I don't want to burst your bubbles, but don't be fooled by all the screenshots, videos and a listful of interesting features. The game itself is developed by a chinese company, yes a 'Chinese' company, and to be precise, a Chinese company trying very hard to make a mark in an industry dominated by Korean imports. The problem with a Chinese company behind a MMOPRG is that they lack experience. Not only are they new to the MMORPG industry, they are also reactionary, instead of innovative. Put it cynically, they've thrown all the the existing MMORPG elements into a blender and came out with a money-grabbing game to foll all you kids out there. Instead of trying to be innovative,the look of Perfect World is as cliched as it gets. A monstrous abnormality to be precise, a mixture of Korean plasticity, Western high fantasy and Chinese kitch mythology. The aesthetics are comparable to Chinese made Walmart toys. It just 'looks' wrong. It may be visually colourful, but all the colours are in the wrong place. In the end what you get is a mix bag of try hard graphics that reminds you of super nintendo graphics on acid. Bright surface colours everywhere, zero texture, zero detail. The graphics are like 20c lollypops to fool 5 year old kids. Then again, you can't blame Chinese companies for making such appalling efforts in the graphic department. They don't build graphic engines or 3D models, they rip them off existing games. Graphic aside, the gameplay is awful. The movement resembles a person with a left leg longer than a right leg, no smooth motion, no realistic motion, the avatar feels like a spirte floating in some multi-coloured polygon world. All the animations look unprofessional, unpolished, poorly-implemented. The same can be said about the landscape. Instead giving players a 'damn this looks good' impression, ala Guild Wars, LoTR, your first reaction would be eww... everything is so fluro, so bright, so candy. If thats your style, then this game is for you, personally i prefer some texture, some depth, some detail, some aesthetic appeal. Chinese computer companies are never known for their stunning graphics and Perfect World is certainly a vindication of this. Not only is the graphics poor, the music is also awful. The title song has all the cheesiness and pop chart smug of a teenage boyband. The music do not match the music. It's like the developers put zero effort into matching BGM with content. Instead they threw together a random playlist of half-baked pop songs and patched it into the game directory. Like the graphics, the music sounds wrong. One thing however that makes this game unlike Korean games, is the fact that there is actually customization. You can adjust each feature of a character's body with a slider system (2nd Life), yet for some reason, the character models look, unprofessional, roughly made, and overall tacky. No matter how hard you try, your character never ends up looking aesthetically pleasing. Furthemore, the avatars look somewhat Chinese, yet no quite Chinese, its like plastic surgery gone wrong. Theres nothing thats right about the graphics of this game. Although in a sense this game aims to be sandbox-esque with trizillions of quest, a lot of features such as owning your own city, it does not escape from the traditional grind model. Instead of pretending to be something other than a grindfest, Perfect World misleads players into believing that the game worlds is "a world where you can do what ever you want, a 'perfect world'". What results is a game environment that pretends to be a sandbox but in reality is a grindfest, yes, its one hell of a grind. The general feeling of Perfect World compared to other more accomplished titles out there such DnD, LoTR, G.E. is that its tacky. Tacky is the perfect description, even the name sounds tacky. Perfect World, everything reminds me of puppy love, teen idol, pink-coloured bubblegum and school girls riding bicycles in Cosplay costumes. To draw an analogy, the standard of Perfect world is akin to a Chinese made car in comparison to Ferraris, BMWs and Mercedes. It's runs without much problem, handy, cheap but aesthetically retarded. If you're a gamer that overlooks beautiful design, pleasing aesthetics, polish, punch and charm, then this game may be for you. But if you're looking for something with a bit of sophistication and class, then Perfect World will only make you cringe with its tackiness.
