I was recently accepted and am in the process of making a final decision regarding enrollment – Help, what should I do?

VISIT THE CAMPUS!

CAMPUS VISIT: If you will have the opportunity and time to visit the campus, I highly recommend planning a brief trip to Baltimore over the summer. Visiting provides the opportunity to see current students in action, as well as the chance stop by the important campus offices including Academic Advising, Housing, Registrar, etc., and familiarize yourself with the greater Baltimore area.

Furthermore, during the summer months, the Admissions Office offers weekday information sessions at the new Mason Hall Admissions Building scheduled at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., followed by student-guided tours (immediately following the information sessions), where you can receive a personalized campus tour, familiarize yourself with the campus, and ask a current student questions regarding anything from campus life to academics to sports.

In addition to the campus tour, I recommend individually visiting:

Garland Hall: This the building where Academic Advising is located, on the third floor; stop by there and speak to an Advisor if you have any specific questions regarding transfer credit, study abroad, graduation requirements, etc. (I recommend making an appointment in advance.) The Registrar is also located in this building, in the basement. You can pick up a course catalog down there and snoop around too.

The MSE Library: The library is neat to explore, it has a few underground floors, computer labs, etc. This is also where Café Q is located, on the main floor.

Gilman Hall: This is one of the first buildings constructed on campus, dating back to the 1800’s. It’s the pretty building with the clock tower that you usually see on JHU postcards and web sites… The university is currently renovating the building, but you can still get a good view if you walk past it on your way to the MSE Library.

The White Athletic Center/O’Connor Recreation Center: The Center features an 18,000-square-foot gym with a three-lane jogging track above its perimeter that can be transformed into three basketball courts, five volleyball courts, or three badminton courts. The center also has four racquetball/squash courts, a weight room, and a 30-foot climbing wall. A fitness facility located in a large window-lined room at the entrance of the building contains treadmills, cross-trainers, stationary bikes, stair machines, and rowing machines.

Charles Commons: An upperclassmen housing building located on N. Charles Street, across the street from the MSE Library; a great dining hall, Nolan's, is located on the second floor, designed like a large living room.

The Barnes and Noble Store: This is also across the street from the MSE Library, adjacent to Charles Commons. It's a huge bookstore with a Starbucks and texts/dorm goodies are sold upstairs. There is also an area on the ground level behind the stairs, where you can buy JHU paraphernalia, such as tees, mugs, pens, stuffed animals (like my adopted mascot, Hogsworth Hopkins).

VIRTUAL VISIT: If you can’t make it to Baltimore over the several weeks prior to the decision deadline, have no fear, there are many virtual options available which will provide you with an idea of campus life, academics at Hopkins, extracurricular activities, popular majors, housing options, etc.
