Nah, the MAG50 is much more like a Light Support Weapon, LMG or SAW, than the Halo2 BR. The BR from H2 is more like a carbine. A stripped down assault rifle or something.

actually i dont think the battle rifle would be a carbine because it is full size and does not appear to be shortened in any way, if it was a carbine it would have a shorter barrel and perhaps a collapsable stock.

A Carbine is a shorter, lighter and less powerful version of it's counterpart. ie. M16A2 > M4 Carbine. M1 Garand > M1A1 Carbine (Paratrooper Rifle)
The BR in Halo 2 fires more powerful ammunition than the MA5B, and looks longer, as well as a scope for longer range which goes against the "close quarter combat" element to carbines.
So the BR in H2 isn't a Carbine because it does not fit the criteria.

I HAVE the "Art of Halo" book, so let me read you some info from the BR's section:
"BATTLE RIFLE, A new weapon for Haalo2, the battle rifle is a stripped down, almost skeletal version of the assault rifle. It has a longer barrel, a scope, and is more accurate (though with a smaller ammunition capacity). "The battle rifle fires a heavier, harder-hitting round than the assault rifle," McLees explains, "And it is also a secmiautomatic weapons so it has a lower rate of fire. It is also far more accurate than the AR."
It's not a VERSION of the AR per se, but it was designed for Halo 2 for that combat rifle role in mind. Of course the AR is back in Halo 3, so I wonder what role the BR will play now.
But yes, you're right, the BR is, as they say, a "Cousin" to the AR, but not a version of it. And it most certainly does not fill the role of a carbine.
