I think this year, it truly is March Madness. The number one seeds this year are strong, but probably not as strong as they've been in past years. Plus, the way the brackets have been split up leads to a lot more uncertainty. Arguably, the most dangerous #2 seed this year (Ohio State) is playing in the same bracket as the #1 overall seed (Kansas). Not to mention some very good mid-level seeds to go along with it (Michigan State, Maryland, Georgetown). Syracuse and Duke, on the other hand, were the two lowest rated #1 seeds but ended up with the two easiest brackets. We could have some great teams taken out early in the tourney, while some teams sneak into the Final Four without being tested. It's anybody's guess.

I personally have no idea what's going to happen this year. I feel like I have a good sense of all the teams, but I still don't know what's going to happen. It'll be fun. It'll be entertaining. I'd put my money on an underdog making a long run if anything but I'm not much of a betting man. In the end, I'm going to expect the unexpected.

as you said expect the unexpected....Georgetown getting beat....Florida going into 2 O/T before losing.....more O/T games so far than any other tournament and they have not got to the half way point on Friday......the first #1 seed to go down will be Syracuse.....injuries and poor play that cost them the Big East title....watch for W Va....

Weekend Number One Update: It was pretty crazy.

We had a #14, #13, #12, two #11s, and three #10s all win on the first day. Not only that, but now we have three double digits seeds in the Sweet Sixteen (Washington, Saint Mary's, and Cornell) going into next weekend. AND Northern Iowa beat Kansas, who was the number one overall seed. Once again, pretty crazy.

I'd have to say the most surprising upsets were Ohio's win over Georgetown as a #14 seed and obviously Northern Iowa's upset over Kansas. That's going to make the Midwest bracket interesting as three out of the top four seeds are out (No. 4 Maryland lost to No. 5 Michigan State). If we get another year like 2006 where George Mason makes the Final Four, I'm all for it.

It just goes to show that rankings go out the window when it comes time for the tournament. I've done seeding for kids basketball doing over 120 teams in an age group. It's a nightmare plus coaches are never happy....
