Title: Stone Cold Heart of a Warrior
Description: After "Greener"
kburch04 - December 4, 2006 06:51 AM (GMT)
Ok, so I've typed a bit of my newest story. I would like to thank my super secret squirrel partner for reading it over and making sure it was ok!! Luv ya girl!!!
This takes place after "Greener on the Other Side", which takes place after "Got Them Old Prison Blues" over in the horror/ghost section.
I don't think you have to read those two before this one, but it might make more sense lol. Plus I love me some new readers!!! ;)
Normal Disclaimer: I don't own any part of Supernatural, which you guys should probably be glad for, I would never let the boys out in public...they'd be too tired lol.
So, enjoy!! I should have more up maybe soon. I'm still having fun taking a vacation over in the humor section, but I wanted to get the ball rolling on this one.
~~~~~~
He spread his wings as far as they would stretch, and let his agile body float through the sky. It felt good to get out, to soar above the city below him. He spent all day cooped up, so really the night time was his life.
Snippets of conversations below him floated up to his sensitive ears. He could hear everything with crystal clear precision, but he chose to ignore all of it. It was not his place to meddle; it was not his place to intervene. He was merely just there, enjoying his own piece of the night.
A faint scream echoed from below, catching his attention. His protective mode immediately kicked in, spurring him into action. He folded his wings against his tall, lean body, and fell from the sky, cutting through the air. The wind whistled past him, throwing his long black hair into a chaotic dance behind him. At the last moment, he spread his wings, catching himself.
He gracefully landed, folding his wings around him once more. He glared at the human in front of him. He held a small girl in his arms, her glassy lifeless eyes pleaded silently with him, pleaded for help he could not provide. He was too late.
“About time you showed up,” the human growled.
He took a step back. His senses went into over-drive, and he could smell the evil as it radiated from the human in front of him, swirling around him.
The human’s jaw dropped open, his eyes darkened and his body began to slacken. In horrid fascination, he continued to watch the human. Just before the human’s body could fall to the ground, it jerked rigid as a black cloud spewed from his mouth.
He took another step back. The cloud flew towards him, consuming him. A burning pain filled his body, making him tremble. He bit his lip to keep from crying out. Then, he was pushed aside.
He was no longer in control.
“Ah, the power,” he heard his voice, watched as his eyes lowered, studying his own body. “The power of a gargoyle.”
You guys are too sweet. :D
I was excited to start on this story, and have had ideas floating around in my head for some time now.
I have also been doing my research, and someone somewhere at Google is wondering wtf I am searching for I'll bet haha.
The one page I found the most useful was this one:
http://www.stratis.demon.co.uk/gargoyles/g...y-hist-myth.htmI am working on this one now, just letting my fingers flow haha. And of course, I am still working on the humor one. I should have an update on this one soon though.
And wow, this is my
666th comment...heh heh heh...
So thank you everyone for showing your enthusiasm!!
I'll see you soon!!
kburch04 - December 7, 2006 07:16 AM (GMT)
Ok, what the heck, I'll post some now. I know this is short, but I'm going to take my time on this story so I can really let loose...hahahahaha...if that makes sense lol.
Thanks once again guys for all of the enthusiasm shown for this story. I think it's going to be a good one. :D
~~~~~~
He didn’t think he’d had more than twelve hours of sleep in the past month. His skin had taken on a grayish pale tone and his eyes were shaded, haunted. His clothes didn’t fit right anymore, finally forcing him to purchase a belt. He had no appetite, nothing appealed to him anymore. Sounds were dimmed, colors were darkened. He felt numb inside, cold and dark.
Dean knew Sam wasn’t fine. Sam hadn’t been fine since he’d returned from that place, the hell Dean himself had condemned him to. He knew Sam was trying to put on a brave façade, but he had never been very good at it. Every emotion the man felt could clearly be seen on his face. Lately he had shown no emotions, which concerned Dean even more.
He wished Sam would just finally lash out, say or do something, he wished his brother would just open up. He wasn’t one for emotion sharing time, but right now he’d call Dr. Phil himself if it meant Sammy would be ok. He didn’t even react to be called that anymore.
Sure he'd opened a few times, showing the true depth of the agony he was in. But it hadn't been enough. Dean wanted to see more from his brother, wanted his brother to forgive himself for whatever he was condemning himself for, he wanted his brother to start healing.
Dean tried to talk to him, tried to understand what was going on inside that head, but as usual Sam was dismissive of his questions. They’d even gotten into shouting matches, and had been damn close to throwing punches.
He tried to keep his anger in check. But every time Sam looked at him with that empty gaze and with hollow words said “I’m fine”, it pissed him off to no end. He’d been able to save his brother from almost every demon and ghoul out there for the past twenty-three years, but he had no clue how to save him from himself.
His eating habits were also getting on Dean’s last nerve.
The past week they had been better, Sam had at least made an attempt to eat when they stopped. But every night, Dean heard the meals coming back for a visit after Sam woke up from his latest nightmare.
Sam didn’t share anything about the nightmares. He just convinced Dean that they weren’t visions, and that no one needed saving.
Dean wished that was true, but he knew with every fiber of his being that if he didn’t save Sam, he was going to lose him.
~
He sat perched on the ledge, his toes curling over the stone. He listened to the sounds below him, reveling in the power that now coursed through his body.
He didn’t understand gargoyles. Their fierce need to protect those around them, those that shunned them, those that banished them.
It is our duty, came the calm reply from within.
He hadn’t been able to quiet the damn thing. During a normal possession, he’d always been able to quiet the panicked voices of those trapped inside their own bodies. This wasn’t a normal possession. There were many different myths about gargoyles. One he had been surprised to learn about was that they didn’t turn to stone in the sunlight. Or at least this one didn’t.
I am not your garden variety gurgulio.
“So what makes you so eager to rush to save a dying woman? A woman you’ve never met? A woman who would have let you die without a second thought?”
It is not my nature to discriminate as humans do. As demons do. I only do what I can.
“Silly gargoyle, you fight for what you do not understand. Those you fight to protect would destroy you without a second thought.”
Is that what makes you so eager to kill? Why is it demons are so hell bent on destruction?
“Because it is fun. This next kill is personal.”
Oh yes, the hunter. You do not yet fully understand what you are up against.
“It is he who doesn’t understand. He killed my family. I’m going to kill him. It is as simple as that.” The demon sighed. He was growing weary of the conversation with the guardian. He snapped his wings open, tensed the powerful muscles in his back, and pushed off from the ledge.
He had a job to do. One he was going to take his time with. One he was going to enjoy.
~
Sam listened to his brother belt out the lyrics to ‘Back in Black’ by AC/DC. His horrible attempt at impersonating Brian Johnson echoed painfully off the tiled walls and poured out of the bathroom.
Sam couldn’t help but smile. Things had been going uneventful, which was a surprise.
They had decided to take a small break, though neither brother had spoken it out loud. They just hadn’t gone looking for trouble.
The singing continued unmercifully, making Sam wince. He smiled again. He had been feeling pretty crappy the past month, but slowly he seemed to be coming out of the funk. He blamed that on Dean.
Dean had been so patient with him, giving in to one or two emotionally charged moments even. Dean had asked nothing of him, expected nothing of him, and had given him space when he’d needed it. Things were finally starting to return to normal. He was feeling better, and he knew he’d be a functioning member of the team again.
The voice from the bathroom was getting louder, now hollering the lyrics to ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ by Lynard Skynard. Everything suddenly seemed magnified, every sight and sound assaulting Sam’s senses all at once. A low throbbing pain started at the base of his skull, spreading like a web through his mind to his eyes.
The pain intensified, and soon white hot sparks where shooting through his head, making him gasp for breath. The pain radiated through his chest, tightening his airway. He struggled to draw breath now, struggling to see through the spots that now clouded his vision.
It hit him then, driving him off of the bed to his knees.
*Flash*
He was in a park. Dark shadows danced as the wind blew through the trees. A scream pierced the calm, and Sam spun to find the source.
A man stood holding an unconscious girl in his arms. Sam squinted and moved closer. The girl was not unconscious; her lifeless eyes stared into whatever awaited her on the other side.
The man was speaking to himself. Sam peered into the shadow. No, there was something there. Something large. Sam fought to see what it was, but he could not.
The demon released it’s host, letting him slump to the ground, the girl still in his arms. Sam watched, unable to move, as a cloud darker than any shadow present shot towards the figure in the shadows.
For a brief second, just long enough, the shadows lit, allowing Sam a glimpse at the creature that the demon now possessed.
*Flash*
“Sam? Damnit, Sam, what’s going on?” Dean was there, like always.
“Dean, we have to go!” Sam said, jumping up and running to the windows. He jerked the curtains aside, almost pulling them from the weak bar that held them up. It was already dark.
“Where? Sam, what was that?” Dean balled his hands in anger as he watched Sam dart around the room. “Sam, calm down for a minute and tell me what the hell is going on.”
“No time!” Sam yelled as he jerked the door open and dashed out into the night.
“Damnit Sam!” Dean replied as he shrugged into a shirt. At least he’d already had his jeans on when he’d stepped from the bathroom. He wondered how many more times he was going to be able to find his brother like that. On the floor, in pain, clawing at his head.
He grabbed his leather coat and joined his brother who was already waiting in the Impala.
~
Sam stared down at the body. How could they have been too late? By the time they had found the park, it had taken them another half hour just to find the secluded area where it had all happened.
The man who had been possessed was no where to be found. The body of the girl remained, her eyes still pleading for help.
Dean snapped his phone closed after he’d placed a call to 911. “Sam, we have to go before the cops show up.”
Sam nodded numbly. How could he have been too late.
Dean frowned, watching his brother closely as they made their way back to the car. He watched as all of the progress they’d made in the past week slipped away. He silently cursed his brother’s visions.
“We’ve got a problem.”
“What?” Dean asked, not wanting to push Sam.
“I saw…I mean…I think I saw…well…” Sam struggled with the words. Dean continued to patiently watch Sam, only taking his eyes off so he could unlock the doors.
Sam sighed. “I think I saw a demon possess a…a gargoyle.”
The keys made a soft jingle as they hit the pavement, and Dean’s jaw silently fell open.

whatyousee - December 9, 2006 12:15 AM (GMT)
omg oki so i had read your other stories earlier but only just realized that there was a sequel to greener so here i am catching up and OMG it's good. your other stories made me cry and get angry and happy and all that (because i'm a freak who gets into this stuff alot) and this one i can tell is going to do the same which means that i love it....anyways i hope to get another update soon but my main concern in this story is.....IS SAM GOING TO B OKAY!? like mentally and physically...and poor dean. i mean the feeling of dread in knowing that his brother is slipping away when so much of sam is already gone in the first place must be so hard to deal with for him...i also wonder how many more times dean will be able to do that...find his brother in pain...bu more importantly how much longer will he be able to look at sam knowing everything that's happened?
anyways PLEASE UPDATE AGAIN SOON I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT PART
Supernaturalxx - December 9, 2006 01:55 AM (GMT)

~~~~~~
“Are you sure?”
“Dean, I know what I saw.”
Dean looked around the empty diner, his eyes then settling on Sam, who was staring at his own coffee.
“Ok Sam, it’s just, gargoyles aren’t known to up and walking around.”
“You’re kidding, right?”
Dean’s eyes widened slightly. “Oh great well of knowledge, by all means then, share.”
Sam’s eyes lowered into a glare. “With all that we see, everything we’ve ever dealt with, you’re choosing now to be skeptical?”
Dean sighed in frustration. He was trying to keep his anger in check. Sam had been through a lot, he didn’t need to be harped on.
“Ok, so, what exactly did you see?”
“I saw a demon kill a girl, then the gargoyle appeared, then the demon took the gargoyle.”
“Well that’s just peachy. So all we have to do is do a little research on gargoyles, then take it out before it can cause any real damage.”
Sam.
Sam’s eyes lifted, dashing around the small diner. “Did you hear that?”
“What?”
Sam.
He shook his head. That’s all he needed, to be hearing voices.
He’s coming for you. Run!
The voice was rough, deep, but held a gentle tone.
“Sam, what is it?” Dean asked, also looking around the diner but seeing nothing.
“I thought I heard…nevermind,” he answered.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Well you haven’t exactly been yourself, and now you’re hearing things.”
“Dean, let it go.”
“Just let me know if we need to take a trip back to Roosevelt.”
Sam groaned, downing the rest of his stale coffee.
~
“You shouldn’t have done that gargoyle.”
I did nothing.
“You contacted that Winchester.”
Oh, that.
“Well, it’s no matter. He won’t be prepared for us no matter how much you try.”
You really shouldn’t go after this one.
“Yeah? And what the hell do you know?”
He is powerful. He is protected.
“Oh yes, the brother. He won’t be a problem. He’ll be dealt with first.”
For being such a powerful demon, you do not have much common sense.
“Shut up gargoyle.”
Then again, maybe the only reason you lasted as long as you did is because you had family.
“I’m warning you gargoyle!!”
Now, unless I am mistaken, when it came down to it, you turned and ran. You ran.
The demon roared, his own voice mingling with that of the gargoyle’s. Red hot anger ran from the pit of his stomach, acid shooting up to his lungs, sending burning hot pain even up through his head. The gargoyle within cried out as he was attacked. The attack was swift, leaving the gargoyle weak within himself. He moaned as he faded, no longer aware.
The demon smiled as his host was silenced. He knew it was still alive, and it would be back soon. All he needed was a few moments of silence to think. He had acquired the power he’d sought.
The gargoyle’s warning had him worried. He knew the brothers were powerful.
The youngest had killed his family.
He was going to need something, even more powerful than the gargoyle.
He smiled again, his fears laid to rest. He knew just what he needed to do.
~
“Well gargoyles can be tricky creatures,” the elderly man said as he laid a stack of books in front of the hunters. He’d been more than eager to help them out with their term papers, insisting they get to the college right away.
Dean smiled, “Yeah, darn those tricky buggers.”
Sam shot a look his way, and Dean just shrugged.
Oblivious to the exchange, the professor continued to educate. “They’re known as the protectors of man. It was believed that they slept during the day, turning to stone. At night, they came alive, ridding the world of evil. Some believe they’ve evolved since the old times, when they were prominently found on castles. Ah, here it is.” He picked up a book from the bottom of the pile, causing the rest to topple over. He handed the book to Dean. “Will that help?”
The Life and Times of the Modern Gargoyle
Dean’s eyebrow raised as he read the cover. “Are you serious?”
“Well, the man who wrote that was known as a bit of a nut.”
“Professor James Norman?” Dean read the author’s name aloud.
“You would call yourself a nut?” Sam said, laughing.
“You wouldn’t?”
The boys fell silent.
“Alright, well, I’ll let you all get to your research. Let me know if you need someone to proof read your papers, eh?”
“Sure will!” Dean exclaimed, giving two thumbs up.
“That was rude,” Sam said disapprovingly as the professor left the area.
“What? The guy was a whack job apparently. Even called himself one.”
“Alright, let’s just start looking.”
~
Three hours later, they had a collection of notes, splitting headaches, and the professor’s phone number.
“I think he even winked at you,” Dean smirked.
“You’re the one who offered to bring your paper by,” Sam said as he climbed into the Impala.
“I promised I’d bring you. His eyes sure lit up when I said that!” Dean shot back.
“Can we just go back to the room?”
“Sure can sweetie pie!” Dean mimicked.
Sam groaned, rubbing his eyes. The strain he’d been feeling was beginning to build. As Dean rambled on, his voice slowly faded into the background. The trees that had been rushing by began to flicker, jerking wildly as they faded.
*Flash*
“You are going to pay for what you’ve done!”
Sam gasped at the sheer size of the beast in front of him. It was the gargoyle.
“You’re going to have to be more specific,” he fired. “I’ve done a lot.”
“You killed my family you cocky little son of a bitch!”
“Once again, I’ve killed a lot of nasty things.”
“Constance ring a bell?”
Sam’s eyes widened. This had to be the one that got away, the one he’d seen retreating into the edges of darkness after he’d killed the Ancients.
“I thought that might jog your memory!”
“Let’s see what you’ve got,” he taunted, not backing down even when the possessed gargoyle began to advance on him. What was he doing? Why was he trying to take the thing on? He let his vision continue, needed to know what was happening.
The gargoyle stopped moving towards him, an malicious grin splitting his face. “Maybe you don’t want to live with what has happened, hm? Maybe you are just begging for death.”
"No, I sleep just fine knowing more of your kind is dead."
"Silly human, that's not what I speak of!"
“Sam!” Dean yelled from behind him. He turned to find the gargoyle standing behind his brother, who was tied to a chair.
“No!” he screamed, but it was too late. The demon had snapped Dean’s head to the side, breaking his neck.
*Flash*
“No!” Sam screamed, coming out of the vision. The sound of a small explosion filled the car, followed by a startled cry from Dean.
Sam opened his eyes. The Impala sat on the side of the road, rumbling as it idled, cars whipping past them. Dean’s hand rested on his shoulder, but his gaze was fixed forward. Sam followed his gaze and gasped.
The windshield was gone. Small chunks of glass littered the hood, glittering like diamonds.
“What the f-“ Dean said as he climbed from the car. He couldn’t even deal with the fact that Sam had just done something to take out his windshield. One thing at a time, he thought. The windshield first.
Sam felt drained, exhausted. He tried to move his arm to open the door, but it refused to obey his command. Darkness lined the edges of his vision, calling him to it. With a small sigh, he closed his eyes, his weary body relaxing. Why was he so tired? With no control, he spiraled into unconsciousness.
“Sam? What the hell man! Why the car?!” Dean demanded, looking through the now empty space to his brother. “Sam?”
That was great Kris, the length of the chapter doesn't matter, just the quality and that was awesome! The demon possessing the gargoyle, the gargoyle telepathically (is that a word?!) contacting Sam, Sam having a vision and managing to smash the windscreen, brilliant! Could imagine the look on Deans face when his beloved cars windscreen shattered! :lol:
Glad you found time to update, no pressure, just more please when you are able to! :)
