MARQUETTE, Mich. Michigan's population of gray wolves is still rising _ but apparently a bit slower than before.
Wolf coordinator Brian Roell (ROE-ell) of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the latest survey turned up 434 wolves in the Upper Peninsula.
That's up from 405 counted in 2005 _ an increase of 29. The previous year, the population rose by 45 wolves.
Roell also says the D-N-R has killed six wolves in the western U-P since receiving a permit from the federal government in May. The permit allows the state to kill wolves that are attacking livestock.
Wolves have been on the endangered species list for many years. The U-S Interior Department wants to remove them from the list because they're recovering so well.
