Bruce hummed to himself as Joe Swaggerman, the big bay clysedale, picked his way across the marshy grounds. As they drew nearer to the desired campsite, he reined in the gelding, glancing to the back of the cart where four fine horses followed intently. Hopping out of the cart, Bruce quickly untacked Joe, tethering him on a long rope to a large tree. Smiling peacefully all the while, he swiftly tied a thick rope from his cart between one of the old wooden wwheels and another thick willow. He led the tired horses around behind the rope, tethering them each to it by their leads. The lively colt and filly, muscular stallion, and gorgeous mare in foal gratefully munched on the flakes of hay he had bought them at his last campsite.
After carefully posting his sign, which read 'HORSES FOR SALE' in bold letters, Bruce tended to himself. Hoppoing back into the cart, he grabbed his sleepingbag, unrolling it in the bed of his traveling device. He put a long wooden rod into its proper spot- a small hole in the cart's sturdy floor- so it pointed to the sky. He quickly hung tarps off the rod, tyeing them to the cart's railings. When his work was finished, the old gypsy carefully unfolded his wooden chair, and sat contentedly outside the cart to await a visitor. Bruce woke in his chair, the morning sunshine opening up his eyes. Glancing about, he remembered the night before. Apparently, he had stayed the night. "Ahh, well," he murmured, quickly taking down the tarp and rod, rolling up his sleeping bag. He fed the five horses, who were rested and ready to go. Quickly drinking from a fresh cocunut, he cleaned out the edges and ate the meat of the fruit. Weathered old hands moving swiftly with experience, he quickly tied the horses in a ling behind the cart. He silently hitched Joe Swaggerman, and hopped into the cart |
