What bothers me about the current situation at AEI is that people who
need help will not get there care they need. If the Broder team is so interested in promoting themselves, pushing their books over Al's,financial gain, interpersonal battling, and stuff like that, they are not looking at the situation in terms of how can I best help the troubled Client/Patient. If medical doctors behaved that way, they would be stripped of their license (hopefully). I feel sorry for the unknowing, who seek out the institute for help, and don't realise how low on the totem pole their needs are to the jokers running the show now. It's a very bad situation. Albert was never this kind of man, and it's one of the things I've respected him most for. Picture an emotionally troubled young person seeking help at a place presided over by a jazz guitarist and a money-hungry meglomaniac. This is shameful.Harmful.Wasteful.Dispicible.Criminal. Danny, I agree wholeheartedly.
One of the things about Albert Ellis I've admired is the way he hasn't been grasping or greedy. He puts the needs of the public first. That's why he formed the Albert Ellis Institute, bought and paid for the building, turned the royalties from his books over to the Institute, gave free workshops, and provided low-cost training and treatment. Now that he's 92 years old he deserves some benefits from all his hard work. And they're not excessive, not matter what the AEI lawyer says. In 2002, a friend of mine was in a bad way emotionally and physically. She wrote "Ask Dr. Ellis," hoping to get some advice. She told him about her medical problems, marriage and financial problems and how angry she was at her husband A couple weeks later she got an e-mail message from him. He told her that her problems were too complex to be answered in the monthly column and he recommended she seek therapy. The message was long and detailed and he hit the nail on the head time after time, explaining how she enraged and depressed herself in various ways. We all know Albert Ellis can speak gruffly and roughly. There was not one gruff or rough word in that long letter. He spoke compassionately and expressed his concern for her well-being and the well-being of her children. He then offered to provide individual therapy for her at a very reasonable price. That's the kind of man Albert Ellis is. I'm sure there are still good therapists at AEI. But the prices are increasing. I've noticed that on the website over the last year or so. I suggested another friend seek therapy from AEI last year and she was quoted a price of $135 a session. She's a student, no insurance, no help from parents, paying her own way, in her mid-20s. $135 a session is still a good price, but for her it might as well have been a million dollars. AEI may no longer be accessible for low income people. The present bunch in charge also seems to want to get rid of anyone who disagrees with them. Therapists with gumption will probably be weeded out over the course of a couple years. I seriously doubt there's much harmony at AEI these days, despite what the first official statement said. |

Julia, i just loved your post, everything you wrote aobut Dr Ellis is so true. The center was known for providing the best care , affordable to anyone and everyone. What the agenda of Broder and company, is to turn the center in to a highly profitable and bussiness venture. Al understand that people in need of theraphy come from every corner the person could be a mulitimillaonaire or a student like your friend. Their "vision" of how the AEI should be run, is so far removed from Dr Ellis and everything that he believes in. I am truly worried aobuit the people in need if their evil plans should pass, but the good news is that I believe thatthis allcan be put to a stop with Al's supporters like ourself working together and raising money....
