Title: Elementary
Description: CBS's Sherlock Holmes series

Just thought I'd start this thread here, since unlike the BBC Sherlock fandom, I am still optimistic (but not blindly loyal) to this show.

The hatedom for this show is intensely stupid - not even a full episode, and there's a three-to-two dislike ration - in the thousands - on a trailer.

Chimpo - May 19, 2012 08:19 AM (GMT)
Honestly I'm not buying this version but I'll give it a chance.

millernumber1 - May 19, 2012 09:39 PM (GMT)
Absolutely. What we see here is not perfect, certainly - but I think it's neither awesome nor horrible - and much to be hopeful about. I am just very irritated at the people who are hating this show just because they love another version. (Well, that and I have serious problems with their version.)

Darth Lex - May 20, 2012 01:51 AM (GMT)
I haven't seen the BBC version, so I've got no stake in that quarrel. :p I'm not really sold on this version yet but I'll certainly give it a shot and see. :nodyes:

millernumber1 - September 8, 2012 07:29 PM (GMT)
So, the pilot was leaked this week. I managed to catch it, and while it's not stellar, it's definitely watchable, and I look forward to seeing if they improve!

Darth Lex - September 28, 2012 04:04 AM (GMT)
I watched the premiere tonight, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Not quite the angle I was expecting from either Holmes or Watson, but those two characters were certainly entertaining and intriguing. I'll be watching again, for sure. :waytogo:

millernumber1 - September 28, 2012 04:08 AM (GMT)
I agree! I love the casting, and find some of the worldbuilding (the bees) quite good. The mystery of the week was...really weak. Implausibly coincidental, even by Holmesian standards. However, even though it stays a bit above "mediocre," it avoids both the incredible highs and disgusting lows of Sherlock, and I'm still in it for another week, at least!

jade51999 - September 28, 2012 05:00 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I think I'll pass. I LOVE Sherlock, and I do feel like for Sherlock to be "brilliant" he needs to be able to do things that the run-of-the mill coppers can't do. And the mystery in the opener was just, blah.

I also have never warmed to Lucy Liu so it wasn't quite my thing.

millernumber1 - September 28, 2012 05:01 PM (GMT)
At least you gave it a chance! I can definitely see why people won't continue, but I think it has promise and enjoyment.

Chimpo - September 28, 2012 07:04 PM (GMT)
I'll need 2 or 3 more episodes to decide.

I gave up on Revolution after second episode.

millernumber1 - September 29, 2012 01:11 AM (GMT)
I'm in a very similar boat, Chimpo. I am intrigued and not that put off by Elementary, while Revolution is actively annoying with its stupidity.

jade51999 - September 30, 2012 08:44 PM (GMT)
I have to watch a second episode of Revolution before I decide on that one though my co-worker was completely all about Last Resort.

millernumber1 - October 5, 2012 04:02 AM (GMT)
Wow, the second episode was a HUGE step up from the first one. Numerous Holmes references, and worked into the update, not merely plopped in with current terminology. The case was much less implausible, and actually subverted my expectations, instead of trying to build suspense with cliches.

And I'm awestruck at how perfect Miller is physically - he seems like he stepped right off the Strand illustrations by Sidney Paget, with his slightly balding head, incredibly sharp chin, and lean, tall build.

Darth Lex - October 7, 2012 02:08 AM (GMT)
I agree, the second episode was great! :D

millernumber1 - October 9, 2012 03:36 AM (GMT)
Why'd it have to be "in two weeks" instead of "next week?"

jade51999 - October 10, 2012 03:49 PM (GMT)
Probably the debate. I liked the second episode better than the first. Still not sure if it'll make the regular schedule, but since I'm DVRing it for my roommate figured I would give it another gander.

millernumber1 - October 10, 2012 05:06 PM (GMT)
There's a debate tomorrow? Shows how much I pay attention.

Oh, well. Hopefully they won't pull a long break until Christmas.

jade51999 - October 10, 2012 05:20 PM (GMT)
It's the VP Debate between Biden and Ryan.

Darth Lex - October 28, 2012 01:27 AM (GMT)
Great conversation between Sherlock and the captain at the end of the last episode. Great writing and characterization. B-) :notworthy:

Chimpo - November 22, 2012 09:20 PM (GMT)
I just can't get interested in this show. Don't know why really.

millernumber1 - May 4, 2013 02:40 AM (GMT)
Well, it's been a while since I've posted, but I've steadily grown invested in this show - it's really fantastic.

Chimpo - May 4, 2013 06:49 AM (GMT)
Maybe I'll give it a chance again but when the season is over.

millernumber1 - May 4, 2013 06:50 AM (GMT)
It all depends on what you're looking for in a show - I found a Holmes I can love, a Watson I can root for, and a relationship between the both of them to make me ignore the sometimes thin case-of-the-week. Plus tons of really intelligent original Sherlock Holmes story references. :)

Darth Lex - May 4, 2013 08:58 PM (GMT)
I don't know the Holmes lore well enough to catch the references, but I'm very much enjoying the dynamics among the characters as they've developed over the course of the season. Holmes and Watson are great foils for each other. I also like how the police characters have gone from viewing Holmes as a lunatic getting in the way to an eccentric who actually can be quite helpful.

I also liked how they waited to the very end of the season to really do much with the Moriarty angle. Build up the characters first, then introduce the nemesis. I like it. :nodyes:

jade51999 - May 6, 2013 02:08 PM (GMT)
Um. I see that my last post on this subject was wishy-washy. This show is now on my regular rotation. I've had to eat my words. I really like it.

PS: Did you see they cast Natalie Dormer (aka Anne Bolyn from the Tudors or Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones) as Irene Adler?

millernumber1 - May 6, 2013 02:13 PM (GMT)
Glad to hear it! It is definitely a show that has grown in the telling :)

I did see that Dormer is coming - I think that's pretty cool. I'm kinda torn on Dormer's past roles, but I think she's a fine actress. I hope they go a different route than Sherlock's "she's a sex worker," though. I'm kinda resigned to her being a morally ambiguous figure of darkness, but please...let's avoid the hypersexualized femme fatale cliche?

Chimpo - May 6, 2013 03:20 PM (GMT)
Well Irene Adler in the books was a femme fatale so it's not like they choose it, because OMG let's make her sex worker it will be fun, but because it's just a modern version of what she was doing in her times.

millernumber1 - May 8, 2013 11:22 PM (GMT)
Um, I think we have very different ideas about what a femme fatale is. I'm talking specifically about the trope of the woman who is 1) up to no good; 2) flaunts her sexuality as an integral part of that doing no good; 3) usually has a lot of red and black in their colorscheme (that last is kind of tongue in cheek). (Additionally, the femme fatale is really from the noir/hardboiled genre, which post-dates Sherlock Holmes's time period by about 40 years).

Irene Adler in the books is: Smart, has integrity, practical, transgresses gender expectations, world-wise, a traveller, classy.

There isn't a lot of overlap here. If you really want to emphasize the "she had sex with the King of Bohemia for a position/living for a while" and try to make that fit "femme fatale," I guess you could (and Moffat and co clearly did), but I don't think it's as simple as "it was all there in the book."

millernumber1 - May 10, 2013 03:03 AM (GMT)
Totally called the end of tonight's episode. And pumped for the two-hour finale!

Darth Lex - May 15, 2013 02:26 AM (GMT)
That was a great ending! :O :O

Very excited to see the finale. :francis:

millernumber1 - May 17, 2013 02:03 PM (GMT)
Wow, that was a fantastic finale. And while extremely tense, no hint of a cliffhanger! What is this good writing, and where has the crappy writing of telelvision shows I'm used gone? :)

jade51999 - May 20, 2013 02:31 AM (GMT)
What. I thought that was the finale. Oh man. I'm excited!

Darth Lex - May 21, 2013 02:13 AM (GMT)
That finale episode was :O :O :O :O
