Title: A Binding Contract
Description: Dean's year is up
jj'sgirl - August 25, 2007 05:11 AM (GMT)
hi all, hope you like this one. It is about what happens when Dean's year is up. And just a warning, Sam isn't able to get him out of it before his time is up, so be warned. But, I think that if you read to the end, you will be plesantly surprised. That's all I'm going to say about that. LOL. This will be a five part story (I think). Hope you all like it. Let me know what you think . Hugs. JJ
A Binding Contract
Chapter 1
Dean stared off in the distance. It was so beautiful here. The gentle lapping of the waves at his feet helped to calm his already much too frayed nerves. He ran his fingers in the sand surrounding him, feeling them slip through the small rough grains.
He wasn’t scared, per say. Though to say he was without any apprehension would be a lie…and he wasn’t about to lie to himself.
Not now anyway.
But it really didn’t make a difference what he was feeling anyway because he knew that he had entered into a binding contract. And his time was up; it was as simple as that…though he couldn’t seem to stop the slight trembling that he was doing.
After all, they’d sent a lot of evil sons of bitches back to hell over the past year. He didn’t even want to think about how many not so nice creatures were salivating at the opportunity to get their grubby hands on him.
He’d been hearing them for days now, the growls and the unearthly scratching at the door. He’d tried to be nonchalant about it, but unfortunately had been much too transparent to his little brother.
Dean sighed as he thought of Sammy. His brother was probably pissed as hell at him right now. But he knew that pissed was better than sad. And while the sadness would come, he knew his brother would be able to move on eventually, after all…
He jumped as a shadow fell atop him. His head shot up and his gaze locked on his baby brother’s face. He cursed silently, not wanting Sammy to be here…not wanting his brother to have to see this.
Dean turned and gazed back at the ocean. “Last time I saw you, you were tied to a chair,” he said, not looking at him.
“Yeah, well,” Sam said. “You think I didn’t know the date? I figured you’d pull something like this.” He sighed. “You dumbass. Next time you tie somebody up, make sure that they don’t have a knife up their sleeve first.”
Dean laughed humorlessly. “Won’t have to worry about that,” he said, trying to keep the bitterness out of his voice. “There won’t be a next time.”
Sam made a strangled gasping sound in the back of his throat. But Dean wouldn’t look at him. He refused to let his brother see the emotion he was sure on his face.
“Go home, Sam,” he said tiredly. “You shouldn’t be here.”
“My home is wherever you are,” Sam said softly. “And there’s nowhere else for me to be but at your side to the end.”
“God, you’re such a chick,” Dean said, ignoring the tears burning in the back of his own eyes.
“Damn it,” he growled. “Just leave…I don’t want you here. Do you get that, college boy. Leave. I don’t want you here.”
“Tough,” Sam said, knowing the real reason behind his brother’s angry words. “Cause after all, you’re deserting me. So I really don’t give a damn whether you want me her or not.”
Dean turned to look at him, noticing his brother’s red puffy eyes. “Damn it, Sammy,” he said. “Please…”
But his words broke off as he heard the barking, closer this time.
“Dean…” Sam said, noticing his change in posture. “What…”
Tears spilled from the eldest brother’s eyes, as he stood, despite his best efforts to control them. But it wasn’t tears for himself. They were tears for his damn stubborn brother who was going to have to watch what was going to happen. After all, he was a big brother to the very end.
“I’m sorry, Sammy,” he said. “I’m just…”
“No,” Sam growled. “Don’t you dare apologize to me. You have nothing to apologize for.”
The growing was closer now, and Dean knew this was it. Willing his frantic heartbeat to slow, he impulsively pulled his brother into a hug, squeezing him tightly. “I love you, Sammy,” he whispered.
“Dean…” Sam said, his own eyes overflowing. It was the words he’d waited so long to hear…and to hear them like this was nearly more than he could take.
“And just so you know, Sammy,” he said. “I don’t regret it for a second.”
Dean pulled back and stepped a few steps away. Pulling a gun from his waistband, he swallowed hard and pressed it to his temple. He wasn’t about to let that bitch and her damn demonic mutts take him. If he was gonna go, it was going to be on his terms.
“Nooooo,” Sam howled, crossing toward him and knocking his arm away at the second the shot was fired, causing it to go wild.
“What the hell?” Dean asked.
“Not like that,” Sam said. “You have to let them take you. You have to follow your end of the deal.”
“I won’t let her win,” Dean said. “Now move out of the damn way.”
“No,” Sam growled, holding onto the arm holding the gun.
“Sammy…”
“Damn it, Dean,” Sam said, letting go of his arm and staring directly into his brother’s eyes. “Do you trust me?”
Dean stared back at him for a long moment. “With my life,” he said, not having to hesitate in his answer.
Sam choked back a sob. “Then, trust me with your death, too…please,” he begged. “Give me the gun.
Dean nodded softly, allowing his little brother to pull the gun from his fingers. And then it was too late. He could see her now, walking along the beach toward him.
He stood silent, ignoring his little brother as he watched her approach.
“I’m impressed,” she said, circling around him like a hungry lion stalking a wounded gazelle. “Most people I have to chase down, but you came to meet me…almost takes away all my fun.”
“Don’t worry sweetheart,” he said evenly, despite his pounding heart. “I’m sure there’ll be plenty of time for your fun…after all, you’ve got eternity.”
He heard Sam’s cry of anguish at the words, but he kept his attention focused on her.
“I didn’t expect to see Sammy here,” she said, running her tongue over her lips seductively. “That does make this more fun.” She turned her gaze on the younger Winchester. “So you know what your big brother gave up for you, huh. That’s gotta hurt.”
“It’s Sam, you bitch,” Dean growled. “And it’s me you want. So leave him the hell alone.”
“Fine,” she snapped, eyes flashing red for a moment. “You wanna get down to business, so be it.”
Dean’s eyes flicked to his brother’s. “I mean it,” he said. “I don’t regret a thing.”
“How sweet,” she cooed. “But playtime’s over…now you die.”
And as his brother’s heartfelt ‘trust me’ played over again in his head, Dean’s last thought was that he wished Sammy didn’t have to watch this. I’m sorry, Sammy, he thought silently.
And then the pain hit him…pain unlike anything he had ever felt before…and he wasn’t able to form a coherent thought. All he knew was the pain.
He dropped to his knees, a scream of agony ripping from his throat, as streams of tiny rivulets of blood poured from his chest.
He saw the dogs approach, snarling at him angrily. He tensed as they approached. But instead of attacking him, he watched horrified, but transfixed, as they did nothing but lap up the blood pouring from his chest.
He felt momentarily nauseous at the very thought…but then the pain hit him again, and he was aware of nothing else but the intense agony he was in.

Wow JJ that was a very intense, very sad, and very dramatic first chapter. Poor Dean you made it so that he didn't find a way out of his deal, that is so horrible. I hope that doesn't really happen on the show because this would be too sad to really watch I think I would sit there with my hands over my eyes. LOL. You're going to make this all better though right? Find a way for Sam to brind Dean back since you had Sam tell Dean to trust him with his death as well...thats what it means right? How long are you going to make us weight for the next chapter...that isn't a nice place to leave that missy! Great first chapter hon and I look forward to more!
iluvsprntrl - August 25, 2007 12:43 PM (GMT)

Chapter 2
Sam’s cry of anguish matched his brother’s as he too fell to his knees. Tears poured down his face faster than he thought possible.
He couldn’t understand why she just wasn’t taking him. It was almost as if she were enjoying torturing him. And that was it. Sam knew he was right…the evil bitch was enjoying hurting his brother…and she was doing it for his benefit…because he was here to watch.
And he hated the fact that she was making him suffer. She was going to be able to do whatever she wanted to him in hell, why the hell couldn’t she at least let him die peacefully. But no. She had to take advantage of every chance to make him suffer.
Damn little bitch, anyway.
Sam prayed he was doing the right thing. Because his brother had wanted to end this on his terms and he hadn’t let him. He prayed with all his might that taking that gun from him had been the right decision…that he hadn’t stolen the last shred of his brother’s pride unnecessarily.
He could see Dean’s bloodied body writhing on the beach. And as his brother screamed from the torture once again, Sam couldn’t help it as everything he had eaten in the past two days came back up violently.
This was it. If this didn’t work, there would be no trying something else. If this didn’t work, there would be no Dean. Dean would be dead. And if there was no Dean, then Sam knew that there would be no Sam either. Because, like it or not, he couldn’t live without his brother either.
When his retching finally subsided, Sam pulled his knees to his chest, trembling to his very core. He’s searched so hard for a way out…for a way to save his brother. But he hadn’t been able to find a damn thing. And that knowledge alone was enough to send him into an emotional tailspin.
And knowing that he had failed, that Dean was suffering because he wasn’t strong enough to save him…especially given what his brother was willing to do for him…was more than he could bear.
And Sam knew that even if this didn’t work, there was nowhere else he’d want to be right now. After everything that his brother had done for him over the years…hell, was doing for him now…the least he could do was be here and let him know that he wasn’t alone in these final moments.
But when Dean screamed again, Sam crumpled in on himself. He wanted to bury his head in his knees, but couldn’t…wouldn’t…turn his face away.
Even as his heart was shattering at his feet, he refused to give into his weakness and look away. Dean was being impossibly brave in the face of insurmountable evil and Sam knew the least he could do was stay strong for him.
“Why did you do it?” he whispered in between heart wracking sobs. “I love you, you stupid son of a bitch.”
And as Dean gave one final whimper and fell motionless, mouth open in a silent scream, Sam fell apart completely. He pulled himself into a fetal position, right there on the beech, and sobbed openly, his chest heaving heavily as his tears fell.
And the first time in his life…cause he knew that even while at Stanford, his brother was only a phone call away…he felt really and truly alone.
Sam didn’t know how long he lay like that before he pulled himself together enough to crawl across the hot sand toward where his brother’s broken body lay. Gently cradling his brother in his arms, he buried his face in his brother’s chest and began sobbing once again.
He gently rocked his brother back and forth in his arms, silently letting his tears mix with his brother’s blood in the sand below. “I’m so sorry, Dean,” he whimpered, his head still buried in his big brother’s crimson stained shirt, as his entire world crashed down around him.
His brother was dead. Dean was dead. His big brother was dead.
This was Dean.
This was his big brother. This was the man that read him stories at bedtime. Got rid of the monsters in his closet, real or otherwise. Taught him to ride a bike…and then put Band-Aids on his bloodied knees when he fell off said bicycle. Gave him the birds and the bees talk. Gave him his first condom…and then told him that he would kick his ass if he used it, because he was too young…but then told him if he did anything to be safe and use it and that they’d deal with said ass kicking later.
The brother who gave him his first beer at the tender of age of fifteen…and then held his puking head over the toilet that night…and then somehow convinced their father not to tan his hide when he found out that his youngest had been drinking. The brother who he sparred with, who beat him at poker, and who occasionally kicked his ass.
The brother who he hunted with. The brother who had saved his life more times than he could count. The brother he loved. The brother that he knew, despite his refusal to admit it until the last possible second because he was a stubborn jerk, loved him too. This was Dean.
And Sam sobbed harder as the memories assaulted him one at a time. “God, Dean,” he said. “I’m so sorry. You’ve done so much for me and I couldn’t even…”
With a roar, he leaned back and slammed his fist into his brother’s chest. “You stupid son of a bitch. How the hell could you do this to me?” he cried desperately. “Damn you…” he said, his voice breaking as he realized that that was exactly what was happening to his brother…and his tears fell harder still at the thought of Dean damning himself for him. And he buried his face into his brother’s chest yet again.
When he finally lifted his head, hours later, all his tears finally spent, the sun had sunk and the moon was high above, casting them in silvery beauty. And Sam couldn’t help but notice how the moonlight reflected off his brother’s blood.
Standing up finally, he leaned down and gently scooped the older man into his arms and carried him back to the waiting Impala. He stumbled a few times under the weight, but didn’t fall. He wasn’t about to drop the precious bundle in his arms.
After placing his brother in the backseat gently, he slipped into the driver’s seat, feeling that the movement was instinctively wrong. He should be in the passenger seat getting informed that ‘shotgun shuts his cakehole.’ He shouldn’t be driving. This was Dean’s car. Dean should be driving her.
And the realization that he’d finally called the car by the familiar pronoun that Dean was so fond of, was nearly enough to send him into hysterics again.
Time seemed to be doing funny things, almost as if the earth had tilted on its very axis. The five minute drive to the motel seemed to take both forever and yet be over before he even realized that he had put the car into drive.
After lugging his brother’s, now cold, body into the motel room, being careful that no one saw him dragging a dead body into the room…cause that’s all he needed right then…he gently placed Dean onto the bed that he usually occupied.
He had thought briefly about giving Dean his normal bed by the door, but decided against it. “It’s time for me to take care of you for a change,” he whispered, before heading back out to the car to retrieve their first aide kit.
In his mind, Sam knew that his brother was beyond the help of first aid, but wasn’t about to let him look like that. His brother deserved better than that.
So after getting all the supplies and getting a warm washcloth from the bathroom, he set to work, carefully stripping Dean’s shredded clothes from his body.
His heart skipped a beat as he got his first glimpse of the tattered skin beneath. “Oh, Dean,” he whispered, pressing a shaky hand to his lips.
Taking a deep breath, Sam set to work, beginning to wipe the blood from his brother’s chest. After cleaning all the blood, he began to carefully stitch each wound.
He thought that it would have been easier to do this without Dean involuntarily flinching at every jab. But it wasn’t. He’d give anything to have his brother here bitching at him for being a butcher.
He worked meticulously, long into the night, taking care to suture each and every wound.
When he was done, he redressed his brother in a set of clean, dry set of clothes.
And as he stared down at his brother, he could almost pretend that Dean was only sleeping. Except Dean never slept that still…even in sleep, his brother was never completely motionless.
As he ran his fingers over his brother’s short hair, he felt his tears being to flow again. “Damn it, Dean,” he said. “This really sucks.” He laid his head next to his brother’s. “Don’t worry,” he said. “I’m gonna fix this. I promise.”
And as Sam’s tears continued to fall, he just wished that he felt as confident as he sounded.
And while sleep finally did come to him that night, it wouldn’t be until hours later. When his eyelids finally became so heavy that they couldn’t stay open, he curled up in the bed next to his brother’s cold body, as if trying to use his own body heat to warm him. Surprisingly enough, for once in his life, his sleep was nightmare free…though, the real nightmare was reality this time.
He awoke the next morning to the sound of his phone ringing. He picked it up. “Hello?” he said cautiously, not recognizing the number.
“Sam,” the voice said hesitantly. It was Bobby. “I wasn’t sure whether to come there or…” his voice trailed off.
“I need to be alone right now,” Sam said. “Don’t come.” He knew he couldn’t do what he was planning with the elder man breathing down his neck.
“Sam…are…a…how are you doing?” he asked quietly.
“How the hell do you think I am?” Sam snapped. “My brother’s in hell because of me, so I’m really not in the mood for small talk right now.” With that, he snapped the phone closed and threw it on the table.
He knew the grizzled older hunter didn’t deserve that. He knew that he was only calling because he cared.
But right then, Sam just didn’t care. And while he knew that his friend was probably gonna kick his ass for it later…or at the very least take a belt to him for it…he really didn’t give a damn about that either.
Sam glanced at the clock once before turning his gaze on his brother. It was about time. He grabbed his coat and threw it over his shoulder, not having to take the time to get dressed because he never took his clothes off the night before.
He grabbed the Impala’s car keys. “Don’t worry, Dean,” he said. “I’ll see you in a little bit.”
The phone rang as he headed out the door, but he just left it ringing on the table and didn’t answer it, knowing it was probably just Bobby calling him back. And he had more important things to do right then: he had a crossroads to find.

Chapter 3
Bobby slammed down the phone. “Damn it, Sam,” he growled. “Pick up the damn phone.”
But in his heart, he knew that Sam wasn’t just staring at the ringing phone. He was sure that the kid was already on the way out the door, preparing to do something monumentally stupid, no doubt.
“Damn that Winchester sacrificing gene to bloody hell,” he said, kicking out at a stack of books, sending them toppling to the floor.
Books had been no good anyway…not a damn cure or way out of this damndable mess anywhere to be found.
“Damn it,” he cursed again, as he slammed the phone down much harder than necessary. “Just don’t do something stupid, Sam,” he said. “Your brother wouldn’t want that…I don’t want that.”
*
Leaving his brother alone in that motel room was the hardest thing that Sam had ever done in his life. He wanted nothing more than to hold his brother in his arms and never let him go.
But he knew that if he had even the slightest chance to save his brother, then it had to be now.
As he climbed into the driver’s seat of the Impala once again, his brother’s sorrow-filled voice from all those months ago echoed in his mind saying, ‘What’s dead should stay dead.’
“Not this time,” Sam said firmly as he floored the accelerator. “Not on my watch.”
*
As Sam dropped to his knees, he couldn’t help but feel slightly uneasy about this whole process. He’d never summoned a demon before. Dean had, several times, in fact and by now Sam was pretty certain that their dad had sure as heck summoned one. But he, himself, had never even faced one alone, let alone summoned the damn thing.
“Here goes nothing,” he muttered to himself as he began to dig in the tightly packed dirt with his long fingers. But he knew that this wasn’t nothing. This was everything. This was his only chance. This was Dean’s only chance…and it scared the hell out of him.
Taking a deep breath, Sam dropped the small box into the hole he had dug. “X marks the spot,” he muttered as he poured the loose dirt into the hole.
He smiled softly as he felt a shadow fall atop him. He tried to ignore the pounding in his chest, but the roar in his ears was making it hard to think. He prayed this would work…it had to work…because the alternative was unthinkable.
“Sam Winchester,” a female voice said. “What a surprise.”
He rose up suddenly from his hunched position.
“Somethin wrong?” she said with a smile as she circled him.
“Yeah,” Sam said. “You took my brother…and I want him back.”
She burst out laughing. “Please,” she said. “I finally got myself a Winchester, you think I’m just gonna give him back…” She leaned in and ran a tongue across his lips. Sam stood perfectly still as she leaned in close. “…though you would be a delicious catch, I must admit.”
Sam swallowed hard. “I’m sure we could work something out,” he said with a sad smile.
*
Sam opened the motel room door, cautiously. He swore that he had barely breathed since leaving the crossroads. Heart pounding in his chest, he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.
Dean was still lying in the same spot, not moving.
He choked back a sob as he moved toward the bed. He prayed it worked. “Dean,” he whispered, barely audible. “Dean,” he said, a little louder.
Still his brother didn’t move. A few unbidden tears slipped from his eyes as he reached his brother. Laying a hand on his brother’s forehead, he barely had time to notice the warmth under his hand, before Dean’s eyes opened and he shot straight up in bed.
Realization dawned on Dean all at once and he emitted a strangled gasp. Taking a deep breath, he looked around the room in surprise, recognizing the locale but not understanding what was going on.
His eyes flicked down to his chest, he pulled up his shirt and fingered the delicate sutures all across his chest, knowing that his brother must have done them.
The thought of his brother sent his gaze upward, searching him out. Their eyes locked. Sam’s eyes were watering at the sight of his brother and Dean felt like a knife was stabbing him in the chest. “What did you do?” he asked quietly.
“Are you okay,” Sam asked earnestly, ignoring the question. In his mind, making sure that his brother was truly okay was all that mattered.
“What did you do?” Dean asked louder, clearly not thrilled by the fact that his little brother was dodging his question.
“I fixed it,” Sam said simply. “I fixed you.”
Suddenly Dean practically flew off the bed, shaking in rage at the thought of what his brother might have done.
All he knew was that he was dead… and now he wasn’t. And the implications of that fact were nearly more than he could take. Surely his brother wouldn’t have been stupid enough to…he’d made it part of the deal that he couldn’t…surely he didn’t…But Dean was alive and he shouldn’t be. And he knew that Sam must have…
His tumultuous thoughts broke off as he roared in outrage. Before Dean knew what was happening, he had his little brother pressed up against the wall of the motel room, a muscled forearm pressed into Sam’s neck angrily.
“What? The? Hell? Did? You? Do?” he demanded, eyes flashing in a cold fury.

JJ so not nice how the hell could you end it there? LOL That is a terrible spot to end it! What the hell did Sam do! I'm totally with Dean on this one I hate to break it to you but Dean gave up everything to save Sam so what the hell did you make Sam do to bring Dean back? You sure as hell better say that he killed that son of a bitch that way Sam won't be giving up his soul for Dean because Dean sure as hell won't survive it. JJ you come back here and you fix whatever the hell you did! Sorry I'm in one of those moods as if you couldn't tell. Watching Supernatural and it has me all hyped up because of totally cute Dean! Hmm Dean...*Drools but stops before it gets on computer* LOL. Looking forward to more hon that was a great chapter and you have me worried sick with what you've done to Sam! Chapter 4
Sam’s head hit the wall with a thud. He winced, trying to get his brother’s arm off his neck, finding it slightly difficult to breathe with his airway restricted like that. “Dean…”
“You f***ing idiot,” Dean yelled, shoving him back up against the wall furiously as Sam tried to break free of his hold. “How could you do it? You weren’t supposed to be able to make a deal…I made sure of that.”
And suddenly, Sam knew what was wrong with him. “I didn’t…make a deal, dumbass,” he choked out. “There are…other ways, you know.”
“Then what…?”
“Get the…hell off me and I’ll…tell you,” he coughed.
Dean suddenly realized what he was doing. “Sorry, Sammy,” he said, emitting a near hysterical laugh, releasing his hold and straightening the front of his brother’s shirt.
Sam looked at him warily as he rubbed his sore throat while gulping much needed oxygen into his lungs.
“What…I mean…” Dean looked into his brother’s eyes. “Are you okay? I mean, you didn’t do something stupid did you?”
Sam laughed suddenly, feeling so relieved at the knowledge that his brother was all right that he forgot all about his abused neck. “Besides hanging up on Bobby…no,” he said, with a smirk. “Which reminds me, I better call him before he kicks my ass about that one.”
“Focus, dude,” Dean said, as they sat down on the edge of the closest bed. “Now, how did you…” he paused. “I mean…I was…” He tilted his neck slightly to look at his taller little brother. “I…how?” he asked quietly, still half afraid that Sam really had done something stupid and just wasn’t admitting it.
“That demonic bitch screwed up,” he answered, smugly. “She took your soul a day early.”
Dean looked at him questioningly. “But I had my year.”
“Only three hundred and sixty-five days of it.” Sam said with a grin.
“Look, college boy,” Dean snapped. “I may not be as smart as you…but I know how many days are in a normal year.”
Sam looked down at his fingers, for a moment before grinning at his brother. “Yeah. A normal year,” he said. “But this isn’t a normal year.”
“What the hell are you sputtering about?” Dean demanded.
Sam grinned as he began to regale his brother with the tale of his meeting with the demon.
*
“Sam Winchester,” a female voice said. “What a surprise.”
He raised up suddenly from his hunched position.
“Somethin wrong,” she said with a smile as she circled him.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” she said, smiling softly. “I can’t make a deal to bring him back, much as I’d love to get my hands on you…Dean made that perfectly clear. He didn’t want you dying for him,” she said, nibbling lightly on his left earlobe.
That sounded like his stubborn bitch of a big brother. “That’s okay,” he said, trying not to gag at the demon saliva dripping down his neck. “I don’t want to deal…I just want him back”
She pulled back. “Yeah well, people in hell want ice water too, doesn’t mean they get it…just ask your brother.”
“Bitch,” Sam muttered. Then his eyes narrowed. “But you broke a binding contract, the deal is null and void.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” she said, eyes flashing. “I gave your brother one year to live. He gave up his soul to save your pitiful life.” She sneered. “All that good he’s done over the years…everybody he’s saved…everybody who is alive because of him.” She grinned then, tongue lashing out and touching him just below his ear.
He shuddered involuntarily and she laughed in delight.
“You know,” she said. “For all his bad boy image that he tried to portray…he really was one of the few truly good guys out there.” She leaned back so that she could look him in the eye. “He never should have ended up where he did…and he did it all for you. Bet that about kills you doesn’t it? But I’ll tell you what…I just love it. He’s so much fun to play with.”
Sam’s jaw clenched tightly at her words.
She grinned. “You know, no matter what we do to him, he won’t scream…and believe me, we’ve done plenty.” She began to circle him once again. “He’s strong, I’ll give him that…but those eyes of him…they can’t hide what he’s truly feeling.” She grinned, stopping directly in front of him again. “And the pain in those jade eyes of his…,” she moaned in pleasure. “…positively exquisite.”
“Give me back my brother,” Sam demanded, fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles were turning white.
“He got his year…now I got his soul. Fair is fair,” she snapped, tiring of this game.
“Except he didn’t get his year,” Sam said, matter-of-factly.
“I gave him one year…three hundred and sixty-five days that he never should have got…he’s…”
“Not exactly,” Sam said. “See…you forgot one thing,” he said smugly. “This is a leap year, bitch. He should have had one more day. You made a deal that gave him one full year to live. You broke the contract.”
She froze, her face inches from his, her eyes wide in comprehension as she realized her mistake.
“But he was here…he didn’t fight me.”
“That’s right,” Sam said.
“Fine,” she snapped, red eyes flashing in anger. “But if the deal is void, then you die.”
“Ah ah ah,” Sam said, pointing a finger at her. “I’d gladly die for my brother…” Just like his brother would do for him. They both would…which was what got them in this damn mess in the first place.
“Good,” she said, raining her hand.
“But that’s not gonna be necessary,” Sam continued smugly. “ See, Dean kept his end of the bargain. He did what you two agreed to. He let you take his soul to hell. So you can’t renig on giving him what he asked for. Fair is fair.”
She stumbled back a few steps, her cocky attitude disappearing completely. And it was at that moment that Sam got the slightest glimmer of hope that this was going to work.
“Face it, hon,” he sneered. “It was you who screwed up. If you’d waited one more day to come for him, he’d be yours. There’d be nothing I could do. But you didn’t and I want my brother back just the way he was. Right now!”
Sam could see the fear in her eyes as she realized that she had lost…fear about what would surely happen to her as punishment. And while Sam normally felt compassion for all those in trouble, he really wasn’t feeling too sympathetic toward her. She could burn in hell for all he cared. In fact, he’d be glad if she did.
It was a far cry from his normal sympathetic nature. And even if she’d hurt him, Sam knew that he probably could have let it go. After all, it was her very nature to be evil. She couldn’t help it. But this was different…she’d hurt Dean. And that was unforgivable.
“Well played.” She stumbled back a few more steps, an ashen look to her ivory skin. She swallowed hard. “You haven’t seen the last of me,” she said. “We will meet again. I guarantee it.”
“I look forward to it,” Sam said. “Me and my brother will take you on any day.”
She nodded her acquiescence. “Seems, I underestimated you,” she said, licking her lips. “I won’t make that mistake again,” she said, before disappearing into thin air.
“Bring it on, bitch,” Sam said quietly, before bringing a trembling hand to his face, finally letting his true apprehension show.
Breathing heavily he jogged toward the car. He almost couldn’t believe that it had worked…and wouldn’t until he saw his brother sitting up and bitching at him with that smart mouth of his.
*
“So that’s why you wouldn’t let me pull that trigger,” Dean said. “Because I had to let her take me. I had to surrender myself just like the deal said.”
Sam nodded. “If you’d shot yourself, then it wouldn’t have mattered if it was a day early or not.”
“She was right,” Dean said. “That was well played.”
“Thanks.”
“I’m serious, bro,” he said. “Seems like all that logic crap you learned at school might actually come in handy after all.”
“Shut up,” he said, good-naturedly. The mild insult would have ruffled his collar any other time. But today…well, today…it was like music to his ears.
“So this is really over?”
Sam nodded. “We beat it…we won.”
Dean looked down. “I don’t know, Sammy,” he said. “It just seems too…I don’t know…anti-climactic somehow.”
“Said the dumbass that tried to blow his brains out,” he said, rolling his eyes. “Face it, Dean,” he said. “For once in our miserable lives, we actually won. For once, we won just because we played by the rules. We’re the good guys…and for once the universe decided not to screw us over royally.”
“About time,” Dean quipped quietly.
Sam smiled. “I mean, shit. The law of large numbers says we had to win one sometime, right?” He looked at his brother pointedly. “And I don’t know about you, but anti-climactic seems pretty damn good to me for a change.”
“We beat it,” Dean said, beginning to smile ever so slightly as he nodded his agreement, still looking into his brother’s eyes. “This is really over.”
“It is,” he said. “And I swear to God that if you ever do something so unbelievably stupid, I will follow you into Hell myself, if for no other reason than to plant my foot up your sorry ass. Do you understand me?”
And Dean finally smiled. “Same goes for you too, little brother.”
They shared a fond smile as they fell into silence. But Dean knew that his nosy brother couldn’t keep quiet for long. And sure enough, only moments later…
Sam bit his lip nervously. “Hey Dean,” he said.
“Hmm?”
“You’ve…I mean…well,” Sam said, hesitantly. “You’ve been dead for a day and you…what did you…I mean…”
Dean seemed to know what his little brother was trying to say, despite his verbal constipation. “Meg was right when she said that we don’t really know what hell is like…that we can’t know until we’re really there…she was a bitch, but she was right.”
“Do you want to talk about it,” Sam asked quietly.
He shook his head quickly. “No,” he said. “Not now…maybe never,” he said looking up at his brother. “But definitely not now.”
Sam nodded. He wasn’t about to push. He had his brother back and that was really all that mattered at the moment.

Epilogue:
“I don’t know about you,” Dean said, a short while later. “But I’m starving. Let’s go get a beer and some pizza…it’s been a hell of a day,” he said with a smirk.
Sam groaned. “That was bad…even for you.”
Dean smirked. “What can I say, I’m back.”
Sam smiled openly then. “Yeah,” he whispered. “You are.”
“Oh come on,” Dean groaned, handing Sam his coat. “You’re not gonna make this a thing are you?”
“Well, it is kind of a big thing.”
“Please tell me we’re not gonna have to hug or anything,” Dean said, looking slightly green at the very idea.
Sam stood and took his coat. “Hugged me last night,” he said smugly.
“I so did not,” Dean said firmly.
“Did too,” Sam said. “Even said you loved me.”
Dean stopped dead in his tracks. “Never happened, Samantha.”
Sam just grinned.
“Okay,” Dean said. “Well, maybe it did…but I was dying, dude…I can’t be held responsible for what I might have said or did.”
“No way,” Sam insisted. “You’re not getting off the hook that easily.”
“So you are gonna make this a thing.”
“Of course,” Sam said.
Dean snatched the car keys from his brother’s hand. “I’ll tell you another thing,” he said, changing the subject quickly. “You better not have scratched my car or I’m so kicking your ass.”
“Don’t get your panties in a twist,” Sam said as they headed outside. “She’s…” he winced at the slip.
“What was that?”
“I said it’s fine,” Sam said quickly.
“Uh huh.”
“Just get in the damn car,” Sam said, blush tinting his cheeks, as he slipped into the passenger seat with a smile on his face.
Dean leaned on the car for a long moment, his usual bright jade eyes reflecting the horrors that he’d seen and the pain he’d experienced…the horrors that he vividly remembered…the horrors he knew would never be spoken of…before slipping into the car next to his brother, smile planted firmly back in place.
“You better keep your fingers off my radio,” he said. “Cause driver picks the music…” Dean began.
“I know, I know,” Sam said. “And shotgun shuts his cakehole,” he finished.
And for once, he was content to do just that. This was where he belonged, in the car arguing with his big brother over stupid stuff like radio stations and pizza toppings. And whatever tomorrow might bring, today all was right with the world.
“Don’t get smart with me,” he said. “Or big brother might just have to kick your ass.”
“I’m shakin,” Sam quipped.
“You aught to be,” Dean said. “Cause you know I can do it too.” He knew that whatever happened in the future wasn’t important. Only this…only now…only they…together were important.
He couldn’t believe that one day could make such a difference. The difference between life and death. The difference between hell and…well…not. The difference between being alone and having his brother at his side. And Dean knew that he would never take a single day for granted again…not when a single day could be so important.
“Hey Sammy,” he said over the music.
“Yeah.”
“I just…I mean, you wouldn’t give up on me and I…I mean, well…,” he said, feeling a warmth in his chest at the thought that his little brother hadn’t given up on him. Kind of pissed him off. He was the older brother, not the other way around. But it kind of felt nice too…not that he’d ever admit it, mind you. He wasn’t a chick, after all.
“Anytime, bro,” he said, knowing what his brother was trying to say…and knowing that he was incapable of saying the words out loud.
“Thanks, Sammy,” Dean whispered.
Sam smiled softly at the unexpected words. Maybe things were going to be different now. “Told you I was gonna take care of you for a change.”
The youngest Winchester made a mental note to call Bobby and apologize. But that was tomorrow’s problem.
Tonight, he was just gonna gorge himself on pizza and congratulatory beer with his best friend, his big brother, at his side. He figured that they they’d earned it. Everything else could wait until morning.
And as they drove off, Dean smiled softly, realizing that he was looking forward to something he never thought he’d see again: tomorrow.
“Well don’t get used to it,” Dean said, matter-of-factly. “I’m still the big brother here…and it’s my job to take care of my pain in the ass little brother.”
Then again, some things would never change…and he wouldn’t want it any other way. “Whatever…jerk,” Sam said.
“Bitch,” Dean replied good-naturedly as he floored the accelerator…just happy to be alive and have his brother…his best friend, though he’d never admit it…at his side.

That was a great ending JJ I really loved this story, it was very good! I'm glad that the brothers are doing well and acting like...well like they should be and looking forward to the future of hunting evil son of a bitches without worrying about any damn demons coming to collect their souls. Now the question is...what kind of toppings are they going to get. Nothing gross like anchovies right? That's a double yuck. LOL. Sorry couldn't help myself, I'm so picky when it comes to pizza. LOL. Sad to see this one is over already but you said you were getting another one started soon right? But wait a second...what do you mean that I need to wait to see what happens to Dean in your next story? What do you have in store in that evil brain of yours? JJ that isn't very nice! If you hurt him you better fix him. LOL. Once again great job and look forward to your next story as always!
