Another offseason in the Nolan era begins. Lots of cash to spend and lots of picks.

Looks pretty good to me. That draft would fill several needs and give us some prospects to develop to fill other needs.

Good mock, Niner. I like the Davis pick, especially if Huff and Hawk are gone, but you addressed the key needs of LB and DB.

I am becoming more and more convinced that the Niners will either opt for Vernon Davis or trade down with someone who wants to jump ahead of the Raiders to have their pick of the remaining QB's.

Here is how I think the top 5 go, assuming there isn't a trade.

01. Houston Texans - Reggie Bush RB USC*
02. New Orleans Saints - AJ Hawk OLB Ohio State
03. Tennessee Titans - Matt Leinart QB USC
04. New York Jets - D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT Virginia
05. Green Bay Packers - Mario Williams DE NC State

That leaves the Niners with a very tough choice between Michael Huff and Vernon Davis. Both could make an immediate impact as a starter at positions of need. Both are high character guys with good production, leadership, and measurables.

I think if I were Mike Nolan, I would go with Davis. We have a desperate need for a playmaker on the offense to give Smith a reliable target. I think our biggest problem last year (other than injuries) was the inability of the offense to make first downs and keep possesion of the ball to keep our defense off the field. Many times our defense would be playing well but quickly wear down because they were out on the field so much. Too many 3 and out's also led to poor field position for both the offense and defense. Vernon Davis is just the sort of guy you want out on the field to find the openings in the defense and keep the chains moving. He is versatile enough that we can line him up all over ala Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. He also is a good blocker, so he won't be a liability in the running game.

As I said, Michael Huff is a very real possibility as well. However, the other wildcard is a tradedown. A team may see Vince Young or Jay Cutler fall out of the top 5 and recognize that they could jump in front of the Raiders to have their pick of either one. The Vikings could be one possible team to do this, they just picked up an extra 2nd rounder from the Culpepper trade and need a young guy to develop behind Johnson. Instead of waiting until later on the first day to take someone like Croyle or Whitehurst, this would allow them to take one of the top QB prospects. This would also allow the Niners to move back and still pick up a top player who can start at one of their many positions of need, as well as add yet another starter in the 2nd round. Five picks on the first day would certainly go a long way towards re-building the team.

Well, you guys did sign superstar Walt Harris, so I'd say you don't need the secondary help (snicker). Davis would be the smarter first round choice. Alex Smith needs a safety valve. A WR in the 2nd round would be a good move as well, but Nolan might look into getting secondary help then. If I remember right, isn't Adam Snyder (that's his name right, the former guard drafted last year) competing for playing time at right tackle? I seem to recall he played some tackle last year, and by all reports, was actually decent.

Did Harris ever start for the Skins? I don't think so.....

Getting Antonio Bryant & avoiding Lloyd --- that's a push I think in a sorta-kinda-maybe way. I still think they should seriously consider another early-round WR in the draft, since Rahaun Woods gets a no confidence vote from Nolan.

Yes to both the Snyder questions. He's been a minor success story in SF. They tried him everywhere, including center, like they did their other guard Baas drafted last yr as well as Justin Smiley drafted the yr beofre, b/c Jeremy Newberry might be stick a fork in him time, the latest offseason surgeries on his shoulders makiing him questionable. But Snyder has done well at RT, their most versatile O-lineman so far, forced to rotate them every whichaway b/c Kwame Harris can't handle RT & is a liability protecting SMith's blind side, a #1 pick who just can't pass block NFL-quality pass rushers. Next season will be make or break for Kwame Harris id he doesnt get cut in camp. Again, look for another O-lineman who's serviceable to be added in FA or the draft. Speaking of which, was Jonas Jennings on a 1-yr, gone now?

Jonas is still around, he wasn't on a one year deal. Problem is he's always hurt.

Actually, old timer, Harris did start. Then Rogers proved his readiness, and thus took over the starting spot. I think you missed the sarcastic point. ;)

Jennings is simply too costly to consider dumping at this point. I think that, if he can't handle the left side (I thought he was doing OK until injuries took over), you have to play him at RT. Harris is a joke.

As far as Lloyd v. Bryant, I think they just had to get Lloyd out of town. Plus picking up 3rd & 4th rounders isn't bad at all for dumping a guy for whom they couldn't work out a contract. I still can't believe the dislike for Rashaun Woods. Please cut him, Mike, & let him come to Tampa Bay.

Rashaun Woods, who woulda thunk? I thought that was one of the greatest moves of all time to get him...and now I'm not so sure.

I agree with you completely Niners Fan, I'd rather the 49ers go with Davis with the 6th overall pick. Yes the defense has alot of needs but Davis is the kind of Game-Breaker that SF needs. His hands and route-running are good enough to line him at WR at times and create serious mis-matches for opposing defenses. While Huff would also be a good pick, There is alot of depth at the safety position. Jason Allen, Anthony Smith, and Pat Watkins are all safeties that would be an up-grade to what they already have and can be found in rounds 2-3.

The 49ers would be incredibly lucky to have Jason Allen even make it to them in the 2nd round, and he's just as good a CB prospect, if not more so, as a safety.

Yes the 49ers would be very lucky to have Allen fall to them in round 2. He's had some amazing workouts after recovering from a hip injury so it's possible that he sneaks into round 1. This is such a deep draft that maybe a player like Allen, Cromartie, or Ko Simpson falls to round 2 and I could see the 49ers picking up one of those players if they fell to them.

Of those three guys, though, Allen is the only who deserves to be in the 1st round. I maintain that position, your honor.

Speaking of Allen, Niners are going to sign former Dallas guard Larry Allen to a 2-year deal.

I like this signing. He is on the downslide of his career, but Nolan is bringing him in more for his attitude and leadership. Along with Newberry (if healthy), he should help set an example for our numerous younger lineman on the right way to play the game.

Man, who would have thought 5 seasons ago that T.O. would be a Cowboy and that Larry Allen would be a Niner. Gotta love that Free Agency...

The signing would definitely bring leadership to their young O-Line. The 49ers will have alot of depth on the line now.

Niners Fan, Now that the 49ers have lost both of their starting OLB's, What do you think about this Mock Draft on day one.

Trade Down:

Round
1. Chad Greenway, LB, Iowa
2a. Donte Whitner, DB, Ohio St.
2b. Anthony Fasano, TE, Notre Dame
3a. Stanley McClover, DE/LB, Auburn
3b. Martin Nance, WR, Miami (OH)
