| December 1951. The SS Flying Enterprise, a privately-owned American cargo freighter leaves Hamburg, Germany bound for New York. In the North Atlantic, the ship encounters some of the worst storms of the century. The ship cracks and takes a permanent 60º list. All 51 persons aboard the ship are evacuated except for one, the Danish captain, Kurt Carlsen. As the world watches, Captain Carlsen stays aboard the foundering ship for 14 stormy days trying to save her, but to no avail. The Flying Enterprise sinks. Exactly how did the ship go down? What caused her to crack and list: was it just the storm or was there a problem with the loading of her cargo? What compelled the captain to stay aboard the doomed ship for two weeks? Hosts John Chatterton and Richie Kohler dive the English Channel to find out. |
