A Wisconsin man turned himself in for shooting a wolf in southern Douglas County. Trisha Marczak has more.
DNR Wolf Biologist Adrian Wydeven says the man admitted to killing the animal three days into the hunting season. “The person who shot claimed he was shooting at, or thought he was shooting at a deer. Apparently he saw a deer running through the woods and another animal following behind it which he thought initially was another deer and he shot at the second one and that ended up being a wolf”. He will receive a fine around $300. Investigations are ongoing into the other eight wolf shootings, which is about twice as many wolves usually killed during a hunting season. Depending on witness testimony, Wydeven says it is unlikely that anyone will be charged with the intentional killing of a protected animal. “That’s difficult to demonstrate and most often when we do get cases like this they are most often prosecuted as unintentional killings or shooting of an endangered species”. Wydeven says this is an important issue for many in the conservation community. “It is a concern to people who are interested and concerned about the fate of wolves that this high illegal kill occurred”. A $4,000 reward is being offered to anyone who has any information valuable to the investigation.
