning to look at the surrounding area…as if to see the vision Sam staring back, but found nothing. A small pang of hope shown in his heart, maybe he’d be okay. Sam walked up the steps and into the semi full bar, stopping next to Dean.
“Good, now that a few of you are here we can start,” Ellen said firmly to the group of six men.
“Agreed. Now as most of you know, there’s been an attack on a hunter. We don’t have all the information, but what we can say is…well,” Bobby started, before faltering.
“Well what, Bobby?” An older man wheezed.
“Well, the attacker is…another hunter,” Bobby said, shifting slightly.
“What!? Why would a hunter do that?” A younger hunter said angrily.
“We don’t know, but we have reason to believe he’s in league with a pretty powerful demon,” Ellen said, cutting in.
“Do you know what he looks like, Ellen?” Dean asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
“No, which is why Bobby and I are going to tell you hot to identify the demon influenced hunter,” Ellen said, wearing a grim smirk.
“Oh? How’s that?” Called out a hunter with a beer in his hand.
“It’s actually simple, you go up to the hunter who you suspect and say—‘Cristo’. That should make him show his true colors,” Bobby stated firmly.
The burning in Sam’s head was intense now, that word Bobby had spoken was like white lightening. He was vaguely aware his hands were shaking slightly and his nose was starting to bleed. Nobody was paying attention to him and Dean was too busy asking another question…then he saw it, the silver gun poking out of Dean’s belt. That hated weapon that had all of Dean’s love. To kill someone with it would be beautiful…
“Sam?” Dean whispered, now aware his brother’s nose was bleeding.
All the hunters turned to look at the youngest Winchester, who stood with his head down and nose bleeding freely.
“Shh, Dean! I’m trying to listen, can’t hear anything with you talking!” Sam spat, still shaking.
“Sammy, what the hell---?” Dean started, but was cut off by Sam’s sudden movement.
Sam had the silver gun in his hand and Dean gripped firmly in a neck lock. The gun glinted off the light of the bar as Sam pressed it hard against Dean’s temple. Sam’s eyes…they flickered a deadly blackish-gold.
“My, my, my…seems we have a problem. Too many hunters for me to play with,” Sam cackled, digging the gun harsher against his brother’s head.
“Sam…don’t,” Dean gasped, trying to get free.
“Hush Dean, can’t you see no one care’s what you’re saying? They all want a piece of the filth traitor who killed a fellow hunter!” Sam yelled, eyeing the crowd.
“Why, Sam?” Ellen asked, carefully inching closer.
“That’s a good question, but hey, it’s what mamma always wanted---hell on earth,” Sam laughed, shoving Dean hard into the crowd and lurching out into the cold dark night.
“SAMMY!” Dean hollered, running after his little brother.
Dean’s feet hit the dirt ground and he tried vainly to locate Sam…and failing. A dry sob escaped his mouth as he sank to the ground, head in hands. His little Sammy wouldn’t do this…no, he wouldn’t…he couldn’t! It had to be something from Hades, that’s the only thing that could want ‘Hell on earth’…but the question was: who was this demon?

Djinn - March 30, 2008 09:07 PM (GMT)
Sam was running through the trees, deaf to any feeble calls given off by Dean. He kept up a steady run as the trees broke open to a small clearing with a creek gurgling through it. Heavily breathing, Sam sank to his knees. How beautiful this gun was, how beautiful it would be to kill every goddamn hunter that dared to cross his path.
“NO! This isn’t me, what the hell’s happening!?” Sam yelled, voice straining from lack of oxygen.
“Of course it’s you, Sammy. You put that gun to Dean’s head, YOU almost killed him,” snickered a voice in his head.
“No…who are you? Why are you making me do this!?” Sam whispered, tears streaming down his face.
“Do you really want to know, Sam? ‘Cause I’ve got a feeling you already know the answer,” the voice cooed.
“I don’t know it,” Sam sobbed, not caring he must look like an idiot.
“Fine. Go look in the creek, you’ll see the answer,” the voice replied cryptically.
Sam dried his eyes, crawling on his hands and knees towards the creek to see this “answer”. He peered into the creek, but saw nothing…then that meant. Oh God. This couldn’t be right, it was him!? Sam threw himself back, sitting in the gravelly dirt surrounding the creek.
“You’re a LIAR! I would never kill a hunter! NEVER!” Sam yelled, taking fistfuls of his dark brown hair into his hands.
“But you did, Sammy. Back in Hades, you DID…and it’s time to do it again,” the voice said soothingly.
“Go to hell!” Sam snarled, releasing his hair and standing.
“Been there already, remember Sam? Hades was the epitome of Hell, but you got out,” the voice said proudly.
“Again, why are y-,” Sam started, breaking off when he heard a twig snap.
“They’re coming Sam, you think they’re going to forgive you for that last murder? For Dean’s attempted murder? No. So get your ass a car and a safe place until the next kill,” the voice said gently.
Sam’s hand clenched around the silver gun, he could hear them coming through the forest fast. How can he hear them this well? Sam shook his head, think about that later and focus on the now impending threat…a large group of angry hunters. Gritting his teeth, Sam ran from the creek. He remembered seeing a town five miles before arriving at the Rest Stop; if he could get there then he was safe for the time being.
---
Dean let out a grunt of impatience, this was taking too long. He needed to be moving faster through the forest, not creeping! They’d decided to stop at the creek, there, the hunters would decide if it was worth it to keep going. Yet, he couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened at the Rest Stop. Sam putting the gun to his head and then saying all that stuff? The other hunters were out for revenge and that meant Sammy was fair game for whoever found him first. Damn. The trees broke into the clearing where the creek was and everyone stopped. It was apparent that Sam had stopped here momentarily, but Dean refused to point it out…Sam was his responsibility, not theirs.
“Okay everyone, gather in closer,” Ellen called, a dark look in her eyes.
“Ellen, we ought to be chasing after that Winchester brat and making him pay for killing a hunter!” An older hunter said vehemently.
“Hey! That ‘Winchester brat’ is my brother you son of bitch and I swear to god if you or anyone of your buddies hurt him I’m going to-,” Dean shouted, grabbing the hunter’s shirt.
“Dean, you let him go. We’ve got more pressing matters, like what Sam said about Hell on Earth,” Bobby said calmly.
“Fine, but nobody else says anything about killing Sam around me…got it!?” Dean snapped, eyeing the group of hunters.
“Fine. All in favor of continuing the chase into the night?” Bobby said, watching as two hands went up.
“And those in favor for tomorrow?” Bobby said once more, as the rest of the group raised their hands.
“So it’s decided, we go back to the Rest Stop and wait for morning,” Ellen stated, pointing the way back.
Dean scowled, he had wanted to keep looking for Sam…but majority ruled, making what he wanted not important. It made no sense, Sam had to be possessed and he was going to figure it out and save his little brother…before Sam gets himself killed.
