There hadn’t been a hunt for almost two weeks, and Dean was getting quite irritated to say the least. He spoke up just as Sam was logging onto his laptop.
“Dude Sam, why are we still here? We could be sitting in that bar down the street scoping out some fine women. Don’t you wanna have a little bit of fun? Please”?
Sam waved Dean off when he found an article that caught his eye. It was an article from the Seattle Post, it read: ‘Man found dead in bedroom, wife claims that something sucked the life right out of him killed him. Cause of death unknown. Police have yet to find any suspects’. He looked over at Dean when he was finished reading the headline. He spoke up.
“Hey Dean, take a look at this. I found an article in the Seattle post, front page. Listen to this: ‘Man found dead in bedroom, wife claims something other than human killed him. Cause of death unknown. Police have yet to find any suspects’. The police say he was found laying in bed his eyes wide open as if he were scared of something. His mouth was open as if he were screaming. The woman’s name is Nina Jarvis. So, do we have something here or not”?
Dean took a long hard look at Sam for a second. He liked the idea. He was about ready to make up his mind. Then he nodded his head in approval. He spoke up.
“Sam, the only thing that would do that is a Shtriga. You know what we have to do, we’re going to Seattle. Pack your stuff Sam; we’re leaving in two minutes. If your butt isn’t out the door by the time I’m done packing, I’m leaving whether you like it or not”.
Sam quickly shut his laptop and stuffed it into his bag. He then stuffed all of his clothes on top of it. He hurried over to the bathroom and grabbed all of his stuff in there and threw it in another bag. He then quickly zipped it shut. He was ready before Dean could even finish packing his clothes. He spoke up.
“Well I’m done. Looks like I finished before the two minutes was up. Guess I’m driving then”.
Dean threw the rest of his stuff in his bag and zipped it shut. He rushed towards the open door to the room and went out it. Sam had already beaten him to the car. He had put his stuff in the trunk. His brother was about to do the same. When he put his stuff in the trunk he tried grabbing for the car keys. Sam held them up high. He thought it was funny. He spoke up.
“What are you going to do now Dean? I’ve got the keys and you’re too short to reach them! Come and get them if you can”!
Dean became angry and tried to jump up and reach for them. But Sam still held them out of reach so that Dean couldn’t get to them. This was going to be fun.
Seattle, Washington
Nina had just finished up giving Katie and Will their breakfast. It had been a long morning. Yesterday had been bad enough, but today had seemed worse. Peter was gone now and there was nothing she could do about it. She had been married barely a month when he passed away suddenly. Katie and Will had just gone upstairs so everything in the kitchen was quiet. Everything had been happy up until yesterday morning when the creature came into the bedroom and took away Peter. Nina had been scared out of her mind. She had seen weird before. But nothing that came from your nightmares before. The creature was ugly. Well, she didn’t really get a good look at the face. It was dark and it had robes on. That was all she could get out of that though. She was surprised to see that Jamie was still hanging on after a scare like that. Jamie was a strong baby though. She had gone through a whole lot and was still hanging on. She paused on washing the dishes for a second when she heard the doorbell ring. She dropped the dish that she was washing into the soapy water. Then she quickly dried her hands on the dish towel. She slowly walked out to the living room and towards the front door. She looked in the door hole and saw two young men standing at her front door. She unlocked it and opened the door just slightly. This reminded her too much of the time “Bob” took her. She spoke up.
“May I help you gentlemen”?
Sam could only stare at Nina for a second. Nina looked back at Sam for a second and then repeated her question once more.
“May I help you gentlemen”?
Sam snapped out of his reverie when Dean whacked him across the head with his hand. He shot Dean a nasty look. He spoke up smiling.
“My name is Sam and this is my brother Dean. We worked with your husband… We came by to give our condolences. I hope that’s alright with you if we come in”?
Nina only looked at him for a second. She began laughing. Doctors? Oh these guys were good! She knew who they were. One of the agents at work said they had seen them once while they were on vacation. She spoke up.
“I know who you two are. Your Sam and Dean Winchester. I knew your dad once. I had once asked him for his help when a poltergeist came into my house and wouldn’t leave me or my daughter alone”.
Nina moved out of the way so that Sam and Dean could come inside. She led them over to the couch so that they could have a seat. Sam looked at her once more. Then he spoke up.
“Could we have some water please”?
Jarvis nodded her head and went back into the kitchen. Her back was bothering her again. Sam and Dean watched her retreating figure. He spoke up as soon as she was in the kitchen.
“Hey Dean, don’t you notice the uncanny resemblance between Ellen and Nina? They look exactly alike. Almost as if they were twins. Their not even related to each other. But it’s like they say, every one has some one in the world that looks similar to themselves. Nina is Ellen’s double. That is weird”.
Dean shrugged his shoulders. It wasn’t particularly important to him that Nina looked like Ellen. What he wanted to find out was why this Shtriga was bothering her and her family. And why it took her husband. The two watched as Nina came back into the room. She handed them their glasses of water. They accepted them gratefully. After Dean took a sip of his water he asked his first question.
“So, could you tell us a little bit about this creature you saw the morning your husband was killed”?
Jarvis had to think on that. Not a lot of the things were clear anymore. Things were becoming fuzzy with some of the things that she remembered that happened that morning. She began her story anyways.
“Well, I was sleeping when it happened. It was early in the morning. Maybe about 1:30 or 2:00. I had just turned over on my side to get comfortable again, and that’s when I felt Peter grab my arm in a death grip. I opened my eyes only to see him staring at something. I shifted my eyes to see what he was looking at. When I did, I nearly had a panic attack. I couldn’t see if the creature had a face or not but I know that it did have dark robes on and its mouth was open wide like Peter’s was. It was almost as if it were sucking the life right out of my husband. I tried to push the thing away from Peter but by the time I did, it was already too late. He was already dead. By that time I had been thrown against the wall by that thing. I’m surprised I didn’t go into premature labor with my daughter. What a mess that would have been if I had”.
Sam looked at Nina with pity. He felt bad. She had to raise her children without a father. This must have been what Ellen felt like when she lost her husband. She had to raise Jo alone. But she did okay. Nina seemed tough though. Not at all unlike Ellen. He spoke up hoping his words were encouraging enough.
“Nina, I’m sure your husband was a very nice man. Judging from the pictures you have spread all over the living room and on the mantel over the fireplace, he loved you very much. He’s in a better place. You’ll be together again someday”.
Jarvis could only look at him with tears forming at the corners of her eyes. He was so kind. He said kind words to her. She wished her son would be more like him when he was older. Suddenly, she did something she thought she’d never do, she hugged Sam, and hugged him tight. Dean only made a face. Sam gave him a nasty look. He listened as she spoke up.
“Sam, your so kind, why can’t my son grow up to be like you? Somehow, without his father here, he’ll grow up bitter and angry because his father was taken away at such a young age. Losing his father has hit him hard. But it’s hit me worse. I’ve got to get me something to calm me down. I don’t want to have my daughter early. Especially at seven months. That’s dangerous. You would think that ever since something like this has happened that I would have gone into labor. But somehow I didn’t. I hope you boys can get that thing out of my house. I want my house to be safe again. My children are afraid to go to sleep at night because of it”.
Sam helped Jarvis sit up straight once more. He saw her tense up suddenly. He could feel her gripping his hand tight. He looked over at Dean who was on edge next to him. He was staring at something on the floor. Sam spoke up.
“Dean? What are you staring at? And why is there all that water on the floor for? Nina are you in labor? Your water didn’t break did it”?
Nina shook her head no. She was fine, she wasn’t all wet. This was something else and she knew it. She knew what it was. The little girl masquerading as her niece Rachel. But she knew it wasn’t Rachel at all. It was something evil like her son once said it was. All three of them were staring at the figure that stood in front of them on the other side of the coffee table. The figure was staring straight at Jarvis. She closed her eyes not wanting to look at it. She squeezed Sam’s hand tighter. She was beginning to hurt terribly. Sam looked over at her. He got a worried look on his face. Something was wrong with her. He looked back at Dean who was also worried. He spoke to his brother.
“Dean, we have to get rid of that thing. That’s no Shtriga, but it’s hurting her”.
Nina forced her eyes open and looked at it. It did resemble Rachel down to the eyebrows and the brown eyes. She kept looking at the creature, it’s dripping wet form gazed menacingly at her. She spoke up.
“Why are you here? Ra… Why are you here? Why can’t you just leave us alone? You’re hurting me! Why can’t you leave me alone”?
Dean quickly got up from the couch and went towards the front door. He spoke to Jarvis before going out. He wanted to make sure who it was before he went barreling away at it.
“Jarvis, is that the thing that pretends to be your niece Rachel”?
Jarvis nodded her head and doubled over in pain. She wished he would quit saying her niece’s name. It only caused her more pain. Sam shot Dean a mean look. He spoke up.
“I think we’ve established that this thing is pretending to be her niece Dean! Don’t say her name; it only makes her daughter start disappearing. Go get the salt gun Dean! It’s the only way kill this thing”!
Dean nodded his head and pulled the front door open telling Sam to stay with her while he got what he needed from the car. Sam stayed with Nina and tried to keep her as far away from the angry spirit as possible. The two listened as the angry spirit spoke up.
“Aunt Nina, why did you let me die? Why did you? You loved me, why did you let me go? Mommy would have never done that to me. Neither would daddy. You know I’m the one that’s supposed to be alive not Jamie. She’s not all that important. But me, I’m more important than you think. Before I went away, I had talent. I knew how to work things. Mommy and daddy sent me to an academy for gifted children. So I guess I was pretty special. Jamie has to go whether you like it or not. With her gone, I can come back. Mommy and daddy would have me back and then everything would be back to the way things used to be before I went away”.
Nina wanted nothing more than to have her niece Rachel back. But she knew that could never be. Rachel was gone and that was that. This creature was not Rachel. It was something evil. Sam looked at the angry spirit and then looked back at Jarvis. He knew that she was about to crack and hug the spirit. He spoke up still looking at her.
“Nina, look at me, that’s not your niece. Your niece has been gone since she was seven years old. That thing is an angry spirit pretending to be your niece so that she can reach in and take Jamie away from you. This angry spirit is only causing you pain. Dean can kill it. He knows what he’s doing”.
Jarvis shifted a bit and tried to move away from “Rachel”. Sam helped her move farther from it. Dean came back inside the house and looked at Sam. He spoke up.
“Sam, get down and keep her covered”.
Sam did as he was told. Nina moved a little as she heard the baby monitor by her hand begin to crackle. Staying down on the floor was quite uncomfortable to Jarvis, but it was the only way she would be safe. Sam kept her blocked with his body. She shifted a bit more to try and abate the pain in her stomach. But it didn’t help. Her eyes closed when she heard Dean shoot the salt gun at the angry spirit. The thing screamed in awful agony. Before she blacked out, she felt the angry spirit reach out for her. It grabbed her arm. She felt like her skin was on fire. After that she didn’t see or hear anything. She felt like the breath had been knocked out of her. And that’s the last she saw of anything. Dean looked over at Sam and spoke up.
“It’s safe now Sam. You can tell Jarvis to get up now”.
Sam moved from in front of Nina only to find that her eyes were closed. He gently tried to shake her to see if that would do anything. Nothing. She didn’t budge a single inch. Dean was about to say something, but Sam told him to be quiet. As soon as the room was quiet he listened. But the only thing he could hear was his and his brothers breathing. She was silent. He spoke up looking at Dean.
“Dean, she’s not breathing man. Maybe the angry spirit had some sort of hold on her. And when it let her go, it really let her go”.
Dean began to swear under his breath, but stopped suddenly when he saw two children coming down the stairs. He watched as the boy ran down the stairs. He reminded him a lot of himself at that age. He listened as the girl called after her brother.
“Will, not so fast! You know I can’t run down the stairs”!
He turned to Sam looking at him with wide eyes. They couldn’t see their mother like this. They couldn’t. He wouldn’t let them. He wouldn’t have a repeat of what he saw with his mother. And he didn’t want them to have to go through that either. He’d save their mother. He’d get her back. He kept looking at Sam. Then he spoke up.
“Sam, I want you to take the kids upstairs and keep them up there until I can get their mother breathing again. You got that Sammy? Sammy? Are you even listening to me”?
Sam snapped out of his reverie when he heard his brother’s voice. He got up quickly and went towards both Will and Katie. He smiled at them both. He knelt down in front of them and introduced himself.
“Hi, my name’s Sam. I’m a friend of your mom’s”.
Katie and Will tried to look behind him, but he blocked them and changed the subject. He didn’t want them to see their mother like this at all. He had to get them out of the room. He spoke up once more.
“I have an idea, let’s go upstairs and play a game. Your mom’s going to be just fine. My brother Dean is going to take care of her”.
Sam looked back at Dean with a nervous expression on his face. But it went away as soon as he turned back to Katie and Will both. He led them towards the stairs. Will ran up the stairs ahead of them. He yelled to Sam who was helping Katie up the stairs.
“We’re going to my room first Sam”!
Sam started to protest when he saw Will run into his room. He continued to help Katie up the stairs. When they got to the top, Katie sat down. Sam sat down next to her concerned. He spoke up.
“Hey, Katie, are you okay”?
Katie nodded her head. Meanwhile, downstairs, Dean was still working on Jarvis, trying hard to get her to breathe. He didn’t like to beg. But he was begging now only because he didn’t want to see these children lose there mother. The only family they had left.
“Come on Jarvis, come back, your children need you. You are not going to quit on me now. Those kids need you”.
He sighed in relief when she took in a breath. She started to cough for a second, and Dean made her sit up. He reached onto the coffee table for his unused glass of water and had her take a few sips of it. When she finished swallowing the water she spoke up. Her voice was barely more than a whisper.
“W-what happened to me”?
Dean cleared his throat and thought about what he was going to say to her. He’d tell her what he did, and how he saved her life. He spoke up looking her in the eye.
“Don’t worry; you and your family are safe for now. That thing you were seeing, it was an angry spirit. The only way to kill one of those things is with a salt gun. It never fails. Somehow that angry spirit had a hold of you. When I shot it, it let go of you. And I mean literally let go of you. Don’t worry, your kids are safe. Sam took them upstairs to play a game. You okay? You’re not hurt are you”?
Jarvis looked at Dean as if she were unsure. She wasn’t so sure that the baby was okay. Dean helped her sit up more. Nina winced a bit and placed her hand over her stomach. She sighed in relief when she felt little feet kicking her. She smiled and shook her head no. She was okay. She spoke up.
“No, I’m fine. I was just worried about this baby. But she’s alright. Thank the stars for that. Children are our most precious resources. As a mother, I stand by that everyday. Are we really safe now? Or is there something else still in this house? What about that thing that attacked and killed my husband? I suppose you have to find a way to kill it. I have buried one daughter and a husband. I don’t want to lose any more of my family. You and Sam find a way to kill that thing before it destroys my entire family”.
Dean nodded his head. He saw Sam come down the stairs with both Katie and Will. Will ran ahead of Sam while he held Katie in his arms as he came down the stairs. Will was the first to reach his mother. He smiled and hugged her.
“Mommy! Your okay. Did Dean make that scary girl go away”?
She smiled and held him close. She wanted her children to be safe. She decided that maybe the boys should stay here tonight. Then they could get rid of that thing that was in her bedroom. Jarvis watched as Sam put Katie down. She smiled up at her mother and sat down next to her, and snuggled close. Sam groaned and held his head suddenly. He was having another vision. A bathroom, with a bathtub overflowing with water. He stepped closer to the bathtub. He gasped when he saw what was in it. No… It was Katie. He didn’t know how he was going to explain this one to Nina. She wouldn’t take it very well. His vision ended suddenly. He gasped and sat down on the ground for a second. Dean went straight to his brother.
“Sam! Talk to me! What did you see”?
Sam could only stare for a second. He was shaking and pale. What he had seen wasn’t pleasant at all. But most of his visions weren’t pleasant anyways. He finally got up the courage to look Dean in the eye. He spoke up relaying every detail he could to his brother.
“Dean, I saw a bathroom… The bathtub was overflowing with water. I stepped closer to it and when I saw what was in it I took a step back. Dean, there was a little girl in the bathtub, and it was Katie…”
A/N: So, do y’all like it, or do ya dislike it strongly? I'm trying the best I can here... What do y'all really think?

Everything seemed alright for the most part. But something was still not right about this picture. Nina could feel it. Her children could feel it, and so could Sam and Dean. Sam and Dean both kept an eye out for things that didn’t belong in the house. They had poured salt all over the house and everywhere else they could think of. It was the only way they could stay safe and protected. Sam was helping Jarvis chop some carrots for dinner when he decided to start a conversation.
“You have a very nice family. Your kids have so much energy, how do you keep up with them”?
Nina smiled at Sam. She took care of them as best she could. It was so much harder now that Peter was gone. But she’d learn to manage. She hadn’t felt so alone since before she married Peter. She spoke up with a sad smile on her face.
“I try to keep up with those two as much as I can. But it’s so hard when you’re limited on the things you can do. I’m not supposed to go up and down the stairs too much. But I do that anyways. I can’t have bacon; I can’t have salami, basically everything that has too much cholesterol in it. Usually I’m not this whiny, but what can I say? Like I used to tell Peter, I’m pregnant, I’m allowed to be whiny. Katie doesn’t understand where her father has gone. It’s hard for her to comprehend things. I gotta tell ya, raising a little girl with downsyndrom isn’t an easy task. She’s got the learning ability of a six year old. Katie tries to understand things, but it takes time. I have to explain it to her five different ways sometimes. There are so many things that ail that poor kid. Up until about two months ago, she could not extend her left arm out. She had surgery to correct that. You saw she has problems with her legs. She had surgery to correct that too. I take her to physical therapy twice a week to help her regain more strength back. Some days she does fine, others she doesn’t. Today seems like it used to be. Before I met Peter. There would be days where she would run around and it didn’t bother her in the least. But then other days, she couldn’t get out of bed without help. But that was the past. She’s doing so much better now. The only thing that will not go away is her seizures. I have to watch those carefully. I have to watch what she eats too. There are so many things that she can’t eat that I have to watch. But I try not to think of those things. She’s a great little kid. She listens even if she doesn’t quite understand you. Like I said, raising a child with special needs is not an easy task”.
Sam nodded his head. He understood. He looked over at Dean who was helping Katie with her numbers. Katie sat intently at the table as Dean spoke to her.
“Hey Katie, what comes after one kiddo”?
Katie smiled when she got the answer. She was shy around Dean. But she liked him. She spoke up when she got the answer.
“Three”.
Dean shook his head and pointed to the number that came after one. Katie knit her forehead in thought. She turned her head sideways. She was getting confused. She scratched her head. She watched as Dean pointed to the number again and said it out loud this time.
“Katie, can you say two? Can you count with me? One, two… What comes after two sweetie”?
Katie knew the answer this time. This one she wasn’t so confused on. She smiled up at Dean and took out the flashcard that was under two. She turned it around to show Dean. She pointed to it as she spoke.
“Three. One, t-two, three… F-four… F-f-Five… Si.. Six… S-seven… E-… Ei…”
She always had trouble with saying eight. Dean found the flashcard with the number seven on it. Katie looked at it and pointed. She spoke up.
“Seven”.
Dean smiled and put it behind the number eight flashcard. He pointed to eight and said it out loud so that Katie could repeat it after him.
“Eight Katie. Can you say eight”?
Katie knit her forehead together in confusion once more. She wanted to do as Dean said to do, but it was really hard. She turned her head sideways once more and looked at the number. She tried once again to say it.
“E-eight… Eight…”
Dean smiled and took a bite of his toast. He loved toast smothered with lots of butter. He tried to offer some to Katie but she pushed his hand away. He offered her some again. But she pushed his hand away once more. He didn’t understand that she couldn’t have butter. Period.
“Look Katie, this is really good. Here, have some. Don’t you like butter”?
Katie looked at Dean; she had a scared look on her face. Dean didn’t know what for. He tried once more to give the butter to her. She pushed his hand away. He would understand why in a minute. He listened as she spoke up.
“No butter”!
Jarvis turned on her heel when she heard the word butter. Her ears became radars when it came to that one word. Butter was like poison to her. She had to stop him before he went any further with it. She spoke up.
“Dean, don’t do that. She can’t have butter. Butter is like poison to her. If she eats it, it’ll cause her throat to close up and then where’d we be”?
Dean stuffed the rest of the toast with butter into his mouth. Well, this was certainly awkward. He stuffed the bread in his mouth so that he wouldn’t come under Jarvis’ fire. He hadn’t known about that and he was truly sorry. He spoke up after he finished swallowing his bread.
“Oh geez Jarvis, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that Katie couldn’t have butter. I wish you would have told me before I tried to give it to her”.
Nina sighed and turned back to the chopping board and began chopping carrots to put into the soup. She pressed her left hand up against her back. She had to do something about this, her back was killing her. There wasn’t much she could take that she felt was safe enough for both her and Jamie. Sam stood next to her peeling some potatoes. He had a concerned look on his face when he glanced at her. He spoke up voicing his concerns.
“Are you okay? If your back is bothering you, maybe you should go sit down”.
Jarvis shook her head. She was alright. She was stubborn when it came down to people babying her. She liked to take care of herself. She knew that Sam and Dean weren’t invading her home. They were only trying to help get rid of the supernatural beings that were invading her home. She stopped chopping the carrots for a second. Her arm was bothering her again. Well, that angry spirit had gotten her good. She looked at her right arm where the angry spirit had touched her. It was all red. She carefully probed it with her right hand. Dean looked at Jarvis with a concerned look on his face. He hadn’t known that she had gotten that. He spoke up.
“Jarvis, where did you get that”?
Nina looked away from Dean. Her face turned red. She didn’t want anybody babying her just because she hurt her arm. So the angry spirit had gotten her. She’d be alright. She spoke up.
“It’s nothing Dean. So the angry spirit got me when Sam pulled me down. It’s not a big deal. There just claw marks. I didn’t get seriously hurt. I’m not in labor, and my water didn’t break. I’m fine”.
Dean softened a bit. He didn’t like to see women get hurt or cry. He only wanted to make sure that her family was kept safe. Jarvis bit her lip in frustration. See, this was the kind of mess she was going to get herself into if she wasn’t careful. She had to keep herself as calm and as focused as possible. There would be no children being born today. She spoke up.
“I’m sorry Dean. I didn’t mean to snap at you like that. My mood swings are horrible these days. I don’t know what’s gotten into me half the time… I think this second pregnancy has made me crankier than when I was carrying my son. Even then things were a bit different. My son almost came into the world while I was trapped in a dark dusty basement in a boarded up house about forty miles from here. I was in labor with him for 72 hours. Believe me, those three days, were the worst three days in my life. My son didn’t have any trouble making himself known to the world that he was there and that he was coming whether we liked it or not”.
Dean swallowed nervously. But he then quickly brushed it off as nothing. He helped her sit down at the kitchen table. She swallowed hard and grabbed the edge of the kitchen table. She shut her eyes for a second, and took a deep breath. Something did not feel right about this picture. It wasn’t like she was in labor or anything, but, something just felt different is all. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She spoke up once more.
“Something’s not right about this picture Dean… I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something doesn’t feel right… I don’t feel like myself… I know that look on your face; I’ve seen it about a billion times from my husband… No, I haven’t gone into labor… But something does feel a little off though… I just don’t know what it is though… It may only be nothing… Never mind, that was strange… It’s gone now… I don’t like this at all”.
Dean looked at her still, and now Sam had placed himself next to her. Katie was gradually picking up on her mother’s worried expression on her face. Katie was very good at reading facial expressions. Sam grabbed a chair from the end of the table and sat down in it next to Jarvis. He spoke up.
“Well, what do you feel like now? Do you feel like yourself again? Or do you feel like there is something in you? Not your daughter Jamie of course, but something else entirely different”.
Nina turned her head sideways for a moment. She waited for a second when she placed her hand over her stomach. She kept it there for a second. When she didn’t feel anything, she frowned. She sat and rubbed it for a minute hoping that something would happen. She spoke up hoping it would help, but more out of comfort for her.
“Come on sweetie, I know you’re in there. Tell mommy what’s wrong. I think she was just startled. She’s been doing that a lot lately”.
Jarvis smiled, she knew that Jamie was doing summersaults again, she was alright. It almost always frightened her when she went still like that. She wondered if this had something to do with the angry spirit that had been in her house. She didn’t think that it was gone yet. She turned her attention back to Dean and spoke up.
“Dean, I don’t think that angry spirit that masqueraded as my niece is gone yet. I think she’s still here. I can almost feel it. Sam asked me what I felt like, well a moment ago, I felt like someone or rather something went through me. Like it tried to go right into me. I know there is only Jamie inside of me but, for only a fraction of a second I felt not only one set of tiny feet, but two sets of feet… So, could you two please tell me what’s going on because I refuse to believe that I’ve lost my mind completely”.
Sam and Dean looked back at each other, obviously not knowing what
to say to her. They didn’t understand it either. That angry spirit seemed to be attaching itself to her for some reason. Dean glanced over at her and spoke.
“For some reason, that angry spirit attached itself to you. Maybe just to be safer, we should pour more salt around the kitchen. I’d feel safer knowing that we had more salt in the house”.
Nina nodded her head. Sam placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it comfortingly. She smiled at the gesture. Katie looked at her mother strangely for a second. She took one of her hearing aides off of her ears and looked at it. She turned it off for a second and then turned it back on and put it back on her ear again. She turned her head sideways. She couldn’t hear anything. She took the other one off and did the same with that. Still nothing. She put it back on her ear and kept looking at her mother once more. Jarvis looked at Katie carefully. She spoke up.
“Katie? What is it sweetie? Are your hearing aides not working”?
Katie tried to speak to her mother in a normal tone of voice, but since her hearing aides weren’t working, she spoke a bit too loudly for everyone’s liking. She looked into her mother’s eyes and spoke.
“Batteries mama”.
Nina sighed in frustration, she knew she should have gone out and bought more batteries. She needed some of those small round batteries that went into watches. Well, it was a tad bit too late to get batteries now. They were stuck with what they got. She looked into Katie’s eyes and spoke. She touched her left ear and then her lips.
“I’ll find you some more batteries sweetie”.
Katie handed her mother her hearing aides. She took them from Katie and carefully took the old batteries out. She made sure that they were both off before she took the batteries out. She looked back over at her daughter. She watched for a moment as she saw Katie stiffen up. Jarvis’ eyes widened with fear as she saw what was behind Katie’s chair. It was the angry spirit. Sam and Dean could only sit and stare at the angry spirit that was behind Katie. The spirit had Katie pinned up against the wall now. Nina tried to go over towards her daughter, but she was tossed off to the side of the kitchen by the dripping wet angry spirit. She hit the ground hard, knocking herself out in the process. Sam didn’t make any sudden movements as Dean shot the salt gun at the angry spirit. When it didn’t flinch he shot at it again, only making it angrier still. It lunged at Dean and knocked him over. When he felt something squeezing his heart, he knew that this angry spirit was strong. He felt some one take that salt gun away from him. He heard the shot that was fired. Then he felt the pressure in his chest start to fade and he could breathe again. The angry spirit was gone for now… Again… He lifted himself off of the ground. Sam went straight to Katie and gathered her into his arms for a second. She was crying really hard. She was really scared. Sam went over to Jarvis and knelt down next to her. He sighed. She was still breathing. The angry spirit must have knocked her out. They had to get that angry spirit and that Shtriga out of the house before it consumed the whole family. And soon…

Awesome story Mancha! I like how you flowed I could picture it all in my head. I agree with Irish, I like how Dean was teaching Katie her numbers. So sweet!!
Mancha - January 19, 2007 10:51 PM (GMT)
Just so everyone knows, just as a side note here: Katie is actually 9 years old. Alot of you probably think she's four... She's not. She has problems learning things. She is mentally and physically limited on the things she can do. In the end, Katie is a special needs child. Just thought I'd add a little side note about her. Enjoy!
Chapter 3: Are We Safe From The Evil That Lurks This House?
Author: Mancha
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Supernatural or 4400 characters. But I do own: Katie, Will, and Jamie. Oh and the dog Koda. Date Started: 1/16/07. Date Finished: 1/19/07. I hope you will all enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything seemed like chaos in the kitchen at the moment. All Dean could hear was Katie and Will’s relentless wailing over what had just happened to their mother. Even the dog was wailing. Well, he was howling was more like it. The dog stopped suddenly, and scurried out of the room with his tail in between his legs. Katie and Will both clung to their mother as if life itself depended on it. Sam tried to get them to go out of the room with him. But they clung to their mother tighter still.
“MOMMY! Please get up”!
Sam tried the best he could to try and comfort the two children. He knew that their mother would be alright, but they didn’t. Will finally got up and ran into Sam’s arms. But Katie stayed right where she was, next to her mother, refusing to move from her spot, fearful that her mother would wake up and would worry where she had gone. Katie still didn’t budge when Dean tried to get her to move away from her mother. He even picked her up at one point, but she only went straight back to her mother. Dean was about to give up. Sam watched as Nina began to stir. She opened her eyes and tried to sit up. But Dean carefully and gently pushed her back down with his hand. He spoke up.
“Take it easy now Jarvis, you took a pretty bad fall. You should stay still, just for the time being anyways…”
Jarvis nodded her head slowly and looked over at Katie who was still crying next to her. She got tears in her eyes. She didn’t like to see Katie crying. She tried to pull herself up once more, but found that she could not. It was getting very hard for her to breathe lying on her back. Sam could see that. She shouldn’t be lying like that anyways. Sam looked at Dean and spoke up.
“Dean, help me turn her over on her side. She shouldn’t be lying on her back. She can’t breathe when she’s lying on her back like that. Pregnant women in general can’t lie on their backs anyways because it’ll cause suffocation. Why else do you think they lay on their sides when they sleep”?
Sam and Dean carefully turned Jarvis over on her side. She was sore from when the angry spirit threw her to the ground. She groaned a little bit. Both Dean and Sam looked at her with serious looks on their faces. They both spoke up in unison.
“You okay? We didn’t hurt you did we”?
Jarvis shook her head no. Her face lit up when she saw a figure suddenly standing in front of her and was emitting a gold color light. She smiled when she saw who it was. It was Peter. He had come back to watch over her. Katie saw who it was too and ran towards him. She spoke up.
“Daddy! When are you coming home”?
Katie watched as her daddy knelt down next to her. She kept crying. He wiped the tears away from her eyes. He knew that he had to tell her exactly how it was. He didn’t want to, he loved his little girl deeply, but this had to be done. He spoke up slowly and clearly so that Katie could understand him.
“Katie, baby girl, I won’t be coming back. I just want you to know that I love you, your brother and your mommy and Jamie all very much. I will be watching over you always from heaven”.
He watched as his daughter cried even harder. He didn’t like to see his little girl cry, he lightly placed a kiss on her head. He looked over at his son next. He smiled at him. Will ran to his father and hugged him tight. He spoke up.
“Daddy? You mean your not coming home”?
Peter shook his head no at his son. He wasn’t coming back home. It broke Nina’s heart to hear those words. But it was the truth. He knelt down in front of his son and wiped away his tears too. He spoke up.
“Whatever happens Will, I want you to know that I’m watching over you, your mother, and your sisters. You take care of your mother for me. I know you’ll do a good job. And don’t let your mother have any more of that chocolate. She doesn’t need anymore of it”.
Will nodded his head and stopped crying. He was trying to be brave, for his mother. He and Katie went over and stood next to Sam and Dean. All four of them watched as Peter knelt down next to Jarvis. They all listened as he spoke up.
“Hey sweetie, how are feeling? I don’t think your going to have anymore problems with Jamie. She’s strong, just like her mother. When she’s older and asks about me, tell her that I will always be watching over her even though I may not be there in person”.
Nina watched as Peter placed his hand on her stomach and rubbed it gently. She placed her hand on top of his enormous one. She wished that he could stay. But she knew that he couldn’t. She peered up at him with tears in her eyes. She spoke up.
“Peter, do you really have to go? Your kids really need you… Katie seems to be getting worse Peter. I don’t know what’s wrong… She was doing so well, and now she’s going down hill again… She might need that wheelchair after all…”
Peter looked at his wife with sorrow in his eyes. He knew that Katie wouldn’t be in good health for long. Her biological mother was responsible for putting her in this position anyways. Usually he didn’t blame people for anything, but in the case of Katie’s biological mother, he had the right… She had been a cocaine and a meth addict. No child should ever have to be born into that. He spoke up.
“Now Nina, don’t say that. We don’t know why this is happening to her. It could be the work of that awful thing that attacked and killed me in our bedroom. Or it could be that angry spirit masquerading as Ra- or I mean our niece. Maybe once these boys get rid of both these evil things, I can finally rest easier. You take care of yourself honey”.
Before he turned to speak to both Sam and Dean, he placed a kiss on top of Jarvis’ stomach and spoke for a second.
“You be daddies good little girl okay? I want you to listen to your mother, and I don’t want to hear you arguing with her so much when you’re a teenager. But I guess I can’t really expect you to follow that. Your sister Katie would though…”
Peter then stood up and turned towards both Sam and Dean. He smiled at them both. He knew that they would take good care of his wife, but he wanted to make sure that they had all the ground rules first before they went any further. He spoke up.
“Sam, Dean Winchester, I’m Peter Morgan. I was Nina’s husband; I hope you boys can get that ugly thing that killed me out of my house. I’ll rest easier that way. Now, ground rules, I want you to make sure that my wife doesn’t eat anymore chocolate. Number two: I want the two of you to watch her carefully; she’s been having nasty dizzy and fainting spells lately. If it does come to pass that she has a horrible fainting spell, which may happen sooner rather than later, my bag is upstairs in the hallway closet on the middle shelf. In there, you will find some smelling salt. If that doesn’t work, then you might have to wait until she comes to. Make sure she doesn’t move too quickly. It usually causes another dizzy spell when she moves too fast after losing consciousness like that. I worry for her sometimes. This occurrence might happen more than once. So be prepared. Number three: I want the two of you to keep your eye on my Katie. She needs constant supervision. As my wife pointed out to you boys earlier, taking care of a special needs child is no easy task. Find batteries for her hearing aids as soon as you can. I’m not sure if the two of you have taken any American Sign Language classes. But that is how Katie communicates when she can’t hear anything, is with sign language. Her mother and I have been communicating with her like that for quite some time now. Now if her mother is temporarily incapacitated, I want one of you to give her, her seizure medication. It’s in a clear light blue prescription bottle. She has trouble swallowing so you need to cut the pill in half. She can only have half anyways because a whole one might just make things worse. She needs to take it after she’s eaten her dinner. I’m sure her mother can give it to her. But I’m just saying this as a precaution. One can’t be too careful. Number four: Keep an eye on my son, he’s perfectly fine, he just needs somebody to keep him out of trouble. And whatever you do, don’t let him hide in the laundry chute; we had to call the fire department last month when he got stuck in there… Also, don’t let him tie his sister to the chair. She has accident’s that she can’t control and when he does this just to be mean to her, it only makes it worse. You boys take care now, and take good care of my wife while you’re around. And get that thing out of my house”.
With that, Peter was gone. Sam and Dean didn’t know what to think of what they had just seen. Dean looked over at Jarvis with one question on his lips. He spoke up with a concerned look on his face.
“Do I bother asking what the he… Excuse me what the heck was that all about? Don’t tell me your husband is some sort of saint or something like that”.
Nina shook her head no. Her husband wasn’t all that way. But she did know that he cared about his children and was a good husband to her. He had never betrayed her. He would have certainly never done that. His allegiance was to her, and her only. He vowed that on their wedding day. He told her that he would honor that until the day they died. She spoke up.
“As far as I’m concerned, my husband committed all the seven deadly sins just like the rest of us. He wasn’t perfect. But that’s what being human is all about isn’t it boys”?
Sam and Dean nodded their heads. Sam went over to her and carefully helped her to her feet. He waited to make sure that she was alright to stand on her feet. All of them looked up towards the second floor when they heard splashing and a door slam shut upstairs. Jarvis’ heart began to race as all these different images of one of her children raced through her head. Then, realization hit her. She looked around the room, but could only find one of her children. Will was the only one of her children that was in the room with them. She spoke up startled.
“Oh my goodness! Katie! Sam, Dean, we have to get to her now”!
All four of them hurried up the stairs. Dean tried his best to break down the door to the bathroom, but something was keeping it shut. Finally, after a few kicks to the door, he busted it open. There was water all over the place. He walked over to the tub and turned it off. He got a horrified expression on his face when he saw Katie lying in the tub. He pulled her out of the tub and brought her out into the hallway. Nina began to cry when she saw Katie. She knelt down next to her and let the tears spill out. Dean was doing the best he could to get Katie breathing again. Really he was. This was going to far…

Chapter 4: Are My Children Safe?
Author: Mancha
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Supernatural characters or the 4400 characters. But I do own: Katie, Will, and Jamie. Date Started: 1/20/07. Date Finished: 1/23/07. Hope you will all enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dean was getting frustrated by all this. He was determined to bring Katie back among the living again. She had to come back. He was not going to have to see Jarvis bury another child of hers. That is why Katie had to come back. He kept speaking to her as if it would help.
“Come on Katie, please come back. Please breathe. Your mom needs you, and so does your brother. Your dad wouldn’t want you to be with him just yet. You still need your mother. Please Katie, please breathe”.
When Katie began to spit out the water she had swallowed, Dean smiled knowing what he did had worked. Sam helped him turn Katie over on her side to get the rest of the water out of her lungs. When the two were sure that all the water had drained out, she began to cry. Nina tried to pull Katie into her arms. Sam looked at her and spoke up.
“Nina, we should get Katie changed out of these wet clothes, wrap her in a blanket so she won’t get cold”.
Jarvis nodded her head and held Katie close. She let her tears fall still. She was alright; her little girl was really alright. She looked down at Katie for a moment. It was strange the way she held herself at odd angles. Her forehead knit together in thought. She watched Katie; she seemed more limp than normal. This wasn’t normal, even for her. She spoke up.
“Katie, talk to me baby. Are you okay? That thing didn’t hurt you did it”?
Katie found it difficult to move her head. She fought the feeling and tried to move her head again. But she couldn’t seem to bring herself to do it. Her mother held her closer and spoke to her once more. They had managed to find some batteries for her hearing aids but, she couldn’t have them on yet because she was still soaking wet.
“It’s okay baby, we’ll figure out what’s wrong with you. I promise. Let’s get some dry clothes on you shall we”?
Sam took Katie up in his arms and followed Jarvis towards Katie’s room. He looked around her room impressed by how many toys she had. His face saddened when he saw how many other things were in the room. There were wires and other things that were connected to machines. His forehead knit in confusion. He looked over at Nina and spoke up.
“Nina, what is all this stuff? Is Katie really doing that poorly”?
Jarvis sighed and looked at Sam once more. She wished to the heavens that it wasn’t true, but it was. It was times like these that it really made her wonder: Why her? Why now? But circumstances were not always easy to explain. She told it like it was.
“What? You mean the heart monitor in the corner over there? We don’t use that all the time; just when we really need it. Katie has a bad heart. She’s been like that her whole life. It comes and goes though. Like a bad cold. That comes and goes too. I used to have hired help for her, but after my son was born, I didn’t see the need because she had gotten well all of a sudden. I don’t understand any of this at all. She doesn’t deserve this. She deserves better. Here, set her on the bed. Don’t worry, it’s not like the sheets or anything are going to get wet. There’s plastic over everything in here. In case things get wet”.
Sam had the feeling that she wasn’t telling everything. But he didn’t want to pry. It’s not like he knew her personally. He set Katie down on the bed and looked around the room some more. He began to think to himself. “Poor kid, she goes through so much”. He shook himself out of his thoughts. He spoke up.
“So, do her doctor’s know what’s wrong with her? Do they know why she’s like this? She seems like a regular little girl to me.”
Nina nodded her head. Sometimes Katie seemed like any other little girl. She was trying to raise both her children by herself. Not an easy task. It was much better when Peter had been around. But he was gone now, and she’d have to do the best she could with what she had. She spoke up.
“No, they don’t know what’s wrong with her. They say it’s the strangest thing they have ever seen. But then, it comes and goes. It’s intermittent. Much like viruses are. The last time I took her in to see the doctor, he gave green all across the board. She was healthy. There was nothing wrong with her. She was able to run around, she could climb the stairs by herself without falling, and she could do her own business by herself. But now it seems, that she has reverted back to a state of almost virtual helplessness. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever”.
Sam nodded his head trying to make sense of it all. It wasn’t something that he saw everyday. But he knew children like Katie were out there. They were special in their own way. He kept looking at Jarvis for a second. Then he spoke up.
“So, would you like any help with anything? Would you like any help with Katie? It would help. I’m only saying that because we should stay with my brother. The house is not exactly safe yet. We don’t know when the angry spirit or that Shtriga will come again. So we should stick together. Here, I’ll get her socks, you get the rest”.
Katie looked at both her mother and Sam. She shook her head no. Her mother gave her a strange look. What did she mean no? No what? Katie tried her best to sit up. On her second try she succeeded. She pulled off her socks by herself. Sam and her mother only looked at each other. She spoke up.
“Mommy, I can do it myself. See”?
She pushed her mother’s hands away. She could do it herself. She had a hard time putting her dry shirt over her head. She got frustrated. She got even more upset when her mother laughed a little bit. She spoke up.
“Ay, hija, let me help you. You always seem to have trouble getting your shirt over your head. (Shakes head) Okay, that’s it; let’s put your other arm through your sleeve. There we go. See? Isn’t that better”?
Katie nodded her head; her mother knew just how to make her feel better. But so had daddy. Daddy wasn’t here anymore though. She only had mommy and Will, and Jamie. Those were the only three people she had. She spoke up once more.
“Mommy, I’m still wet.”
Nina sighed and had Sam set Katie back down on the bed again. She didn’t know what she was going to do. It broke her heart to hear those words. She was trying the best she could. Raising these kids alone wasn’t an easy task. It had become much harder now since Peter had passed on. But she’d manage. She glanced over at Sam and spoke.
“Sam, could you check on my son to see if he’s alright”?
Sam nodded his head and walked over by the door and looked into the hallway. Both Dean and Will were playing jacks. He smiled. He and Dean used to play jacks all the time when they were kids. Both Nina and Katie appeared in the doorway suddenly. Sam smiled at the two of them. Katie smiled at Sam. She liked both Sam and Dean they were really nice to her and Will and her mother too. Dean reminded her a lot of her daddy though. She walked over towards her brother and Dean and watched them playing jacks. She watched as her brother bounced the ball and picked up three of the jacks. Katie then turned her attention to Dean. She spoke up.
“Dean, can I play too”?
Dean smiled at Katie and let her sit down next to him. Surprisingly, being with these kids wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. He actually liked it. Katie scooted closer to him. He was a little uncomfortable at first. He watched Katie for a second as her facial expression changed. She hunched over for a second and hugged her knees. She began to cry. Dean looked at her and spoke up.
“Katie? What’s wrong kiddo”?
He got worried when she didn’t answer him. She began to cry harder. She looked up at her mother with her arms now outstretched for her. Nina didn’t understand any of it. Katie was acting as if she had reverted back to four years-old again. She got worried though as maybe it was a sign that something was wrong. She got a funny feeling in her gut. So, she decided to venture into the question she was turning over in her mind at the moment.
“Katie, what’s wrong sweetie? Is something wrong? Are you hurt”?
Katie shook her head no and pointed to her mother instead. Nina got a horrified look on her face suddenly. Then as if on cue, she felt a sharp pain in her stomach. Katie had seen this coming. But how? The boys didn’t know anything about that, but Jarvis did. Katie was like her “niece” Maia; she could see things before they would happen. Sam went straight over to Nina, and so did Dean who told Will to stay close. Sam was the first one to speak up.
“Dean help me with her would ya? She needs to lie down. Easy now. Be careful with her”.
Dean gave Sam a nasty look, and Sam gave him a look of pleading. Dean shook his head and turned his attention back to Jarvis. He strongly disliked seeing anyone in pain. He spoke up.
“Hey E- I mean Jarvis, you okay? You don’t look so good. What’s wrong”?
Nina could hear the concern in Dean’s voice. She began to think. Then again, maybe my son will turn out like Dean, tough exterior, but when it comes down to women, it’ll be a weakness. Now that I come to think about it, I hope he wouldn’t get some girl pregnant either… That is a scary thought… But any mother would worry about that though… She kept looking at Dean once more. She spoke up.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing. This has happened to me before. It’s nothing to worry about. It’ll stop on its own. I know it will. I went through the same thing with my son”.
Both Sam and Dean looked at her with worried expressions on their faces. They were nervous and she could tell. She shook her head. It really was nothing to worry about. It wasn’t the real thing yet. She spoke up.
“Boys, boys, like I said, it’s really nothing to worry about. I went through the same thing with my son. It’s not the real thing yet. It’s just false labor. Feels real enough though. It’ll pass on its own”.
Both men stared at her nervously for a second. Sam swallowed and kept looking at her. Sometimes there were ways of telling if it was real or not, but he wasn’t sure. He made a face and Nina picked up on that. She spoke up.
“Hey Sam, what’s wrong? You look a little pale, you okay sweetie”?
Sam shook his head in confusion. He wasn’t sure. But her tone of voice caught him off guard. She sounded so much like Ellen a moment ago. It was hard to believe. But it was true. He spoke up astonished by this.
“I’m not sure; it’s just that, you sound an awful like somebody I know… You even look like her too…”
Dean looked at Sam and shook his head. He didn’t like where Sam was going with this conversation. He didn’t like it at all. If he continued on the route he was going on now, he would embarrass himself completely. He spoke up in a kind of whisper.
“Dude, what are you doing? Please do not bring Ellen into this conversation. Please don’t”.
Sam frowned. He couldn’t help it. She looked exactly like Ellen and he wanted to tell her that. But the looks Dean was giving him, he wasn’t going to stand a chance at telling Jarvis anything at the moment. He shook his head in defeat. He spoke up changing the subject.
“It’s nothing. Um, how do you know that this is only false labor Nina”?
She shook her head, she knew the difference between real labor and false labor, and this was definantly false labor. She knew because her water hadn’t broken, and if it had, she would feel much worse than she was feeling right now. She spoke up.
“I know because if I was really in labor, I would know it. My water hasn’t broken, so that’s how I know it’s not real labor. My body is only practicing”.
Dean cringed when he heard the word practicing. Jarvis thought maybe he got a mental image in his head, so she gave him an apologetic look. She hadn’t meant it that way at all. She sat up a little bit, trying to forget about what her body was going through. It would eventually stop at some point. She just didn’t know when. She looked at both of them and apologized.
“Sorry, did I say something wrong? All I can say is, I’m a woman, it doesn’t surprise me that your embarrassed by what I said. I must have given you some sort of mental picture. It’s just like men to do that… Like talking about G…”
Sam stopped her; he knew where she was going with this conversation. It wasn’t something that should be discussed in front of her children. She straightened herself out and put on her professional attitude she used at work. She spoke up.
“Alright boys, lets get down to business then. What are our options here? Do we have any suspects”?
Sam and Dean both looked at her as if she were nuts. Dean didn’t know what to think of her at the moment. One moment she went from the mother who was ‘my children come first and I’ve just lost my husband’ to ‘I’m a professional lets get down to business now’? Sam knew who she worked for, but Dean didn’t. Dean spoke up looking at her.
“Who are you Jarvis? Are you a cop or something”?
Nina held her head high. She was proud of what she did and who she worked for. Her job wasn’t an easy one, but some one had to do it. The future had messed up big time though taking all those people. Even her little Jamie was taken. Supposedly by the future by “accident”. For seven years she lived with the pain and the loss of her first child. Then, suddenly seven years later, she gets her little Jamie back. The future gives her back without precedent. But at such a price. Her niece Rachel was taken away and presumed dead by local law enforcement. Jamie was that baby that was growing inside of her now. No one and nothing was going to take Jamie away from her again. The first time had been a mistake. She spoke up.
“I’m the Director of the Pacific Northwest Division of the National Threat Assessment Command. NTAC. My job is to oversee the protection of over 4,000 people that showed up on our doorstep by Mount Rainier on August 16th, 2004. And everything that involves them”.
Dean looked at her surprised, and then busted up laughing. He almost believed her for a second. She got a frustrated look on her face. She didn’t like being laughed at especially when she was saying something important like that. She spoke up.
“Boy, I’m telling the truth. You want proof, here, take my badge”.
Her face softened, and so did her attitude. She began to get tears in her eyes. She placed her left hand protectively over her stomach and kept it there. She let the tears fall for a moment. She spoke up.
“The only thing worse than losing my husband, was when I buried Jamie. Jamie was my first baby you know. She passed on the day the “war” started between the 4400 and the American people. For five months a group of us were locked away in a hospital room. We hid in there because we were afraid if we went out into the open, we’d be slaughtered. At one point, we almost went hungry, and then one day, we really didn’t have any food at all. The water was contaminated, and everyone was getting sick. I wasn’t my normal self, I never thought about anything else but my Jamie. After awhile, I stopped eating, and then I slept for a long time. Depression hit me pretty hard that year. It wasn’t easy for me. Jamie was taken away from me on August 15th, 2005. I got a call from the chief of police at the Seattle Police Department downtown”…
Sam and Dean both looked at her with sorry expressions on their faces. They were sorry that this had happened to her. Suddenly, they heard a noise, and then a kind of scream. Katie and Will went over to their mother and clung to her as if life itself depended on it. Dean got up and surveyed the hallway. The noise had come from the bathroom. This was going to be a long night…

Chapter 5: Panic
Author: Mancha.
Disclaimer: I do not own any character from 4400 or Supernatural. But I do own: Katie, Will, and Jamie and the dog Koda. Date Started: 1/24/07. Date Finished: 2/2/07. Hope you will all enjoy! Side Note: Okay, so I don’t know if Ellen lives in Nebraska or not, but that’s just what I heard. Other people say she lives in Wisconsin. But the logical choice would be Nebraska. Since Kansas is right below it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The scratching noise kept getting louder from somewhere down the hallway. Dean told Sam to stay with Jarvis while he went and checked it out. Sam stayed close to the small family. He kept looking at Nina. Now was his chance to say what was on his mind. He spoke up.
“What I meant to say earlier was, that you look like somebody we know in Nebraska, a woman named Ellen. She looks exactly like you. Her temperament is a little milder, not unlike you actually. She lost her husband too. A long time ago. Her daughter was a lot younger than your children, and just barely out of diapers. I’m so sidetracking here, back to the original topic here. You look like her”.
Jarvis’ eyes widened in curiosity. Another woman that looked exactly
like her. Well, there were people in the world that looked similar to themselves. She trusted Sam. Dean she wasn’t so sure about. She spoke up.
“Oh I do, do I? Well, it’s like they say, everyone in the world has someone that looks either similar to them or exactly like them. Tell me, has your brother always been like this? He seems like he’s angry all the time. Why is that”?
Sam sighed. She had said that she had met their dad once. When she had a poltergeist in her house. It would probably come as a surprise when he told her that their dad was gone. He spoke up.
“So, um, Nina, you knew my dad? You said he came here once when your daughter was much younger because there was a poltergeist in your house correct”?
Jarvis nodded her head yes. She had wondered what had happened to him and where he was. She didn’t know that he was gone. She’d find out soon enough. She spoke up.
“So, where is your dad”?
Poor Sam was getting the bad end of the deal here. Well, it was either now or let it go. He knew Dean would be upset with him later. But that didn’t matter right now. He spoke through the lump in his throat.
“Let’s just say the demon got to him before he got to it first. Dean doesn’t like to talk about it. He blames himself for all that. But it isn’t his fault. It was meant to be that way… Things happen for a reason you know”.
Jarvis’ face saddened. Not unlike the look that Ellen gave him when he told her the same thing awhile back. She shook herself out of that thought. She spoke up after straightening herself out. She put on a strong face.
“I’m so sorry Sam. You have my deepest apologizes and condolences. So that’s why Dean acts the way he does? He thinks that it’s his fault all of that happened. Don’t get me wrong, I blame myself for the loss of my niece. But her memory will live on forever. Even if my sister blames me. Nora blamed me for our brother’s drowning more than 30 years ago now”.
Sam put a hand on Jarvis’ shoulder. She smiled. She was trying to be brave. But it wasn’t like at work. But even at work, things could be unpredictable. This was even scarier though. He was still concerned about her. He spoke up once more.
“So, how are you feeling? It’s not bad is it? Because you know if it gets really bad we are going to have a hard time getting you to a hospital with that angry spirit and that Shtriga in the way. Dean and I will do the best we can to help you out”.
Jarvis nodded her head. He was right; they’d be stuck in the house if both those evil things were still there. She closed her eyes for a second and gritted her teeth. Then she grabbed for Sam’s hand and squeezed it so hard he thought it was going to break. Suddenly, Dean showed up next to him. When he spoke up, he startled Sam.
“Dude, there is nothing in the bathroom. There is however, scratching coming from the basement. That angry spirit is definantly not gone yet Sam. We need to move to a room and stay in there. How about the guest room”?
Nina nodded her head. She agreed. But would they be safe in there? All she knew was, she needed to be in bed. It was the only way she felt that the false labor would stop. She’d have to cross her fingers on that one. Both Sam and Dean helped her sit up, and then helped her to her feet. They began walking; they were only about halfway towards the guest room when she stopped them both. She spoke up.
“Wait, something doesn’t feel right here. I feel worse than before. This isn’t a good sign, not a good one at all. It’s different this time. Maybe it’ll stop when we get into the guest room. There is definantly something wrong this time. I can feel it”.
Both Sam and Dean hurried down the hallway, with Katie and Will trailing behind them both. Once they got into the room, she seemed in considerably more pain than she had been earlier. This was not a good sign. After she was in bed and under the covers, Dean began to speak to her.
“You alright? Do you need a pillow for your back or anything”?
Nina nodded her head slightly. Sam pulled a pillow from the other side of the bed and made her lean forward so that he could put it behind her back. Dean helped her lie back against the pillows. She took in a deep breath and let it out. She still didn’t feel so great. She spoke up.
“Thank you boys, I’m glad you’re trying to make me feel as comfortable as possible. But, something just doesn’t sit right about this whole thing… I don’t know if it’s because my body is trying to go into premature labor or what, but I feel like my water broke for some reason… It doesn’t make any sense…”
Both Sam and Dean’s eyes widened in horror. This was not what they had planned on. Well, there was no way that the angry spirit or the Shtriga were going to let them out, so, the logical choice was to bring someone else in. Either a paramedic or a doctor. Either one would work fine. Dean spoke up.
“Jarvis, do you want us to call a doctor for you? We could get you to a hospital, but I don’t think we’ll get very far with that angry spirit and the Shtriga in the way. Besides, can you even get out of bed? I don’t want to move you if we don’t have to”.
Jarvis shook her head. She knew someone who was a doctor. She’d have to call on her brother in-law Rob. He was a doctor, and she was pretty sure that he would be able to tell if she had really gone into labor or not. That’s all she wanted to know. She looked up at Dean and spoke up.
“I do know someone that would be able to help. Call my brother in-law Rob. He’s a doctor, he can help. Here, I’ll give you his cell phone number. When he answers, tell him that I need him to come over right away. And if he asks you who you are, say that you’re a friend. He knows nothing of what happened to my husband. Neither my sister nor Rob knows about it yet…”
Dean shook his head, and dialed the number of her brother in-law as soon as Jarvis gave it to him. He waited as the phone on the other end rang several times; he listened as someone finally picked it up. He listened as the voice on the other end spoke up.
“Doctor Robert Callahan speaking. Who is this calling”?
Dean hadn’t had any problems telling him who he was. Or, rather who he was supposed to be anyways. He thought for a second about what he was going to say. Then he spoke up.
“Yes, Doctor Callahan, my name is Dean; I’m a friend of your sister. She told me to call you in case of an emergency. More to the point, she needs you to come right away. As soon as you can if possible”.
Dean listened as Rob paused for a second, as if thinking on what he was going to say to him. He heard the man clear his throat and then he began to speak. He tried to sound calm, but it came out more frantic than he really wanted it to be.
“She’s alright isn’t she? Something’s wrong with the baby isn’t it? Okay, tell her I’ll be there as soon as I can. One more thing, did she say anything about her water breaking? Is she having contractions”?
Dean seemed a bit overwhelmed by the on slot of questions that Rob was throwing at him. But he kept a mask of calm on his face as if it didn’t really bother him. He looked over at Sam who was sitting next to the bed in a chair trying to comfort her and make sure she was alright. Dean turned his attention back to his phone and spoke up.
“Well, she did say she felt like her water broke, but she wasn’t sure. I don’t know if she’s having contractions or not… But she is in a considerable amount of pain though. We can’t move her though, so that’s why she told me to call you. She said you could help…”
Dean hung up his phone and went over towards Sam. Sam looked at him worriedly. Then he looked back over at Nina for a second. She didn’t look so good. She had closed her eyes and was shivering. She looked like she had a fever. Sam looked back over at Dean and spoke.
“Dean, she’s getting worse, she has a fever. She needs to be cooled down, and if she has gone into labor, her chances of surviving this are very low. We need to bring her fever down before it’s too late. What did her brother in-law say? He’s coming right”?
Dean nodded his head. Yes, he was coming. So, they waited. Katie and Will stayed close to their mother; they feared being separated from her by the monsters in their house. When the doorbell sounded downstairs, Katie jumped up and called out.
“I’ll get it! It’s Uncle Rob! He’s here to make mommy all better”!
For the first time in a long time, Katie ran all the way down the stairs without falling once. She opened up the door once she saw that it really was her uncle Rob. She smiled and jumped into his arms. Rob embraced her and then held her away for a second. He could see the sad look in her eyes, and he wondered what the matter with her was. He spoke up.
“Katie? What’s wrong sweetie? You look sad. What’s wrong? Where’s your daddy”?
Katie teared up when Rob mentioned her father. Rob knew nothing of what had happened to her father just recently. She hugged him tight and cried into his shoulder. She looked into her uncle’s eyes and spoke up.
“Daddy’s gone Uncle Rob. He’s not coming back”.
Katie watched as her uncle’s face fell for a minute. Rob didn’t know what she meant about that. He began to think for a second. What does she mean by he’s not coming back? I wonder, maybe Nina and Peter had a fight and he left… Maybe? But the way Katie describes it, makes it sound as if he’s dead… Rob cleared his mind and shook his head and spoke up.
“Did mommy and daddy have a fight? Did daddy leave”?
Katie shook her head no. Her mom and dad didn’t have a fight. But her daddy was gone and he wasn’t coming back. He was with grandma and grandpa now… She looked into Rob’s eyes once more and spoke up.
“No, daddy’s in heaven with grandma and grandpa Jarvis”.
Rob frowned and looked at Katie. He wanted to find out what exactly was wrong with her mother. He followed Katie upstairs who was pulling on his hand the whole way. She kept looking at him then she spoke up.
“Mommy’s sick Uncle Rob. You have to help her. She needs your help”.
Once the two got to the guest room, Rob instantly had his guard up. He stared down the two men in the room. He didn’t know who they were or why they were there. But they were invading his sister’s house, and it wasn’t right. He spoke up, looking at both Sam and Dean.
“Who are you two? And what are you doing in my sister’s house? My sister said to call me in case of an emergency. Which one of you was I speaking to on the phone? The tall one there by my sister’s bedside? Or the short one over there in the corner with my nephew Will”?
Dean cleared his throat and spoke up.
“That would be me sir. I was the one that called you. Your sister insisted that I call in case of an emergency and this is clearly an emergency”.
Rob went over to Jarvis and stood there for a second. He didn’t like seeing her like this. But, he saw people in similar conditions to her everyday. This was all routine to him. He spoke up.
“How long has she been like this? She’s got a terrible high fever. Do you know how dangerous that is for an unborn child? It’s very dangerous. We need to get her cooled down and now”.
Sam and Dean both looked at Rob with serious expressions on their faces. They knew what they had to do now. But how to do it without having the angry spirit or that Shtriga come back. On three they gently lifted Nina up without trying to wake her up. They were halfway out the door when someone nearly lost their hold on her. Rob was the first to speak up.
“Dean, hold her head up. If we all don’t have her level with all three of us, it’s only going to cause us to drop her. We don’t need that. Let’s get her into the bathroom. She’ll feel better once she’s cooled down”.
Katie hesitated as her uncle Rob, Sam, Dean and her brother Will went into the bathroom. She didn’t want to go in. Not after what had happened to her earlier. She had nearly drowned in the bathtub by something that looked like her cousin Rachel. Once all three set her mother down, Rob turned back and looked at his niece. He spoke up.
“Katie? What’s wrong sweetie? It’s okay, nothing in here is going to hurt you, I promise”.
Katie shook her head no. No, her Uncle Rob could not promise her that. There had been something in there that had tried to hurt her. Dean and Sam were the ones that had saved her. Dean looked over at Rob and spoke up.
“Actually, Rob, can I call you Rob? Katie won’t step foot in this bathroom because earlier, she nearly drowned in the bathtub. By something that looked like your daughter Rachel”.
As soon as all three of them carefully lowered Jarvis into the tub, Rob looked at Dean with tears in his eyes. How did this young man in front of him know about his little girl? How could he? He still didn’t know why the two were there for. He spoke up.
“Keep her head up and out of the water, how do you know about my daughter Rachel? Did you see her”?
Rob’s eyes got wide as Dean nodded his head. But it wasn’t like he thought. The thing that was invading this house was not his daughter. It was an evil spirit bent on destroying everyone in the house if necessary. He spoke up.
“I did see your daughter Rachel, but the fact is, what we saw here in this house earlier tonight was something evil, something that didn’t belong here. If it was your daughter, the evil spirit has taken over her body and your daughter isn’t even aware of it anymore. Or number two; it’s only an angry spirit pretending to be your daughter”.
Rob didn’t look like he believed Dean, but he would have to try for his sister’s sake. Suddenly, Jarvis was pulled under by something that was unseen. Sam and Dean knew what it was though. They struggled to pull her above the water. Rob turned to see his niece lying on the floor in the hallway outside the bathroom; she acted like she was choking on something. He went straight over to her and pulled her into his arms. He spoke up.
“Katie? What’s the matter? Katie look at me”.
Sam and Dean both looked back over at Rob, who was struggling at the moment to figure out what was wrong with Katie. This was certainly something new. Maybe it said something about it in her file somewhere. Sam was the first one to speak up.
“Rob! Turn her over on her side! She’s getting water in her lungs! Her mother and she are both connected”!
Rob did as Sam directed him to do. Both Sam and Dean turned back to Nina and finally pulled her out of the water. She turned her head for a second and spit out the water she had swallowed. She took in a breath and looked at both boys with wild eyes. She spoke up.
“You two seriously have got to get that thing out of my house now! Where’s Katie? Is she alright”?
The two watched as she tried to pull herself up, but they told her to lie back down. She needed to rest. She watched as Katie spit up the last of the water and began to cry for her mother.
“MOMMY! Tell them to make those scary things go away”!
Jarvis nodded her head; they had to get rid of those evil creatures invading their house and fast. She shut her eyes tight and groaned when she felt another sharp pain rip through her entire body. She looked at Rob with frantic eyes. She spoke up.
”Rob please, if you can help, please make the pain go away. I don’t want to be in labor yet! It’s too soon…”
Rob nodded his head and helped Katie up. He made sure that she was okay before moving over to her mother. Rob slowly made his way over to his sister and then looked at both Sam and Dean. He spoke up.
“It’s alright Nina. I’ll make sure to it that you’re comfortable if you’ve gone into labor. Let’s get you out of those wet clothes and back into bed shall we”?
Slowly all three of them lifted her up and helped her into the hallway. Will and Katie trailed behind them. Once they were all back in the guest room, and once Rob had gotten Nina back into bed, he shook his head. He was still concerned about her. He spoke up once more.
“You know, I really don’t understand you sometimes Nina… You always push yourself too far with some things. How do I know? Let’s see, Nora told me. She said that as teenagers you would came home three hours after curfew… She on the other hand, would come home right at 12 midnight”.
Jarvis crossed her arms. She was stubborn when it came to something she wanted to do. Nothing was going to stand in her way. It didn’t matter too much to her anymore because that was 1981. It wasn’t 1981 anymore. Rob sometimes was living behind the times. She spoke up holding her head high.
“Well, that was 1981. Its 2012 now Rob. You’re living a little behind the times. If I remember correctly, it was Nora, my younger sister who came home three hours after curfew. I did not. But she was only fourteen at the time and I was sixteen”.
Rob tried to imagine his wife and his sister in law breaking curfew as teenagers. He nodded his head, okay, so he couldn’t see Nina doing it, but Nora he could. She seemed more the rebel type than Nina. He spoke up.
“Okay, that aside, I need the four of you to leave the room. (Pointing to both Sam and Dean and Katie and Will) Just for a few minutes. This won’t take long I promise”.
With that, he ushered the four of them out of the room. Katie looked up at Dean and tugged on his shirt as soon as her uncle closed the door. He knelt down in front of her and listened to her question.
“Dean? Is mommy going to have Jamie? She looks scared. Jamie would look really funny if she came right now…”
Dean shook his head. He wasn’t sure. How could he explain it to her? He wasn’t sure. But he might as well try. He’d have to give it his best shot. He spoke up.
“I don’t know if your mom is going to have your sister right now. But if she is, let’s hope she’ll be okay”.
Katie nodded her head. But she was still unsure. She watched as her uncle opened up the door to the guest room. Katie peered beyond her uncle and at her mother. She was sitting up with a pillow propped up against her back. Rob knelt down in front of Katie to talk to her for a second. He spoke up.
“Katie, sweetie, mommy is just fine. But she needs to rest, and you need to be careful around her okay? She doesn’t feel good. Jamie’s okay. And no, she’s not coming right now. If she was, we would have to take mommy to the hospital”.
Rob ushered Katie and Will into the room. They went over to their mother and climbed up onto the bed and snuggled up next to her. She draped her arms around both of them. She couldn’t live without her children. Her whole world would come crashing down if she lost them too, to these unearthly things that roamed the halls of this house. She had already lost the love of her life, and she wasn’t about to bury two more. Or even three. She had to keep all three alive. Even if that meant trying to protect her youngest, Jamie, from coming into the world too soon. She watched as Rob, Sam, and Dean came into the room. They all still looked concerned, but, they didn’t look alarmed like before when all three thought she was in labor. Nina watched carefully as Rob closed the door behind them. Her eyes grew big as she saw something standing behind Rob. It wasn’t the angry spirit that looked like Rachel; it was the Shtriga that took her husband Peter away. Her eyes grew bigger still as the Shtriga got closer to Rob. That’s when everything came back to her all at once. The Shtriga hovering over Peter seconds before he was so rudely taken from this earth before his time. She saw the Shtriga sucking the life out of her husband. She saw him reaching for her seconds before he left this earth. And then he was gone. She shut her eyes and began to cry. She couldn’t go through that again. She wouldn’t know how to tell her sister that she had just become a widow too. Sam and Dean saw the Shtriga, and Dean went and grabbed for the salt gun. He got the Shtriga square in the back. But nothing happened. It now had a hold over Rob. Sam watched in horror and worry as the Shtriga began to take Rob’s life away. Katie and Will both hid their faces in their mother’s pillow. The two were afraid that they would be taken away by the same thing that took away their daddy. Dean shot at the Shtriga once more and it dissolved right in front of him. It let go of its grip on Rob letting his body fall to the floor. Jarvis opened up her eyes and looked at Rob. She continued to cry. She cried louder, she didn’t know if he was dead or alive anymore. She made a sound between a strained gasp and a sob when she saw Rob move a little. He shook his head a little as he gained his bearings around him. He spoke up in a raspy voice.
“W-what happened? I feel like I’ve just gone twelve rounds with a stubborn
mule”.
Both Sam and Dean helped Rob up and into a chair next to the bed. He looked over at Nina who was still crying. He could clearly see that she was upset. She needed to calm herself down. This sort of thing would throw her into premature labor if she wasn’t careful. He placed a hand on her shoulder and spoke up.
“Nina, you need to calm down. Being upset like this, it isn’t going to help you at all. The more upset you become the more likely you’re going to cause yourself to go into premature labor. Take it easy. It’ll be alright. Remember what I told you? It’s only false labor right now. But it could very well turn into the real thing if you don’t calm down okay? I don’t want to have to rush you to the hospital and into the emergency room because of early labor”.
Jarvis nodded her head. Rob was right. But she couldn’t help it. The last two days alone she had been upset. Rob looked at her with wide eyes. He spoke up.
“Nina? What was that? Is that what killed Peter? That thing that tried to kill me”?
Nina nodded her head. She teared up when Rob began speaking of Peter. She missed him terribly. She swallowed hard and closed her eyes. She shifted her weight a little to get comfortable again. She spoke up.
“Yes, that was the thing that took Peter away from me. He… He tried to te… No, not yet… Couldn’t you wait a little longer Jamie? I can’t have you yet… It’s too soon…”
Rob looked at her with wide eyes. He didn’t like the sound of where this conversation was going. Sam and Dean both looked at each other. Dean spoke up.
“Great, this is just what we need right now. I don’t know how we’re going to get her out of here. That Shtriga that was in here, I know it’s not gone yet. I only wounded it. It’ll be back, and as for that angry spirit, its still here because you can hear scratching in the basement. This is just great. Okay, Rob stay with her Sam and I will go and boil some water”.
Katie and Will pulled both their heads away from their mother’s pillows. Katie was the first one to look at her mother strangely. She spoke up with a scared look in her eyes.
“Mommy? Why is the bed all wet? Is Jamie coming”?
She looked at both Katie and Will and gave them both a kiss on the forehead with tears in her eyes. Then the two looked over at their uncle. He spoke to them both.
“Okay you two, I need you two to go sit over their by the door and watch out for Sam and Dean. I’ll take care of mommy okay”?
Katie and Will both nodded their heads. Katie turned back to her mother and started to cry. Nina looked at Katie and shook her head. She spoke up.
“It’s okay sweetie, mommy will be just fine. Uncle Rob is going to take care of both mommy and Jamie okay”?
Katie nodded her head and waited with her brother by the doorway to the guest room. Both of them watched as both Sam and Dean came back into the room with some boiled water. Rob had gone into the bathroom and then came back with a damp washcloth. He placed it on Jarvis’ forehead and kept it there. She spoke up.
“I’m sorry that this had to happen this way Rob. Really I am. I hadn’t meant for any of this to happen at all. I think all the stress has caused this to happen. What am I supposed to…? OW! Rob please help me! Get this baby out of me! NOW”!
Rob nodded his head and told her to calm down. He told her to try and relax. It would help her in the long run. She gazed at him with hazy vision. She spoke up once more.
“Rob? How can you be so calm! You’re not the one giving birth here”!
Rob nodded his head once more. She was right about that. She was the one doing all the work. He was just helping her feel more comfortable. He’d help bring this child into the world, but she’d be the one doing all the work. He spoke up trying to sound calm.
“Okay, Nina, I want you to try and relax alright? Try to relax and breathe. There you go, that’s it. Good girl”.
She closed her eyes to try and regain her bearings once more. This time was so much harder than it had been with her son. Will had been relatively easy compared to this. Maybe because it was earlier than expected that it was that much harder. She didn’t know. She listened as Rob spoke to her once more.
“There we go, keep breathing. There you go. Your doing great. I guess all those Lamaze classes really helped you out didn’t they”?
She cringed. Peter had asked her the same question a month before they were married. It was a little while after she had mysteriously fallen ill to something that no doctor in the world could identify or even explain to her. And even then she felt like the guinea pig. She knew she had to bring this child into the world, but then she also knew that Jamie would have to stay in the neo-natal intensive care unit until she reached the full size of a baby born full term. She spoke up.
“Rob, we have to get Jamie to the hospital. She won’t survive more than a few minutes if we stay here. We have to find a way to get out of this house and destroy those evil things. It has to be done”.
Rob got an idea suddenly, he didn’t know if it was going to work or not, but he hoped that it would. He had that twinkle in his eye. Nina had seen it hundreds of times before. She listened as he spoke up.
“You know, there could just very well be a way to save the both of you… There is a way to stop the labor, but you would have to be on bed rest for the next two months. That would give Jamie the chance to go to full term. I think it’s worth a try don’t you”?
Jarvis nodded her head. Anything to make sure that her Jamie was safe. She had to make sure of that. She had to ensure the protection of all three of her children. Their safety came first. She shut her eyes for a second and grabbed onto Sam who happened to be standing there at that exact moment. She shook her head as she spoke up once more.
“Rob, I don’t think we’re going to have time for that, Jamie’s coming whether we like it or not.”
Rob shook his head and thought for a second. This is going to be a tough one to call. I’m going to have to keep my options open here. We have to find a way to get them out of here. Jamie needs it the most though. I heard what Nina said, Jamie won’t survive more than a few minutes here. We need to get her to the hospital. He snapped himself out of his thoughts we he heard her begin to cry. He spoke up.
“Okay, let’s take this one step at a time Nina. I need you to relax. There you go. Clear your mind. It’ll help a little. Focus on your breathing. That’ll help too… We’re going to need to wrap her in a blanket and keep her warm. At least until the paramedic’s get here. Keep her close to you”.
She nodded her head seriously. She was ready. It was too soon, but she was still ready. She’d have to make due with what she had available to her at the moment. She took a deep breath and let it out. This was going to be a long night. She spoke up.
“I’m ready when you are Rob. Just say the word, and I’m there”.
Rob nodded his head and shifted himself in front of her. He watched as his sister in-law swallowed and took another breath. He nodded his head encouragingly. She was doing just fine. He spoke up.
“Okay, now, I want you to push as hard as you can alright? Okay, relax yourself completely. Think of a time when you were the most happy in your life. Try to think of all the positive aspects of that time in your life”.
Nina nodded her head, she began to think. Peter… When I met Peter for the first time. He took care of me. He made sure that I took everything I needed for this kid… He made me a very happy woman. It’s hard to find men like that these days, who will see you for who you really are and not just for pleasure either. She snapped out of it when she heard Rob say something.
“Oh, that could be a problem… We have a breach. Jamie is deciding she wants to come out feet first. Hold on, you might feel a little uncomfortable for a second… But this won’t take long.”
Jarvis closed her eyes once more and tried to think of Peter again to get her mind off of that. Peter was such a caring man. He always made sure that the kids and I were all safe. He had that kind face and those kind eyes. I’m glad I married an honest man. He was such a wonderful and caring person. She looked at Rob with tears in her eyes as she looked at the baby in his arms. She began to think to herself once more. She’s so tiny. What’s that around her neck? She shook herself out of her thoughts and looked at Rob and her baby closer. Rob spoke up.
“Don’t worry; this is an easy thing to fix. I can have the umbilical cord from around her neck in a second. There we go. She may be a little small, but she’s still a beautiful baby. Boys, I need you to wrap her in a towel. She needs to be kept warm. She has a weak cry. Well, what do you expect; she’s not full term yet”.
Sam and Dean wrapped Jamie in a towel and took her to her mother. Jarvis held her close. She had to keep her warm. She listened to her daughter’s weak crying and tried to soothe it. But to no avail. She tried once more, but she figured that she was crying for something that she couldn’t give her just yet. She heard her cell phone ring suddenly. Sam reached for it and gave it to her. She shifted Jamie a little bit and answered it.
“Jarvis. Diana, I haven’t heard from you in a while, how are you”?
Nina listened to the voice on the other end. She sighed and tried to quiet Jamie’s cries. Diana seemed concerned for her now. It was probably because she heard a baby crying in the background that made her worry.
“Nina? Is that a baby I hear in the background? That’s not Jamie is it”?
Jarvis closed her eyes. She wished to the lucky stars it hadn’t been. She couldn’t help it if Jamie had been born early. It was the stress that was bothering her, and it had caused this to happen. She really needed to get to the hospital and fast.
"Yes, that’s Jamie. I need to find a way to get to the hospital. Jamie needs more oxygen. She’s going to end up staying in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Saint Michaels. I was stressed out over Peter’s sudden death and it caused me to go into premature labor. And here Jamie is. But she can’t stay here. She needs to get to the hospital and fast. I don’t know what I can do for her. She cries because she’s hungry. But she can’t feed yet because she can’t even suckle yet. This is just a disaster. How soon can you be here? Once you’re in here though, I don’t know how easy it is to get back out again. There are things in this house that you only see in your nightmares. I know, because one of those things killed my husband”.
She listened as Diana hung up the phone. She hung her phone up also and looked back over at Rob. He looked slightly worried for her. She kept looking at him strangely. Something was the matter. She didn’t know it yet though. She listened as he spoke up.
“Nina, we really need to get you to the hospital. You are showing all the signs of hemorrhaging. I’m calling 9-1-1. Stay put. Well, that’s kind of a dumb understatement there. Of course you’re not moving anywhere. You can’t even get out of bed”.
Jarvis shook her head. This was no time for humor. She looked at Sam and Dean both who were keeping a lookout for both her and the two evil creatures that walked the halls of her house. Keeping guard was all they could do… Sam and Dean both looked back over at Jamie. Sam made a face between pity and something else. Her cries made him cringe. He listened at Nina spoke to Jamie.
“I know your hungry sweetie. But mommy can’t give you any food. I could try. But I don’t know how well you’ll do.”
She tried her best, but she knew that Jamie just couldn’t do it. Suddenly, a noise from down the hallway startled them, then what sounded like someone screaming from the outside the door. Nina kept herself covered and held Jamie closer to her. Sam and Dean both looked at each other. Dean spoke up.
“We’re going to have to get reinforcements because we’re out of salt”.
To be continued…
A/N: Was this a little blah? I felt that this chapter was missing a little something, like more action… I made this chapter a little more family oriented…

Nina felt some one shaking her awake, and Jamie’s crying seemed to quiet. Her eyes shot open and she looked around the room. She was looking for Jamie. She looked at Rob strangely for a second. She wasn’t sure about things here. She spoke up.
“Rob? Where’s Jamie”?
Rob looked at her and took out a thermometer and took her temperature. He waited for it to beep. He then took it out of her mouth, and shook it a little bit. Then he read it out loud.
“Hmm. Normal. You want to know where Jamie is? I’ll show you, she’s right here”.
She watched carefully as Rob placed the fetal heart monitor on top of her stomach. Jarvis smiled when she heard Jamie’s steady heartbeat. She began to think to herself. She’s alright. But then, I was only dreaming. I do strongly dislike dreams of that magnitude. She smiled at Rob and spoke up.
“I had the strangest dream just now… I dreamt that I had gone into premature labor…”
Rob looked at her strangely. He wondered if she had hit her head on something. She didn’t understand what was going on at the moment. She spoke up.
“Rob, what’s going on? What happened to me”?
She tried to move her head away from Rob when he grabbed her face with his hands. He looked at her closely. He looked into her eyes and then checked her head for any bumps or anywhere that she might have hit her head. He spoke up.
“No concussion. You passed out. That evil spirit grabbed a hold of you and about killed you. It was taking your life away. Sam here shot and wounded it, its going to take some work to get rid of it… But were trying. It knocked you out. I had to make sure that the baby wasn’t hurt. Apparently she wasn’t affected by any of this. Well, obviously if she’s got a strong heartbeat. Here, I want you to lean forward for a second. I noticed that your breathing sounded strange earlier when you were out cold”.
Now it was Nina’s turn to look at Rob strangely. She was fine. She stayed quiet while Rob listened to her breathing. She watched as both her children sat on the floor of the guest room playing with the dog. Koda was a big dog, but he was gentle with children. She got him for Katie when she begged her mother for a dog. She laughed a little as Katie laughed when Koda began giving her sloppy wet dog kisses on her face. She listened as she spoke up.
“Ew! Koda! Don’t kiss me! Go give mama kisses”!
Jarvis laughed some more, Koda came walking slowly over to her. He whined a little. Then he put a paw on the bed and lay his head by her hand. He was being gentle with her. He knew that she wasn’t feeling well. She spoke up when he barked.
“What do you want Koda? Are you hungry? Maybe I’ll have one of the boys feed you. I’ll have Dean feed you. He seems comfortable with dogs. Go with him. No Koda, I don’t want any kisses from you right now. Go on”.
Koda went after Dean when he opened up the door. They all listened as Dean raced Koda down the stairs. Koda could make such a racket sometimes. But he loved to play. Sam looked back over at Rob.
“Is she going to be okay”?
Rob nodded his head yes, she was going to be fine. She needed to stay calm. Relaxing was what she really needed. This whole situation had been stressful on every one. He spoke up looking at Sam.
“She’s going to be just fine. She needs to relax is all. Stress is not good for her. That baby is everything to her. She must keep herself calm as much as possible”.
Nina looked back at Rob and laughed at him. She was keeping herself calm. What did Rob think? That she was nuts? Of course not. She was perfectly capable of keeping herself calm. But the only other person that used to tell her that was Peter. How she missed him terribly. She spoke up.
“Rob, you know me, I’m the tough one. I’m used to being the tough one in a situation like this. Well, at work anyways. But I’m not at work though. Sam was asking me earlier about Will. He’s in for a very long story”.
Rob put a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t have to tell the story if she didn’t want to. But she wanted to. She felt it was one that had to be told. The whole world already knew about it, what’s one more person? She spoke up.
“Well Sam, you wanted to know about my son Will, let’s start out at the beginning shall we? My son came into the picture long before I met Peter. Only five short years before. I hadn’t known about him until the early morning hours of December 16th, 2006. My niece was the one who told me about my son. I didn’t believe her at first, I thought it was just some harmless joke on her part. That is until I had my doctor run an ultrasound on me, and it revealed that I was pregnant. How? Well, that’s an even deeper story. You see, the future took me, used a business man from the future and then they used me too… I didn’t know about it… I didn’t want to know about it… I don’t like to think of it… Sometimes I think that the future was only joking about the business man from the future, because my son looked a lot like my husband Peter. But no one ever admitted that. Not even the future. And they had made the error. I don’t even think Peter knew that. But more to the point here, I didn’t know about him until about a month into my pregnancy. I considered him a miracle. He was my gift. I was so happy. No one I had ever worked with had ever seen me look that happy before. I basked in my happiness for about two hours before a near tragedy struck and nearly left me without a son. I was rushed into the emergency room where I stayed for a few hours until they could figure out what was wrong with me. Apparently, the umbilical cord which attached my son to me was pinched shut in the middle. They fixed the problem. But the point is, I nearly miscarried my son. I don’t know what I would have done if he wasn’t here today. I was transferred back to a room so that I could rest. Then about two hours later, it happened again, by this time I could no longer control myself. I screamed the whole time. But this time it only lasted five minutes. Then I was alright, and my son was still there. I didn’t have anymore episodes like that the rest of the time. Mostly dizzy and fainting spells much like I get now. Everything went smoothly up until my eighth month, that’s when the false labor kicked in. It was towards the end of my eighth month, so I only had to stay in bed for three weeks until my sons due date. It was the end of June and it was unseasonably warm in 2007. Almost three weeks went by without incident, that is up until three days before my son’s birth on July 14th, 2007; a man named “Bob” broke into my house to take valuables, but took me instead. For three days, I sat in a dark and dirty basement in a boarded up old house. Shortly after he took me away, my water broke and I went into labor with my son, and for three days, I sat on the floor of that dark and dirty basement and tried to deal with it the best I could. At one point I had even considered delivering him myself. But then what good would that have done? I would have gone to such drastic measures as that but, I knew that it wouldn’t do me any good, I would have only put the both of us in harms way. By the third day, I was severely dehydrated. I could barely stay awake. The only thing that was keeping me awake at that point was my contractions. When the cops and NTAC found me, I was barely coherent. Once they got me back to medical, I delivered my son within a matter of thirty minutes. But it didn’t hurt in the least. It was an easy birth. The ordeal that both my son and I went through still haunts me to this very day, five years later. But I know that Bob will be in jail for the rest of his life hopefully for first degree kidnapping”.
Sam could only stare at her. She had been through a whole lot. But that’s what made her the tough woman she was. She was now a single parent was her children alone once more. She had said she had met her husband only after her son was born five years later. He spoke up.
“Nina, I’m so sorry. That must have been horrible for you. I’m glad that nothing went wrong with Will though”.
She smiled at Sam. He was the kind one. Dean was caring too. But he was more tough like Nina was. He figured that it was better than being something that he wasn’t. She picked up a picture that was on her nightstand next to the bed. She smiled and looked at it carefully. She spoke up.
“You see this? Wasn’t Will a beautiful baby? Although, we couldn’t get him to stop screaming for one minute. July 17th, 2007 was the happiest day in my life. But as you can see, I wasn’t up to par. I was found and brought in filthy. If I hadn’t been brought in, I would have lost my life”.
Sam looked at her with sympathy. Then he smiled at the picture. He loved babies. He looked at the picture some more. He studied the detail of the picture. He looked at it closer. He saw a shadow in the picture. He spoke up.
“Hey Nina? What’s that shadow in the background? Look at it closely”.
She shrugged her shoulders; it was probably just a camera glitch. She didn’t think anything of it. But then, when she really got to thinking about it, that shadow wasn’t in the picture. She spoke up.
“It’s probably just a glitch in the background. But then again, now that you mention it, that shadow hasn’t been there before. I think this soul sucker, or whatever it is, had plans to get rid of me. Permanently”.
Sam shook his head just as Dean came into the room. He looked at Sam as if he had missed the most important conversation in the whole world. He walked over towards him and spoke up.
“Well Sammy, what do we have here? Are we trading stories? Touching Sam, let’s get back to business. That Shtriga and that angry spirit are still out there. We have to take every measure possible to protect Jarvis. That angry spirit and that Shtriga are both after that baby she’s carrying. We have to keep close tabs on her at all times. Is that understood Sammy”?
Sam nodded his head yes. He understood what had to be done now. His brother had just stated the obvious. Then he shook his head once more. Dean looked at him with serious but determined eyes. Sam spoke.
“Yeah, sure Dean, what ever you say. You’re the boss”.
Dean looked over at Rob with concerned eyes. He was concerned about how Jarvis was doing. She looked alright at the moment, but he wanted to check and make sure with Rob first. He spoke up.
“How’s she doing Rob? She’s doing okay right? She’s not like bleeding or anything is she? I don’t want to have to deal with that. I don’t like to see women cry ya know? It doesn’t do for me”.
Rob nodded his head solemnly. Dean didn’t know how exactly how to react to that. His eyes darted from left to right for a second. But then he composed himself. He listened to what Rob had to say.
“She’s doing fine Dean; all she needs is a little rest. And no, she’s not bleeding. What a horrible mess that would be if she was…”
Dean looked away nervously for a second. He didn’t like conversations that made him nervous. He then straightened himself out. He spoke up.
“Well, that’s a good sign. Sam and I are going to keep post around the clock to find those two evil s… Or I mean things and destroy them for good. Even if it means going to the store and buying salt in bulk it we have to”.
Nina looked at him with humor in her eyes and began to laugh. That was the funniest thing that she had ever heard. Dean looked at her seriously. She stopped laughing and straightened herself out. She spoke up.
“Sorry, you boys were being serious weren’t you? Don’t worry, from now on, I’ll let you boys do what you do best. Get the things that go bump in the night. Don’t mind me. I’m only background noise”.
Jarvis threw the blankets off of her suddenly. She was hot. It was stifling in the room for her. She had already ordered Rob to change the temperature of the furnace at least six different times already. Meanwhile, she was boiling, and everyone else was freezing their behinds off. Katie and Will had put on their warmest clothes. She sprayed some water on her face from a little squirt bottle she had on the side table. She spoke up.
“Is anyone else in here as hot as I am? It’s stifling in here. Someone open a window. I feel like I’m suffocating this heat is so bad…”
All of them stared at her as if she were nuts. The window? Rob had already turned the air conditioning up a lot already. The window was just going to make it that much cooler in the room. But she didn’t care. She wanted it to be relaxing, not stifling. She listened as Dean spoke up.
“I never thought I’d be saying this to a woman who was seven months pregnant, but, listen lady; it’s not hot in here. In fact, were freezing our a… Or I mean freezing our behinds off here. I know it’s the middle of May but could we turn the heat up just a little? Please”?
She got tears in her eyes. Its not like Dean was being mean to her or anything. It was these horrible mood swings. One minute she was happy, and then the next she was sad or angry. Right now she was sad. She let the tears fall. She spoke through her tears.
“Is it so much to ask that I want the air conditioning on? Or that I want a half a pint of strawberry ice cream from the mini mart six blocks away? Or have some one massage my feet? Well, is it? I can’t help it if my feet hurt, or that I can’t get comfortable when I want to, or that I want my juice in a glass with a curly straw instead of a regular one”?
Dean backed away from her a little bit. He didn’t like women getting all hysterical on him. It made him very nervous. Sam on the other hand, he seemed like he could handle it better than he could. He spoke to her gently. Somehow, he knew how to handle this situation.
“Would you like me to go out and get you a pint of strawberry ice cream? If that’s what you want, I can go out and get it for you…”
Sam watched as her eyes sparkled. He’d really do that for her? He’d really do that? That’s not the only thing she wanted. She wanted some red licorice too. Sam was willing to that for her too if she really wanted it. She spoke up once more.
“Oh, and Sam? Could you get me some red licorice too? And some pixie sticks, and some sour gummy worms”?
Sam looked at her with wide eyes. She’d have to write all that down. He was never going to remember all that otherwise. He didn’t understand how a woman could eat so much. He spoke up.
“Hey Nina? Could I get you to write all that down? That’s so much to remember and by the time I get there, I don’t think I’ll remember it all”.
Nina nodded her head with a slight smirk on her face. She laughed a little, and then she found a piece of paper and a pencil and wrote down everything she wanted on the paper. She sprayed her face with the spray bottle again. She was still boiling. Too many heat flashes. She spoke up.
“Here you go Sam. And while you’re at it, could you add ice to the list? We’re all out and I could use some right about now. Oh and some ginger ale. My stomach is giving me fits right now”.
Sam nodded and added the last two things to the list. He made his way towards the guest room door; he opened it, but then thought the better of it and closed it again. He wanted to make sure those were all the things that she wanted. He spoke up.
“Are those all the things you want? Is there anything else you really need”?
She nodded her head and told him to hurry. She was hungry and she wanted a little pick me up. Sam knew that she would change her mind as soon as he showed her the stuff that she wanted. He knew she would. She was pregnant, and pregnant women were always changing their minds on what they wanted at that exact moment in time.
She watched as Sam closed the door. She sighed and closed her eyes. Then she opened them and spoke up.
“Oh this kid, I swear doesn’t let me have peace fore one minute. First she’s kicking my ribs, and now, she’s pushing against my bladder. I’ll be right back”.
Dean and Rob watched as she slowly made her way towards the bathroom and closed the door behind her. The two looked at each other. Dean was the first to speak.
“Has your sister always been like this”?
Rob shook his head no. She hadn’t always been like this. She was the tough one in the family. She was the tough cookie. She could handle almost anything you threw her way. He spoke up.
“No, I’m afraid she hasn’t always been this way. She’s actually the tough one in the family. She’s seen a lot and also been through a lot. She’s worried she’ll go into labor two months early. I’m more worried about her going into labor two weeks late. She’s more and more likely headed that way every day”.
Dean nodded his head. They had to keep an eye on her. She was who they had to protect. Not only her, but her baby as well. They watched as she came back and lay back down on the bed. She began to complain some more.
“It’s too hot in here Rob; could you turn the air conditioning up more”?
Rob sighed, but he promised himself that he’d make his sister as comfortable as possible. He wrapped his coat around himself tighter and went towards the door and into the hallway. He bumped the switch up a few notches. Then he came back into the room.
“Better Nina? Tell me if you get cold I’ll turn the heater back on okay”?
She nodded her head, and then sprayed the water from the spray bottle on her face some more. She was still boiling. She got out of bed one more time. This time she walked over towards the window and opened it up. She felt the cool breeze on her face.
“Ah, much better. If either of you touch this window, I’m having both of you sleep downstairs tonight. That’s where the most activity happens anyways is downstairs”.
Both Dean and Rob looked at each other. They sure as heck didn’t want to sleep downstairs. She crossed her arms over her chest. They all waited for Sam to come back from the store.
Elsewhere at the mini mart…
“That’s a lot of stuff ya got there sir. Let me guess, your children asked for candy because its movie night”?
Sam shook his head no. He knew the man was going to ask about what all the stuff was for. He might as well tell him. He thought the man had already figured out why he had gotten all the stuff in the first place. He spoke up.
“Well, all this stuff is actually for my aunt. She’s seven months pregnant and she’s constantly asking for all these sweet things. I never know what to get her. One minute it’s ‘get me a pint of rocky road’ and then the next is ‘get me a pint of strawberry ice cream’. She asked me for red licorice, she’ll probably want black by the time I get back home. I’m sorry sir, what’s the total again”?
The man smiled at Sam and told him one more time what his total was again.
“Your total comes to $9.75. Have a nice day”.
Sam smiled at the man and walked out of the mini mart with the groceries. Now all he had to do was go back to Nina’s house six blocks away. It shouldn’t be too hard to find in the dark.
Meanwhile, back at the house, Nina looked around the room, she seemed nervous. But she didn’t quite know why though. She took a deep breath to calm herself. She smiled when she saw Sam come into the room. She spoke up.
“Am I ever glad to see you, did you get the stuff I asked for”?
Sam smiled and went over and sat on the bed for a second. He took the red licorice, sour gummy worms, the strawberry ice cream and some pixie sticks. He spoke up.
“Sorry I couldn’t get you some Ginger Ale, they were all out, and I even asked the store manager if he had any extra in the back store room. He said they aren’t getting any in until tomorrow morning. But I got your sour gummy worms, your pint of strawberry ice cream, your pixie sticks, and your red licorice. Am I missing anything”?
Nina made a face at Sam. Of course he was missing something. He forgot to get her a bag of sun flower seeds. She started to tear up. Then she spoke.
“You didn’t get my sun flower seeds…”
Sam looked down, but Rob put a hand on his shoulder telling him it was okay. He was more annoyed than disappointed. But he didn’t show it. He spoke up.
“Don’t worry about it Sam. Nina, I’ll go find you some sun flower seeds”.
Two months later
“Come on Sam! We’ve almost got this ugly sucker! It has to be in this basement somewhere! I mean I saw it come down here! We’ve already got the angry spirit; all we need to do is nail this ugly soul sucker”!
Sam couldn’t have agreed more. They had been stuck with protecting Jarvis for two months, and any day now she’d go into labor. Rob had been right, she was two weeks late, everyone was on edge just waiting for the time to come. Both Sam and Dean looked all over the basement for the Shtriga, but could find no sign of it. Suddenly, they heard noise coming from the guest room upstairs. The two ran up the basement stairs and shut the door and locked it behind them. Then they ran up the stairs and burst into the guest room. Wow, there were a lot of doctor’s in here… Sam peered around the many nurses and doctors. Oh, it was time alright. July 30th, 2012 seemed to be the magic date. He swallowed hard when he saw Jarvis struggling. He began to think to himself. Why on earth would women in general want to have a home delivery? I guess familiar surroundings help them. He shook himself out of his thoughts when Dean spoke up.
“Dude Sam, this is just plain awkward. We should you know, give Jarvis some privacy; I’m pretty sure she doesn’t want us standing over her shoulder while she’s having this baby. We’ve protected her this long, and I think its time we found this Shtriga and leave. We’ve been in this house long enough”.
Suddenly, the Shtriga showed itself and made its way towards Jarvis, Sam and Dean pushed a few nurses out of the way so they could get to the Shtriga before it could get the chance to get to Jarvis first. Sam told every one to get down. One doctor told Nina to keep her focus on her breathing. To ignore everything that was around her at the moment. Dean shot at the Shtriga and wounded it. He shot it a second time as it lunged at Nina. He got it. It then disappeared. She looked up at Dean and spoke up through gasps of breath.
“Is, is it gone”?
Dean nodded his head. He thought so. He knew it was gone. There was no more scratching to be heard in the basement that’s how he knew that it was finally over. Jarvis closed her eyes and hissed in pain for a second. Then she opened them back up and gritted her teeth. She’d get through this. She had to. Sam sat down next to her and spoke up.
“It’s okay, your doing fine. Relax yourself. That’s it, good girl. Focus on something positive in your life. Your two kids, Katie and Will. They would want you to be positive. I know you can do it. Keep breathing. There you go, your doing great. You’re almost through. Relax now”.
Before Jarvis knew it, she began to hear a baby cry. She smiled through her tears and then began to laugh a little. Then she began to laugh a lot. Once her daughter was cleaned off and placed into her arms, she let more tears fall, Jamie was beautiful. She spoke up.
“You are the most beautiful baby I have ever seen. Your name is Abigail Jamie Jarvis. Welcome to the world sweetheart”.
Sam looked at the small bundle that was Jamie in Nina’s arms. He smiled. Dean on the other hand, only looked nervously around the room. He didn’t feel like he belonged there anymore and he knew it was now time to move on. He listened as his brother Sam spoke up.
“Nina, she’s beautiful. I hope you tell Jamie all about us when she gets older. She’ll want to know. Her father would be so proud to have a daughter. Especially Jamie. I’m sure he’s smiling down at you right now. Well, I think its best if Dean and I pack up and get going now. We’ve well overstayed our welcome here at your home Nina. We don’t feel like we should be intruding anymore. Best of luck in raising your children. And I’m glad we finally brought justice to your husband’s death. We would hope that you wouldn’t have to call on us again, but if you ever need our help with anything, just give Dean and I a call alright”?
With that Sam and Dean packed up their stuff and threw it into the back of their car. Dean started the car and shut the car door. Sam followed suit and shut the passenger side door. He spoke up.
“You know Dean; I think that Nina was a nice woman. I’m glad we got to know her as well as we did. I’m glad we could protect her as well as we did. She and that baby were the most important things on the list to take care of in that house. I know what you’re thinking Dean. You thought she was bossy. She was pregnant Dean, she couldn’t help it. She was grateful for our help. And she said thank-you. Most of the jobs we do, people usually never tell us thank you. We should be so lucky…”
“Yeah, whatever Sammy.”
The End.
