Shot

James kicked the door open to the Doctor's office, making a very loud banging noise when the door slammed into the wall behind it, he quickly walked into his office, a soft sigh escaping him, well he had made it here in record time not that this was going to look very good for the fact that he was completely bare except for a pair of pants and was covered in blood and holding the source of the blood in his arms, a bleeding and shot Verona, "Doctor!" he called out, his heart pounding into his chest, he wasen't worried...well maybe alittle.

"Governor Roberts," Doctor William Steele stood up immediately from his desk at the back of the office and, completely ignoring his manners, rushed to him, hardly able to see anything other than blood and the contrasting white of the girls' skin. "What happened here?" He pushed his arms beneath the woman, lifting her up and carrying her to the only other divided room besides the upstairs living quarters and laying her on a cot, trusting only that the governor would follow and explain everything.

James stood there for a long moment after Verona was removed from his arms, he slowly lowered his hands down to hang at his side, looking down at himself, everything was cover his blood, his pants, his hands, arms and chest even his face, he closed his eyes for a long moment before following behind Steele, "She was shot....twise." he said.

Turning around with a look of shock etched into his features, he exclaimed, "Shot? By whom?" Not giving the man a chance to answer him to his face, he turned his attention quickly to the girl, still conscious, but barely, and breathing, by what he could tell, just fine. Again, removing himself from propriety, he used the sheer strength of his hands to pull the corset apart and the dress down past her shoulders, at least giving her the dignity of being covered as much as possible. Taking one large step to a shelf on one side of the room, he removed large tweezers and gauze and was once again hovering over her form.

James stayed standing a few feet away, bringing his arms up to cross across his chest, his eyes staying on Verona but he answered the doctor truthfully, "I did." he said, his voice was calm and held only the truth, he brought one of his hand up and swiped it across his face, trying to wipe away the blood but only smeared it with the blood already coaking his hands.

"And for no reason, too," she lied, reaching up to touch the doctor's waistcoat and clutching it in her hands, "A woman can't even mind her business without being attacked," then, the crying was enduced again as she really tried to make the governor look like the one in the wrong. "He was blind with rage!" Verona's voice was soft, hoarse, worn from gasping for breath, screaming, and insulting the governor.

James stood there, listening to Verona's words but did nothing to defend himself, he diden't care right now about what she said about him or what she called him or even if she completely ruined his name he diden't care all he cared about at that moment was making sure she would be alright and once he found out he would leave her as she wanted.

"Calm down, miss," Doctor Steele hushed, pressing her right shoulder down with his thumb and index finger while using his other hand to maneuver the tweezers within the wound, removing metal, cloth, and any other debris that was visible, "Lies aren't becoming on a lady, even a pirate." His eyes fluttered from her wound, which he was now wrapping with gauze and cloth, to the mark now visible on her arm, to the governor, who simply didn't appear to know what exactly to do with his emotions. "If you wish," Will started, coughing lightly with remorse, "I can discontinue treatment of the girl. Your name will go unsullied, governor, as I am a second witness to her piracy."

"I don't care about my name" James snapped not meaning to take his building angry out on the doctor but he wanted to get his point across that he would contiue to do his job and he would fix her wounds, his breathing was slow but deep, his arms remaing crossed across his chest, feeling Verona's blood drying ageist his bare skin.

"You can't be serious! That you would even think such a thing" Verona pleaded, even looking to the governor for some sort of release. She wouldn't die this way. Not because of something so trifling. "Good doctor, 'first, do no harm!' come now, love," she winced as he continued to prod at her wounds and watched his face, concentrated and resolute. "If it's the gallows, it's the gallows. Not like this."

William nodded, first at the governor, then to the woman's appeals. He moved onto her other shoulder, using the same procedure and the same care as he had on the first. In silence, he moved to her right again, nursing the wound once more before threading his needle and stitching what he could to stop the bleeding.

After wrapping her shoulder a second time, now that it had been secured, he looked to the governor again, deliberation hard on his face as he returned to attend to the left arm once again. "Should that be the case, then," he started, quite late, "I will need a full account of what happened."

"A full account of which you will not get from me." James said softly, keeping his eyes on Verona's face, watching her movements and expressions, "Believe her story, go and allow her story to be told of what happened, allow it to tranish my name, free me of my title and maybe just maybe a few will cry for the broken trust they had in me and their tears will wash clean the blood on my skin." he said softly, his voice calm, holding no game nor joke, simply speaking.

"Stop being such a woman!" Verona sighed, rolling her head to look away from the area of her shoulder the doctor was prodding. "Like my courageous story of breaking into your house illegally, stealing things, and being shot, by you, in your own house, because I'm a bloomin' pirate is going to strip you of your damned title. You bloody well know my word means next to nothing, so even a lie would get me nowhere." Another sharp pain shot through her shoulder as the doctor actually stuck the tip of his finger into her flesh to assess the bleeding, and again she let out a yelp of pain. Maybe it wasn't quite worth it.

James allowed a smile to grace his lips as he looked down at Verona, firery as always and like he said before he did not care what she called him or said about him, "Like I said before, believe her story." he said, shaking his head slightly in amusment before trunning his head at the sound of thunder then glanced out the still open door and saw the rain comming down, "Take care of her Doctor, I woulden't mind getting to see her again." he said before moving to stand right outside the door, still able to been seen by both of them as he tilted his head up and closed his eyes, allowing the rain to wash over his body, causing the blood to slide down along him, dripping off his fingers, cleaning him.

"Impossible," Verona shook her head, hardly believing her eyes as the governor, drenched in her blood, from when he shot her, waltzing into the rain and mentioned that he wouldn't mind seeing her again. "He's so bleedin' impossible!" She shouted the final part enough to allow him to hear very clearly. Looking over at the doctor, she shook her head and spoke directly to him, "You men are entirely impossible."
