I've been receiving questions from folks wanting to know what they can do to help Al and REBT. Here's a couple of suggestions ...

Take a look at the website of the Albert Ellis Foundation (not Institute) and it'll give you and idea of some of the work that is being done to promote REBT and to protect the human rights of Albert Ellis. If you click on the "REBT Library" you'll find an article about Al's strong preferences for his future.

Don't forget to take another look at the photos of Al's apartment. It's a shock to see what the conditions the board forced on Al when they refused to fix the leaking roof for over two years.

Some of the areas in which you could help Albert Ellis and promote REBT are as follows

1. "Reflections" Essays, telling in 300-700 words how REBT and/or Albert Ellis have had a personal impact on your life or work. For details:
http://albertellisfoundation.org/library/reflections.html

2. Send letters and emails to the members of the Board of Trustees protesting the treatment Al has received at their hands.

One of the things that we've seen in the past six months is that the Trustees have stopped making large public attacks against Dr. Ellis and his wife, Debbie Joffe.

They have, instead, resorted to a quiet email and snail mail campaign of making unsubstantiated allegations against or about Al and Debbie. They are relying on the power of gossip, hoping to knock off Al's supporters one at a time.

I'm sorry to report that in some cases it's worked. I've talked to people -- good people -- who have believed the smear campaign.

For example, Ray DiGiuseppe and Jeffrey Bernstein have both said, in writing, they the Institute WANTS to help Al by fixing up his apartment and paying his medical bills, but Al's wife keeps putting obstacles in the way. People have asked me what's holding Debbie up. The answer is, "nothing!"

In fact, the apartment has been prepared for repairs for two months and the bills were submitted many weeks ago. AEI has not acted. Debbie and some volunteers worked their asses off to meat AEI's demands and they did. They met the deadline set by AEI and then nothing happened, except AEI sent out messages blaming Debbie for their inaction.

One of the most important things we can do to protect Al's human rights and to promote REBT is to counter those unsubstantiated allegations with hard fact. It's time the AEI trustees and staff were called on their lack of integrity, their lies and their continued abuse of a 93-year-old man with mulitiple physical ailments.

We can only do that if we know what is being said. This is sometimes difficult because the allegations are often accompanied by name-calling, rating and labeling that is so unpleasant that the natural feeling of an honorable person is to not spread the gossip further.

But we really need people to let us know what is being said, who is saying it, and in what context.

So, as a start, you could write letters to the board and see what kind of response you get. Here's a list of email addresses of trustees and senior staff.

Dr. Michael Broder -- Drbroder@aol.com

Dr. Ann Vernon -- Ann.Vernon@uni.edu

Dr. James McMahon -- bjpsymac@msn.com

Mr. John Lenton -- johnlenton@iname.com

Mr. Jeff Bernstein -- jbernstein@trufoods.com

Mrs. Florence Chasin -- FERJAC@webtv.net

Dr. Ray DiGiuseppe -- digiuser@stjohns.edu

Mr. Bob O'Connell -- boconnell@albertellis.org

In recent months, folks have let up on writing the board and staff to let them know that Al and Debbie have our continued support. It's important that we remain noisy in our support; otherwise those people who have worked against 93-year old Albert Ellis could start feeling as if Al is alone in the world. And nothing is further from the truth.

Do you remember that passage in “A Guide to Rational Living” where Dr. Ellis talks about one of his clients quoting from Al’s book “How to live with a Neurotic”? The passage goes, “So Jones gets drunk every night and acts noisily. How do you expect a drunk to act—sober?”

So it is with those currently at the helm of AEI. How do you expect these liars to act—truthfully? (Of course, technically, to paraphrase Ellis and Harper, there is no such thing as a liar—only a person who lies frequently—or behaves disingenuously).

This mob tells so many lies that I’m reliably informed that they’re going to get a mention in the second edition of Al Franken’s book “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them”.

If Bob O’Connell told Debbie that work would begin on say, October 13th, then it should probably come as no surprise that by mid December the work has still not begun.

If Debbie and a handful of volunteers get the apartment ready for the refurbishments, then it should probably come as no surprise that they blame Debbie for holding up the work.

If they tell people that Al is “half out of it,” it should probably come as no surprise to read an article in the New York Times declaring Al back in session. Nor should we be surprised to see pictures of Al at work.

If they say that they’re going to pay Al’s medical bills then it should probably come as no surprise that they haven’t paid the bills.

Drunks drink and liars lie. From “no lawyers will be present at the meeting,” through “excess benefits,” and “we had no choice,” all the way to “we’ll fix the apartment and pay the bills,” these lying liars have done nothing but lie.

Honestly,

Earl
