He was holding her in his arms. She was so warm and alive. He was content to just hold her. Because biting had been made off limits, the temptation to do so was not nearly as great. He could hold her, and feel love for her, and ignore his desire for her blood simply because it was no longer allowed.

So, instead, he brushed his lips across the base of her ear. Her flesh was so warm. So soothing. Gregory shifted slightly, inching further into the corner in which they sat, and pulled a book off the shelf behind them that had been sticking him in the back. He glanced at the cover, and laughed quietly in Mika's ear.

He tossed it gently to the floor in front of them, and the cover read "History of Russian Warfare".

"I attract irony," he said with a grin.

"You misuse that word," Mika said, a slight smile moving on her face. "You attract coincidence. It would only be irony if it was 'How to Avoid Russian Spys'".

She curled up slightly, and turned towards herself. She needed to tell Gregory that she have been thinking, that she wasn't sure how he would react. This wasn't right for her to do, to keep on toying with him as she waits. This was going to end badly, he wouldn't take it. She should have done this months ago, when it was still possible for him to let go. But that was then and now is now.

"Gregory- I need- I mean. Gregory, I think that this isn't right."

Gregory was silent for a moment, hoping that this wasn't going to be what it sounded like it was going to be. He contemplated the other possibilities for a moment, before carefully opening his mouth.

"What isn't right?"

His tone was cautious, and he shifted slightly to look at her face.

"I mean, I just can't keep on taking from you. Our relationship is so one-sided that it's- I mean, I can't give to you what I took. I don't think that it's even. In fact, I know that it isn't. I mean- You're doing everything for me, and I can do nothing. I can't live like that. I need to be my own person."

Mika bit her lip. She wasn't sure how Gregory would respond. He wouldn't like this. He would blame himself- No. This had to stop, and this was the only way.

Again, he was silent. Thinking.

"I... Are you..." He closed his mouth again. His mind kept pushing away from what he knew she meant. They couldn't be toge- She was brea- She was...

"Are... are you sending me away? Mika?"

Mika scowled. He was being annoying about this, wasn't he. All this, all their fights.

"Gregory, I am not sending you away. Sending you away only involves me. That's what I'm talking about. We're not two complements. I mean- Gregory! I don't want you to hurt. God knows it, I don't want you to hurt. But we can't continue on like this. With me as a pseudo-master, though the tables are turned. I mean. God."

Mika, by now, had gone from anger to grief. Tears were welling up in her eyes, glossing them and making them seem as though jewels. Drops started to escape, leaving streams on her face.

"Gr- Gregory. Please."

Gregory couldn't not put his arms around her. He didn't like seeing her in pain. And he knew- he knew that they were... not good together.

They had love, but they were bad for each other. They hurt each other. They were selfish.

Gregory was selfish. He wanted to stay with her. He didn't care how much it hurt, because it would be more painful without her.

He thought.

He had been left behind before, but that had been his choice. And now he would have chosen to stay with her, and she was-

Gregory hugged her. "I'm sorry," were the only words he could say.

"Don't be sorry." Miak pushed him away. "Don't be god-damned sorry. What the hell of a response is that. You're sorry. You're sorry. I mean."

Mika curled inside of her. She doesn't want to listen to apologize. She doesn't want an apology. But, then again, what does she want? Pain is what she has. Not love. Not joy. Pain.

Mika sobbed. Mika sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Then, suddenly, her tears dried up. She shouldn't cry. This was a decision she had made. She need strength. Utter, complete strength.

"Gregory. I'm sorry. I can't."

What was he supposed to do? Centuries spent walking this earth. Centuries wasted. He didn't know how to speak to someone in a meaningful way. His ability to comfort... it had left with his humanity.

This could never have worked.

And he was hurting her.

"Gregory. I'm sorry. I can't."

He looked at her, so unsure of what to do. Anything he had ever done had been a step toward hurting her. His own thoughts and ideas were no good. What was he supposed to do?

Cautiously, he reached out to touch her. Just a hand on her shoulder, but he was so unsure. What did she want?

"Gregory. I'm going to go sleep. I'm going to sleep. We will will talk tomorrow. I mean, think about it. Let us wait and emotions cool. I'm going to go to sleep now."

Mika stood up, straightened her hair and garments, brushing off dust and grabbing a book, and left. The door scraped behind her in an oddly final tone, as though it was saying 'don't follow, don't follow, don't follow, don't look, stop looking now'.

A few feet from the door, a few yard of carpeting and Mika felt that twitch. And odd twitch, one she forgot. Next, she was on the ground, writhing. As usual, she made some vocalizations, a strangled scream. Her eyes were rolling, her limbs askew. Control. Control. None. No control at all.

Gregory's ears took in the hallow sound of the door closing behind her. It hurt, somehow. The sound hurt, and he looked down. He stared at the floor, eyes wide. She did not want him. He was not to follow her.

This was one order that was made clear, for once, and without words. Stay. Good bo-

But he could hear something. He heard her fall. All of his muscled tensed. She didn't want him to go after her. He heard her strained voice. Calling out. He knew what was happening. She didn't want him there.

She didn't want him!

For a terrifyingly long minute, Gregory could not move. She did not want him. did not want him. did not want him. Stay here. Good little vampire. Stay and don't follow me. Don't follo-

"Mika!" her name tore itself from his throat, and his surroundings became a blur. He was running. Running to her. To help her. His mind working overtime to make up the time he had lost. "Mika-" Gregory dropped to his knees, sliding, skidding across the carpet and grabbing at her limbs. Pulling her to him. To protect her from herself.

By now, her limbs gave up their struggles. She still had no control, as all her energy were drained with the protests. The world swam before her.

"I'm tir-" Mika groaned. A sticky wetness clung at her head. Nausea stung her stomach. A movement, a- Mika gave a groan and opened her mouth in bare attempts to stop the nausea. Her eyes hurt. Exhaustion pressed on towards her. She shut her eyes with a moan, breathing shallowly rather than deeply.

"Gre- Gregory."

Ugh. She felt like crap. Complete crap, undeniably crap. She tried to open her eyes, but they didn't want to budge. Mika stopped trying. She tried to speak again, but her jaw was heavy. Her tongue was nailed to her mouth. A brief moan escaped. The wet patch on the crown of her head grew, streams of water dripping down her neck.

"Mika... Mika?"

The smell of blood was thick in Gregory's nose, and he was almost sickened by his desire for it. He could feel her heartbeat. It pounded inside his skull. It grew louder the closer she came to d-

"Mika, please. No. No!" Her eyes were closed. Could she even feel him holding her. She couldn't die. She couldn't! He wouldn't let her!

Gregory's fangs were almost in her flesh. Almost, but... He had spent so much time hurting her with his good intentions and his thoughtlessness. This wasn't what she wanted. Blood streaked down his cheeks, and he held her close.

"Mika," his voice crooned uselessly. There was blood everywhere. The smell of it... The smell of it meant her death. He lowered himself to her flesh once more, his lips grazing her cheek. "I love you, Mika," he said.

He hadn't wanted her to send him away, and she had insisted that that wasn't what she was doing. The road always had to go two ways. Why did he understand that now that she was dying in his arms.

She heard him speaking, in an odd, far-off tone. It was as though he was in another room or talking to her while her attention was focused on something else. Gregory's voice was clear to her, and she smiled- or, at least, twitched the corners of her mouth up- at Gregory's words. But, she drifted further into herself.

There were showers of stars in front of her. Golden stars, clustering over eyes. For once, she felt warm enough. Uncomfortably warm, compared to the cold she felt in her life. Her body was no longer attached. She was floating in the stars, smiling at them and telling them her stories. One sat on her shoulder, the smallest star, the infant. It seemed to be pleading for a word.

"Love."

"Mika, Mika, Mika, Mika..." her name repeated itself on his lips as he clutched her cold body. He could feel himself rocking back and forth, ignoring the smell of blood and his desire for it. Gregory was afraid. What would he do without her? In the short time that he was with her, he had become dependent on her.

He loved her.

He would do anything for her. To protect her. To keep her from harm! What good was he if he couldn't do that?!

Gregory was faintly aware of his voice, crying out in agony as his lover slipped away. What good was he if he couldn't save her? What good was he if she died?
