The Aftermath indeed - though I imagine the events here will have serious repercussions later on.
I'll have to go back and see how many people died in the first show. I'm starting to worry about Lin Bei-Fong.
Loved the bit about platinum, and then Tenzin, Lin, and Korra being somewhere on the epic side of epic.
It does make me wonder, though, that the equalists are doing so well against the absolute best benders in the world. Makes me think they need to have some specific anti-equalist training. "Normal" peak bending isn't cutting it at all.
Also, it's pretty clear that the smarmy Water Tribe council member has something going on beneath the surface...

Jet and Yue are the only deaths I can think of off the top of my head (unless you count folks that died before the series so then you've got Kya, Iroh's son, all the airbenders, yada yada yada).
Agreed that Tarrlok is scummy.
I lost a bit of respect for Lin in this one. She's all RULES LAWS RULES LAWS ARE THE ONLY WAY how dare you break my laws in my city, ect when Korra comes into the city so her announcement at the end comes off a bit two faced. It kind of shows she's got a bit of her mother in her since Toph loved to break rules but is very selfish from Lin.
"Normal" peak bending isn't cutting it at all.
I remain very unimpressed with the bending so far in this show. Lin and her metalbenders have clearly gotten way to dependent on that aspect of earthbending. All the acrobatics and whip action of the cables is cute but the characters in the original show were handling tanks (at the time unbendable) and the like on a regular basis so I'm thinking peacetime has cause a lot of edges to be lost.

I'd forgotten about the tanks. Though the electricity, spaces (lots of confinement and civilians in most conflict areas), and chi-blocking are things even the Blue Lotus guys probably would have had trouble with.

White Lotus?
I'll agree that the confinement and possibility of civilian casualties makes things more difficult for benders but as I was watching last night I couldn't help but think how Toph and Bumi would probably be bringing down the ceiling and opening up holes in the floor (which would protect them from getting electrocuted via their own equipment, you would think that the arena would've taught them a lesson on that). None of the earthbenders brought up walls to hide behind or slung around large rocks. There were no civilians in play to worry about there.
I will say the air scooter was awesome. Very Obi-wan.

I'm curious to see if they're going to provide an explanation why so many "rare" bending types are so common - lightning, metal, and now bloodbending have been seen in much less advanced benders than in the original series.

Tarrlok is a vampire confirm/deny? He was narrowly defeated/exiled by Aang at some point in the past and has been using his powers to unnaturally extend his lifespan so that he could take over Aang's city and manipulate his successor as a form of revenge. That was not a style upgrade. It's a freaking car. Big whoop. I will say it was nice to see some teamwork and real bending for a change in this episode even if the lighting and bloodbending both made us go Now taking bets on Naga saving Korra in the next episode. Wasn't lightning from that hand device Asami has?

I'm gonna go ahead and point at one of the obvious elephants in the room and call Amon full of horsepucky. Or a chicken.
Cleansing all the existing 'impurities' isn't going to get him anywhere. Benders are born to non-benders all the time so once his lifespan is over unless he can pass along his 'gift' or somebody else gets 'blessed from the gods' he's not going to fix anything.
Second, the Avatar. Say he 'cleanses' Korra. That's probably only a temporary victory, when she dies the Avatar spirit is going to be reborn and I'm willing to bet in a new body things will work just fine again. So unless Amon wants all his work to be for naught he's got to take the obvious step of breaking the Avatar cycle.
Really, he's quite lucky. He's at one of the few points in history when one of the four nations is exposed and vulnerable to being wiped out. He's got to kill Tenzin and his family to break the Avatar cycle or he's full of it. Granted it's pretty monstrous to kill kids but it's not like removing a fundamental part of their being is going to be all rainbows now is it?
The only other alternative is to 'cleanse' Korra or kill her while she's in the Avatar state. If he knows that little detail and wants to give it a try I wish him all the fun in the world.

It will be interesting to see where they will take this Amon story.
I wonder when will Korra finally start acting more serious about her Avatar training. Her Air bending is hardly existing and her spiritual side is not far behind. And I can't wait to see her in Avatar state.

Yep, there's been a distinct lack of glowy eyes in this series.

Indeed - much as I hate the slimy council member, I was completely on board with his criticism of Korra's air and spiritual training this season.

It occurred to me today that Katara was wrong. Tenzin isn't the person to teach Korra the spiritual aspect of the Avatar. I was wondering when (or if) they'd bring in Zuko and I decided he'd be probably be way, way better than Tenzin. He could totally be the Uncle Iroh of these series. When you think hotheaded and impatient who do you think of? Zuko in the first series fits that description pretty darn well. Who better to teach patience than somebody who's been there, done that?
