WHAT THE HELL? >:( |

Okay, this scared me to the point where I feel the need to post this here where everyone can see it. I don't know how but I think (not entirely sure) that something on Shining Nova attacked my computer just now.
You know those pop-ups you get tat say "OMFG you need to check for Viruses! USE OUR sh*t TO DO IT FOR FREE RITE NAO!"
Well, I was posting something and I got redirected to one of those pages when I submitted my post. Now it showed me a window of my "My Computer" section of my computer and showed what looked like a Virus scan and as the bar filled up it told me that Viruses were found in the "My Documents" Folder and stuff like that.
Now what has me suspicious is the fact that it was showing this to me from an INTERNET EXPLORER WINDOW and the lighting and shading were WAAY off from what it would be if I had actually been looking in the "My Computer" folder. AND on top of that I had my Flash Drive in my computer yet during this supposed scan my Flash Drive slot was conveniently missing fromt the list of files shown in the "My Computer" window which as we all know is where the Flash Drive option ALWAYS appears. Furthermore when I closed the window I got a pop-up window telling me that my computer was infected and to press "OK" to download the software and the "OK" button was the only button to choose from. At this point I immediately performed a Hard Shut Down of my computer and am currently conducting a manual Full Virus Scan on my computer to see if it yields the same results or just in case that pop-up put something onto my comp before I could shut down.
I believe it was a site ad that automatically activated the pop-up, but why such an ad would be allowed to show up on Invisionfree seems a bit farfetched. Bottom line, I don't know if the site itself is a host of some kind of self-applying virus or if it was an ad, I'm just telling you that I posted something and got the last thing I was expecting to see...
If anyone else has had or begins having this problem ON THIS SITE, please post the details of your experience and/or any helpful information considering it's prevention or origins.
EDIT: My Virus scan is over, I've no recorded infections on my laptop
Thank you

Shining Nova Update |

Thanks to some stuff I found, I added a multi-purpose sidebar to the site. Hopefully, this won't interfere with anything already on the site or your load times. If a load time does exist, try refreshing the page several times. I've noticed Browsers seem to have an easier time loading pages if they're used to loading the same thing over and over. But that could just be my computer (which has already adapted to load at normal speed now).
Screen stretching hopefully won't be a problem. For those with higher screen resolutions, this shouldn't be a problem at all. For those like me with lower resolutions, there might be some areas where you can scroll left and right but it shouldn't be too much of a problem since most of the cut-off content is just non-essential table boarders and stuff.
All the skins seem to work fine except for some sections on some skins where text blends in with the background. Shouldn't be a problem with the forums, but the sidebar might have this issue. I haven't tested all the skins for defects yet.
Also added URL's to the sidebar including Youtube, Photobucket, Fiesta, Planet Renders, Seribii.net, ect.
I hope you enjoy this new addition to the site; I know I have so far |

Okay, we still have alot of skins without banners. I'd appreciate any submissions.
Also, the Pokemon Project skin stopped working, so I replaced it with Huna Lulu and added White Rabbit as well. |

West Academy Reconstruction |

A former admin of West Academy has nearly destroyed the site. (Backstreet Boy, for those of you who haven't read the "F*ck this" topic and put 2+2 together)
So far, this is what damage I've found done.
-deleted 54 forums -deleted 8 member accounts (specific names unknown) -deleted 3 forum categories -purged remaining forums -turned the board offline -disabled new member registrations
So far for reconstruction, 1 public forum has been opened, the board has been switched back online, a topic has been opened to inform guests and members of these occurances, and the "must log-in to view board" feature has been disabled so that guests who's accounts were deleted can view the topic and know what's been going on.
That's all the news I've got for now. |

I've been wishing you would get AIM ever since we met at MKS, but you've kept telling me it doesn't work on your computer... good thing we still have Meebo! You just have to make a free account there, and then you can talk to all of us on AIM/MSN. Setting up brawls and stuff will be much easier this way. |

Skin Banners |
| Posted by Kurayamiblack - 11-7-08 04:21 - 1 comments |

Info
3 votes said "If I want to", 1 Vote "Yes", and 2 Votes "No".
Since I do want to, those 3 votes count as a Yes putting it 4-2, so individual skins are now gonna have their own banners! I fixed the clickable banner problem, but for some people, it might say "Photobucket image is deleted or removed". Just load up a new page and it should go away.
Now I just need some good GFXers to make some banners! I do have a few rules for banners though.
1) Size must be exactly 728 x 207 pixels
2) "Shining Nova" must be written on it as well as the name of the skin the banner is for. Preferable "Shining Nova" being noticable and the skin name being written in small but readable letters in one of the corners.
3) All renders must be appropriate (obviously).
That's all. Other than that, you can get as creative as you want. If you would like to submit a Banner, please post it This Thread and request it to be used. I'm going to put up some temporary banners until some submissions come in.
New Skins
I replaced some of the old, not-so-great skins with newer, better ones. Only 4 though. Check them out!

New Shoutbox |
| Posted by Kurayamiblack - 10-26-08 08:33 - 5 comments |

Okay, we have a Shoutbox now, but it may not be like what you expect...
Simple Description
This Shoutbox works more like the FETO (Fire Emblem Tactics Online) Shoutboxes. You have to click the "refresh" button to see any new posts unless you've just loaded up a new page. The Shoutbox will be seen on all pages, so if you enter a topic, the Shoutbox will still be at the bottom of the page. And since you loaded that page (the topic you just entered), the Shoutbox will automatically refresh as the page loads. So every time you enter a forum or topic, the Shoutbox will refresh itself.
The shoutbox is tied directly into Shining Nova, so as long as you're logged in at Shining Nova, the account you use in the Shoutbox IS the same account you're logged in as, so unless you know someone elses password, nobody can impersonate you (unlike the chatroom). But also unlike the chatroom, everything you say in the shoutbox is public and anything you post there, will remain there... forever... until deleted. So you can't hide anything you post in there without editing it, unlike the chatromm where anything you say is erased as soon as you leave the chatroom.
So basically, the chatroom is for private instant messaging, while the Shoutbox is for public chatting. Remember, the shoutbox can be seen on any page so if you're trying to get someone's attention, they should be able to see anything you put in the shoutbox no matter where they are, as long as they're looking at it.
And BTW, for those who didn't notice, all the posts are organized so that the latest posts appear on top.
Enjoy!
Detailed Information (for those who want to know how it works)
The Shoutbox is actually a topic in a hidden forum which can be accessed normally. When you post in the Shoutbox, you're posting in that topic. The shoutbox takes all posts made in that topic, removes the avatars, sigs, etc. and duplicates the post itself and places it within the Shoutbox at the bottom of each page. This is why it's linked to your accounts, it's just a regular, but more convenient topic crammed into a box that can be viewed on any page of the site (including the Shoutbox topic itself for those of you curious) and has auto refresh.
For those who think "aww, that's kinda lame", it's not all that bad.
-The shoutbox can be refreshed independently from the page you're on meaning you can refresh the Shoutbox without refreshing the entire page of the site.
-It's completely public, so this provides a way for guests to communicate with us before joining if they like. For example if you have a friend who doesn't want to join but would like to have a word with a moderator, the Shoutbox would allow the two to chat without making an account they'll never use after the conversation anyway.
-If you don't like the Shoutbox or would rather not see it all the time, you can collapse it by pressing the litttle button in the upper right corner of the Shoutbox.
-Because of the way it's set-up, it's compatible with all of Shining Nova's emoticons and post-related scripts.
-Since these are in fact posts, the sites post count (and your personal post count) does increase from Shoutbox posts so my personal concerns about "taking away activity from the forums" is less likely to happen.
In my opinion, this shoutbox is a very nice medium for what most people expect, and what I want from a Shining Nova. Instead of giving the members 100% control and leaving me to trust the It should be enough to satisfy your base needs and mine instead of leaving me to worry about misuse every time something is posted, so this should work out nicely.
Extra Information:
Every time the topic goes to a new page, so will the Shoutbox, so eventually you'll see the Shoutbox will have multiple pages on it. If you're in the middle of a conversation and you think you missed a post, you can always browse previous pages at any time.
Admins Personal Requests
There are a few guidelines I'd like to lay down and I hope you follow them.
1) All Shining Nova rules apply to the Shoutbox
2) I'd appreciate it if you didn't post any images or videos in the Shoutbox because the shoutbox's size doesn't change, so the whole image might not be visible, and it will just force people to have to scroll over them. You may post links to the pics and/or videos however, since those don't take up much space.
3) I'd appreciate it if you showed each other respect and courtesy in the Shoutbox. Remember, it's public. We don't need our guests to view the site for the first time and find someone arguing at the bottom of the page
I hope you enjoy the Shoutbox! |
