Title: Can I Have Another?
Description: Sequel to Sometimes Lost Is Better
Deanwinchesterfan1985 - June 24, 2007 11:24 PM (GMT)
Ok so I was having a really hard time trying to come up with a story line that I wanted to use in this sequel and my muse was just off in la la land doing whatever she felt like and didn't want to help me out. I got her back on track though thanks to Kittypride, so big thanks again, although I'm not too sure how often I will be updating. I say that a lot and I always update often so I don't know why I say that when it isn't true that I won't be updating it often. LOL. This first chapter just kind of kick starts it but since I'm still working on six others and I want to at least get one finished before my vacation...might be putting this one on hold. Might. I doubt it though, you know me over worked and under paid muse keeps me going. Maybe that is why she bugs me so much? Maybe I should pay her more? LOL. Ok so here we go off on another adventure with adventurous Sammy and a tireless Dean. LOL. Hope you like it :D

Can I Have Another?Chapter 1
“Can I have another one?” Sam asked hopefully his large brown eyes pleading and desperate from the backseat of the hot stuffy confines of the impala.
John rolled his eyes and ground his teeth together; he was getting so tired of hearing that phrase from his five year old. Why the hell had Jim bought that story for him? Why had Dean introduced him to ginger cookies? The result had been a complaining and whining Sam until John had stopped at the store and bought a large bag of them for his son.
He had told Dean specifically not to give Sam one every time he asked but Dean, being Dean, could never deny Sam anything he wanted, ginger cookies included.
It had started off innocently enough with John picking up his boys and Sam eagerly showing him the new book that the pastor had been kind enough to buy, along with a new Splinter action figure to go with the four ninja turtles he already had. John had been delighted in the fact that he wouldn’t be hearing Sam-I-Am every two seconds anymore but that had quickly changed.
The Gingerbread Man was getting just as old and he was ready to accidentally leave it someplace and not buy a new copy. Sam was having none of it; he slept with the damn thing, one arm wrapped around it as if it were a teddy bear.
It would seem as if it had grown on Sam as it didn’t leave his side. He looked at the pictures while eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner, had Dean read it half a dozen times during story time, he would mumble the familiar words from the bathroom as he did his business book in hand, and when Dean was brave enough to give Sam a bath, Sam would only agree if the Gingerbread Man from the story could watch.
Dean had taken up the habit of propping the book up against the toilet so that the ginger cookie with gumdrops for eyes could watch Sam have the time of his life in the bathtub, while Dean got thoroughly soaked.
After bath time Sam would allow Dean to get him dressed and then hurried to the small table in hopes for a ginger cookie before bedtime. Dean always gave him one and one only before ushering him off to bed. There he would have to read the book another two or three times while Sam giggled nonstop through the whole story, before exhausted the five year old would fall asleep. The next morning the whole process would start all over again, and it was grinding on John’s nerves.
“Dean can I have another one?” Sam begged once more as he reached a chubby hand out for the treat. It was going on lunchtime and John had yet to stop after being on the road at six in the morning. He had caught wind of a new hunt and it sounded urgent, well according to Joshua it did anyway. Everyone else was tied up in their own hunts so John had agreed to check it out.
He had bundled up an exhausted Dean, and still snoozing Sam into the car by quarter to six, and after doing a quick sweep of the motel room they had been staying in to make sure nothing important was left behind, they had left.
Dean had fallen asleep again within the first hour of the drive; Sam hadn’t stirred until almost nine. He had blinked in confusion at being in the car already but had happily pulled out The Gingerbread Man and entertained himself with it until Dean had woken at quarter to eleven. Dean had been up half the night getting things ready for their early check out, so John hadn’t bothered to wake him.
Now it was eleven thirty and Sam was complaining of hunger pains, but being as they were in the middle of nowhere they didn’t have a chance to stop for anything. Dean had pulled out the large bag of ginger cookies and they had been keeping Sam quiet, well semi quiet anyway, until he wanted another one.
“Sammy you’ve already had six.” Dean tried to reason with his kid brother pulling out another ginger cookie anyway. He didn’t blame Sam for being hungry; his own stomach was protesting the long break between meals.
“I’m still hungry.” Sam pouted sticking out his bottom lip and making his eyes spread larger in hopes that it would make Dean cave. It worked; he was rewarded with the small ginger cookie, which instantly found its way into his mouth. He crunched it louder than necessary looking extremely pleased with the tasty treat. “I’m thirsty.”
John shot a glance to Dean who was looking a little lost on that request, dark hazel turned to meet his own dark brown and he gestured with a quick flick of his head to the backseat. “There are some water bottles under the seat back there Dean.”
Dean managed to maneuver over the bench and to the backseat where Sam was bouncing eagerly up and down his hands groping out for the water he so desperately craved. Dean’s quest was a short one and he came up triumphant with the water bottle in hand.
He twisted off the cap and handed it to his brother, who took one sip and spit it right back out showering the back of John’s head with a mixture of warm bottled water and spit. Not to mention the gingersnap cookie chunks that had been residing in his mouth.
Dean tried his hardest to keep a straight face as one of John’s hands flew up to feel the back of his head before shooting his youngest a dirty look from the review mirror. “Sam why did you do that?”
“It was yucky.” Sam announced not at all ashamed of his actions. He hadn’t missed the torn look somewhere between amused and shocked that had crossed Dean’s face as Dean took the water bottle back and gulped down a few swallows himself.
“Well you said you were thirsty and that is all we have until we stop for lunch.” John growled with no real heat behind the words. He knew being in the car wasn’t fun for his boys and there was no way to really keep any drinks cool so of course the water would be warm and unpleasant on a rapidly heating day such as today.
“I don’t want it.” Sam crossed his arms across his chest stubbornly, his face twisted into a scowl. His dark locks were hiding his stubborn brown eyes. Dean did chuckle at that, Sam looked so much like John when he was angry.
“Well go thirsty then.” John muttered flipping on the radio and searching for something decent that he would enjoy listening to. He missed the look of disgust that crossed Dean’s face as he settled on some old country station, his gaze too busy on the road.
Dean capped the water bottle and set it onto the seat between the two of them, before leaning back against the seat and closing his eyes he was exhausted from the constant drive and trying to keep Sammy entertained. He felt a finger poke him in the shoulder, gently at first but becoming increasingly more insistent as the seconds passed.
He opened one eye slowly to see Sam smiling at him, his hand held out, an eager look on his face. “What is it Sammy?”
“Can I have another?”

oh my God Candace, that was so funny. the one i feel pity for is poor Dean, that kid is a handful.
anyway, i'm glad that you decided to start a sequel, don't know how you do it.
:)
lucy b - June 25, 2007 12:11 AM (GMT)

Little Sammy really does love his cookie's.....he keeps asking for more. :lol2

Fantastic start Candace :cheer
Kezzie - June 25, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
I'm blaming you for my still being awake at 2am! I would have been asleep a few mins earlier if I hadn't raced over here as fast as my inet would allow me from the "Sometimes Lost Is Better" thread to read these. Love it!
Especially this line
"he would mumble the familiar words from the bathroom as he did his business book in hand" :rotfl
kittypride - June 25, 2007 01:16 AM (GMT)
Yippie!!!!!! *Continues to jump up and down in excitement*. Wow, I have been doing that a lot today.. Anyways, the sequel is here!!!! It's amazing how fast you come up with these girl. Your muse sure likes to keep you going. Anyways, I thought this whole first chapter was freaken hilarious. Sam bugging Dean for the cookies, Sam spitting the warm water all over the back of John's head, and Sam waking Dean up at the end asking Dean for yet another cookie.. You say he already had six ...... well now seven? Gee, if Sammy keeps eating all these sweets, he is going to be spitting more than just water out of his mouth. He is going to get car sick. *Shudders due to past memories*. That is what always happened to me. Car sickness sucks.
Anyways, fantastic start to this story. I am glad to see it up already. By the way, I told ya the title was catchy. :D.
Keep up the great work hun. ;).

:cheer :cheer :cheer Yeah, thanks to your over active muse you have started the sequel Candace!!! :cheer :cheer :cheer I can't tell you how pleased I was to log on and find this!!!!
Brilliant start, no wonder John wants to lose 'The Gingerbread Man' book, and it won't be long before Dean is sick of it too!!! LMAO that Dean introduced Sam to ginger cookies, he will make himself sick if he eats too many of them - but there again, ginger is meant to settle the stomach, so maybe not!!! :lmao So funny how Sam spat out the warm water, not so funny for John that Sam's spit hit his head!!! Unless they stop, Sam will just have to put up with the funny taste of the water, he will really need a drink with all the cookies he is munching!!! :)

Hey guys sorry that it has been so long between updates for this one. I was trying to find the perfect...well shall I say new annoyance of Sam's and it wasn't exactly the easiest thing to find. Although I did have a lot of fun with it and really enjoyed writing it. Hope everyone enjoys it as well and thanks for the great reviews for this one already, I'm glad that everyone is enjoying it already and thought the last chapter was so funny. Made me smile that everyone thought that cute little Sammy was so funny. Thanks guys.
--Candace
Kajal--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter. It was a lot of fun. I'm glad that you thought it was so funny. I get so hesitant with writing anything I think is funny because I would feel so dumb if I was the only who thought it was but I'm glad you got a kick out of it as well. Dean sure has his hands full with Sam doesn't he? You don't know how I do it huh? Well to be honest with you...neither do I. LOL. I just go as my muse does I guess. Thanks for the review!
Lucy--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter and thought it was funny. That makes me happy becuase I get so nervous with writing funny things thinking I will be the only one that will think it is funny and everyone else will just be like  LOL. I'm glad that you were so excited to see the sequel to this one. Hope you enjoy this next part. Thanks for the review!
Kerri--You are crazy being awake at 2am to read, dude I'm gone by like 12 usually. LOL. Although last night I didn't go to bed until after 1 which was really bad since I had to get up kind of early this morning. I was busy watching a movie and didn't want to stop watching it because I was so into it. A scary one then couldn't go upstairs because it was dark up there so I had to turn on all the lights. I'm sure you wanted to know that didn't you. LOL. Sorry I'm kind of all hyper and I don't even know why, I didn't oh wait...I did have sugar today. LOL. Peanut M&M's. LOL Those things are so good! Probably why I'm hyper now though. Very bad for me. I'm glad that you enjoyed that line. I had fun with the whole how far can I take this concept. Thanks for the review!
Kittypride--I'm glad that you were so excited to see the sequel up and going. Like I said it was because I went to read your review for Sometimes Lost Is Better that my muse got inspired for this one so take a bow and pat yourself on the back. Ok that's enough. LOL. :lol2 Sorry I'm so freaking hyper! LOL. No more chocolate for me, no matter how tempting it might be. I swear I eat a small bag of peanut M&M's and I'm all hyper for the rest of the night. I suppose it is better than being worn out though isn't it? I'm glad that you enjoyed the first chapter and that you got a kick out of Sam spitting the water on the back of John's head. I really liked that part too. LOL. Hope you enjoy this next one. Thanks for the review!
Steff--I'm glad that you were so excited to see the sequel up and going. It made me so happy to see so many people excited about this already. I'm glad you are looking forward to an active Sammy. You never know what kind of adventures they can get into can you? Thanks for the review!
Holly--I'm glad that you were so happy to see the sequel up. I'm also glad that you enjoyed the humor in the last one. It always makes me nervous, making me think I am the only one that will find it funny. Hope you enjoy this next one. Thanks for the review!
Pinkphoenix--I'm glad to see that you were so excited about the sequel. Kind of a spur of the moment kind of thing. But that is the way I usually work, muse likes it that way I suppose. I'm glad that you enjoyed the humor in the last chapter...always get a little nervous with those but everyone seemed to get a kick out of it as well. Hope you enjoy this next one. Thanks for the review!
Sarah--I'm so happy that you were so excited to see that I started the sequel. I was so happy to see that everyone was so excited for it, and enjoyed the first chapter. I had fun with it, and I know it took me a long time to get chapter two up but with everything else and work and all that other crap I didn't have time to find the right thing to make this next chapter click for me. I found it tonight though. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I'm glad that you enjoyed the part where Sam spat the water on John's head. I had a lot of fun with that. Thanks for the review!
Sparkle07-- Always excited to hear from someone new, glad you decided to check this one out. I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter I had a lot of fun with it. I'm glad that you are enjoying the humor in this one already. I hope you continue to enjoy it. Thanks for the review!
Jenn--Man I didn't surprise you that I started this one already? Damn and I was trying to be so subtle. LOL. Couldn't help it you know my muse totally out of control and pushing me to the max...I think she wants a raise! LOL. I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter so much I had a lot of fun with it. Sorry that it took so long just couldn't find the right part for this next chapter but I found it tonight so I was very happy. Hope you like it. Thanks for the review!
Alex--LOL. It doesn't matter how many times I see that little skippy guy dancing around because you're out of school it always makes me smile. I'm glad that you were happy to see that I started the sequel already and I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter. Yeah poor John, he sure has his hands full with both his boys doesn't he? Hope you continue to enjoy it. Thanks for the review!
Rookie--I'm always excited to hear from a new reader I'm glad that you have been enjoying this story so far. Not that it is very long but I'm glad that you like it. Yeah Sam is a handful, poor Dean sure can't do anything can he. Not while Sam is around anyway. Hope you enjoy this next part. Thanks for the review!
Chapter 2
Dean groaned reaching into the bag for another cookie, Sam was bouncing up and down next to him, his hand opening and closing again in anticipation. He didn’t stop until the small ginger cookie was place in his palm and happily being crunched between his shiny white baby teeth.
“That’s enough for now Sammy.” Dean said rolling the top of the bag and placing it on the floor beside his feet. He leaned back, closing his eyes once more as Sam’s chewing stopped and the sound of Sam gulping louder than necessary reached his ears.
He didn’t bother to open his eyes though, he knew it would be a while before they reached the next town, and stopped for lunch. The best way to avoid Sam’s pressing drive for attention was to just ignore him. It was a tactic he didn’t try very often as Sam would often throw a temper tantrum but right now he didn’t care. Sam had plenty of books to keep him busy, especially his new one.
Sam seemed to get the point this time, Dean wasn’t going to give him anymore cookies so he might as well find some way to entertain himself. Swinging his legs back and forth his feet contacted the back of John’s seat, gently pressing and releasing the seat.
John grit his teeth and tightened the steering wheel, his knuckles turning a ghostly white as his nerves started to dance. Sam wasn’t being annoying on purpose, but with what little sleep he had gotten the night before he was on edge and ready to snap at any moment.
Sam however wasn’t done being annoying. “Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea. And frolicked in the autumn mist…”
John had had enough. “Sam!”
Sam pouted, sticking his bottom lip out and allowing his eyes to water. John groaned and tried to avoid his son’s gaze from the rearview mirror. Sam kicked the seat harder then before now that his feelings had been hurt. He didn’t see Dean’s lips twitching, but John did.
“It’s not funny Dean.” John said angrily to his oldest.
“I didn’t say anything.” Dean replied lazily not bothering to open his eyes.
“Were you the one that taught him that damn song?” John demanded keeping his eyes on the long stretch of road.
Dean shook his head and did start to laugh at this. “Didn’t have to. He memorized it.”
“Well I blame you for that you gave him the damn tape.” John growled while Sam looked between the two of them, a look of puzzlement on his features.
“You gave it to me first.” Dean reasoned watching as a pink tint covered John’s cheeks.
Sam found this as a cue to keep singing. “Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea…”
John deliberately turned up the music that had been playing softly from the speakers, drowning out Sam’s rendition of his favorite song. He had been so happy when the tape player that Sam had been using to listen to that song over and over again had eaten the tape. He had pretended he didn’t know how to fix it and had forbidden Dean to fix it for Sam.
The tape had ended up in the garbage a while ago but that didn’t mean that Sam had forgotten the words to it. John had been hoping that Sam had gotten over his Puff the magic dragon phase. It had been ten times worse than Dean’s and Sam had been twice as annoying with it.
He hadn’t sung it or even thought about it for so long that John had been relaxed about it. Now it looked like the damn thing was back in full force.
Determined to sing over John’s music Sam’s voice screeched over the music, slightly off key, shouting in Dean’s ear and making John’s head pound. “Oh Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called…what’s the name again Dean?” Sam asked turning to Dean.
Dean shrugged not willing to reveal the name to his brother. Sam had always had trouble with that part of the song, so not knowing the answer he would make up towns of his own. Filling the gap with anything and everything that came to his mind. This time was no different.
“Oh Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea. And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called cherry tree.”
“A land called cherry tree? Where the hell did you come up with that?”
“Dean! Watch your mouth!” John snapped from the front seat giving Dean a firm glare.
“I like cherries.” Sam pouted also glaring at his brother. His arms crossed over his chest stubbornly.
“Sam can’t you sing something else?” Dean pleaded not wanting to listen to anymore of Sam’s version of Puff the magic dragon.
“Nope!” Sam shook his head vigorously back and forth, his long brown locks waving around furiously. “I like this song.”
“You don’t even know the right words.” Dean tried to reason.
“So.” Sam said and Dean gave up. So what if Sam didn’t know the right words? It wasn’t as if that would ever, or ever had stopped his brother before. When Sam didn’t know a certain word, something too big for him he would make things up. Something that sounded good to his ears even though it made no sense to anyone else. Therefore, he and John were forced to endure Sam’s inventive form of an already screwy song.
“Can I have a cookie?” Sam asked holding out his hand expectantly.
“I’ll make you a deal Sammy. If you stop singing I will give you another cookie. Deal?” Dean unfolded the top of the bag and pulled out a cookie. Sam nodded agreeably and accepted the treat. He chewed it, swallowed and cleared his throat.
“Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea…”
“Sam you promised to stop singing if I gave you a cookie.”
“I did. Now give me another.”
Dean sighed and looked to John, not missing how John’s lips were twitching into a smile, obviously finding Sam’s negotiation very funny. Dean smiled too; it was so nice to see John smile every once in a while. If it took Sam being annoying and Dean being on the receiving end of that he would deal with it. He reluctantly pulled out another cookie and handed it to his anxiously awaiting brother.

That last part was so cute, sad though that Dean obviously thought his Dad didn't smile very often, but at least an annoying Sammy getting one over on Dean caused his Dad merriment! :lmao
"Puff the Magic Dragon" - where did you dig that up from, I remember it well, and after a while it does become annoying!!! :rotfl
Loved John's tolerance though at Sammy kicking at the back of his seat, surprised he didn't react more angrily!!! ;)
But little Sammy is so cute, he gets away with so much! :D
Great chapter Candace, loved it :)

:lol2 oh my word, I think I have a headache forming just thinking about that song haha! I can't think of the tune of Puff right now but it's just as well otherwise I have the feeling it'd be stuck in my head all day - then I'd blame Sam for it! He is adorable though and hey he's one smart kid...pretty good at negotiations. Clearly he picks up on things from his daddy already. THIS is why it's dangerous to let children overhear conversations. You think it's safe, especially in Johns work doing research and fraud...and before you know it, little 5yr olds are mouthing off what they heard to some stranger. Hmm I'm getting carried away now hehe. Back to the story though, it made me laugh!
Also the whole 2am thing? I think you'll find my reason is actually better than yours. You see I was tired (if I remember correctly) however I opened up tons of fanfics and got addicted to reading them then landed on the jensen eye candy page and padalickin good page. That was me done for hours! You however are little Ms Hyper! :supes (<- I just imagined Sammy being hyper and thinking he was a superhero so I felt this smiley was appropriate. Maybe I'm the hyper one again now...I should go)
Usagy - June 29, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
 aaahhhhhh it really is nice to see John smile, and interact with dean and sam, in ways that has nothing to do with hunting......Though I give it to him, John is a strong man, i think i would of hauled sammy out of the car if he kept singing.....
“Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea…”
AARRRGGGHHHHH NOW ITS STUCK IN MY HEAD :bang THANKS A LOT CANDACE........ :P
“Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea…”
AAAARRGGGHHHH SERIOULSY I CANT STOP SINGING IT....THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY LONG DAY
“Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea…”

I can't imagine what I would do in John or Dean's place. Sam's negotiating was hilarious.
I can't wait for more.

Damn, I've got Puff the magic dragon on the brain now! Hilarious though!
I'm so glad you did a sequel! I missed five year old Sammy. I'm really happy now!
Awww Sammy is so cute! Annoying, but cute!
Love it!

That was hilarious! Sammy's a quick thinker, isn't he?
At least he didn't sing "The Song That Never Ends". That would be worse!
And John and Dean laughing at each other when Sam got the better of them. Too cute! :rotfl

:rotfl Oh gosh can you imagine!? One part of that image makes me crack up, just seeing this little messy haired boy sitting in his car seat. Head nodding from side to side, bangs falling over his eyes, toy bouncing on his knee, legs bouncing as he sang...taking deep breaths as he starts it all over again.
The other part of me is in pain imagining the trauma of sitting through that for hours!! :lol2

COOKIES....YUM....COOKIES
Sam's like the human version of the cookie monster. Ah *sigh* and just yesterday it was Sam I am now its gingerbread man. He really gets side tracked easily.

I never heard that song before~~ *yeah because I don't live in US~* but lil' Sammy~~ he's pure genius!:D

Hey guys I'm glad everyone liked Sam's new little annoyance. LOL. I really know how to find a way to make him so annoying don't I? Oh but he's cute. LOL. Ok so here is the next one for you and the last one until probably next Monday or Tuesday. Maybe if not the following Tuesday which would be the seventeeth more than likely. Not really all that funny, but brotherly moment in there. ;) Thanks for all the great reviews!
--Candace
Holly--I'm glad you enjoyed Sam's singing. LOL. I had a kick with that, although I actually had to look up Puff the magic dragon and do my homework on it, never actually listened to it before. LOL. Sam's a tricky little fellow isn't he? LOL. I'm glad you got a kick out of the last chapter. Thanks for the review!
Pinkphoenix--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter and thought it was funny. Sam can take anything and wear it out to, well beyond an irritation. LOL. Glad you enjoyed it so much though. Thanks for the review!
Lucy--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter and found little Sam so funny. He's cute I really enjoy writing him. He is a clever little devil isn't he, manipulating his brother to get what he wants. LOL. I'll sing until you give me what I want then I'll sing again basically isn't it? LOL. Hope you enjoy this next one. Thanks for the review!
Sarah--Where did I dig Puff the magic dragon up from? Good question I have no idea. I never listened to it as a kid although I remember one of my friends from high school telling me that she used to listen to it a lot. I was just going over some really annoying kids songs that I could put in and that one popped into my head. Seemed to work for Sam don't you think? LOL. Little Sam is so cute I'm surprised he doesn't get away with murder. I'm sure that John was annoyed with him but kept his temper in check because car rides are hard for kids, especially if they are in there forever and ever like Sam and Dean are so I'm sure he understands why Sam is acting the way he his. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
Kerri--Well I'm glad you'd blame Sam and not me, LOL Alex is blaming me. As if it is my fault it got stuck in her head. I only wrote it. LOL. He is a smart kid, a tricky little booger isn't he? He always seems to get what he wants, Dean can never deny him anything. LOL. Kids do pick up on anything and everything, they admire their parents and want to be like them so they do everything they do. LOL. You got to love them though, they make you laugh. I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter thanks for the review!
Alex--Did you ever get Puff out of your head? LOL That made me laugh when I saw that. I figured it would probably get stuck in heads, pretty catchy line isn't it? LOL. I'm glad that you were happy to see John interacting with his kids in a way that had nothing to do with hunting. It is nice to see him act as a dad every once in a while isn't it? Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
Jenn--I'll give it to John and Dean they have a hell of a lot more patience than I do. LOL. I don't know if I would be able to handle somebody singing Puff over and over and over again. Especially just that line. That would drive me crazy. LOL. I'm glad that you enjoyed Sam's negotiating he is a clever little booger isn't he? Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
Katie--Ha ha I have the feeling that you weren't the only one to get Puff stuck on the brain. LOL. I think you and Alex should start a club or something. LOL. Sorry about that had to find something new and very annoying that Sam could latch onto. That song just kind of popped up, even though I've never heard it before. LOL. I actually had to dig around and find it. I'm glad that you have been enjoying the sequel so far, I missed little Sammy too. He's a lot of fun to write. Thanks for the review!
Maxandkiz--That's true Sam could have done something worse like 'The song that never ends' now that song would get on my nerves and fast. Although when we were kids we liked to sing that song a lot, would drive my mom nuts because we would never stop singing it. LOL. Hmm...more ideas coming up here. LOL. I'm glad that you enjoyed Sam's negotiating. He usually ends up getting what he wants doesn't he? LOL. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
Steff--Sam does get easily side tracked doesn't he? As long as he has something to occupy him, I think he's happy. LOL. Yeah him and those cookies, he is a little cookie monster, but he is cute so we will let that one slide. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter. Thanks for the review!
Rookie--I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter. I had never heard Puff the magic dragon until I wrote the last chapter. Wanted to see how it went. Let me tell you it gets really annoying after the second time. LOL. Sam is a clever little guy though isn't he? LOL. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the review!
Chapter 3
It was going on four before John stopped at a motel for the night, Sam was now dozing happily his tummy full of ginger cookies and cheeseburger. Sam’s head rested against Dean’s shoulder while Dean also dozed, his head resting against the bench, his head tilted to one side, his mouth slightly open.
John left his boys to sleep while he checked them into the motel, booking them for a week with the possibility of an earlier check out. He would stay with them for tonight and head out first thing in the morning. He would gather up food rations to last them for the week a little later, but first he had to get them settled.
Dean stirred as John opened up the car door, opening both his eyes lazily. “Come on Dean time to head in.”
Dean gently shook his brother, who groaned and slapped his hands away, mumbling in his sleep about something that Dean couldn’t quite make out. “Come on Sammy, time to head in.” Dean urged shaking his brother again, more firmly this time.
Sam shook his head slightly and buried it further into Dean’s shoulder, obviously unwilling to leave the land where his dreams lived just yet. John reappeared next to Dean’s door and peered inside, sighing as he saw Dean’s dilemma. “Sam.”
Sam moaned and shifted making sure his eyes stayed covered so he could drift back off to sleep. John gestured for Dean to slide out, which he did making Sam slide down to rest on the seat. John reached over and retrieved Sam; gently holding him in his arms while Dean grabbed the ginger cookies and both boys’ backpacks.
Sam snuggled into John’s shoulder, burying his face in security that was his father, taking in the soft scents that he had come to recognize with John, crappy motel soap, old leather, aftershave, and the soft scent of deodorant. He let John carry him in and place him on one of the beds, where he snuggled into the soft pillow and soon began to doze again.
“He’s worn out.” John chuckled placing his duffel down on the other bed while Dean set their backpacks on the floor next to the old TV. Dean smiled and walked up to his brother, brushing the bangs out of Sammy’s eyes and covering him with the small Mickey Mouse blanket that Sam found so comforting.
John watched from a distance, seeing no reason to interfere with Dean’s quiet movements, making sure his brother was comfortable before moving on to whatever else needed to be done. John stepped out to retrieve the boys’ duffel as Dean went about placing various items that Sam would want when he woke up in a place where Sam could find them easily.
Between the two of them it didn’t take long to get settled, Dean was soon resting on John’s bed, flipping through the TV channels with the sound on low, while Sam continued to sleep on the next bed. John told Dean he was going to get some food for them and would be back soon. Dean nodded and continued to flip through the channels hoping to find something halfway decent on. Satisfied that both his boys would be fine John left.
Dean wandered into the bathroom, humming something under his breath without really thinking about it. Sam was still sleeping, John had been gone for almost half an hour and there was a good chance he wouldn’t return for another half hour.
After finishing what he had to Dean flushed and walked to the sink still humming, this time starting to add the words along with the tune. “…And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.” He stopped when he realized exactly what it was he was singing.
Dean tried desperately to think of something else, anything else to get his mind off of that song, the song that Sam loved so much. His mind was still desperately searching as he opened the door to find Sam sitting on the floor, a coloring book and scattered crayons around him, coloring what looked like a cow in his farm animals coloring book.
The cow had purple spots, a pink body, blue utter, yellow hooves, red eyes, and Sam was currently working on the tail, which he had selected to be orange. “Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea. And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.”
‘Shit. Was I really singing it that loud?’ Dean wondered as he wandered over to his brother, looking down at Sam’s work. “Hey Sammy. What you doing?”
“Coloring, want to color too Dean?” Sam asked offering up the blue crayon and scooting over allowing Dean access to the other side of the coloring book, the picture happened to be a cat playing with some yarn. Dean frowned; coloring kittens wasn’t exactly his cup of tea.
“You almost done with that picture Sammy? Maybe I’ll color the next one with you.”
Delighted at this Sam dropped his crayon, leaving the cow’s tail only halfway done and turned the page. One side revealed a couple of large pigs lying around in the mud, and the other a dog chasing after a small giggling boy with bangs that hung in his eyes.
“You want to color this one Dean?” Sam asked selecting his black crayon and going over the two pigs’ squiggly tails.
“That’s fine Sam.” Dean dropped onto the floor beside his brother, their shoulders brushing together. Sam abandoned his black crayon and reached for the red so he could color the pigs’ snouts. Dean selected a green and began to color the boy’s shirt, the small child reminding him a lot of Sam whenever they went to Bobby’s. Sam loved to play with the dogs there.
Sam began to hum ‘Puff, the magic dragon’ under his breath as he colored, Dean tried to block it out but found it harder and harder to do, as the further into the song Sam got, the louder Sam would hum it. “Sammy, can you not hum that?”
“Can I sing it?”
“No.”
Sam shook his head then and returned to coloring. “Then I have to hum it.”
“Why?” Dean grabbed the brown crayon and began to color the small boy’s locks before selecting the orange and brushing it lightly against the coloring book, taking great care to stay in the lines, this was his brother he was coloring. Well something that was similar to his brother anyway.
“Because I like it.”
“Sam why do you like it? You don’t even know the words.” Dean dropped the crayon and sat back giving his brother a hard stare.
Sam looked at him with a look that clearly told Dean that he should know the answer to this himself. “Because you gave it to me Dean.” Sam then returned to coloring, humming the familiar song once again, starting over at the beginning.
Dean felt as if he had been bitch slapped for a moment before rejoining his brother, humming along before adding the words, allowing Sam to repeat them back to him. The two were found like that twenty minutes later, both sprawled out on the floor, coloring book filled with all kinds of pretty colors, and ‘Puff, the magic dragon’ being sang by both boys. Sam had officially memorized it. John sighed, well at least he was leaving in the morning, he had no doubts that Dean would be regretting teaching the words to Sam before too long. Sam had the habit of wearing everything out.

Aaaahh, so cute and fluffy! :) I think Dean will regret teaching Sam all the words to "Puff the Magic Dragon" but if he is going to sing it, he might as well use the right words!!!
So adorable Sam wanting Dean to colour with him, but Dean being Dean didn't want to colour in a girly picture!!!
With John arriving back to both of them singing I bet he's glad he's off on a hunt in the morning! :P
Great chapter Candace, and have a fantastic vacation! Perhaps you can sing "Puff the Magic Dragon" during your journey!!!! :rotfl

jennmbc - July 3, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Dean singing the song was too funny!
the fact that Sam liked it because Dean gave it to him was also pretty good. Like the reaction you gave Dean.
I can't wait for more. Well I guess I can since this isn't going to be updated till you get back. Which is ok by me!
number13 - July 3, 2007 08:30 PM (GMT)
Awwww! Little Dean and Sam singing together.... wait what am I saying? Dean! Stop encouraging the little mite to sing annoying songs!
Puff, the magic dragon NOOOOOOO! STOOOOOOP! Well, I did manage to get it out of my head the first time by just droning my newest CD - Wicked - into my brain over and over again. It worked but then I kept singing those songs in the shops today.
I liked how Sam colours his pictures in all different colours from what they are supposed to be. It was really nice that Dean decided to help him too! And Sam snuggling into Dean in the car - cute!

 How adorable is Sam cuddling up to his daddy? Don't get me wrong, I love him being with Dean and the fact he loves the song because Dean gave it to him is just...well such a perfect reason! BUT I enjoy seeing him interact with his daddy too. And can I just say I cracked up at the fact that he didn't open his eyes so that he could go back to sleep. I'm 20 and I still do that when my mum comes in the room or I'm in the car, I pretend I'm still fast asleep even if I'm obviously not :lol2
Have a fab vacation! x

Hey guys I'm back! Did you miss me? J/K. Wow it is a long road trip down to St. George, we had a blast though it was a lot of fun. I will be home for a couple days and all of Wednesday morning before we leave early Wednesday afternoon. I got a couple chapters done this weekend one for this one and one for another but not much. Hope everyone enjoys it. Thanks for the reviews!
--Candace
Sarah--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter so much. I know that this next one is kind of a little repeat of what I did at the end of Sometimes Lost Is Better, but I had a reason for doing it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I actually did sing Puff for Rose, she got a kick out of it. LOL. Thanks for the review!
Pinkphoenix--I'm glad that you are enjoying my little Sammy, I have so much fun with it and I really enjoy writing him. Had a great time on the first part of my vacation. Hope you enjoy this next bit too. Thanks for the review!
Holly--Yeah Dean got it stuck in his head too, poor little fellow. LOL. I'm glad that you enjoyed the two of them singing and coloring together. It was a lot of fun. I'm also glad you enjoyed Dean tucking Sam in, he is so cute. Thanks for the review!
Jenn--I'm glad that you enjoyed the bit where Dean was singing the song too, I had it stuck in my head on the way back from St. George today and Rose and I both ended up singing it. LOL. I feel bad for her. LOL. I'm glad that you enjoyed Dean's reaction when you found out why Sam liked it so much. Hope you enjoy this next one too. Thanks for the review!
Katie--I'm glad that you enjoyed the last chapter, I had a lot of fun with it. Oh you don't want Sam and Dean singing together? How sad. LOL. So you got Wicked stuck in your head huh? LOL. I usually get classic rock stuck in my head and hum that while I'm at work. It is usually AC/DC, or Boston. So yeah it is pretty bad sometimes. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed Sam and Dean coloring together, I had fun with that. Thanks for the review!
Lucy--I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter I had a lot of fun with it. Yeah those two are so cute I'm glad you liked where they were coloring together I had fun with it. And the part where Dean had the song stuck in his head and was singing it...poor guy should have seen it coming. LOL. Hope you enjoy the next bit. Thanks for the review!
Kerri--I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter. I'm glad you enjoyed the little cuddling bit Sam did with John. It is nice to see him be a father every once in a while isn't it? I do the whole pretend to sleep thing too, I'm almost 22 but my mom doesn't need to come get me up. I get up on my own, unless I want to be left alone, I pretend I'm taking a nap. LOL. Hope you enjoy this next bit. Thanks for the review!
Alex--Man I think your brothers will track me down and kill me if you sing that on your roadtrip. LOL. Although I did sing it for Rose and eventually we just started singing it together. LOL. I hope you have a good time on your roadtrip and I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter. Thanks for the review!
Claire--Only three pages huh? Well you weren't that many chapters behind I haven't gotten that far into this story yet but I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm always happy to hear from you. I had a great time with my friend down in St. George thanks, although we passed like three fires on the way down there, and the biggest fire spread, it was really bad so we had to take back roads to get back home today. It's ok though. I'm glad that you are getting a kick out of Sam's new little annoyance. LOL. He is such a cute little bugger. LOL. Thanks for the review!
Chapter 4
“Dean can we read?” Sam asked after supper later that night. He was holding The Gingerbread Man close to his chest, squeezing it as if it were a cuddly teddy bear.
Dean looked up from his book of night creatures and sighed, John was in the bathroom taking a shower, the long drive having worn him out and the upcoming hunt did nothing to lighten his mood. If anyone was going to read to Sam now it would have to be Dean.
“Dean can we read?” Sam repeated climbing up on the bed next to his brother slapping the book down on Dean’s lap and pushing Dean’s book away roughly with his hand.
“Sam that isn’t very nice.” Dean said picking up Sam’s picture book with distaste and looking at the cover. He was getting so tired of reading about the pudgy old lady and her husband, both were dumb and neither could shut the stupid front door so the gingerbread man escaped every single time.
“I want you to read this.” Sam pouted.
“Do you remember what happened the last time you weren’t very nice to me when you wanted me to read?” Dean asked eyebrows raised skeptically.
“Don’t take it away Dean!” Sam yanked the book away from Dean’s grasp and squeezed it to his chest. His lower lip trembled as his fingers grasped the book tightly. His little knuckles turned white as his eyes pleaded with his brother to leave the book alone.
“Sammy, I’m not going to take it away. Just be nice and I’ll read it.” Dean said holding out his hand for the book, which Sam hesitantly handed to him. He snuggled up closer to him, burying half his face in Dean’s arm.
“Ok, so let’s read The Gingerbread Man and the stupid old people who made him.” Dean said flipping open the book and revealing the pudgy old lady and her pudgy husband. Sam giggled a little and waited patiently for Dean to start reading it once again. “Once upon a time there was a pudgy old lady and her fat old husband and they sat around on their asses all day and did absolutely nothing while their crops withered and died in the freaking hot sun.”
“Dean!”
Sam and Dean both jumped and looked towards the bathroom, which now stood open, John stood there rubbing his damp hair with a towel. “Watch your mouth that’s the second time I’ve had to tell you today. Where do you pick up that kind of language?”
Dean kept a straight face and shrugged while Sam suppressed a smile. Both knew that Dean was picking up bad language from John, but neither were willing to admit it. Neither wanted to be on the bad side of John’s temper.
“Mind your language around your brother.” John warned ducking back into the bathroom.
“Keep reading Dean!” Sam urged pulling on Dean’s shirt with his insistent fists.
“Ok well anyway these fat old bags didn’t want to do anything else but stuff their faces so they decided to make something loaded with sugar, and top it with something that had tons more sugar in it! So the old lady decided hey a gingerbread man is a great idea because they don’t make you sick. Ginger settles the tummy.”
“It does?” Sam asked wide-eyed and staring at the bag of ginger cookies on the table not ten feet away.
Dean nodded. “So she goes into the kitchen, mixes together some dough, but she has to taste test and double dips the spoon because she is nasty like that, she also pinches at the dough with her fingers because she can’t wait for the gingerbread man to be done before eating it. Then she covers him with all those sweet things like frosting, sprinkles, gumdrops, and cinnamon. When she sticks it in the oven she can’t get back up because she’s too lazy, so she yells for help and her husband has to come help her stand up. Well it’s a good thing he didn’t get stuck too otherwise they would be in a load of trouble. No one else in town liked them because they were so freaking lazy!”
Sam giggled, making Dean laugh as well and John rolled his eyes as he stepped out of the bathroom. “Are you ruining another story for your brother Dean?”
“I’m not ruining it!” Dean insisted. “Improving...this story is boring.”
“Well your brother likes it just the way it is written.”
“Dean’s version is funny.” Sam poked Dean’s arm as a cue for him to continue.
Dean did turning his attention back to the book despite John’s obvious disapproval with Dean’s version. “Well anyway it took about ten minutes for this gingerbread man to cook, and he was way overdone, see how dark he is Sammy? Well he was mad because they almost let him burn, the fat old lady wasn’t paying attention until the smoke detector went off to tell her that the gingerbread man was smoking, and everyone knows that smoking is bad for you! When the smoke cleared from the kitchen she saw that the pan was empty. She started to freak out because she wasn’t about to get her dose of sugar for her snack between her 2:30 and 3:00 meals.”
“Dean.” John warned while Sam laughed hysterically.
Dean grinned sheepishly but continued on with the story despite John’s warnings. “So anyway this fat old bag and her husband looked around for the 'much smarter than them cookie', even though it didn’t have a brain, and found him outside jumping up and down on the car. It was a rather cocky cookie and told them that he couldn’t be caught. Well the little old woman and man were hungry so they decided to run after him. Well that was the cookie’s cue to run and he did, he skipped, but not very fast because the old man and woman couldn’t run very fast and weren’t smart enough to get in their car.”
“Dean!”
Dean ignored John. “Well soon the woman was winded and her husband tripped over his fat feet. He fell flat on his face and…” He was cut off as John yanked the book out of his hands. Dean smiled as Sam pouted.
“Dad, Dean was reading that!” Sam complained.
“No he wasn’t Sammy, he was being a smart ass.” John said giving Dean a dirty look. Dean just shrugged his shoulders.
“He didn’t say he wanted the normal version. He should have specified.”
“Come here Sammy I’ll read it.” John offered relenting to Sam’s trembling lip and watering eyes. Sam held out his arms, wrapping them around John’s neck and allowed John to lift him off the bed and onto the one opposite from the one he was on before.
Dean smiled as John and Sam settled on the opposite bed before picking up his night creatures book, and listening as John read the normal version of The Gingerbread Man to Sam. Dean had a sneaky way to get out of doing something he really didn’t want to do, reading that book had been one of them. He had had a feeling that if he had continued with his version of the story John would soon tire of it and read it himself. It had worked.

:skip update there's an update...ok now I should read it, but wanted to post my appreciation first because I'm exhausted and might not last long enough to go on and on!
Kezzie - July 9, 2007 01:28 AM (GMT)
haha oh dean, such a smart kid. I didn't even pick up on the fact he was tricking his dad and I guess I should have. I was just so amused by the fact he kept pushing it...you could just tell John could only tolerate it so much longer. Though I love that Sam didn't protest in the slightest about either version! great job again x
