Hi, all!

I'm thinking about subbing some raw rips I have, but I'm not really savvy about the technology. What are some good subbing applications, and does anyone know a good tutorial on the art and science of stubtitling?

For the record, I have both a Mac and a PC, and while I prefer working on the Mac, I understand that the PC is probably more likely to be subtitle-app friendly.

I have a question, and I don't wish to seem ungrateful in
asking it, but here goes: Can anyone direct me to a tutorial
for how to create a version of this episode with hard subs?

It's very simple. Get Virtual DubMod and VobSub. Install
Virtual Dub first then VobSub. At VobSub's installation be
sure to select the "TextSub for VirtualDub" plugin. You'll be
asked to point to VirtualDub's directory at the end of the
installation. Now just open VirtualDubMod and import the .avi
(drag and drop or open video file) and click yes if a message
appears. Then Video->Filters->Add->TextSub 2.23 and open the
subtitles file. Then OK and close the filters dialog. Preview
the video to get sure the subtitles are there (just slide the
bar allong). Then do Video-> Compression and select your
favourite codec (DivX, XVid or whatever). About 2000Kbps will
give an about same filesize, where 1900 a 700MB one and the
half a 350MB one. Be sure that Streams->StreamList->right
click at the "Input AVI file" is set to direct stream copy.
Then at the main program again Video-> should be at full
processing mode. Now File-Save as... select your desired
directory and name and then wait for a few hours deepending on
the settings of the codec and how good is your PC. You can
actually select at the new window and while encoding the
"Processing thread priority" to Lowest. That will ensure that
if you want to still use your PC, you won't see any slowdown
but the file will still be encoded in the maximum-possible
speed (except you are playing the latest 3d-game)...
Please keep the product for your own use
